阅读A、B、C、D四篇短文,从每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Our school held a special activity called Know Yourself, Plan Your Future last Friday. At first, the speaker explained the purpose of the activity: before choosing a job, we should describe our own personality clearly.
Su Ming is energetic and outgoing, and he always keeps everything in good order and never behaves in a careless way. He has been interested in trains since childhood, so he dreams of becoming a railway engineer. Trains carry thousands of passengers every day, so safety is the highest standard in his eyes, and he has mentioned this many times.
Li Dan is quite the opposite. She is quiet, but she has a rich imagination. Her mother is good at working with numbers in a big company, and Li Dan wants to follow her example. A small mistake may cause a big loss, so she believes a person in this job must consider everything carefully. This job suits her careful character well.
Wang Ke, our confident monitor, impressed us most. He remained calm on the stage and passed his ideas on to us in a clear voice. He came up with a new plan for our class project and hoped to cooperate with different people. I want to be a social manager in the future, he said. The road may be tough, but challenges are chances. Many students suppose that only top students can succeed, but hard work at all times never lets you down and will pay off in the end.
At the end of the activity, our school president pointed out that the position which suits you best is often the right one. A recent study also shows that students who think in a positive way, not a negative one, are likely to do better in their future work.
26 ( ) Why does Su Ming want to be a railway engineer?
A. Because railway engineers can get high pay.
B. Because he has been interested in trains since childhood.
C. Because his parents want him to choose this job.
D. Because he thinks the job is easy and relaxing.
27 ( ) What does Li Dan think a person in her future job must do?
A. Have a rich imagination. B. Consider everything carefully.
C. Keep everything in good order. D. Cooperate with different people.
28 ( ) What does the phrase pay off in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. cost a lot of money B. come to an end
C. bring good results D. cause new problems
29 ( ) What can we learn about Wang Ke?
A. He remained calm when he spoke on the stage. B. He wants to be a maths teacher in the future. C. He never sets a high standard for himself. D. He thinks challenges are terrible things.
30 ( ) What does the speaker mainly want to tell us?
A. Only top students can get good jobs in the future.
B. A manager should think in a negative way.
C. Everyone can succeed by making good use of their strengths.
D. Interests are the most important thing in choosing jobs.

Last month, the students of Class 3, Grade 9 did a survey about teenage problems at home. They asked two hundred students about their habits and feelings, and the results surprised many teachers and parents.
About 68 percent of the students said they often argue with their parents, mostly about mobile phones and homework. Nearly half of them stay up late playing on their phones, though they know it is a waste of time. I feel mad at myself afterwards and really regret it, one student wrote, but the next evening, I do the same thing again. Some parents complain that their children hate listening to advice and never cut back on screen time.
However, the survey shows something different. Most teenagers do want to change, but they need support and understanding instead of shouting. Dr. Chen, a teenage expert, gives three suggestions: keep phones out of bedrooms at bedtime; when you feel stressed, talk to someone you trust instead of keeping it inside; and parents should set a good example first. Small steps matter, she said. Change will not come overnight, but it will come if the whole family works together.
31 ( ) What is the survey in Class 3 mainly about?
A. Students' favourite subjects at school. B. Parents' working hours in the factory.

A. Shouting at children when they play. B. Setting a good example first.
C. Taking away children's phones at school. D. Asking teachers to watch children at night.
35 ( ) What can we infer from Dr. Chen's words in the last paragraph?
A. Teenagers never want to change their habits.
B. Change takes time and needs the family's joint effort.
C. Phones should be kept in classrooms in the day.
D. Parents should do everything for their children.

