When everyone’s so busy, it can be hard to keep in touch with the people who matter. Leela Morris’s solution was to set up a book club to regularly get all of her favourite people in one place.
“I had a series of conversations with people who said things like: ‘I enjoy reading, and I don’ t want to party as much any more,” says 34-year-old Leela Morris, recalling how the book club she founded seven years ago came into being. Her friend and fellow book club member Eva Roberts, 35, laughs in agreement: “I remember texting you on my way back from a party, thinking: ‘I’ m too old for this, I need something a bit more healthy!”
And they weren’t alone. Soon Morris had gathered a group of five other regular members including her mum Linda. “Then there’ s Paige, who I used to work with, and Astrid, who I lived with in Paris,” Roberts adds, going on to mention “horse-crazy” Abi, and Louisa, who’s originally from Brazil, and who was looking for a few more friends in London.
As she continues, it’s clear to see the appreciation for the friendships strengthened through the club, as well as the conversations shared and the memories made. In short, Roberts says, they all just “click”.
The friends insist there have never been any heated arguments over the books’ themes or topics — instead, they say, it has really helped “open up conversations” among the group. “Because there are no rules — apart from whoever chooses the book, hosts the gathering event — there are no limits to what is chosen. In some book clubs it’s only fiction, but here there are no limits and you read things you wouldn’t normally read,” says Morris. “The different viewpoints have really opened my eyes to lots of books and subjects.”
4. According to the passage, what did Morris and Roberts both consider in their 30s?
A. Making more friends. B. Reading more novels.
C. Attending fewer parties. D. Focusing more on health.
5. Who was a roommate of Roberts?
A. Abi. B. Louisa. C. Paige. D. Astrid.
6. In para 4, what does Roberts probably mean by saying they “click”?
A. They are always on time. B. They do similar jobs.
C. They get on well with each other. D. They have various personalities.
7. What’s the rule of Morris’s book club?
A. Fiction cannot be chosen. B. Who picks the book is the host.
C. Arguments are not allowed. D. The events are hosted by turns.
C 5. D 6. C 7. B
由文章第二段“‘I had a series of conversations with people who said things like: ‘I enjoy reading, and I don’ t want to party as much any more,’ says 34-year-old Leela Morris, recalling how the book club she founded seven years ago came into being. Her friend and fellow book club member Eva Roberts, 35, laughs in agreement: ‘I remember texting you on my way back from a party, thinking: ‘I’ m too old for this, I need something a bit more healthy!’(34岁的Leela Morris回忆起她七年前创立的读书俱乐部是如何成立的,她说:‘我和一些人进行了一系列的交谈,他们说:‘我喜欢读书,我不想再参加那么多聚会了。’’她的朋友、35岁的读书俱乐部成员伊娃·罗伯茨(Eva Roberts)也笑着表示赞同:‘我记得在聚会回来的路上给你发短信,心想:‘我年纪太大了,不能做这个,我需要更健康的东西!’’)”可知,Morris 和 Roberts都考虑在30多岁时减少参加聚会。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第三段“Then there’ s Paige, who I used to work with, and Astrid, who I lived with in Paris,(然后是Paige,我曾经和他一起工作过,还有Astrid,我在巴黎和她住在一起,)”可知,Astrid曾是Roberts的室友。
由文章第四段“As she continues, it’s clear to see the appreciation for the friendships strengthened through the club, as well as the conversations shared and the memories made. In short, Roberts says, they all just ‘click’.(随着她的继续,很明显,通过俱乐部加强了对友谊的欣赏,以及分享的对话和留下的回忆。简而言之,罗伯茨说,他们都只是‘click’。)”可知,通过俱乐部加强了对友谊的欣赏,由此可推知,Roberts可能是说他们相处得很好,友谊得以加强。故选C项。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。由文章最后一段“Because there are no rules— apart from whoever chooses the book, hosts the gathering event— there are no limits to what is chosen. (因为没有规则——除了谁选择这本书,谁主持聚会活动——所以选择的东西没有限制。)”可知,Morris读书俱乐部的规则是谁挑书谁主持。故选B项。
C
Alex, 13, recently began playing the saxophone His grandpa played with a local band ( 乐 队), and Alex wanted to follow in his footsteps. Alex’s grandpa was so excited that he paid for six months of private lessons.
But now, two months in, Alex is starting to get tired of those lessons. He just isn’t getting the hang of how to play and he’s not having fun. Plus, he wants to join the soccer team, and he knows he won't have time for the sax and soccer.
