Four days after Hurricane Ida made landfall, the New Orleans meteorologist (气象学家) Margaret Orr took a break after twelve hours on the air to reply to some of her fans on Twitter. Orr, who has been reporting the weather for forty-two years, is regarded by many residents as a prophet (预言家). Someone asked why the sun always shines before a storm: “And I said, to remind us that the sun will shine again. But I don’t want the sun emoji.” She used a heart instead. The real reason the sun shines before a storm? “Because you’ve often got high pressure right over you, and it’s hot,” she said. “The high moves off to the east and pushes the system our way.”
Many of her workmates were sleeping at the station, but Orr preferred to go home, where she had running water but no electricity. She could handle not having air-conditioner. The trick, she said, was to take a cold shower. Not having Internet, though, was a hardship. She said, “I couldn’t check my social media until I got to work, which was annoying.” In the days leading up to Ida, people contacted Orr through Twitter to get individualized, practical advice. Orr tried to respond to everyone. This dedication earned her great respect from the residents.
Orr has always been fascinated by weather. In 1965, when she was twelve years old, the wind from Hurricane Betsy blew the roof off her family’s house in New Orleans. She remembers going outside and standing in the eye of the storm. “I looked up and saw the sky and saw the stars,” she said.
“Bad weather happens everywhere,” she said, “Every now and then, on Twitter, you’ll see people saying, why do you live there? Well, I live here because it’s my home. This is where I grew up. This is the place I love.” She went on, “After Hurricane Katrina, I thought, could I live anywhere else? And I decided, no,I couldn’t.” She added, “As my daughter said about New Orleans when she was a little girl, ‘I even love the dirt.’”
24. Orr’s explanation about sunshine before a storm can be described as _________.
A. poetic but abstract B. scientific but tricky
C. encouraging and professional D. strange and inaccurate
25. Why did Orr find the lack of Internet at home a “hardship”?
A. She couldn’t access weather data for forecasts.
B. She was unable to respond to people’s questions.
C. She needed online resources for air-conditioning.
D. She missed watching news about the hurricane.
26. What childhood experience sparked Orr’s fascination with weather?
A. Watching weather reports on television.
B. Reading books about hurricanes at school.
C. Seeing the stars in the eye of Hurricane Betsy.
D. Helping neighbors rebuild after Hurricane Betsy.
27. What message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Natural disasters are a common threat all over the world.
B. People online don’t understand her deep love for her home.
C. She decided to stay mainly because of her daughter’s opinion.
D. Emotional attachment is what ties people to their hometown.
C
“Individuals of all ages who have empathy understand that sometimes telling little white lies can protect other people from getting hurt,” says Barbara Greenberg, a clinical psychologist in Connecticut. “Most people that I have come across tell these little white lies because they understand that 100 percent honesty all the time is not beneficial.” A white lie, she explains, spares people from unnecessary hurt.
At the same time, Dr. Julia Breur, a marriage and family therapist in Florida, emphasizes the importance of paying attention to the way we respond to someone. The fact is that not telling the truth can result in something unpleasant on you; it’s not just about the person the white lie is being told to. For example, she says someone who always tells others that “all is good” when it comes to a sick parent in an effort to avoid discussions about how serious their health issue really is, can eventually face stressful experiences. When that parent eventually passes away, the person who always gave an “all is good” response ends up emotionally broken.
Sometimes, telling white lies often depends on the situation, Dr. Breur says. For example, consider a woman who has not seen her mother for several months. The daughter has gained noticeable weight, yet the mother responds by excitedly declaring that she looks great. “I emphasize during psychotherapy sessions with my patients that context helps define meaning,” Dr. Breur says. “So when we look at the context of a mother saying you look great when she clearly sees that her daughter has gained weight, it can be acceptable. It reflects the intention of the white lie which is kindness, protection and unconditional love. Otherwise, white lies — especially when told to avoid personal accountability — can start a cycle of mistrust between people, ultimately compromising integrity,” she adds.
Therefore, it’s important to ask ourselves when it is and isn’t appropriate to deliver the honest truth, and when it’s best to step back and offer a more delicate response. More often than not, it’s about finding a balance between the two.
28. What can be learned about white lies according to Barbara Greenberg?
A. They are short-lived. B. They are unidentifiable.
C. They are trouble-making. D. They are common.
29. What message does Dr. Breur deliver in paragraph 2?
A. White lies can harm both the liars and the listeners.
B. We must respond to our family members truthfully.
C. It’s wrong to tell white lies to a seriously ill parent.
