Every morning at 5 a.m. when most people are asleep, a single figure would be busy in the kitchen, cooking meals for the needy folks of Singapore until the rest of the volunteers and the four full-time cooks arrive. Day in and day out, Mr Tony Tay and his team prepare, cook, pack and deliver the food to various parts of the island. This team of caring volunteers from all walks of life work tirelessly to bring a smile to the less privileged, bringing warmth and kindness into their lives.
During one of his visits to collect vegetables and distribute them to a less-privileged neighbourhood, his wife noticed that the elderly folk did not take the vegetables. When Mrs Tay asked for the reason, one replied that she could not cook and thus only ate the rice delivered to her. Mrs Tay then offered to cook for her, and that single meal initiated Willing Hearts, which has since served nearly 650,000 meals and counting.
Since the organization’s early days, volunteers have learned how to cook, interact with people from all walks of life, pick up different languages, gain greater knowledge about social issues, and most importantly, build strong bonds with one another. Through Willing Hearts, Mr Tay hopes to expose the younger generation to the country’s backyard, to allow them to see and experience firsthand what goes on behind closed doors. This is to encourage them to become more compassionate individuals who understand the importance of taking care of the elderly, and be inspired to foster unity within their own families. His best gift during the course of this journey is seeing how younger volunteers help and feed the less privileged. One volunteer, he proudly tells us, has been inspired to start his own programme to help the needy.
As a non-profit organization, Willing Hearts relies heavily on donations and food collections. Although the volunteers at Willing Hearts may be a small and irregular group, they are always on the lookout for the poor to extend their assistance to them.
4. What inspired Tony Tay and his wife to start Willing Hearts?
A. The need to raise money for the poor. B. The lack of volunteers in Singapore.
C. An old woman’s difficulty in cooking. D. Their dream of becoming full-time cooks.
5. What does the underlined word “backyard” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. The garden behind a house. B. The hidden social problems.
C. The kitchen where food is prepared. D. The volunteer team of Willing Hearts.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Tony Tay?
A. Devoted and inspiring. B. Humorous and creative.
C. Organized and easy-going. D. Knowledgeable and modest.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Tony Tay: A Cook for the Elderly Folks
B. Volunteers: Serving Local Communities
C. Younger Generation: Caring for the Elderly
D. Willing Hearts: Bringing Kindness to the Needy
C 5. B 6. A 7. D

根据第二段“When Mrs Tay asked for the reason, one replied that she could not cook and thus only ate the rice delivered to her. Mrs Tay then offered to cook for her, and that single meal initiated Willing Hearts, which has since served nearly 650,000 meals and counting. (当泰太太询问原因时,有人回答说她不会做饭,所以只能吃送来的米饭。随后泰女士主动提出为她做饭,而就是这一餐,催生了 “爱心志愿团”。该组织至今已送出近 65 万份餐食,数量仍在持续增加。)”可知,一位老妇人在烹饪方面遇到的困难促使托尼·泰和他的妻子创办了Willing Hearts组织。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Since the organization’s early days, volunteers have learned how to cook, interact with people from all walks of life, pick up different languages, gain greater knowledge about social issues, and most importantly, build strong bonds with one another.(自该组织成立之初起,志愿者们就学会了烹饪、与各行各业的人交流、掌握多种语言、深入了解社会问题,而最重要的是,他们彼此之间也建立了深厚的友谊)”以及后文“to allow them to see and experience firsthand what goes on behind closed doors(让他们能够亲眼目睹并亲身感受那些紧闭的门后所发生的一切)”可知,指代隐性社会问题。
根据第一段“Day in and day out, Mr Tony Tay and his team prepare, cook, pack and deliver the food to various parts of the island. This team of caring volunteers from all walks of life work tirelessly to bring a smile to the less privileged, bringing warmth and kindness into their lives.(日复一日,托尼·泰先生和他的团队精心准备、烹饪、打包并将食物送到岛上的各个地方。来自各行各业的这些充满爱心的志愿者们不辞辛劳地工作,为那些生活贫困的人们带来微笑,为他们的生活带来温暖和善意)”以及第三段“This is to encourage them to become more compassionate individuals who understand the importance of taking care of the elderly, and be inspired to foster unity within their own families.(此举旨在鼓励他们成长为更有同情心的人,懂得关爱老年人的重要性,并激励他们促进家庭内部的团结)”可知,托尼·泰乐于奉献且鼓舞人心。
根据第二段“Mrs Tay then offered to cook for her, and that single meal initiated Willing Hearts, which has since served nearly 650,000 meals and counting.(泰夫人随后主动提出为她做饭,这一简单的举动促成了“爱心厨房”的诞生。此后,该组织已累计提供近65万份餐食,而且数量还在不断增加)”文章主要说明了Tony Tay夫妇因一位老人不会做饭创办公益组织 Willing Hearts。志愿者们持续送餐助人,该组织也影响了年轻人,依靠捐助默默帮扶弱势群体。可知,D选项“Willing Hearts:将善意带给无助之人”最符合文章标题。
C
Have you ever felt that mosquitoes love you more than others? While your friends remain untouched, you find yourself constantly hunted by these annoying insects. Well, it’s not your imagination. Science confirms that around 20% of people are naturally high attractors, or mosquito magnets, who are more often targeted year after year — and biology is to blame.