Alex should just quit ( 停 止) the sax, right? But wait. You’ve probably heard that you should never give up. That’s often good advice. However, quitting isn’t always the “wrong” choice; in fact, experts say that in certain situations, it can be healthy. “There’s a misunderstanding among kids that you're closing a door when you quit,” says Phyllis Fagell, a school counselor in Washington, D.C. “We only have so many hours in a day, and often when we close one door, that just allows another to open.”
Still, quitting is a big decision, so it’s worth taking time to think before you make it. Instead of giving up right now on something you’ve loved for years, Fagell recommends waiting. When times get easier, you can reevaluate ( 再 评 估). Maybe you’ll find that you miss the activity and pick it back up, or maybe you'll find something new.
Once you understand the reasons you’re thinking of quitting, you’re ready to evaluate and make a decision. Say you love soccer, but your friends are all better players than you. Is that a good reason to quit? Probably not. On the other hand, you could be a star player — and hate playing. Being talented doesn’t mean you have to continue. Will quitting disappoint (使……失 望) your teammates, coach, and family? Maybe. But you don't have to stick with something just to make others happy.
8. Why did Alex want to give up the saxophone?
A. He couldn’t afford the lessons. B. He didn't really like playing it.
C. He disliked following his grandpa. D. He had no time to organize a soccer team.
9. What does Fagell think of quitting an interest?
A. It may be a new start. B. It may do harm to health.
C. It may be a waste of time. D. It may cause misunderstandings.
10. What does the author suggest we do when we want to quit?
A. Talk with those who love you. B. Find out what you are good at.
C. Spend time thinking about it. D. Wait till a new interest appears.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Is it ever OK to quit? B. Alex’s rise as a sax star
C. Why do people easily quit? D. Fagell’s study on students' hobbies
B 9. A 10. C 11. A
根据第二段中“But now, two months in, Alex is starting to get tired of those lessons. He just isn’t getting the hang of how to play and he’s not having fun.(但现在,两个月过去了,亚历克斯开始对这些课程感到厌倦。他就是没掌握演奏的技巧,而且也不开心。)”可知,亚历克斯想放弃萨克斯管是因为他不太喜欢演奏它。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中““There’s a misunderstanding among kids that you're closing a door when you quit,” says Phyllis Fagell, a school counselor in Washington, D. C. “We only have so many hours in a day, and often when we close one door, that just allows another to open.”(华盛顿特区的学校辅导员菲利斯·法格尔说:“孩子们有一个误解,认为当你放弃时,你就是在关上一扇门。”“我们一天只有这么多小时,通常当我们关上一扇门时,那只是让另一扇门打开。”)”可知,法格尔认为放弃一种兴趣可能是一个新的开始。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Still, quitting is a big decision, so it’s worth taking time to think before you make it.(尽管如此,放弃是一个重大的决定,所以在做出决定之前花时间思考是值得的。)”
通读全文,尤其是根据第三段中“However, quitting isn’t always the “wrong” choice; in fact, experts say that in certain situations, it can be healthy.(然而,放弃并不总是“错误”的选择;事实上,专家说,在某些情况下,放弃可能是健康的。)”
D
AI has a water problem, which worries us a lot. People are increasingly using AI tools in their daily personal and professional lives. A significant amount of heat is produced by the energy required to power the tools. This heat is released into data centers, which provide those AI systems with the computational (计算的) support and storage space they need to function.
There are no regulations (规章) for AI and no laws requiring technology companies to deal with the problem. That’s led scientists like Shaolei Ren, an associate professor at UC Riverside, to investigate this question independently. As he notes, cooling down the data centers requires a large amount of water, similar to the amount used by tens of thousands of residents. “When you use water for a shower, for example, it can be repurposed,” says Ren, whose research is focused on how to make AI more socially and environmentally responsible. “When water is evaporated (蒸发) to cool down a data center, it’s gone.”
Even before the current AI development, data centers’ water and energy demands had steadily increased. In 2022, according to Google, its data centers used over five billion gallons of water, 20 percent more than in 2021; Microsoft used 34 percent more water companywide in 2022 than in 2021.
AI stands only to compound the existing resource demand that data centers create for the global energy system: In 2026, electricity consumption (消耗) at data centers because of the increasing use of AI will double the amount in 2022, the International Energy Agency says.
“I explain it in terms my kid understands,” says Ren. “If you have a conversation with ChatGPT for 10 to 50 questions and answers, it will use about 500 milliliters of water, or the size of a standard bottle of water. This shocking water consumption shows how necessary it is for the technology industry to put more money in and develop energy-saving AI to cut down on such waste to ensure the digital inventions don’t come at the expense of our planet’s resources.”