D. The “all is good” response is effective in dealing with patients.
30. Which of the following white lies may Dr Breur support?
A. A student claims his homework was left at home.
B. An employee blames traffic jam for being late.
C. A Dad tells his son their lost pet is living happily on a farm
D. A nurse says she has to work overtime so as to decline an invitation.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. East or West, White Lies Are the Best B. Think Twice Before Telling White Lies
C. White Lies Signify Unconditional Love D. Tell White Lies to Show Your Sympathy
D
Researchers from the University of Bath recently developed a new touch screen that’s capable of changing its shape and hardness when users apply various levels of force to it. The screen, which they refer to as “DeformIO”, uses air-powered systems and sensors to detect levels of pressure applied by a finger and then collapse (凹陷) around it. The researchers say it could add a new input layer (输入层) to mobile devices that could be used for a wide variety of tasks, from looking through digital maps to playing games and “feeling” the hardness of products virtually.
Though DeformIO, which is 3mm thick with a 140 mm² surface layer, isn’t the first changeable screen, it can apply several force inputs on various parts of the screen at the same time, which means users can experience a feeling of continuous tactile (触觉的) response while moving their finger across the screen. “In other words, DeformIO allows users to feel a richer, more tactile and natural response as they press the surface,” lead author James Nash said.
If the new screens are ever indeed applied to widespread consumer mobile devices, they could change the way users interface with apps and services used on a daily basis. The researchers imagine a situation where a future traveler equipped with DeformIO uses it to move through sections of the digital map. In this example, the traveler could quickly switch between the road view section of a map and satellite view by simply applying more and less pressure on the screen.
It’s uncertain if everyday phone users will find the new screen attractive enough to give up their glass touch screens. Less advanced mobile designs like foldable screens, which have already existed for years, are still struggling to gain wide use outside of a limited audience. It’s possible that screens like DeformIO could end up the same way. “We hope that in 10 to 20 years” time, the concepts it presents could be in your mobile phone. For now, we’re exploring the applications it might be best suited to.” Nash said.
32. What can be learned about DeformIO?
A. It’s a protective layer for screens. B. It’s a screen with tactile flexibility.
C. It performs different tasks together. D. It senses changes in users’ identity.
33. What makes DeformIO stand out among other similar designs?
A. Its adaptable appearance. B. Its better-quality sensors.
C. Its small size and light weight. D. Its more realistic sense of touch.
34. What does the underlined phrase “interface with” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Mix up. B. Assist with. C. Connect with. D. Improve on.
35. What challenge might DeformIO face?
A. Low customer interest. B. Technical design limitations.
C. Insufficient development funds. D. Strong competition within the industry.
In today’s world where artificial intelligence (AI) can copy our words, automate our decisions and even simulate emotions, understanding what sets us apart isn’t just philosophical. 36 Knowing what makes us unquestionably different from intelligent machines helps us protect and even expand our most valuable strengths — our creativity, emotional intelligence, life experiences and sense of purpose, so that we don’t just coexist with AI, but rise above it, shaping the future instead of being shaped by it. Here are three irreplaceable human attributes (属性).
We have real-life experiences while AI has data. Experience is one of the most powerful things that shape us from the moment on which we’re born. 37 While AI, on the other hand, can analyze massive data, it doesn’t learn from pain, joy, failure, or success the way humans do. Experience isn’t just about information — it’s about personal growth.
38 We create stories to make sense of the world, find purpose in struggle and connect our past to our future. However, AI doesn’t wonder about “the why” behind what it does. Instead, it just processes requests and generates responses, without caring about the outcome beyond the goals that it’s pre-programmed to achieve.
We have free will while AI has codes (代码). Humans can choose generosity over self-interest, forgiveness over hatred, and innovation over conformity. But AI only follows rules. No matter how advanced, it’s always bound by its programming. 39
AI may be extraordinarily useful and helpful but it will likely never provide what makes us human — empathy, true love, meaningful purpose and life experiences. 40 In this way, we can ensure that technology will serve humanity — not the other way around.
A. It’s gaining popularity.
B. Besides, it is deeply practical.
C. We are considerate while AI is creative.
D. We seek meaning while AI follows instructions.
E. It doesn’t have desires, beliefs or independent thoughts.
F. Every failure, success and challenge can influence our future decisions.
G. So value our and others’ emotional depth, life experiences and creative potential.