The primary signal that draws mosquitoes from a distance is the carbon dioxide (CO₂) we breathe out. Capable of spotting a stream of CO₂ from up to 30 meters away, mosquitoes use this gas as a “dinner bell” signaling that a warm-blooded host is nearby. Once they pick up this clue, they start moving toward the source.
However, as mosquitoes get closer, your unique body smell becomes the deciding factor. Our skin is home to millions of microbes (微生物) that break down natural oils and sweat, producing a complex cocktail of chemical compounds. According to a significant study published in the journal Cell, individuals who are mosquito magnets tend to produce much higher levels of specific types of acids on their skin. These acids act like an irresistible smell to mosquitoes. In contrast, those less attractive produce more ketones, which seem to mask their smells, making them invisible to mosquitoes.
To test this, researchers designed an experiment in a large enclosed arena — about the size of a land-skating rink. They released mosquitoes and observed how they chose between different people. The results showed that mosquitoes consistently flew toward those with certain skin smells.
Other factors like body heat, sweat, and genetic makeup also play a role. Since our skin microbiome is largely genetically determined, being a mosquito magnet is often a matter of bad luck.
Importantly, this research isn’t just about avoiding itchy bites. Every year, millions of people die from mosquito-borne diseases. Understanding how mosquitoes find us can inspire scientists to find better solutions. So next time mosquitoes buzz around you, remember: it’s not a curse—it’s science. And soon, we might have smarter ways to outsmart these bothersome biters.
8. What function does carbon dioxide serve for mosquitoes?
A. It acts as an appetizer. B. It provides a nutrient source.
C. It helps locate human’s presence. D. It distinguishes human skin types.
9. What is the key factor that makes some people more attractive to mosquitoes?
A. The microbes living on their skin. B. The natural oils produced by their skin.
C. A great deal of CO₂ breathed out by them. D. Large amounts of certain acids on their skin.
10. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Body temperature is the most critical factor.
