【Text 1】
W: The train leaves at nine, doesn't it?
M: It was, but it's been delayed by twenty minutes.
W: Then I'll have time to grab a coffee before we board.
【Text 2】
W: Good evening. Do you have a table for two?
M: Certainly. Would you prefer to sit by the window or near the fireplace?
W: By the window, please. We'd like to see the harbour while we eat.
【Text 3】
M: I'd like to return this novel. I bought it last week, but I already have a copy at home.
W: Certainly, sir. Would you like a refund or an exchange?
M: An exchange, please. Do you have anything on Chinese gardens?
【Text 4】
W: Hi, this is Maria speaking. I'm afraid I can't make it to the badminton court tonight.
M: Oh, that's a pity. Is everything all right?
W: Yes, it's just my ankle. It's still sore from the weekend. Could we try again on Thursday?
M: Thursday works for me. Thanks for letting me know.
【Text 5】
M: The traffic to the airport is terrible at this hour. Shall we take the underground?
W: It's cheaper, but with three suitcases it won't be easy.
M: There are lifts at both ends of the station, so it'll be fine.
W: All right, let's do that then. I'll buy the tickets online.
【Text 6】
W: Hi, Tom. Are you joining the school garden club this term?
M: I was thinking about the photography club, actually.
W: Really? I heard the garden club needs someone to take pictures for their new website.
M: That's a good point. Maybe I can do both.
W: The first meeting is on Wednesday after school in Room 12. Come and have a look.
M: I will. Thanks, Emma.
W: Don't forget your camera. And the two clubs meet on different days, so there's no clash.
M: Perfect. I'll do both, then.
W: By the way, the membership fee is only twenty yuan for the whole term.
M: That's cheap.
【Text 7】
M: Have you decided where to go for the spring trip?
W: I'm thinking about the mountain village, but the forecast says it will rain there all week.
M: What about the lake? It's sunny there this week, and the cycling route along the shore is wonderful.
W: But I don't have a bike.
M: You can rent one there. I did that last year, and it cost only thirty yuan a day.
W: That sounds great. I'll book the hotel tonight.
M: Let me know which one you choose. The good ones near the lake fill up quickly at this time of year.
W: Then I'd better call the one we stayed at two years ago.
M: Good idea. Lucy and Peter may want to come as well.
【Text 8】
M: So, Lisa, you worked at the city library last summer, right?
W: Yes, for six weeks. I sorted the returned books and helped at the children's reading corner.
M: What was the hardest part?
W: The children's corner, I'd say. They ask the most unexpected questions, and I often had to look things up before I could answer.
M: Did it pay well?
W: Not really, but I got free coffee every morning and, more importantly, a discount on any book I wanted.
M: How did you get the job?
W: I saw a notice on the library's website and sent in an application.
M: Would you do it again?
W: Certainly. I'm going back this summer.
【Text 9】
W: Dr. Lin, your team has just published a study on urban birds. What did you find?
M: We recorded the songs of the same species in ten cities and in nearby forests. City birds sing higher and faster.
W: Why is that?
M: In cities, low-pitched sounds are largely covered by traffic noise. Birds that sing higher are more likely to be heard, and so to find a partner.
W: Has the change happened quickly?
M: Very quickly. We compared recordings from the 1970s with today's and found a clear difference, which is remarkable for such a short time.
W: What should city planners do?
M: Plant more trees along roads. Trees not only absorb noise but also give birds places to rest.
W: Is there anything ordinary people can do?
M: Keep your windows closed at night during the breeding season.
W: And what is your next step?
M: We want to find out whether the same change is happening in small towns, where the traffic is lighter.
【Text 10】
N: Good morning, everyone. Before we start today's assembly, here are three announcements from the Students' Union.
First, the school sports meeting will be held on Friday next week instead of Thursday, because of the weather forecast. Please check the new schedule on the notice board. Students who have signed up for the long jump should go to the playground this afternoon to try the track.
Second, the charity sale for the children's hospital will take place in the school hall during the lunch break on Wednesday. We are still collecting second-hand books and toys. Please bring them to Room 201 before Tuesday afternoon. Clothes and shoes are not needed this year.
Third, the school choir needs two more members for the winter concert. If you enjoy singing, come to the music room at four o'clock on Thursday for a short try-out. No experience is needed.
That's all. Thank you.

