B
Clyde W. Tombaugh was once a farm boy from Kansas, but he became the man forever linked to Pluto (冥王星). In 1930, while working at the Lowell Observatory in Arizona, he spotted a faint moving dot in the sky. That tiny speck was Pluto. It wasn’t a dramatic flash of light, but the result of slow, patient work by a young man who knew the heavens well.
After his great discovery, life went on. Tombaugh didn’t stay in the spotlight. Instead, he settled in Las Cruces, New Mexico. From 1955 until his retirement in 1973, he taught astronomy at New Mexico State University. He was not just a famous astronomer; he was a husband, a father, and a teacher who helped students look up at the stars with wonder. He was known as a down-to-earth person with a great sense of humor.
Tombaugh passed away in 1997. However, his story didn’t end there. Space stories often take the long route. On January 19, 2006, NASA launched the New Horizons spacecraft toward Pluto. Tucked inside was a small container holding some of Tombaugh’s ashes. He was finally going back to the world he had discovered.
The inscription (碑文) on the spacecraft was special. It didn’t just list his professional titles. It called him “Adelle and Muron’s boy, Patricia’s husband, Annette and Alden’s father.” Then, with a touch of humor that his family loved, it added: “punster and friend.” This detail turned a cold scientific mission into something warm and personal, like a note slipped into a lunch bag.
On July 14, 2015, after traveling more than 3 billion miles, New Horizons finally flew past Pluto. For the scientists, it was a successful mission. But for Tombaugh’s family, it was a sweet celebration. They watched as a part of their loved one completed the longest odyssey.
Clyde Tombaugh spent his life helping others understand the night sky. In the end, a piece of him traveled outward too, returning to the little world that carried his name into history. What began as a boy’s wonder under the Kansas sky had never really left him, even when the circle is 3 billion miles wide.
24.What can we learn about Tombaugh’s discovery of Pluto?
A.It was made almost during a sudden flash.
B.It was far from a single lucky moment.
C.It was the work of a team of scientists.
D.It was the result of a single observation.
25.What kind of person do you think of Tombaugh as?
A.A talented scientist who lived a lonely life.
B.A gifted man who stayed warm and modest.
C.A humorous teacher who demanded a lot.
D.A proud discoverer who valued his fame.
26.What does the underlined word “odyssey” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.route B.wait C.delay D.journey
27.What message does the text mainly convey?
A.Hard work always pays off in the end.
B.Family support is the key to success.
C.A lifelong passion can come full circle.
D.Science needs both patience and luck.
根据第一段“It wasn’t a dramatic flash of light, but the result of slow, patient work by a young man who knew the heavens well.(这并非一道耀眼的闪光,而是一位熟知星空的年轻人长期耐心工作的成果)”可知,汤博发现冥王星并非偶然的幸运瞬间,而是长期潜心研究的结果。
根据第二段“Tombaugh didn’t stay in the spotlight. Instead, he settled in Las Cruces, New Mexico. From 1955 until his retirement in 1973, he taught astronomy at New Mexico State University. He was not just a famous astronomer; he was a husband, a father, and a teacher who helped students look up at the stars with wonder. He was known as a down-to-earth person with a great sense of humor.(汤博并没有一直处于聚光灯下。
根据第五段“On July 14, 2015, after traveling more than 3 billion miles, New Horizons finally flew past Pluto...They watched as a part of their loved one completed the longest odyssey.(2015年7月14日,在航行超过30亿英里后,新视野号最终飞掠冥王星……

At one time, the American Chestnut (栗子) was among the most common and largest trees in the eastern United States. The wood was used to cover the walls of homes and schools. The leaves helped add nutrients to the soil. And men on street corners sold chestnuts cooked on open fire.
However, in the late 19th century, some East Asian varieties of chestnut trees brought to the U. S. carried a fungus (真菌) that killed almost all American chestnuts.
The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) is a non-profit organization based in the eastern state of North Carolina. It has been working with researchers for over 30 years to bring the trees back to eastern U. S. forests.
American chestnuts now exist mostly as huge root systems that grow into small trees. The fungus harms them when the small trees start to develop fully. East Asian varieties, like those that brought the fungus in the first place, are resistant to the fungus.
Researchers have tried to save American chestnuts by cross-breeding them with one kind of Chinese chestnut that can fight off the fungus. Progress has been slow, however. The trees the researchers have grown could not resist the fungus well enough to become large and healthy trees.
