W: So how much did the fish weigh?
M: You can guess.
W: 100 pounds?
M: No. It weighed more than 140 pounds. It was nearly 5 feet long. We believe the fish was over 100 years old.

W: That was really bad. I don’t think it could get out of it by itself.
M: You’re right. It wasn’t found until the following morning. But the man who found it couldn’t get the elephant out.
W: So what did he do?
M: He called the local forest department for help. Some people came to rescue. They broke down the brick wall of the well, and made a way for the elephant to walk on.
W: I hope the elephant didn’t get hurt.
M: Luckily it didn’t. But the well was damaged and needs rebuilding.
W: Well, I think it’s totally worth damaging the well. After all, saving a baby elephant is very important.
M: You can say that again.
Text 10 冬季户外跑步有助于提升运动表现
W: Hello! Today’s program is for people who like to run. Cold weather during winter months may keep many people from leaving home and running in the open air. However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance.
Many people say running in winter can be difficult. Two reasons are the low temperatures and bitter winds. However, many other runners might find it easier than running in hot weather. That could be because lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower than that in warm conditions and the body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather.
The very important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothes. For example, wear mittens instead of gloves. Wear shoes that will keep you from falling. And especially, wear more than one layer of clothes to keep sweat away from your skin. So, if you are a runner, don’t let the cold weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.

Dear Peter,
I’m delighted to hear you’re coming to China during the National Day holiday. I’d like to recommend two scenic spots that have gained global popularity.
The first is the Terracotta Army in Xi’an. It is an amazing historical site where a large number of statues were unearthed from the tomb of a powerful emperor. The second is Mount Hua, which enjoys a high reputation for its unique and breathtaking views. You can hike along the narrow paths, admiring the thick forest and strange-looking rocks.
As for transport, it is advisable to take high-speed trains and the subway to avoid traffic jams. I’m sure you will have a memorable and enjoyable journey in China.