Emma, a young Irish runner, has loved running since she was a little girl. On her desk stands a photo of a famous Irish gymnast, her childhood hero. After the death of her grandfather two years ago, she lost an important final race and fell to the bottom of her life.
Her coach did not shout at her. Instead, he talked with her face to face and told her that a true champion is not a person who never falls, but a person who never refuses to rise. Failure is normal, he said. Whatever happens, keep your will strong and move on. My dream is as wide as the universe, Emma wrote in her diary. She has lived through the hardest time and made rapid progress day by day.
Emma went through hard training. Sometimes she ran with a pain in her knee, but the pain could not take away her love for running. She also trained her muscles and shoulders to become stronger. In the semi-final this spring, she crossed the finishing line first. The whole audience stood up and cheered for her, and cheers filled the sports hall. In the final, she made it and won the gold medal. Her wonderful run was highly praised, and people called it a great achievement and a victory of fair play.
Emma's inspiring story has warmed many young hearts in her town. As she often says, life is not always fair, but if you take the risk of trying once more, success will come sooner or later. She has not stopped training yet, and her experience tells us that giving up is the only real failure.

Grandpa's garden is unlike any other in our town. He grows lotus flowers in a big water jar, cactus plants on the windowsill, and a couple of peanut plants by the wall. In autumn, we dig up the peanuts together, and their green stems and roots bear hundreds of little nuts. On days of celebration, such as my birthday, Grandpa cooks my favourite dish with fresh peanut oil.
Grandpa never judges a plant by its flowers. A cactus is not attractive, but it has a strong purpose, he explains. Unlike the lotus, which shows its beauty for only a few days, the cactus saves water and works quietly all the time. People are the same. Society needs different kinds of people, so don't compare yourself with others all the time.
Grandpa's own life proves this. His wife, my grandma, kept an old stamp book. It's a pity that she never saw our garden, but her unused stamps are still there. Exactly, Grandpa always agrees when I say plants are like people. My mother, Grandpa's only daughter, lives in the same town. My uncle dropped out of school at sixteen and started work in a garage, but Grandpa never looked down on him. My cousin graduated from university last year and now does research on desert plants. Every honest road leads somewhere beautiful, Grandpa says.

A. It is full of beautiful flowers all summer. B. It is the biggest garden in the town.
C. It has no flowers at all. D. It is different from other gardens in the town.
42 ( ) Why does Grandpa say the cactus has a strong purpose?
A. Because it blooms for only a few days.
B. Because it looks attractive in autumn.
C. Because it grows faster than the lotus.
D. Because it saves water and works quietly all the time.
43 ( ) What does Grandpa mean by People are the same?
A. Everyone in society has his own value. B. People should all learn to plant flowers.
C. Bosses are more important than workers. D. People need to work in a factory.
44 ( ) What can we learn about the writer's uncle?
A. He graduated from a famous university.
B. He does research on desert plants with the cousin.
C. He left school early, but Grandpa never looked down on him.

Growing Up: Three Diary Pages(成长日记三页)
Three students in our school keep diaries. Here are some pages from their diaries about growing up.
Kitty, 13: Sept 20. I felt silly today. I gave a wrong answer in the English class, and some classmates laughed. At first I felt it was a shame, but Mum said it is normal to make mistakes. I don't want to disappoint my parents, but my mood went from happy to sad in a second. Her words made me feel pretty good again. One day I feel silly and the next day I feel proud. That is the real self of a teenager.
Daniel, 14: Nov 8. Dad is Grandma's only son, and his boss often asks him to work late. Before dinner, I cooked noodles for my little sister and helped her read a short passage from her English book. Later we practiced a dialogue together and looked up a new word in her dictionary. Dad communicated with my teacher by phone that evening. On my way home, a stranger asked me the way, and I walked with her to the corner. Helping others really made my day.
Linda, 15: Dec 30. Grandma is more than seventy, but she still performs on the village stage at every celebration. She was a musician when she was young. When she plays the piano, the ugly noise of the day seems to go away. Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind, she says. My dream is to be a dentist, and I will work hard for it, whatever happens. Growing into a calm adult takes time, but I am ready.

