My curiosity about body language started with a particular professor
from my university. On a brisk morning,as he playfully pointed out my
tendency to rub my nose whenever I wove excuses for being late to his
lectures,he fascinated me with the gripping notion of "Pinocchio".
Actually, when someone tells a lie,the person's blood rushes to the nose
and the extra blood makes it itchy(发痒的).This little example of non
verbal communication inspired me to become a body language expert. Now,
I earn my living by training people in non-verbal communication.Knowing
高二英语试题第4页(共12页)
when someone is lying and knowing how to persuade people you're telling
the truth are two of the most important skills you'll ever learn.
I have spent a lot of time studying the ways the human body gives
more reliable information than the words we speak. The words say one
thing but the body may say something completely different. We know that
crossed arms can be seen as either defensive or aggressive, but what about
facial expressions, postures and gestures? All of these say a lot and can
only be understood if you know how to make sense of the signs.
Business clients are always in need of my services and I try to improve
their confidence by teaching them about body language.I give advice about
handshakes, which should always be firm and steady, and I teach the
importance of personal space. They may seem like minor matters, but these
codes of behaviour can be the key to making or breaking a business deal.
My working life gives me a great deal of satisfaction.I feel that I'm
providing a public service, but it is a service that has had its downside.
Whenever I meet someone new and I tell them what I do for a living, they
immediately put their guard up and they're no longer relaxed. They quite
literally freeze in the attempt to hide all the signals that they think I'm
reading. It makes life difficult at times, but I consider it a small price to pay
for a job I enjoy so much.
24.What is the purpose of mentioning the author's professor in the first
paragraph?
A.To show how humorous his professor was.
B.To introduce what the concept of "Pinocchio"is.
C.To describe how interesting his university life was.
D.To explain what encouraged him to pick his career.
25.What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A.Crossed arms always indicate defensiveness.
B.Understanding body language requires specific skills.
C.Spoken words are more trustworthy than body signals.
D.Facial expressions, postures, and gestures convey insignificant information.
26.Why do people act in an unusual way after knowing the author's
occupation?
A.They believe he is studying them.
B.They consider him aggressive
C.They don't like his service.
D.They are rooted in shock.
高二英语试题第5页(共12页)
27.What does the author think of his job?
A.Stable but difficult.
B.Flexible but demanding.
C.Fulfilling but challenging.
D.Innovative but fast-paced.

Do you use the weekends to catch up on sleep? If so,you may want to
rethink that.Since the 1990s,scientists have understood that lacking sleep
can harm people's health. The changes it causes can lead to obesity and
diabetes.Yet in a recent survey,a little more than one in every three U.S.
adults reported sleeping fewer than the recommended seven hours a night.
Weekends may seem like a great time to catch up on sleep.Scientists,
however, weren't sure that would work.So Christopher Diner,a sleep
physiologist at the University of Colorado and his colleagues decided to test
it out.
The team looked at three groups of people in their mid-20s.For
roughly two weeks, each group followed a set sleep schedule. One group
slept about eight hours every night.Another group only got about five
hours of shuteye a night. The third group slept some five hours each
weeknight but could sleep whenever and however much they wanted over
the weekend.
The groups with less sleep snacked more at night, gained more weight,
and saw their insulin(胰岛素)sensitivity drop compared to the group
getting nine hours a night, said the study. The group that received two days
to catch up on sleep saw some small improvements that were lost once they
returned to a shorter sleep schedule.People in the study who got too little
sleep every night gained weight. So did the weekend sleep-in crowd.
“In the end,we didn't see any benefit in any metabolic(新陈代谢
outcome in the people who got to sleep in on the weekend,"Chris
Depner,an assistant research professor of the study said in a statement. In
some cases, insulin sensitivity among members of the group with the
weekend to catch up declined more than those who consistently slept five
hours a night,said the study.
28.Why did Diner and his team conduct the study?
A.To assist doctors'work.
B.To finish an assignment.
C.To prove their assumption.
D.To remove their doubt.
高二英语试题第6页(共12页)
29.How did the researchers carry out the test?
A.By using a questionnaire.
B.By comparing three sleep patterns.
C.By tracking one group for two weeks.
D.By making cause-and-effect analyses.
30.What do we know about catching up on sleep according to the study?
A.It requires further study.
B.It makes no difference to health
C.It may lead to a regular sleep pattern.
D.It may bring more harm than benefits.
31.What may the following paragraph probably focus on?
A.Ways of catching up on sleep.
B.Benefits of exercise for sleep.
C.Suggestions on healthy sleep.
D.Disorders from lacking sleep.

