I dreamed of a life beyond the noisy streets of Gazipur, Bangladesh. I longed for international academic fame to create opportunities. Hard work was never my challenge. It was a matter of money. I knew how much my parents had already sacrificed for my education, and I never wanted my dream to become a burden to them. So I determined to make a way on my own.
I’d seen older kids win international Olympiads and receive scholarships to study abroad. Their stories inspired me. I collected my certificates and documents. Applying for every scholarship and Olympiad I could find, I imagined winning an international Olympiad and earning a fully funded opportunity.
I studied until 2:00 am every night, surrounded by silence. Yet, setbacks still held me back. In the Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project, I scored 69, but the qualifying score was 70. Missing by one mark was heartbreaking. I tried other competitions, but failure followed failure. I wondered if the dream was meant for me.
Still, deep inside, the dream remained. I kept telling myself to keep going. When I entered the International Finance Olympiad, I was no longer the same student. Past failures had made me tougher and more committed. Even when exhausted, I forced myself to pick up my pen and solve one more problem.
The wait was agonizing. Then, one evening, I opened the result list with trembling hands. My heart beat fast. I saw my name: Rank 12. Winner. In disbelief, I checked the other lists. I had actually won four Olympiads in four different subjects! It didn’t feel real. In a flash, I recalled every late night. I had no privileges, only perseverance. This victory reminded me that success belongs to those who keep going despite the struggle.
Never let your dreams die. No matter how many setbacks or failures you face, keep working hard, keep learning, and never stop trying. Dreams may take time, but with perseverance, determination, and faith, they can become reality.
4. What obstacle did the author face while pursuing his dream?
A. Lack of natural talent. B. Poor physical condition.
C. Parents’ strong opposition. D. Heavy economic pressure.
5. How did the defeats affect the author?
A. They changed his goal. B. They reduced his efforts.
C. They strengthened his will. D. They made him lose hope.
6. What does the underlined word “agonizing” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Painful. B. Exciting. C. Tolerable. D. Pitiful.
7. What does the author mainly intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Accept failure whenever it comes. B. Stick to our dreams despite hardships.
C. Success requires abandoning past failures. D. Dreams always come true with patience alone.

At a time when endless scrolling (滚屏) and constant notifications dominate daily life, a group of college students at University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) are trying something refreshingly simple: putting their phones away and reconnecting with the real world. Students on campus have started hosting no-phone parties, gatherings where attendees leave their devices behind and focus instead on conversation, creativity, and genuine human connection.
The events are organized by Project Reboot, a student-led movement focused on helping young people build healthier relationships with technology. The group is careful to point out that it is not anti-technology. Instead, its mission is to help students take back control of their attention and use technology with intention rather than let it control them.
“Technology is neither inherently (固有地) good nor bad,” the organization explains. “While it has the power to addict, distract, and depress, it also has the potential to inform, inspire, and empower.” Rather than encouraging people to abandon screens completely, Project Reboot wants students to think more carefully about how technology affects their lives and habits.
According to a survey of UC Berkeley undergraduates, 78% of students said their phone use prevents them from thinking deeply, being creative, or engaging fully with ideas. For many students, the struggle feels deeply personal. “It sucks that on a regular basis, I am having to fight with my phone. I feel like I am losing control over my life,” a student named Dawson Kelly said.
That feeling is one reason why the no-phone gatherings have resonated (引起共鸣) with so many students. Without screens competing for attention, conversations become more meaningful and people feel more present with one another. Through small but intentional habit changes, Project Reboot hopes students can strengthen qualities like mindfulness, discipline, resilience, and creativity while spending less time trapped in endless scrolling.
8. Why do the students have the no-phone parties?
A. To seek for personal achievements.
B. To restore the relation to the real world.
C. To relieve heavy academic pressure.
D. To improve a new way to hold socials.
9. What can the students obtain through Project Reboot?
A. Control over their focus. B. Enough free time.
C. Support from schoolmates. D. Better career plans for the future.
10. How does phone use affect most students in the survey?
A. It makes them physically ill.
B. It causes them to fail exams.
C. It weakens their ability to reflect.
D. It prevents them from sleeping well.
11. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Berkeley’s War Against Phones
B. How to Plan a Student Gathering
C. The Dark Side of Modern Devices
D. Taking Back Control in a Digital World