A
Four Hotels That Will Make Your Life Easier
Marriott Detroit Airport
It's such an ideal option for business travelers in a hurry. Here is the basic idea: You download the iPhone or Android app. The night before, you can "check in" virtually. When you arrive, you get a message that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk.
Yotel New York
The self-service kiosks (一体机) at this high-tech New York hotel are open 24/7 and work just like the ones you'd see at an airport. There are just five steps to register and obtain your room card. There's even a luggage robot. You tap in the number of bags you're carrying, then wait for a robot arm to swing down and store your luggage in a locker.
Hyatt Regency Minneapolis
Business travelers like how the fast kiosk check-in works. Like the Yotel, the kiosk asks you to put in your credit card. The whole process takes about three minutes. When travelers leave, they can be equally impressed with the fast check-out. You never have to wait in line.
Radisson LaCrosse
The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster. You use a mobile app to register and then receive a password by email or text. When you get to the kiosk, you can scan the password to get your key without any other steps required. It's incredibly fast.
21. Which hotel has the self-service luggage locker?
A. Marriott Detroit Airport. B. Yotel New York.
C. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis. D. Radisson LaCrosse.

You download the iPhone or Android app",Radisson LaCrosse 一段说"You use a mobile app to register",两家都可用手机 App 办理入住,故选 D。
23. What's the main purpose of the text?
A. To assess the service of the hotels.
B. To criticize the service of the hotels.
C. To recommend hotels with fast service.
D. To help customers check in and check out.
Four Hotels That Will Make Your Life Easier",正文依次介绍四家酒店如何让入住、退房更快捷,落点在"推荐",故选 C。

B
I'm Savannah and I remember beginning to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.
In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving, I thought about all the places I was going to see — the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving and never to come back to was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of being positive but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost — having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to "the hard times".
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with immigration (移民) officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.
From my experiences, I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles go away at last! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.
24. What did Savannah miss most about home when leaving for America?
A. Her dear friends and relatives. B. The radio programme for pupils.
C. The country she was leaving. D. The places she was familiar with.
I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children"点明她最不舍的是每天早晨收听的学生广播节目,故选 B。第二段明确说与亲友告别时"cried very little",可排除 A。
25. What was Savannah's attitude to her life changes in New York?
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Pessimistic. D. Desperate.
【答案】A
The four years that followed taught me the importance of being positive",末段"Something good is certain to happen in the end... I believe that my life will turn out all right",均体现积极乐观,故选 A。
26. Why was Savannah increasingly responsible in her family?
A. For her family moved more frequently.
B. For her mother ended up in divorce.
C. For her English was better than others.
D. For she disagreed with her stepfather.
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home"直接给出原因,故选 C。
27. What does Savannah think about her future life?
A. Her future will be loaded with more troubles.
B. It will be difficult to learn to become mature.
C. There will be more good days than expected.
D. Good things will happen if she keeps trying.
Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little"说明只要坚持不放弃,好事终会出现,故选 D。
C
On the eve of this week's rail strikes, it was reported that the industry bosses are planning to weed out paper train tickets and close almost 1,000 station ticket offices in England. The transport secretary, Grant Shapps, has made no secret of his desire to see costs saved in this way. Some stations sell only a handful of tickets each week and the vast majority of transactions (交易) have moved online.
In the name of cost-cutting, station ticket offices are likely to follow the telephone booth on the corner and become a memory. For those who have grown used to the benefits of organizing travel via smart phones, there will be little to feel sorry for. But for people without online access or skills, who tend to be older, poorer, and more fragile, another social barrier will have been built.
From medical appointments to payment apps for parking, more and more key services are now delivered digitally. As this revolution takes place, the interests of a significant minority are being ignored to some extent. In the case of health and social care, for example, it will often be those most in need of assistance who are least able to employ electronic devices.
The debate over ticket offices offers an opportunity to reflect more broadly on the increasing role of technology in our social landscape. The unavoidable trend towards technology is predictable, but its possible consequences need to be managed with more care. With the expanding range and increasing complexity of digital requirements, the aged are gradually withdrawing from more and more social services in their lives. Ros Altmann, the former pensions minister, recently wrote of being contacted by an elderly woman who no longer drives to her local park, because she cannot download the car parking app required.
Much more needs to be invested in helping people gain easy online access. Alternative offline options must be maintained for important services. Contactable telephone numbers of relevant staff should always be available. These will cost more. But that is the price of digital transformation.
28. What does the underlined "weed out" mean in the first paragraph?
A. Pass on to. B. Give in to. C. Get rid of. D. Put up with.
由该句"planning to weed out paper train tickets and close almost 1,000 station ticket offices"及后文"the vast majority of transactions have moved online"可知,纸质车票正被淘汰,weed out 意为"清除、淘汰",故选 C。
29. What will the plan to sell tickets online bring to some people?
A. Another social barrier. B. A cheaper way to travel.
C. More time spent at stations. D. A chance to learn new skills.
【答案】A
But for people without online access or skills... another social barrier will have been built"(对不会或不习惯上网的人而言,又将竖起一道社会壁垒),故选 A。第三段进一步指出被忽视的是"a significant minority",第四段以"the aged are gradually withdrawing from more and more social services"作证。
30. What can be inferred about the digital transformation?
A. It will meet the demand of consumers.
B. It will cost much less than planned.
C. It will need to be updated constantly.
D. It will result in new social problems.
第二段指出线上售票为老年人等群体"built another social barrier",第四段"its possible consequences need to be managed with more care",可见数字化转型会带来新的社会问题,故选 D。B 项与末段"These will cost more"相反。
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The accessibility of important offline services.
B. The attitudes of the elderly towards technology.
C. The pros and cons of marketing tickets online.
D. The barriers caused by digital transformation.
D
Florida wildlife officials say manatees (海牛) facing starvation are benefiting from a program that feeds them on tons of donated lettuce (生菜). The program aims to save as many of the large animals as possible as water pollution has led to shortages of their favorite food, seagrass.
The effort has provided the manatees with more than 25 tons of lettuce. The feedings usually draw about 300 to 350 manatees per day. Sometimes, there are as many as 800 manatees. Normally, wildlife experts advise against people feeding wild animals. This is because it can lead the animals to make an unhealthy connection between humans and food. It is a crime in Florida for a person to feed manatees on their own, even though officials say many people want to do so. Experts believe the best way people can help is to donate money through an official institution (机构).
In 2021, 1,101 manatee deaths were reported, largely from starvation. The normal five-year average is about 625 deaths. State wildlife officials say that so far this year, 164 manatee deaths have been recorded. Tom Reinert, the local director of the state's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said the feeding program has helped to reduce the rising death rates. Officials estimate there are about 8,800 manatees in Florida waters. That is a big improvement from about 2,000 that existed in the 1990s. The increased numbers were responsible for manatees being removed from the endangered species list.
The most important element for supporting the remaining population will be restoring seagrass beds. So far, Florida has set aside $8 million to deal with that problem. "You can't just go out and plant a bunch of seagrass," Reinert said. But he added, "Projects are getting started and are in the planning stages."
32. What is the program intended to do?
A. To reduce food waste.
B. To study manatees' eating habits.
C. To rescue large animals from starvation.
D. To solve the problem of water pollution.
第一段首句"manatees facing starvation are benefiting from a program"及"The program aims to save as many of the large animals as possible",说明项目旨在救助饥饿的海牛,故选 C。
33. What do experts advise the public to do for manatees?
A. Feed healthy food to them.
B. Set up special rescue groups.
C. Pay more visits to wildlife reserves.
D. Offer financial aid to official organizations.
Experts believe the best way people can help is to donate money through an official institution",即通过官方机构捐款,故选 D。A 项与"advise against people feeding wild animals"相悖。
34. Which of the following can best describe the feeding program?
A. Impractical. B. Significant. C. Complicated. D. Time-consuming.
第三段"the feeding program has helped to reduce the rising death rates",且海牛数量由 1990 年代的约 2,000 头增至约 8,800 头,可见该项目成效显著(significant),故选 B。
35. What's the best title for the text?
A. Manatee Saving Program B. Ocean Protecting Program
C. Manatee Feeding Program D. Seagrass Beds Restoring Program
【答案】A