1 D(考点:as well as 连接主语(谓语就前一致)。 either...or / neither...nor
2 A(考点:动词短语 let sb down(使某人失望)。
3 C(考点:宾语从句:whether...or not。
解析:spend some time doing sth 表示花时间做某事,应用动名词 making;受 want/decide to do 结构类推而误选 to make 是典型错误;spend 后不接动词原形或过去式,且本句主语 the students 是人,也排除 it takes sb time to do 结构的混淆。)
解析:由 who was ill in hospital 可知 Tom 没有去,应用表示不包括的 except;besides 表示包括在内的除...
10 D(考点:时间状语从句:as soon as(主将从现)。解析:as soon as 表示一...
14 A(考点:argue with(与... 解析:argued with myself in my head 意为在脑海里与自己争论、挣扎,与 should I...or keep silent 的犹豫呼应;agreed 与二选一的犹豫矛盾,complained/chatted 不接 with myself 表内心冲突。)
解析:全文主题是压力,a big stone on my back 是压力的比喻;pain 身体疼痛、silence 安静、energy 精力均不合主题,须结合全文主旨判断。)
16 C(考点:waste time on sth(浪费时间)。解析:由 lost interest、gave up painting 可知是浪费时间,waste time on 为固定搭配;save 与放弃爱好的消极语境相反;devote 后须接 to;take 不与 time on 搭配表此义。
19 D(考点:be in low spirits(情绪低落)。解析:由 even feared going to school 可知情绪低落,in low spirits 正确;in high spirits 情绪高涨正好相反;in danger/in surprise 与长期低落的状态不符。)
20 A(考点:notice sb doing(感官动词+现在分词作宾补)。解析:notice sb doing 表示注意到某人正在做某事,由 alone by the window 的场景可知是正坐着发呆;notice sb do 表示注意到动作全过程,sat 是过去式,to sit 结构错误。
21 B(考点:give up(放弃)。解析:因为几次失败就想放弃梦想,give up your dreams 合乎语境;put off 推迟,turn down 拒绝调低,worry about 担心,均与 dreams 搭配后不合句意。)
22 C(考点:cut back on sth(削减,减少)。解析:建议减少花在游戏上的时间,Cut back on 为固定短语;Put up with 忍受,Get along with 相处,Look forward to 期待,均不合建议语境,需逐项代入排除。)
23 C(考点:have trust in(信任,名词)。解析:have a little trust in yourself 意为对自己有一点信心,前有冠词 a little 须填名词 trust;truth 真理、treat 款待、train 火车均为近形干扰,考查形近词辨析。)
24 A(考点:stick to(坚持,一般现在时)。解析:引语内 "If you ______ to this plan, everything will pay off" 为 if 引导的条件状语从句,主句用一般将来时 will pay off,从句须遵循"主将从现"原则,用一般现在时 stick;stuck 是过去式,sticking/to stick 时态结构错误。)
25 D(考点:stay focused(保持专注)。
He has been interested in trains since childhood
解析:由第三段 she believes an accountant must consider everything carefully 可知;想象丰富是 Li Dan 自己的特点,保持整齐是 Su Ming 的特点,善于合作是 Wang Ke 的特点,干扰项均来自其他人物,考查信息归属。)
解析:由上句 hard work at all times never lets you down 可知努力终会有好结果,pay off 意为奏效;花钱、结束、带来新问题均不合努力必有回报的语境。)
He remained calm on the stage 可知A正确;想当会计的是 Li Dan,从不给自己定高标准与 confident monitor 形象矛盾,challenges are chances 说明他认为挑战是机会而非可怕的事。)
解析:由第三段 parents should set a good example first 可知;B项 shouting 正是文中反对的方式,C、D 项内容文中未提及。)
Change will not come overnight, but it will come if the whole family works together
解析:由 a true champion is not a person who never falls, but a person who never refuses to rise 可知真正的冠军是跌倒后重新站起来的人;B正是被否定的说法,C把字面词 muscles and shoulders 混入,属于字面干扰。)
解析:由 she made it and won the gold medal 的并列结构可知 made it 意为成功了;failed again/gave up/felt sorry 与夺冠结果矛盾。)
40 B(考点:主旨推断(单元主题:Never give up)。解析:全文围绕跌倒后重新站起、永不放弃展开,giving up is the only real failure 点明主旨;B与 fair play 的体育精神不符,C、D均过度夸大单一因素。)
解析:由 the cactus saves water and works quietly 可知;只开几天花的是 lotus,仙人掌并不 attractive,生长速度文中未比较。)
Society needs different kinds of people
