The day I walked into Westbrook High,it seemed like every pair of eyes in the hallway somehow knew I was
the new kid.Starting a new school mid year was like hitting reset on my life.At lunch that first day.I sat at the
comer table pretending (to be very interested in my phone while secretly searching"...how to survive being
the new kid."
Teen mental health articles kept saying the same thing-feeling nervous during a school move is
normal.That helped a linle,but honestly.I was still uneasy.
The first week was difficult.I got lost looking for chemistry class, mispronounced a teacher's name, and
walked into the wrong classroom twice. But something small changed when a guy named Luca asked if I wanted
to join his group during science lab.It was not a dramatic movie moment, just e simple"Hey.you can sit here if
you want."That one sentence made the whole day easier.
One trick that helped me adjust (to a new school was setting sinall goals.Instead of trying to make five
best friends right away,I focused on simple things.Leam two classmates'names.Join one club.Ask one question
in class. Those small wins slowly made me confident. My dad also gave surprisingly good advice. He said being
new can actually be an advantage because nobody has a fixed idea about you yet.You get to decide who you want
to be.That thought stuck with me during the first few months.
By spring.things looked very different.I joined the photography club and started hanging out with Luca.
Moving schools mid year was not easy, but it taught me something important about resilience ()Feeling
uncomfortable does not last forever. If you are the new kid right now, hang in there. The hallway that feels strange
today might become the place where your next chapter (begins.

Recently,I saw several moms on the Intemet criticizing (parents who drive their kids to school.will
spoil (her."on mom said."She needs to be independent and catch the bus."Many parents agree. After all,
there are plenty of school buses filled with students in our small city.
But unlike those other parents,I choose to drive my daughter, and have been doing so since she started
primary school.I wake up carly to drive her,and every aftemoon,I wait in the car line to pick her up.
I want to treasure this time with her while I can. These drives have become a special chance for us to
connect. It's a rare (time when neither of us is doing anything else, and she is there just to listen to me.
On the 10-minute drive to our local high school,I point out the first pink light of sunrise to my
less-than-enthusiastic (daughter."Look at it!It's so pretty."I say.If I'm lucky.she'll enjoy it with
me,but most days she is a typical ninth grader-quiet,busy with her own thoughts, and giving one-word
answers.
To draw her out,I get creative with a new tradition. We soften Mondays and celebrate Fridays with an
after-school stop at Starbucks for a mango drink or Dunkin'for a strawberry treat.I ask questions in fun ways that
let her share more.Sometimes I hear about a funny class moment,a problem in math,or a story from the gym.
These drives are little moments of peace in her turbulent teenage life.
We have our fights, and she might not enjoy these rides now as much as I do.But maybe one day she will
remember them sweetly.Meanwhile,I'll keep driving my daughter and make these days meaningful for both of
uS.

We like to think we can tell exactly how our dogs are feeling, but a new study suggests many of us are
getting it very wrong.
Researchers at Arizona State University (ASU)found that when people are in a good mood ()they're
more likely to think a dog looks sad. When people feel a bit down, however, they usually view the same dog as
being happy. This is the opposite of how we read each other. When we communicate with other people,we usually
believe their emotions are similar to our own.
"In this area of how people understand dogs'emotions,I'm continuously surprised,"said Prof.Clive Wynne,
an author of the study."We're just scratching the surface of something we now know little about,"
The findings come from two experiments which include around 300 college students.Volunteers were first
shown pictures designed to push them into positive, negative or neutral (moods. They were then asked to
watch videos of dogs and decide how the animals were feeling.Students who had been shown the happier"

pictures thought the dogs looked sad.and those who saw"sadder"pictures thought the dogs looked happy.
The videos showed three dogs in situations meant to make them feel happy, uneasy or neutral.Treats, toys
and promises of visiting"Grandma°were used to lift their mood..Vacuum cleaners(真空吸尘器)and photos of
cats were used to lower it.
The researchers say the findings could change how we care for our pets."If we can better understand how we
see animal emotions.we can better care for them,"said the study's another author Dr.Holly Molinaro.
As for why humans see dogs'emotions the wrong way, scientists don't know yet."People and dogs have been
living with each other for at least 14.000 years,"said Wynne."In that time, dogs have leamned plenty of things
about how to get along with human beings. And yet our research suggests that more effort is necded to understand
what dogs are feciing."

A.People can easily tell their dogs'emotions.
B.People's emotions are always similar to dogs'.
C.People are good at reading dogs'body language.

Change can feel strange, even when it is supposed.to be exciting.A new school, new friends,a different class
schedule,or even changes at bome can make anyone feel a little shaky. If you have butterflies in your stomach
before the first day somewhere new,you are not alone.Experts often say anxiety (about change is normal
because our brains like familiarity.36What if I do not fit in?What if people judge me?
The truth is most teens around you are thinking the same thing, even if they look confident on the outside.
37It just means you care about where you are going.
One powerful skill is something called self talk.38Sometimes that voice can be unkind. When you
catch yourself thinking."I am going to mess this up,"stop and try thinking differently.Tell yourself something
more balanced, like,"This is new,but I will figure it out."That tiny change can calm the stress response (in
your brain.Building resilience starts with these small mental habits.
Another helpful skill is flexibility )39Maybe the friend you expected to click with tums
out to be different,or the class you were looking forward to feels harder than expected. That does not mean the
whole experience is a failure.Flexible thinking helps you make changes and keep moving forward.
Finally, every teen needs an anchor.Anchors are the small things that make you feel safe wben life feels out
of control. It might be texting a close friend after school, listening to music during a walk.joumaling your
thoughts,or talking honestly with a parent who actually listens.
40
A.Both are normal parts of growing up.
B.It is basically the voice in your bead.
C.Feeling nervous does not mean you are weak.
D.Resilience is not about acting like change is easy.
E.Life does not always go exactly how we imagine it.