12. What is the main issue discussed in the text?
A. The safety risks of AI.
B. The limited computational support.
C. The energy consumption by AI.
D. The high cost of building data centers.
13. How does water used for data centers differ from shower water?
A. It’s cleaner in quality. B. It cannot be reused.
C. It consumes less water. D. It’s treated with chemicals.
14. What does the underlined word “compound” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Slow down. B. Connect with. C. Add to. D. Sweep away.
15. What’s the purpose of Ren’s words in the last paragraph?
A. To encourage the use of AI.
B. To highlight the power of AI.
C. To provide the exact data for researchers.
D. To call for the development of greener AI.
C 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第一段中“AI has a water problem, which worries us a lot. People are increasingly using AI tools in their daily personal and professional lives. A significant amount of heat is produced by the energy required to power the tools.(人工智能存在用水难题,这让我们十分担忧。人们在日常个人生活与工作中越来越多地使用人工智能工具。驱动这些工具运转需要消耗能源,而这会产生大量热量)”以及全文围绕AI带来的资源消耗问题展开的论述可知,本文核心讨论的是AI运行带来的能源与水资源消耗问题。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“When you use water for a shower, for example, it can be repurposed(比如你洗澡用过的水,是可以被二次利用的)”和“When water is evaporated (蒸发) to cool down a data center, it’s gone.(当水被蒸发用来给数据中心降温时,它就彻底消失了)”可知,数据中心用来降温的水被直接蒸发,无法像洗澡水一样被重复利用。
根据第四段“AI stands only to compound the existing resource demand that data centers create for the global energy system: In 2026, electricity consumption (消耗) at data centers because of the increasing use of AI will double the amount in 2022, the International Energy Agency says.(人工智能只会compound数据中心给全球能源系统带来的现有资源压力:国际能源署称,到2026年,由于人工智能使用量持续增长,数据中心的耗电量将达到2022年的两倍)”可知,AI的普及会进一步叠加、加重数据中心原本就存在的资源消耗压力,因此compound的含义是“增加、叠加”。
根据最后一段中“This shocking water consumption shows how necessary it is for the technology industry to put more money in and develop energy-saving AI to cut down on such waste to ensure the digital inventions don’t come at the expense of our planet’s resources.(这种惊人的耗水量表明,科技行业有必要投入更多资金研发节能型AI,减少这类浪费,确保数字发明不会以消耗地球资源为代价)”可知,Ren的表述是为了呼吁行业开发更环保、低能耗的绿色AI技术。

Helen’s father Jason had smoked for almost ten years. Smoking had become a daily habit for him. He smoked after meals, while working, and even when he rested at home. Every time he lit a cigarette, thin white smoke filled the room, leaving a strong, unpleasant smell on his clothes and hair.
Helen had long disliked her father’s smoking habit. She learned from her teacher that smoking was really harmful to people’s health. It could hurt the lungs, cause bad coughs and even lead to serious illnesses. What worried Helen most was that her father often coughed badly at night. Besides, second-hand smoke was also bad for the whole family’s health. She had tried to ask her father to give up smoking many times, but Jason always shook his head and said it was too hard for him to stop.
One Sunday afternoon, Helen saw her father smoking again in the yard. He looked tired after a whole week’s work. Helen walked over quietly and did not blame (责怪) him at once. Instead, she sat beside him and talked with him gently. She told her father how worried she was about his health. She said she hoped her father could accompany (陪伴) her to grow up.
To encourage her father, Helen prepared a small notebook. She planned to record every day when her father did not smoke. She also promised to give him a small gift if he could keep not smoking for a month. Jason looked at his daughter’s sincere eyes and felt warm and guilty in his heart. He knew his daughter loved him deeply. He finally made up his mind to break this bad habit for his family.

However, in the first few days, Jason couldn’t help smoking secretly. The urge to smoke struck him constantly, especially after meals and when he felt tired. He even took out a cigarette and lit it secretly in the bedroom. But the moment he saw Helen’s notebook lying on the table, guilt flooded his heart. He put out the cigarette immediately and decided to stick to his promise. Helen noticed his struggle but never blamed him. Instead, she cheered him up and shared interesting stories with him to distract his attention.
Two months later, Jason managed to stay away from cigarettes. He finally got rid of the bad habit and no longer suffered from bad coughs. The unpleasant smell at home disappeared completely, and the whole family felt much healthier. To celebrate his success, Helen gave him a delicate gift as promised. Jason hugged Helen tightly, saying it was the most precious gift he had ever received. He realized that nothing was more important than the health and happiness of his family.