That is why scientists are now trying to combine two methods: cross-breeding and genetically changing the genes of American chestnut trees. They hope this will improve the tree’s ability to resist attack from the fungus.
A changing climate and warmer temperatures may also make restoring the chestnut difficult in some areas. A team at Virginia Tech University published a study this summer about this issue. They looked at projected future climates and then measured the shortest distance the trees would have to move to survive well in a new climate.
For now, researchers know their work might not be successful in their lifetimes. The process has been slow.
28.What made the American Chestnut endangered?
A.Wild forest fires. B.Forest destruction.
C.Trees with a fungus. D.Warmer temperatures.
29.What goal does TACF work for?
A.To rescue an endangered plant. B.To develop a new variety of fruit.
C.To promote traditional plants. D.To introduce chestnuts to schools.
30.What’s wrong with the existing American chestnut trees?
A.They no longer bear fruit. B.They fail to grow into full-sized trees.
C.Their root systems are too huge. D.Their habitat is occupied by other trees.
31.What do we know about the research of TACF?
A.It may be against the laws of nature. B.It may be a waste of effort in the end.
C.It will prove that man can win nature. D.It has yet to make a major breakthrough.
【答案】28.C 29.A 30.B 31.D
根据第二段“However, in the late 19th century, some East Asian varieties of chestnut trees brought to the U. S. carried a fungus (真菌) that killed almost all American chestnuts.(然而,19世纪末,一些被引进美国的东亚栗树品种携带了一种真菌,几乎导致了所有美国栗树的死亡)”可知,带有真菌的树木让美国栗树濒临灭绝。
根据第三段“The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) is a non-profit organization based in the eastern state of North Carolina. It has been working with researchers for over 30 years to bring the trees back to eastern U. S. forests.(美国栗树基金会(TACF)是一家位于美国东部的北卡罗来纳州的非营利组织。三十多年来,该组织一直与研究人员合作,致力于将栗树重新引入美国东部的森林中)”可知,TACF致力于拯救一种濒临灭绝的植物。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段“American chestnuts now exist mostly as huge root systems that grow into small trees. The fungus harms them when the small trees start to develop fully. East Asian varieties, like those that brought the fungus in the first place, are resistant to the fungus.(如今,美国栗子主要以巨大的根系形式存在,这些根系会逐渐长成小树。当小树开始完全发育时,真菌就会对其造成危害。而东亚品种(如最初引入该真菌的那些)则对真菌具有抗性)”可知,美国栗子树不能长成大树。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“For now, researchers know their work might not be successful in their lifetimes. The process has been slow.(目前,研究人员知道他们的工作可能无法在有生之年取得成功。这一过程进展缓慢)”可知,研究至今尚未取得重大突破。
D
Psychologically, the halo effect refers to the tendency for people to let one positive trait or overall impression of a person influence their perceptions of that person’s other characteristics. First described by psychologist Edward Thorndike in the early twentieth century, the halo effect demonstrates how initial judgments, such as physical attractiveness or confidence, can affect how we evaluate unrelated qualities like intelligence, trustworthiness, or competence. This cognitive bias (认知偏差) is not limited to personal interactions; it also shapes how we perceive celebrities, politicians, teachers, and even products or brands.
The mechanism behind the halo effect is rooted in human cognition, as individuals often rely on mental shortcuts, or heuristics (启发式), to make quick decisions about people and situations. When we notice something positive about a person—such as a friendly smile or a neat appearance—we are more likely to assume that they possess additional desirable traits, sometimes without sufficient evidence. This process can lead to errors in judgment, as our overall impression may overshadow objective evaluation of specific skills or behaviors.
The halo effect has significant implications in various areas of life, including education, the workplace, and the judicial system For example, teachers may unconsciously grade students more favorably if they appear enthusiastic or well-behaved, regardless of their actual academic performance. In hiring or promotion decisions, employers might overlook a candidate’s weaknesses if their first impression is particularly strong. Even in courtrooms, research has shown that physically attractive defendants are sometimes treated more kindly than others accused of similar offenses.
Understanding the halo effect is important because it highlights the need for critical thinking and objective assessment in our daily lives. By being aware of this bias, individuals can make more balanced and fair decisions, whether judging others’ abilities, evaluating products, or interpreting media representations. In conclusion, the halo effect serves as a reminder that human perceptions are not always reliable, and that striving for objectivity can help minimize the influence of first impressions on our judgments.