Leslie Nielsen’s childhood was difficult, but he had one shining star in his life — his uncle, a well-known actor. The admiration and respect his uncle received inspired Nielsen to pursue a career in acting. Even though he often feared he would be found to lack talent, he kept moving forward. He earned a scholarship to the Neighborhood Playhouse and made his first television appearance in 1948. However, becoming a full-time and successful actor remained an uphill battle for another eight years, before he landed a series of film roles that finally brought him public attention.
Even so, what he had achieved was still not what he truly wanted. Nielsen had long believed he was suited for comedy, yet his good looks and distinguished voice kept him busy in dramatic roles. It was not until 1980, 32 years into his career, that he landed the role in Airplane! That seemed tailor-made for him. The movie opened a new chapter of his career, in which his outstanding comedic performance alone could guarantee a film’s commercial success, even if critics did not think highly of it.
Was Nielsen content with his career? The answer was yes and no. He was delighted to finally perform the comedy he had always wanted to do. Yet even in his later years, he remained curious about new roles and challenges ahead. He never stopped working and never retired.
Leslie Nielsen’s devotion to acting is truly inspiring. He achieved extraordinary success in his career merely through consistent hard work and strong determination. His story proves that a single persistent dream can lead to an extraordinary life.
24. Why did Nielsen want to be an actor?
A. He enjoyed watching movies. B. He was eager to earn money.
C. He wanted to be like his uncle. D. He felt he was good at acting.
25. What do we know about Nielsen in the second half of his career?
A. He directed some high-quality movies. B. He avoided taking on new challenges.
C. He focused on playing dramatic roles. D. He became a successful comedy actor.
26. Which of the following best describes Nielsen?
A. Creative but impatient. B. Determined and adventurous.
C. Talented but lazy. D. Cautious and self-centered.
27. What does Nielsen’s career story tell us?
A. Art is long, life is short. B. He who laughs last laughs longest.
C. It’s never too late to learn. D. Where there’s a will there’s a way.
C
Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t hop out. Unaware of the slight increase in heat, it will stay put until — well, until it dies. When it comes to the effect of rising global temperatures on amphibians (两栖动物), the frog-boiling fable is more than just a metaphor (隐喻). In fact, it is playing out in the real world.
Climate change is becoming one of the biggest threats to frogs and other amphibians, according to a major study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Between 2004 and 2022, rising temperatures became the primary reason why more than 100 amphibian species were slipping toward extinction.
The spread of disease among frogs and the destruction of their habitats have long been recognized as reasons why many amphibians are decreasing. However, this new study goes further. It establishes climate change as a major risk for amphibians around the world, too. The soft-skinned animals lack the fur and feathers to help adjust their temperature in this hotter and more drought-stricken world.
Less attention is paid to frogs and other amphibians compared to more well-known groups like birds. Yet losing amphibians would be disastrous because they often act as a key link in the food web of ecosystems, wolfing insects down and, in turn, being eaten by larger predators (捕食者). “Without those amphibians to fill that role, we will see the breakdown of this food web,” said Neam, who works for an Austin-based environmental group.
Luckily, habitat protection and other conservation measures have been taken to help recover more than five dozen amphibians from Costa Rica to Malaysia. “It’s not all bad news,” said Jennifer Luedtke, an amphibian group leader of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “But we really must build on this improvement and significantly increase investment in amphibian conservation.”
28. How is the topic introduced?
A. By listing facts. B. By explaining ideas.
C. By sharing a story. D. By raising a question.
29. What is the main reason for the decrease of amphibians?
A. The spread of disease. B. The loss of habitats.
C. The rise of temperature. D. The lack of feathers.
30. What does the underlined phrase “wolfing insects down” most probably mean?
A. Eating numerous insects. B. Observing small insects.
C. Removing tiny insects. D. Protecting weak insects.
31. How does Luedtke feel about the future of amphibians?
A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Uncertain. D. Curious.
D
There is a growing hope in the field of earthquake prediction due to artificial intelligence (AI), which is challenging the widely accepted belief that earthquake prediction is impossible. Through a test carried out in China, a team of researchers from the University of Texas, Austin have developed an AI algorithm (算法) that can predict 70% of earthquakes up to seven days in advance.
The research team believes that their method worked well because they used a simple machine learning method. Based on the team’s understanding of earthquake physics, the AI was provided with a set of data on earthquake, and then taught itself by using a five-year earthquake record database. After the learning process, the AI was able to predict earthquakes by listening and analyzing signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings (隆隆声) in the Earth.
This achievement undoubtedly marks a milestone in the field of AI-powered earthquake prediction research. “Earthquakes arrive without warning,” explains Alexandros, a lead researcher at the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet). “It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how well you are prepared. Even with the 70% accuracy, this is a huge achievement which could help reduce economic and human losses and contribute to earthquake preparation worldwide.”
Although it remains to be seen whether this method will be as effective in other areas, the researchers believe that if used in areas with more earthquake tracking networks, their AI algorithms can deliver even more accurate predictions. In the short term, the next step is to test AI in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has 300 earthquake stations and a continuous recording history of over 6 years, making it an excellent testing ground for these purposes.
In the long run, the authors hope to combine the AI system with physics-based models. This combined strategy could be particularly important in situations where data is poor or lacking. “There’s still a long way to go, but many advances like this, taken together, are what drive science forward,” said Scott, the bureau’s director.
32. How does the AI algorithm predict earthquakes?
A. By using algorithms to collect data. B. By identifying data from the satellites.
C. By analyzing earth background sounds. D. By understanding earthquake physics.
33. What does Alexandros intend to show?
A. Practical methods to reduce quake losses. B. Significant value of AI quake prediction.
C. Essential work of earthquake preparation. D. Obvious limitations of current prediction.
34. What does the follow-up research focus on?
A. Combining the system with physics-based models.
B. Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C. Improving earthquake tracking networks in Texas.
D. Conducting AI prediction tests in Texas.
35. Which is the best title for the text?
A. AI: Reducing Earthquake Losses B. AI: Stopping Earthquake from Happening
C. AI: Predicting Most Earthquakes D. AI: Remaking earthquake prevention rules

The Power of a Personal Journal
Keeping a daily journal is one of the most powerful and beneficial habits you can develop. It is more than just a record of your life; it is a tool for self-expression, reflection, and personal growth. 36 For many successful writers and thinkers, it’s their first step into daily writing discipline.
A key benefit of keeping a journal is better self-understanding. Writing down your thoughts and feelings forces you to clarify them. 37 This process gives you new insights into your values and life goals, creating a space for honest self-conversation.
38 The more you write, the better you express ideas clearly. You can experiment with new vocabulary, different sentence structures, and various writing styles without the pressure of being graded. It’s a private playground for your words.
To get started, you don’t need a fancy notebook. 39 Consistency matters most — spend 10-15 minutes daily. You can write about your day, things you’re grateful for, or challenges you face. You can also focus on daily observations like the weather.
The benefits of this simple practice extend far beyond the page. It can reduce stress, increase creativity, and help you solve problems more effectively. 40 You might be surprised by what you discover.
A. Keeping a journal also improves writing skills.
B. So, why not pick up a pen and start writing from now on?
C. You can also share your journals with your friends for reference.
D. It allows you to look within, recall the past, and plan for the future.
E. It is important to write your journal entry at the same time every day.
F. A simple one or even a document on your computer will work perfectly.
