Our church in Toronto has a unique way to help those who are in trouble: cash is placed in an envelope with only the name of the person who needs help. No one knows who gives the money.
There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. We did not talk about our economic difficulty with any child, but they might notice we had to cut back on many things. Still, we hoped they were not aware of the poor situation, nor of how much their father and I were suffering because of it.
Despite our efforts, our situation didn’t improve, and my husband and I had to look for outside help. Just when we felt completely hopeless, we were overjoyed to receive a gift from the church — an envelope with money that helped us through that tough time. We were extremely grateful but couldn’t help wondering who had given such a generous gift.
A year later, our seventeen-year-old son was applying for a student loan to attend university, we discovered his savings account was almost empty. We were very upset because we had trusted him to save part of his earnings from his part-time job for his education. He had been working hard since he was nine, and we knew how much effort he had put into saving that money.
I asked him repeatedly to tell me where the money had gone. But he would not tell me, which made me much angrier and I decided to find out where the money had gone.
Finally, in tears, my son admitted that he had put his savings in the offering box for us willingly. It had taken him years to save that money! I stood there speechless, tears filling my eyes.
4. What did the writer and her husband do with any child when they were in trouble?
A. They hid the bad news. B. They told them to work.
C. They asked children for cash. D. They sent them to one church.
5. What can we infer from the story?
A The son cheated his parents about the part-time job.
B. The parents thought the gift came from the church.
C. The son loved his parents and wanted to help them.
D. The parents got help from the church all the time.
6. How did the mother feel after knowing the truth?
A. Angry. B. Worried. C. Upset. D. Moved.
7. Which of the following can best describe the story?
A. Learn from past mistakes. B. Love given, love returned.
C. Think twice before acting. D. Rose given, flavor in hand.
C
Listening to music daily after the age of 70 could greatly lower the risk of developing a brain disease like dementia. A major study from Monash University discovered this by analyzing data from over 10,800 older adults. Those who often listened to music had a much lower chance of suffering from severe memory problems compared to those who seldom did. The research also explored the benefits of playing musical instruments, finding that people who played regularly also saw a significant drop in their risk.
The most powerful effects were seen in people who always listened to music. This group not only had a lower risk of the brain disease but also showed better overall thinking abilities and a stronger memory for daily events. Combining both listening and playing music offered even greater protection against mental decline. Researchers suggest that music could be a simple and effective way for older people to maintain their mental health.
This finding is especially important as societies around the world face the challenges of an aging population. With people living longer, conditions that affect memory and thinking are becoming more common, creating pressure on families and healthcare systems. Therefore, finding easy-to-use methods to support brain health is a public health priority.
According to the lead scientist, with no known cure for such brain diseases, finding ways to prevent or delay them is extremely important. The study adds to evidence that our brain’s health is not fixed. It can be influenced by our personal choices and environment. Thus, activities like listening to or playing music may be powerful lifestyle tools to promote a healthy mind as we age.
8. What benefit did regular music listeners show?
A. They never got sick.
B. They lived longer than others.
C. They all learned to play instruments.
D. They had better memory of daily events.
9. Why is music considered a good method for brain health?
A. It is a new scientific discovery.
B. It is more popular than other activities.
C. It is easy for most older people to access.
D. It can replace all other medical treatments.
10. What is the key message of the research?
A. Brain health is only decided by age and genes.
B. Older adults should avoid all social activities.
C. Only listening to music is helpful for the mind.
D. Lifestyle choices can influence our brain’s aging process.
11. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. A New Cure for Brain Diseases
B. The Challenges of an Aging Population
C. Music: A Simple Way to Protect the Aging Brain
D. How to Play a Musical Instrument

Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand differently.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger”. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put the vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach audience of the world without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.
In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios. Now, anyone with a camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people communicating with their fans about everyday lives.
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame and money. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.
Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm, and is always a learning experience. And that’s enough for him.
12. Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers?
A. Because vloggers can earn little fame and money on the Internet.
B. Because there is too much competition in the traditional show business.
C. Because the Internet makes it convenient to become vloggers.
D. Because anyone with a camera will surely become a star.
13. What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?
A. Only a few vloggers can be successful.
B A vlogger cannot earn fame or money.
C. People seldom see the bright side of being a vlogger.
D. Dreams will always remain to be dreams.
14. What do young people like David do on the Internet?
A. Learn from others. B. Become an online hit.
C. Hold running races. D. Mix jobs with hobbies.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Most Britons choose to be vloggers as their jobs now.
B. The Internet is influencing young Britons’career choice.
C. The Internet is taking the place of traditional studios.
D. Young Britons cannot find jobs without the Internet.