Do you think studying in a different country is something that sounds very exciting? Certainly, it is a new experience, which brings the opportunity of discovering fascinating things and a feeling of freedom. ____36____ You will experience culture shock. Moreover, people don't treat you like a guest anymore. Everything that seemed to be so wonderful at first is now awful, and everything makes you feel distressed and tired.

A Wonderful Outdoor Activity
Among all kinds of outdoor activities, I strongly recommend hiking.
Hiking is gentle on the knees and accessible to almost everyone. A pair of comfortable shoes and a backpack are all you need. Walking along a mountain path, you can breathe fresh air, enjoy the green scenery and forget the pressure of study for a while. Besides, hiking with friends teaches us to help each other and never give up.
So why not put down your phone, step out of the classroom and embrace nature this weekend? I am sure you will fall in love with it.
(Walking along a mountain path, you can...)
A group of poor people live in a village in Africa. The people there relied on corn farming for their livelihood. However, the harsh natural conditions often resulted in poor harvests. Droughts were the biggest challenge, while sudden downpours during the rainy season would flood the fields. Despite these difficulties, there was a young boy in the village named Steven who had a deep love for science. He dreamed of using knowledge to change the fate of his community.
From a young age, the boy was fascinated by the wonders of science. He spent his days exploring the world around him, eager to know its mysteries. While other children played in the fields, he could be found conducting "experiments" and thinking about his future under the shade of a tree. He wanted to develop a dam to store rainwater and then pump (用泵抽运) the water from the dam to water the corn when there would be a drought. But to build the dam was a big problem.
His passion for learning was undeniable, but his father, a traditionalist who valued hard work above all else, did not understand or support his son's ambition at first. To him, the only real way to help the family was through manual labor on the farm.
Despite his father's disapproval, Steven remained determined in his pursuit of knowledge. Steven believed that education held the key to a better future, not just for himself but for the entire village. Seeing his son's firm determination, the father changed his mind. The father realized that perhaps there was more to life than working in the fields. With a heavy heart, he emptied his savings to send Steven to school, hoping that one day his son would make his own dream come true.
Years passed, and Steven tirelessly worked on his studies. His efforts paid off when he graduated with top honors from university. Armed with a wealth of knowledge and a burning desire to make a difference, he returned to his village with a mission.
注意:
Upon returning to the village, Steven immediately started to solve the problem.
______________________________________________
______________________________________________
After knowing the project, all the villagers joined in the construction of the dam.