Fourteen-year-old Nathan ran a small stand selling colorful phone cases at the annual community Summer Carnival (嘉年华). While younger kids crowded around other attractions, he focused on his modest business. His real ambition, however, lay beyond this: he dreamed of owning a 3D printer. With it, he could design and create unique phone cases himself, transforming his small summer job into a proper online business.
One afternoon, a 10-year-old girl named Michele stopped by and bought one phone case for her mom. As they talked, Nathan shared his dream of having a 3D printer. “With that printer, I can print anything in any form,” Nathan said. “Anything in any form?” Michele’s eyes lit up with sudden excitement. “Once you get it, could you please make a leg for my pet duck Tim? Because he was missing one,” Michele said hopefully. “That’s a cool project,” Nathan replied. He thought for a minute. “I’ll make him one, but it won’t be ready now. I have to save up some of the money myself to buy the 3D printer.” “How lucky Tim is! You are so kind!” Michele said happily, unable to contain her excitement.
Before leaving, Michele exchanged phone numbers with Nathan. They discovered that they lived in the same neighborhood, which meant Nathan could easily get close to the duck and measure the size of its leg in person to ensure that a suitable prosthetic (假体的) leg could be made. He promised to reach out as soon as he could afford a printer.
That evening, Nathan told his family about Michele and his promise. His parents praised his kindness and initiative. They agreed to offer some financial support to buy the printer but also emphasized the importance of his own effort. “We’re proud you’re earning this yourself, Nathan,” his father said. “Saving your share shows real commitment.” Nathan nodded firmly, feeling more determined than ever.