解析:由 uncle dropped out of school at sixteen... never looked down on him 可知;大学毕业、做研究的是 cousin,接管花园无中生有,干扰项均来自其他人物信息。)
解析:由上句 What's the matter 及下文谈论新同学可知,应说明烦恼的事由,C 项点出大男孩欺负新同学,引出下文;B/E 均未回应 What's the matter。)
解析:下句 No, he doesn't 表明上句是一般疑问句且询问他是否求助,选 D;其余选项与 No, he doesn't 无法构成问答。)
Let's go and talk to him;G 是 Ben 的附和,不合 Amy 的角色。)
51 It went from happy to sad.
52 He helped her read a passage and practice a dialogue.(考点:细节获取(日记二)。解析:由 helped her read a short passage... practiced a dialogue together 可知,答案须涵盖两个动作,只答其一不给满分。)
She was a musician when she was young 可知,问句为 what,回答用职业名词即可。)
54 It is a state of mind.(考点:观点理解(引言理解)。 Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind 可知,注意 not A but B 结构中真正的答案在 but 之后,学生常误答 a time of life。)
55 Growing up means learning to face problems bravely.(考点:开放归纳(主旨)。 Growing up brings both problems and happiness 等。)
56 accountant(考点:名词 accountant(会计)。
解析:make a decision 为固定搭配,应填名词;decide 是动词,make a decide 是典型搭配错误,de- 与 sion 的拼写常被写成 decition。)
解析:由 a wonderful 可知应填名词 performance;perform 是动词,give a performance 为固定搭配,-ance 后缀拼写是易错点。)
解析:be satisfied with 为固定搭配,主语是人应用 -ed 形容词;satisfying 修饰事物,学生常因 be satisfied with 记忆不牢而误填原形或 -ing 形式。)
66 too; to(考点:too...to...(太…… 解析:too 后接形容词 difficult,to 后接动词原形 work out 构成不定式;注意句中已给出 for me,学生只需识别 too...to... 结构;学生常误把 to 写成 that,与 so...that...
67 prefers; to(考点:prefer doing...to doing...(宁愿做…… 解析:prefer...to... 表示宁愿做前者而不愿做后者,主语 my cousin 为第三人称单数,prefer 须加 -s;to 为介词,后接动名词 getting up;注意 would rather do...than do...
68 not only; but also(考点:not only...but also(不但...
69 made; up(考点:make up one's mind(下定决心)。解析:make up one's mind 中 mind 用单数,主语 he 对应 his mind;has 后接过去分词 made,write maked 是不规则变化错误。)
70 didn't; until(考点:not...until(直到...
解析:After 为介词,后接动名词;stop 的 -ing 形式须双写 p 再加 -ing,写成 stoping 是拼写高频错误;stop to do 表示停下来去做,不合介词用法。)
75 organise(考点:动词 organise(整理,分类)。
76 When(考点:when 引导时间状语从句,当周末有空的时候。)
77 over(考点:短语 over time(随着时间推移)。解析:over time 为固定短语,表示社会随时间推移发生的变化;学生易受汉语影响误填 with,但 with time 须说 over/with the years,此处标准搭配为 over time。)
78 While(考点:时间状语从句:while(主从句均为过去进行时)。
80 keeping(考点:be worth doing(值得做)。解析:be worth 后接动名词 keeping,为固定结构;worth 后接 to keep 是高频错误,学生常类比 be important to do 而混淆。)

How to Deal with Stress
As a Grade 9 student, I am also under great stress. Exams and my parents' high expectations sometimes drive me mad, and I was in low spirits from time to time. Luckily, I have found some good ways to deal with it. First, when I feel worried, I communicate with my parents or teachers instead of keeping silent. Second, I stick to running for half an hour every day, which helps me relax and stay focused. Third, I cut back on my screen time and make a reasonable plan before doing homework. Little by little, stress no longer gets me down. In my opinion, stress can become a good friend if we face it bravely. Let's learn to manage it and enjoy our school life!