B. Being a mosquito magnet is largely unchangeable.
C. Diet and lifestyle habits influence mosquitoes’ choices.
D. People can improve their genetic makeup to avoid mosquitoes.
11. According to the text, what might be the significance of the research?
A. Revealing how mosquitoes find targets.
B. Explaining why some people attract mosquitoes.
C. Contributing to how we battle against mosquitoes.
D. Proving that smell affects mosquitoes’ biting preferences.
C 9. D 10. B 11. C

根据第二段中“The primary signal that draws mosquitoes from a distance is the carbon dioxide (CO₂) we breathe out. Capable of spotting a stream of CO₂ from up to 30 meters away, mosquitoes use this gas as a “dinner bell” signaling that a warm-blooded host is nearby.(将蚊子从远处吸引过来的主要信号是我们呼出的二氧化碳。蚊子能够从30米外发现一股二氧化碳,它们将这种气体作为“开饭铃声”,表明附近有温血宿主)”可知,蚊子利用二氧化碳来定位温血宿主的存在,即帮助它们定位人类的存在。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“According to a significant study published in the journal Cell, individuals who are mosquito magnets tend to produce much higher levels of specific types of acids on their skin. These acids act like an irresistible smell to mosquitoes.(根据发表在《细胞》杂志上的一项重要研究,那些特别吸引蚊子的人往往会在皮肤上产生更高水平的特定类型的酸。这些酸对蚊子来说就像一种无法抗拒的气味)”可知,某些人皮肤上产生的大量特定类型的酸是吸引蚊子的关键因素。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Other factors like body heat, sweat, and genetic makeup also play a role. Since our skin microbiome is largely genetically determined, being a mosquito magnet is often a matter of bad luck.(其他因素如体温、汗液和基因构成也会产生影响。
D
There is no question that Generative Al will automate a large number of jobs, removing people from the workplace. But it will almost certainly take away human warmth from social life. Over the past 15 years, face-to-face socialization has already declined dramatically. Over time, many people may develop deep relationships with chatbots This seems likely to change our society at least as much as the social-media era has, and may start a new digital age that is even more anti-social.
Chatbots claim to know everything, yet they are also humble, treating the user as supreme. Anyone who has spent much time with chatbots will recognize that they tend to be pleasing. They seldom disagree or criticize. Chatbots built for commercial purposes are not typically intended to challenge your thoughts; they are intended to receive them, offer agreeable responses, and keep you coming back.
But in human relationship, conflict is unavoidable. It can be uncomfortable. Yet conflict can be meaningful — as a check on selfish behavior or over self-regard; as a chance to look more closely at other people; as a way to better understand the weaknesses and fears we all share. But chatbots will never tell you it’s bored or tell you to stop being so stupid and self-righteous. They never feel bored, complain or ask for help. They offer false friendship while helping people avoid real communication.
Therefore, the more time children spend with chatbots, the fewer opportunities they’ll have to develop alongside other people — and, as opposed to all the digital distractions (数字干扰设备) that have existed for decades, they may be fooled by the technology into thinking that they are, in fact, having a social experience. When kids project onto a bot and “talk” with it, they are fed information and affirmed (认可) by chatbots, thus missing out on something crucial in the process. They may never learn how to fail, or how to be creative. The whole learning process goes out of the window.
12. Why does the author say the new digital age is anti-social?
A. Because chatbots refuse to communicate.
B. Because people lack normal interpersonal interactions.
C. Because chatbots reject showing human warmth.
D. Because people will hate making friends on social media.
13. What do we know about commercial chatbots?
A. They prioritize satisfying users.
B. They push independent thinking.
C. They value users’ true feelings.
D. They encourage original ideas.
14. What is the main harm for children using chatbots according to the author?
A. They are hardly satisfied.
B. They are deeply addicted.
C. They are overly informed.
D. They are socially misled.
15. Which of the following may the author agree with?
A. We should embrace chatbots.
B. Say no to digital distractions.
C. A real-world friend matters.
D. Don’t ask a chatbot to help.
B 13. A 14. D 15. C