24. 根据第一段to remind us that the sun will shine again和Because you’ve often got high pressure right over you, and it’s hot, The high moves off to the east and pushes the system our way.
I couldn’t check my social media until I got to work, which was annoying和people contacted Orr through Twitter to get individualized, practical advice. Orr tried to respond to everyone.
B. She was unable to respond to people’s questions.
26. 根据第三段the wind from Hurricane Betsy blew the roof off her family’s house in New Orleans. She remembers going outside and standing in the eye of the storm. I looked up and saw the sky and saw the stars...
C. Seeing the stars in the eye of Hurricane Betsy.

Most people that I have come across tell these little white lies D. They are common.
The fact is that not telling the truth can result in something unpleasant on you; it’s not just about the person the white lie is being told to. A. White lies can harm both the liars and the listeners.
So when we look at the context of a mother saying you look great when she clearly sees that her daughter has gained weight, it can be acceptable. It reflects the intention of the white lie which is kindness, protection and unconditional love. Otherwise, white lies — especially when told to avoid personal accountability — can start a cycle of mistrust between people, ultimately compromising integrity C. A Dad tells his son their lost pet is living happily on a farm
Therefore, it’s important to ask ourselves when it is and isn’t appropriate to deliver the honest truth, and when it’s best to step back and offer a more delicate response. More often than not, it’s about finding a balance between the two.
32. 根据第一段a new touch screen that’s capable of changing its shape and hardness when users apply various levels of force to it及第二段users can experience a feeling of continuous tactile response...
B. It’s a screen with tactile flexibility.
33. 根据第二段it can apply several force inputs on various parts of the screen at the same time, which means users can experience a feeling of continuous tactile response及allows users to feel a richer, more tactile and natural response...
D. Its more realistic sense of touch.
34. 根据第三段they could change the way users interface with apps and services used on a daily basis及后文例子switch between the road view... by applying more and less pressure...
Connect with.
It’s uncertain if everyday phone users will find the new screen attractive enough to give up their glass touch screens及foldable screens... are still struggling to gain wide use...It’s possible that screens like DeformIO could end up the same way.
Low customer interest.
36. 前文understanding what sets us apart isn’t just philosophical. Knowing what makes us unquestionably different from intelligent machines helps us protect and even expand our most valuable strengths强调这有助于保护和拓展人类的优势,说明该区别具有切实存在的意义。选项B. Besides, it is deeply practical.
We have real-life experiences while AI has data. F. Every failure, success and challenge can influence our future decisions. While AI, on the other hand, can analyze massive data, it doesn’t learn from pain, joy, failure, or success人工智能不会从痛苦、喜悦中学习形成对比,符合段落主旨。
We create stories to make sense of the world, find purpose in struggle and connect our past to our future. AI doesn’t wonder about “the why” behind what it does. it just processes requests and generates responses, ... the goals that it’s pre-programmed to achieve. D. We seek meaning while AI follows instructions.
But AI only follows rules. No matter how advanced, it’s always bound by its programming. E. It doesn’t have desires, beliefs or independent thoughts.
40. 前文总结it will likely never provide what makes us human — empathy, true love, meaningful purpose and life experiences. G. So value our and others’ emotional depth, life experiences and creative potential. Knowing what makes us unquestionably different from intelligent machines helps us protect and even expand our most valuable strengths — our creativity, emotional intelligence, life experiences and sense of purpose, so that we don’t just coexist with AI, but rise above it, shaping the future instead of being shaped by it.

根据because deer ate all the trees可知,她在peach orchard的尝试B. failed失败了,与后文Finally, I had success with peonies呼应。
52. A. Deer(鹿);B. Sheep(羊);C. Animals(动物);D. Enemies(敌人)

54. A. pays forward(提前支付);B. gives back(回报);C. counts on(依靠);D. goes through(经历)牡丹索取少,回报多,gives back so much more than it takes表示回报远多于付出,符合语境。

Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m thrilled to hear that you’re planning a new course for the interest group. I’d like to recommend “Appreciation of Western Drama” as a potential topic.
This course would be highly beneficial for two main reasons. First of all, it offers a fascinating window into western culture and history. What’s more, by reading and acting out scripts, we can dramatically improve our pronunciation and understanding of idiomatic English.
I believe many students, including myself, are eager to explore the world of theater. Thank you for considering my suggestion.
Yours,
Li Hua

Dear Mr. Smith,
Regarding the new interest group course, I am writing to propose “English Debating Skills”.
This topic is highly relevant in an academic environment and would attract many students. I believe this course would be extremely valuable. Not only would it help us structure our arguments logically and think critically, but it would also provide a practical environment to enhance fluency and confidence in speaking. These skills are crucial for our future studies.
We are all looking forward to the possibility of such an engaging and challenging course.
Yours,
Li Hua

Nathan worked very hard for the 3D printer. He continued to sell phone cases at the carnival and even took on some odd jobs around the neighborhood. He saved every penny he earned, carefully keeping track of his progress in a notebook. Weeks passed, and finally, Nathan had saved enough money to buy the 3D printer. He was overjoyed and couldn’t wait to start working on Michele’s project. Moreover, he also shared his excitement with his friends, who were all very supportive of him.
However, creating the leg model was not easy. Nathan faced many challenges along the way. He had to take precise measurements of Tim’s remaining leg and do a lot of research to understand how a prosthetic leg should be designed. He spent countless hours tinkering with the printer, adjusting the settings, and trying different materials. But he refused to give up. Finally, after many tries, he created a leg that fit Tim perfectly. Michele was overjoyed when she saw it, and Nathan felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. His hard work had paid off, and he had not only fulfilled his promise but also gained valuable skills and experience.