In some cities, pigeons are unappreciated. They search for thrown particles of food and stare blankly at passersby. It’s led some people to falsely believe that pigeons aren’t very intelligent or worthy of the space they take up.
But it’s time to change our thinking. Humans domesticated (驯化) pigeons thousands of years ago, and part of the reason why they gather around humans is that they’ve lost much of their survival instinct (本能). Beyond even that, they’re highly intelligent creatures that don’t get nearly the credit they deserve.
A study published in 2015 noted that the visual systems used by pigeons have a lot in common with those of humans. The researchers decided to put that visual recognition to the test in a high-risk situation. Pigeons were trained with food reinforcement to recognize the difference between images of malignant and benign (恶性与良性) human tissue samples. Once they were up to speed, they proved to be incredibly accurate at identifying the cancerous images.
What’s especially fascinating is that the researchers were able to demonstrate real learning and pattern recognition by the birds. They were able to generalize their learnings, meaning they weren’t just memorizing the correct answers to the images they trained on. Once trained, they still kept the accuracy when looking at novel images they’d never seen before.
The study found that the average trained pigeon was about 85% effective in identifying cancerous images. However, when pigeons were grouped together four at a time — called “flock sourcing” — their accuracy rose to a staggering 99%.
“The birds’ successes and difficulties suggest that pigeons are well-suited to help us better understand human medical image perception,” the researchers concluded, “and may also prove useful in performance assessment and development of medical imaging hardware, image processing, and image analysis tools.”
12. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 1?
A. To show pigeons’ city behaviors.
B. To explain why pigeons are clever.
C. To introduce a myth about pigeons.
D. To state pigeons have lost their instincts.
13. What does the 2015 study reveal about pigeons’ visuality?
A. They can recognize cancerous tissue samples.
B. They have better eyesight than humans do.
C. They see farther than other bird species.
D. They can identify images faster through food rewards.
14. What does the flock sourcing data suggest about pigeons?
A. Individual pigeons are incapable.
B. Four pigeons are the best work group.
C. Pigeons’ ability remains to be unknown.
D. Collective work improves their performance.
15. What is the researchers’ attitude to using pigeons in medicine?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Indifferent. D. Critical.

____17____ Students should focus on what truly matters and plan ahead, while also making room for activities that bring energy, such as exercising, spending time with friends, or exploring the city. Having a strong support system and knowing when to step back are also highly valued. With so many choices available, it is wise to make careful decisions about which events to attend, concentrating on those that truly interest you.

Organizational tools like calendars and to-do lists can help students manage their time wisely. ____19____ This frees students to focus on what matters just as much to them — building relationships with classmates. True balance, however, is not about filling every minute of the day, but about constantly asking oneself what is truly important at any given moment.
For those with a particularly heavy workload, it is advisable to set aside several hours each week for undisturbed study. More importantly, getting a full eight hours of sleep every night should not be overlooked. ____20____ Quality rest is considered essential for mental health, academic success, and overall well-being.

C. Having a complex schedule helps students make true options.
D. Regarding them, current students have shared their experiences.
E. By using time wisely, they can finish readings and assignments early.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When ten-year-old Alexander Harrington found a worn copy of National Geographic in his grandmother’s attic (阁楼), he stared at the cover for a long time. The photograph showed Earth from space — a blue ball floating in the vast darkness. His mother called him for dinner, but he didn’t move. Finally, he said, “I want to go there.” His grandmother laughed softly and patted his head. “Then go, child,” she said. That simple sentence took root in Alexander’s heart.
In high school, Alexander was an average student who spoke little. The only thing that set him apart was the stack of space books in his desk drawer. His physics teacher, Mr Richardson, noticed this one day and called him after class. “Do you really like this stuff, Alexander?” Mr Richardson asked. “Yes, sir,” Alexander replied. “Then why aren’t you taking my advanced physics class?” Mr Richardson asked again. Alexander hesitated, “I’m afraid I won’t be able to keep up.”
Mr Richardson studied him for a long moment. “Being afraid of falling behind,” he said, “is exactly the reason why you should take it.”
Alexander took the class and later entered a state university to study physics. The first year nearly broke him. When his midterm results came, he ranked near the bottom of the class. That night, he sat alone in the library, a voice inside him whispering that his childhood dream had been nothing more than a fantasy.
But the next morning, he showed up at the lab and asked his professor to explain every mistake. From that day on, he arrived at the library an hour before everyone else and left after the last light was turned off. Four years later, he graduated near the top of his class.
His first job was as a junior system tester at a space company that built satellites. The work was boring — checking endless numbers again and again. He had almost no chance to touch the real design work. Sometimes, driving home late at night, he would pass by the brightly lit research lab — the place he dreamed of, but could not yet enter.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Not complaining about the current work, he learnt advanced courses in his spare time.

D. Taking Back Control in a Digital World
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. D

D. Critical.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. B

【答案】参考范文:
My Views on Ranking the Three Keys to Academic Success
Of the three keys to academic success, I rank them as follows: interest first, method second, and effort third.
Interest is the most important. It turns learning from a duty into a pleasure. When we are truly interested in a subject, we are willing to spend time on it and actively look for better ways to learn. Method comes next. A good method helps us learn more efficiently. With the right approach, we can achieve better results with less wasted effort. Effort, though necessary, comes last. Without interest and proper methods, hard work alone may not lead to success.
In short, interest gives us direction, method improves our efficiency, and effort pushes us forward.

【答案】参考范文:
Not complaining about the current work, he learnt advanced courses in his spare time. He often asked senior workers for advice. He even turned his testing notes into a standard operation manual, which was later used across the company. Two years of quiet effort finally earned him a place in the core research team. Alexander’s first major project was an orbit system for a communication satellite. The project had a strict launch window — miss it, and they would have to wait months. For four months, the team worked nearly eighty hours a week.
However, weeks before launching the communication satellite, a tiny signal error appeared. No one could find the cause. Alexander offered to go through the old records. He spent three nights in a row checking years of documents. Finally, in the early hours of the fourth morning, he found it — a small mistake in the original code. His hands shook as he corrected the data. The numbers on the screen returned to normal. He leaned back in his chair, tired but relieved. Staring at the screen, and thinking of his grandmother, Mr Richardson, and the long nights in the library, he stood up and walked toward the door.
【解析】