根据第一段中“But it will almost certainly take away human warmth from social life. Over the past 15 years, face-to-face socialization has already declined dramatically. Over time, many people may develop deep relationships with chatbots (聊天机器人). This seems likely to change our society at least as much as the social-media era has, and may start a new digital age that is even more anti-social.( 但它几乎肯定会剥夺社交生活中的人情味。在过去 15 年里,面对面的社交活动已经大幅减少。随着时间的推移,许多人可能会与聊天机器人建立起深厚的关系。这似乎可能会像社交媒体时代一样,极大地改变我们的社会,并可能开启一个更加反社会的数字时代。)”可知,第一段明确指出,新数字时代反社交的核心原因是:面对面社交大幅减少,很多人会和聊天机器人建立深度关系,取代了正常的人与人之间的互动。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Anyone who has spent much time with chatbots will recognize that they tend to be pleasing. They seldom disagree or criticize. Chatbots built for commercial purposes are not typically intended to challenge your thoughts; they are intended to receive them, offer agreeable responses, and keep you coming back.( 任何与聊天机器人相处过一段时间的人都会发现,它们往往令人愉悦。它们很少提出异议或批评。为商业目的而构建的聊天机器人通常无意挑战你的想法;它们的目的是接收你的想法,给出令人满意的回应,并让你不断回来使用它们。)”可知,商业聊天机器人的设计目标是“不挑战你的想法,只接收你的观点、提供令人愉悦的回应、让你不断回来使用”,其核心逻辑是优先满足用户的情绪需求。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Therefore, the more time children spend with chatbots, the fewer opportunities they’ll have to develop alongside other people — and, as opposed to all the digital distractions (数字干扰设备) that have existed for decades, they may be fooled by the technology into thinking that they are, in fact, having a social experience. When kids project onto a bot and “talk” with it, they are fed information and affirmed (认可) by chatbots, thus missing out on something crucial in the process.( 因此,孩子们与聊天机器人的相处时间越长,他们就有越少的机会与他人一起成长——而且,与几十年来一直存在的各种数字干扰相比,他们可能会被这种技术所迷惑,误以为自己正在经历一种社交体验。当孩子们将自己投射到机器人身上并与其“交谈”时,他们会从聊天机器人那里获得信息并得到肯定,从而错过了这个过程中至关重要的东西。)”可推知,根据作者的观点,儿童使用聊天机器人的主要危害是他们在社交层面被误导了。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章大意以及最后一段中“When kids project onto a bot and “talk” with it, they are fed information and affirmed by chatbots, thus missing out on something crucial in the process. They may never learn how to fail, or how to be creative. The whole learning process goes out of the window.( 当孩子们将自己投射到机器人身上并与其“交谈”时,他们会从聊天机器人那里获得信息并得到肯定,从而错过了这个过程中至关重要的东西。
Why is it that when you have the most to do you feel the least able to act? This sense of helplessness always seems to set in when you have a dozen things on your list, all equally pressing. ____16____ These expert tips can help you deal with it and put you back in control of all things.
Minimize the elephant task. You need to turn down your stress levels. Try taking a few deep breaths. If it’s a discouraging task that’s causing you to feel depressed, the advice is to break it into tiny steps. It’s like that old saying: How do you eat an elephant? ____17____ These steps should be quite small. The measuring stick is that your task should be so small that you feel no resistance. The steps also need to be concrete, restricting you to a time, location and duration when you’ll get a certain thing done. Take some of the pressure off, too, by telling yourself it’s OK if you do a bad job. ____18____
Encourage yourself. For an overwhelming (巨大的) list of lots of little to-dos, the key is to start strategically. ____19____ However, another option is to begin with the most enjoyable task. “We’re so focused on what should be done that we forget sometimes there are some wants in our heart, and following that can be very refreshing,” Dr Hendriksen said. “If all this has to get done, then I might as well approach the one where I feel the least resistance.”
Encouraging yourself can also help complete that task you really don’t want to do. If there’s an email you need to send that you keep putting off, promise yourself ten guilt-free minutes of Internet celebrity gossip (闲言碎语) afterward. ____20____ “You use something you like to do to reward something you don’t like to do,” Dr Hendriksen said. “That has been around for 50 years and it’s a very successful technique.”
A. One bite at a time.
B. Thus, you have no choice but to give up.
C. What do you feed an elephant in the zoo?
D. You could do the most important thing first.
E. Therefore, you’re stuck in how to even begin.
F. Or pair a pleasant task with an unpleasant one.
G. You can always come back and improve on it later.

上文“Take some of the pressure off, too, by telling yourself it’s OK if you do a bad job.(告诉自己就算做得不好也没关系,也可以缓解自身压力。)” G“You can always come back and improve on it later.(你随时可以回头完善、优化成果。)”
后文“However, another option is to begin with the most enjoyable task.(然而,还有一种方法是从最轻松愉悦的任务开始。)” D“You could do the most important thing first.(你可以优先完成最重要的事情。)”
上文“If there’s an email you need to send that you keep putting off, promise yourself ten guilt-free minutes of Internet celebrity gossip (闲言碎语) afterward.(如果你一直拖延发送邮件,可以承诺自己完成后,毫无负担地刷十分钟网红八卦。)” F“Or pair a pleasant task with an unpleasant one.(或者将愉悦的事情和枯燥的任务搭配进行。)”

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse sill, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened?”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly, an idea lashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that’s the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.

The next day, they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing plastic bags lying on the beach and floating in the sea. Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the present situation of the beach and asking people to take part in the clean-up.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on WeChat. To their amazement, their post went viral online immediately. Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that numerous people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to join in their clean-up.