Upon returning to the village, Steven immediately started to solve the problem. He walked along the dried riverbed, measuring the ground and drawing sketches in his notebook. After weeks of calculation, he worked out a plan for a small dam near the upper stream. Then he gathered the villagers together, explained his design in simple words and showed them how the stored rainwater could flow to the corn fields through a narrow channel. At first some of them shook their heads, but his confident smile finally won them over.
After knowing the project, all the villagers joined in the construction of the dam. Men carried stones and mixed cement, while women brought food and water. Steven worked side by side with his father, who now looked at his son with pride. Three months later, the dam was completed. When the first rain filled it up, water ran quietly down to the thirsty fields. That autumn, the village harvested more corn than ever before, and Steven knew that his dream had just begun.

A
Four Hotels That Will Make Your Life Easier
22. What do Marriott Detroit Airport and Radisson LaCrosse have in common?
A. They provide key-free service.
B. They both have the fastest check-in process.
C. Travelers need to check in with a credit card.
D. Travelers can check in with their mobile phones.
23. What's the main purpose of the text?
A. To assess the service of the hotels.
B. To criticize the service of the hotels.
C. To recommend hotels with fast service.
D. To help customers check in and check out.
25. What was Savannah's attitude to her life changes in New York?
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Pessimistic. D. Desperate.
26. Why was Savannah increasingly responsible in her family?
A. For her family moved more frequently.
B. For her mother ended up in divorce.
C. For her English was better than others.
D. For she disagreed with her stepfather.
27. What does Savannah think about her future life?
A. Her future will be loaded with more troubles.
B. It will be difficult to learn to become mature.
C. There will be more good days than expected.
D. Good things will happen if she keeps trying.
29. What will the plan to sell tickets online bring to some people?
A. Another social barrier. B. A cheaper way to travel.
C. More time spent at stations. D. A chance to learn new skills.
30. What can be inferred about the digital transformation?
A. It will meet the demand of consumers.
B. It will cost much less than planned.
C. It will need to be updated constantly.
D. It will result in new social problems.
33. What do experts advise the public to do for manatees?
A. Feed healthy food to them.
B. Set up special rescue groups.
C. Pay more visits to wildlife reserves.
D. Offer financial aid to official organizations.
34. Which of the following can best describe the feeding program?
A. Impractical. B. Significant. C. Complicated. D. Time-consuming.
35. What's the best title for the text?
A. Manatee Saving Program B. Ocean Protecting Program
C. Manatee Feeding Program D. Seagrass Beds Restoring Program

Evidently, at least four essential stages of culture-shock adjustment occur.
The first stage is called "the honeymoon". In this stage, you feel excitement about living in a different place, and everything seems to be marvelous. ____37____
Eventually, however, the second stage of culture shock appears. This is the "hostility stage". ____38____ You become tired of many things about the new culture. Moreover, people don't treat you like a guest anymore. Everything that seemed to be so wonderful at first is now awful, and everything makes you feel distressed and tired.
Then you come to the third stage called "recovery". You start feeling more positive, and you try to develop comprehension of everything you don't understand. The whole situation starts to become more favorable. ____39____
The last stage of culture shock is called "adjustment". ____40____ The things that initially made you feel uncomfortable or strange are now things that you understand. Now you feel comfortable; you have adjusted to the new culture.
A. Actually, culture shock is something you cannot avoid when studying in a foreign country.
B. You have reached a point where you feel good because you have learned enough to understand the new culture.
C. You like everything, and everybody seems to be so nice to you.
D. You recover from the symptoms of the first two stages.
E. In spite of these advantages, however, there are also some challenges you will encounter.
F. However, when you have completely adjusted to a new culture you can more fully enjoy it.
G. You begin to notice that not everything is as good as you had originally thought it was.