The Earth Species Project ESP is a U.S.-based non-profit
organization dedicated to decoding (animal communication using
AI.Its global research team is studying the vocalization patterns
of specific animals, such as beluga whales, crows, and zebra finches,
while also developing a general "foundation model"for animal
communication, similar to ChatGPT for human communication. The goal is
to make it possible for humans to communicate with other species,or at
least understand their communication,by 2030.
According to Aza Raskin,co-founder and president of the Earth
Species Project, the project is now facing challenges in its research efforts.
While large language models can be trained on vast amounts of Internet
data, this project must collect specific recordings from various animal
species.Analyzing animal data is complicated,as separating individual
animal sounds from a noisy environment is challenging. However, the
organization believes that as it gathers more recordings and improves its
models, clearer patterns will appear-eventually enabling us to infer
"meaning"from the data based on their similarities, even without fully
understanding the context behind the sounds.
Gail Patricelli,an animal behavior professor at the University of
California, has witnessed significant advancements in the use of machine
learning in bioacoustics. While she believes that ESP holds promise for
improving animal communication "dictionaries,"especially for species that
高二英语试题第7页(共12页)
are hard to access, she cautioned observers against projecting human
characteristics onto these animals. While technological advancements may
help us better understand animal communication,we must avoid assuming
that animals think or feel exactly like humans.Their behaviors and
vocalizations should be interpreted based on their own behaviors,
environments,and social structures.
Researchers expect the research to shift humans'understanding of our
place in the natural world, which could help address biodiversity loss
物多样性丧失).Director of Impact,.Jane Lawton,believes that creating an
"animal language dictionary"could help develop better conservation
strategies and reconnect humanity with overlooked ecosystems. For
example,in Canada's St.Lawrence River,where shipping traffic endangers
beluga whales, scientists are using machine learning to decode their
vocalizations, helping authorities alert boats and prevent accidents.
32.What is the purpose of the Earth Species Project?
A.To build a global database of animal sounds.
B.To teach animals to understand human languages.
C.To develop a model to study animal habits with AI.
D.To enable humans to engage in cross-species communication.
33.What does the underlined word "challenges"in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Gathering and analyzing animal data.
B.Training and enhancing language models.
C.Recording interactions among animal species.
D.Identifying the similarities between different animal sounds.
34.Which statement would Gail Patricelli probably agree with?
A.It is challenging to study animals by using machine learning.
B.Technology will allow us to communicate with animals fluently.
C.Human characteristics are the key to understanding animal behaviors.
D.Animal communication should be interpreted in each species'
context.
35.What can we expect of creating an "animal language dictionary"?
A.It will promote the protection of animal species.
B.It will assist humans in managing wildlife more effectively.
C.It will help discover new species through machine learning.
D.It will provide a complete translation of animal vocalizations.

When you're meeting someone for the first time, you want to leave a
good impression on him.36 However,it's not just your verbal
language that matters-the way you behave is also important. Here are some
tips on body language to show positivities and kindness in communication
with others.Nod and smile when appropriate. These nonverbal signs can
show the other person that you're fully involved in what he is saying, and in
agreement.Try nodding three times to show that you're really absorbed in
what he is saying.37 if you turn up the corners of your mouth but
your eyes stay the same, you could come off as insincere.
38 Don't be obvious, but try to match his body language and
facial expressions. This mirroring technique has even been shown to
increase a person's goodwill toward the person mirroring him.If he's
leaning against a wall, lean against the wall.If he has crossed his arms,
cross your arms.39
Laugh truly.Even if you're in a formal setting,if the other person has
clearly said something that was intended to raise a laugh,laugh!40

Carl moved to Arizona in December. He came from the round, green
mountains of Vermont to the Sonoran Desert where the mountains were
sharp,brown,and wrinkled.Carl was homesick.
Carl's new home was the town of Silverbell.Silverbell sat near a river
with the same name. But there was not a drop of water in this river.
Carl hadn't made any real friends yet.He always walked home from
school alone.One day,though,he heard a lonely melody (
floating in the wind.It sounded wonderful and fitted Carl's mood just
right. He followed the music to the schoolyard and found Tadio, the kid
who always sat by himself in the lunchroom. He sat on the steps playing a
wooden flute(长笛).
高二英语试题第11页(共12页)
“That song is wonderful!”Carl said,
"Thank you,"Tadio said with a bright,sunny smile.
"I'm Carl.I play, too."He took out his own silver flute.
“Ah,my name is Tadio..Let'splay together.”
Carl joined Tadio. They played Ode to Joy,a piece that they both
knew by heart. The two got along so well that Carl felt comfortable telling
Tadio about his homesickness.
"It just doesn't feel like winter around here,"Carl said."I don't think
it ever will.It's too hot."
Tadio said "It feels like winter to me,but I've lived in Silverbell my
whole life.”
"So,why is it called Silverbell anyway?"asked Carl.
“Because of the canyon(峡谷).My grandfather said at special times,
one could hear her ring like a silver bell..for example when the rain
poured down,Tadio said.
Then Carl complained about Principal Ramire's request for his flute
solo at tomorrow's winter concert.
"Ah,you are shy,but you play very well.Let's meet tomorrow
before the concert to practice.Maybe that will help ease your fear.I know
a spot beside the canyon where I often go to play.Sometimes, her echo
(回音)sounds like she's singing with me,”Tadio laughed.
The next day was sunny and warm. After school, the two boys spread
out a blanket beside Silverbell Canyon and played, stopping only when
they heard the sound of distant thunder. The rain followed.

She was ringing like a silver bell, which made Carl lost in the song of the echo.Spreading before

worry,Carl. You can imagine you are in the canyon."Hearing what Tadio said,Carl began to
wandering himself in the center of the beautiful songs echoed in the canyon, feeling much better
and relaxed. The concert turned out to be a great success and Carl began to love the place.
