Dear Miss Liu,
I hope this email finds you well.
I am writing to update you on my progress in high school.I have been attending classes for
over a month now,and I am enjoying my high school life.My classmates are so knowledgeable that
they seem to know everything.Despite the pressure,I am motivated to do my best.
I would also like to mention that learning English in high school is different from what I was
used to.There are many new words to remember, and we are required to do speaking and listening
exercises on an app during weekends.Though it seems more challenging,English is still my
favourite subject.
Thank you for your time,Miss Liu.I wish you all the best.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Sultan Kosen, born on December 10th,1982,is a Turkish farmer who became the Guinness
World record for the tallest living male at 246.5 centimeter's in 2009.Kosen's growth was caused by
medical conditions. And because of these,he needs help to walk, let alone help his family with farm
work. Also,Kosen was unable to complete his education because of his height. He described the
advantages of being tall as being able to see a great distance and help his family with tasks such as
changing light bulbs. And he listed disadvantages as not being able to find clothes or shoes that fit as
4
well as fitting into an average sized car.
But these difficulties were solved after he became famous because some companies generously
promised to provide lifelong service for him.In 2013,Kosen married a Syrian woman named Merv
Debo.In an interview,he said that his biggest problem with his wife was communication as he speaks
Turkish,but his wife speaks Arabic.
On Guinness World Records day in 2015,Kosen met for the first time the world's shortest man
Ever Chandra Behoder Donkey, who is 54.6 centimeters tall at an event in London.成都西北中学2026-2027学年度(上)十月检测试题

As a teenager,I fell in love with foreign languages-first French,then Italian,then Hindi,and
Chinese. The learning has often left me highly frustrated, but has also given me great joy at the fact of
having understood some of the beauty of those wonderful, magical tongues.
Why did I learn all those languages?Out of love for different sound systems, different writing systems,
different grammars, different idioms, different ways of seeing the world.I also loved repeatedly listening to
songs from other lands and feeling the culture and history silently lying in the words and tunes.
My earliest-learnt language was French, and then Italian. My French is very good.Although my Italian
is not as good,it gives me a huge burst of pride whenever I'm taken for a native speaker.
Chinese is another kettle of fish.I've struggled with it for many years, yet I'm almost always lost in a
group of native speakers..It's discouraging, but I still want to try to climb the Everest(珠穆朗玛峰)of the
Chinese language on my own.I don't want a helicopter (ride to the summit.Learning another
language is one of the deepest and most human things one can possibly do.Language is at the core of who we
are.Language makes us who we are.
Today,AI can impressively help anyone to write and read in almost any language. But this is a
surface-level exchange of ideas, which comes at a steep price:the loss of honest engagement with the
magic organ that makes us human. The challenges of learning a new language are exactly why it is still so
important to do so in the AI era.
Chinese is difficult for me,but I will never allow AI to borrow my voice to express my thoughts aloud in
a perfect Chinese accent.
24.What do we know about the author's learning of foreign languages?
A.It is always a pleasant experience.
B.It is easiest for her to learn Hindi.
C.She started learning them at the age of 8.
D.She really loves them and their cultures.
25.Why does the author compare Chinese to "Everest"?
A.To show it is full of natural beauty.
B.To suggest it is extremely challenging.
C.To show it is the most important language.
D.To prove it is popular among language learners.
26.Why is learning a new language still important in the al era?
A.Because al cannot translate languages clearly enough.
B.Because it allows us to avoid the challenges of modern life.
C.Because the process itself keeps us truly engaged as humans.
D.Because it helps us get better grades in school examinations.
27.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To recommend AI tools for language study.
B.To share personal views on learning languages.
C.To compare the difficulties of French,Italian and Chinese.
D.To prove that Chinese is the hardest language in the world.