Dayna and I are best friends. Cupcakes turned us into fierce competitors. As we prepared for the annual Baking Competition at the Baking Club, I confidently told her, “Prepare to be amazed.” She shot me a skeptical look. The event was packed with family and friends, and I was determined to beat last year’s champion, Dayna.
Mrs. Cooper from Cathy’s Cupcake and Donut Depot kicked off the competition by announcing that the first round was to bake mini cupcakes. The clock started ticking. Measuring spoons pinged against bowls. Clouds of flour settled on the countertops. Mixers whirred. Everything was going perfectly, and I tasted my creation. Mmm. Bright and amazing. Then I glanced over to see how Dayna was doing. She had accidentally dropped a dozen eggs! I turned off my mixer and rushed over to her station to help her clean up, praying my good deed wouldn’t ruin my chances.
After the mess was cleared, everyone including Dayna continued baking, and the judges tasted our cupcakes. When the results came in, I was thrilled to hear my name called for Round 2 alongside Dayna and a few others. The challenge this time was to bake standard cupcakes, but just then, I realized I’d forgotten to bring my candies for decoration. In a panic, I signaled Dayna, who kindly offered butter crackers and banana chips. Thanks to her, I was back on track. As we worked through the round, Mrs. Cooper announced that Dayna and I were moving on to the final round: colossal cupcakes (巨型杯子蛋糕).
I made it. Whew. I can’t let her win again. “You showed some mad skills, Isaac,” Dayna said, her voice laced with respect. I shrugged. “You too. Thanks for saving me before.”
“No problem. May the best baker win,” she said.
I smiled. “Enough with the pleasantries. Now I’m out for sweet revenge.”
Dayna narrowed her eyes. “Bring it.”

Running with Love
To raise money for people in earthquake-stricken areas, our school held the event Running with Love — Charity Marathon for Earthquake-stricken Areas last Saturday.
The track was filled with enthusiastic participants including students, teachers and even some parents. They ran passionately, cheering each other on. Some students held donation boxes, and many passers-by stopped to contribute generously. Everyone’s face was filled with determination and kindness.
The event was a great success. It not only raised a large sum of money but also spread the spirit of love and unity. We believe the warmth will be passed on and help the disaster-affected people rebuild their homes soon.

【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Final round. I sprang into action. Measuring and mixing, I grated dark chocolate and sprinkled it over the dough, determined to create a showstopper. Dayna wouldn’t know what hit her. I filled each cupcake mold and got my colossals into the oven. At Dayna’s station, three different layers — chocolate, vanilla and strawberry — sat ready. That would be a masterpiece. Unfortunately, the beautiful layered look she wanted was turning into a tie-dye effect. Still, she wasn’t giving up. At last, my colossal cupcakes were nothing short of elegance. Dayna’s turned out way better than I’d expected. As we waited for the final results, Dayna expressed doubt about her cupcakes, but I wasn’t sure of my own outcome either.
After a tense few minutes, the winner was announced: “Isaac!” I blinked with disbelief. As thunderous applause erupted, I gave a small bow. “Congratulations, Isaac!” My best friend clapped along with the crowd. I gave Dayna a shy smile. “Couldn’t have done it without you, Dayna. Thanks for saving me before.” Despite the competition, we were still a team, and that night, I called Dayna to discuss our next move. “So now we’re tied,” I said. “One win each.” She asked, “Already planning for next year?” I replied with a grin, “You can bet on it!” In that moment, I realized that no matter what the outcome was, our friendship was the sweetest victory of all.