Scientists in South Africa have found that ceramic (nest (boxes can protect endangered
African penguins from climate change.
In the past, the penguins laid eggs in holes dug into centuries-old layers of their own droppings, most of
which were shipped by traders to the United Kingdom as fertilizer (in the 1800s.Since then, many
penguins have nested in the open, exposing their eggs and themselves to the burning heat.
Because penguins developed to keep heat in cold water, they can easily overheat on land.Typically,
penguins leave their nests regularly to cool off in the sea.But without suitable holes, this leaves their eggs
unprotected.Since 1900,the African penguin population has dropped from three million to only 48,000.
Fortunately,a team of researchers seem to have found a way.Over the past years, the team has put
more than 1,500 handmade ceramic nest boxes in five areas where the penguins live, including Bird Island in
Algoa Bay,South Africa, which is home to nearly half of the world's remaining African penguins.
Looking like small round houses, the double-walled ceramic nests can keep African penguins
comfortable."The nests are so useful,"says Welman,a zoologist,"Even if adults had to leave nests for some
reason, their eggs would never be at any risk of overheating."Christina Hagen of Bird Life South Africa,
who was not part of the study, says finding effective conservation solutions is important given the decreasing
population of African penguins.
The main threat (to African penguins is over-hunting of anchovy and sardines, the penguins'
favorite food.Scientists and conservationists are pushing the South African government to close commercial
fishing around the five African penguin breeding (areas until populations recover. But without
protection from rising temperatures, those efforts alone may not be enough.Ceramic nests could help to give
these beloved penguins a fighting chance.
28.What can we learn about African penguins from the passage?
A.They adapt well to high temperatures.
B.They are mainly threatened by pollution.
C.They are suffering a lot from overheating.
D.They have a population of three million.
29.Why is Bird Island important to African penguins?
A.It has a great many holes to lay eggs.
B.It features the best climate.
C.It shelters a large penguin population.
D.It holds more handmade nests.
30.What is the main function of the ceramic nest boxes?
A.To keep a cool environment for penguin eggs.
B.To provide a safe resting place for adult penguins.
C.To protect penguins and their eggs from natural enemies.
D.To provide man-made droppings for penguins to dig holes in.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Ceramic nest boxes alone can save the african penguins from extinction.
B.Protecting penguins'food sources is as important as protecting their nests.
C.The authorities have closed fishing for penguin population recovery.
D.Rising temperatures are the biggest threat to African penguins at present.

Quick:what's your best friend's phone number?Don't feel bad if you couldn't answer off the top of
your head. You have no reason to commit phone numbers to memory:it's just there in your phone.Or
perhaps you once had a phone book to store them.In either case,an object does the remembering for you.
“Prosthetic memory”(人工记t忆)is nothing new.Writing itself has been a means of storing information.
Yet the information revolution has generated more data than ever before. We are flooded with information.
We're creating more of it,and keeping more of it.The storage capacity of the human brain has since been
eclipsed. No wonder, then, that we're increasingly dependent on memory prostheses(),from libraries to
smartphones.
Not everyone thinks this trend in external memory is good.Historically, memory prostheses were
expensive. As technologies such as printing and photography become more affordable, sharing experiences
with others is easier than ever.So every breakfast, every sunset, every encounter with a cat finds its way onto
social media. And here comes the worry. When we devote ourselves to capturing and sharing the world in
this way, something immensely valuable is lost;when recording so much of our lives,we're forgetting to
actually live them, and so disconnect ourselves from experience.
But is our social media-driven transformation wholly bad?If we're still creating and sharing memories
like this, perhaps this is because we've not had sufficient time to learn how to do these things without
thinking about what we're doing. It is easy to ignore that the mass social media era is less than a decade old.
That's just a short blink (in human history, yet it has totally changed how we live.I suspect
we're not far off from being directly faced with experience yet with the ability to share experience in ways
less bounded by geography and time. After all, technology can protect all the moments of a life that would
otherwise be lost.
32.What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?
A.Technology weakens our brains.
B.We are burdened with phone numbers.
C.We rely more on tools to memorize.
D.Technology distances us from our friends.
33.What does the underlined word "eclipsed"in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Improved.
B.Undervalued.
C.Restricted.
D.Outperformed.
34.What negative effect does online sharing bring about?
A.An overflow of posts.
B.High cost of digital devices.
C.Addiction to the virtual world.
D.Disregard for authentic experience.
35.What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A.Have faith in human brains.
B.Take time to adapt to digital age.
C.Quicken the pace of development.
D.Make efforts to enhance memory.

How to Remember What You Read
Reading is important. But the next step is making sure that you remember what you've read!36
You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images()may fly right out of your head.
Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read.
●37
If the plot, characters,or word usage is confusing for you,you likely won't be able to remember what
you read.It's a bit like reading a foreign language.If you don't understand what you're reading,how
would you remember it?But there are a few things you can do,like using a dictionary and looking up the
difficult wor ds.
●Are you connected?
Does a character remind you of a friend?Does the setting make you want to visit the place?Does the
book inspire you,and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right
away.38 How willing are you to make the connections happen?
Read it;hear it;be it!
Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And,put some character into the words. When he was
writing his novels,Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He'd make faces in the
mirror, and change his voice for each character.39
●How often do you read?
If you read frequently, you'll likely have an easier time with remembering what you're reading and
what you've read.40 As you make reading a regular part of your life, you'll make more connections,
stay more focused and understand the text better. You'll learn to enjoy literature,as you remember what
you read!
A.Are you confused?
B.Practice makes perfect.
C.What's your motivation?
D.Memory is sometimes not dependable.
E.Marking helps you remember what you read.
F.But other books require a bit more work on your part.
G.You can do the same thing when you are reading the text!