32.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By quoting an expert. B.By defining a concept.
C.By giving examples. D.By providing statistics.
33.What does paragraph 2 focus on?
A.The influence of first impressions. B.The advantage of human cognition.
C.The underlying logic of the effect. D.The evaluating role of evidence.
34.What does the author think of the halo effect in our daily lives?
A.Short-sighted. B.Effective. C.Reliable. D.One-sided.
35.Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A.The halo effect: a cognitive shortcut that simplifies judgments
B.The halo effect: why attractive people enjoy unfair advantages
C.The halo effect: a psychological bias needing urgent corrections
D.The halo effect: how first impressions dominate our perceptions
根据第一段“Psychologically, the halo effect refers to the tendency for people to let one positive trait or overall impression of a person influence their perceptions of that person’s other characteristics. (从心理学角度讲,晕轮效应指的是人们倾向于让对一个人的某一积极特质或整体印象影响对其其他特征的认知。)”可知,作者开篇通过给晕轮效应下定义来引入话题。
33.主旨大意题。根据第二段“The mechanism behind the halo effect is rooted in human cognition, as individuals often rely on mental shortcuts, or heuristics, to make quick decisions about people and situations. (晕轮效应背后的机制源于人类认知,因为人们常常依赖心理捷径,即启发式,来对人和情境快速做出判断。)”可知,该段重点阐述晕轮效应背后的内在逻辑。
34.推理判断题。根据第三段“For example, teachers may unconsciously grade students more favorably if they appear enthusiastic or well-behaved, regardless of their actual academic performance. In hiring or promotion decisions, employers might overlook a candidate’s weaknesses if their first impression is particularly strong. Even in courtrooms, research has shown that physically attractive defendants are sometimes treated more kindly than others accused of similar offenses.
所以D选项“The halo effect: how first impressions dominate our perceptions (晕轮效应:第一印象如何主导我们的认知)”为最佳标题。
Why does being alone make you stronger?
You may not be convinced that solitude (独处) is good for you. If you’re a people person, you may not look forward to spending time by yourself. 36 Here are several benefits to consider.
Solitude can make you more sympathetic. When you’re with your specific group of friends and family members, you become separated from others. It’s not mean-spirited necessarily, but you tend to exclude people who aren’t within your “circle”. 37 You develop sympathy for other people, and you can even be willing to include them in your life. It’s like your world gets bigger from your time spent by yourself.
Spending time alone improves your creativity. There is a long list of musicians, authors, and artists who look to solitude to inspire their creativity. When you are alone in your living room, there are no distractions, so your mind can rest, allowing ideas to bubble to the top of your consciousness. 38 Some people even suggest that an open floor plan in your home isn’t helpful for creativity because it’s noisier and less private.
You can release pressure when you stay alone. Learning how to hang out with yourself reduces your stress. Let’s face it. 39 Solitude allows you to take a breath and enjoy some peace. You can take a walk, read a book or clean out a closet. Whatever you want to do that helps your mind and body de-stress.
40 Hanging with family and friends is great, but sometimes you need to be alone to map out your life. You may need time to figure out where you want to go on vacation next summer. You may need time to think about your retirement. Solitude allows you some time to evaluate your goals, dreams, and aspirations and make changes if necessary.
A.Being alone facilitates your planning.
B.Solitude gives you a sense of contentment.
C.You feel fulfilled by being surrounded by friends.
D.Interacting with others brings you mental burdens.

I was eleven when my mother first took me to a small chess club at the corner of our street. I remember standing at the door, unwilling to step in, while my mother gently placed her hand on my shoulder and pushed me forward.
The chess pieces were not exciting as I had hoped; instead, they sat there, silent and demanding. I spent long afternoons memorizing openings, losing games, and staring at the board, unsure of what I had done wrong. Some days, I dragged my feet on the way to class, wondering why I had to keep going.
“Why do you insist on this?” I finally asked one evening, frustration spilling out of me. My mother looked up from the book she was reading. A small smile rested on her face, the kind that never rushed to explain itself. She didn’t answer directly. Instead, she said quietly, “Playing chess determines who I am.” I wondered what a journey she had taken.
She was not a person of many words, but there was something in the way she lived that made people listen when she did speak. She never hurried, even when time pressed. When problems came, she did not complain; she would sit with them, as if turning them over carefully, like pieces on a board. And when she made a decision, it carried a quiet certainty that rarely needed defending. I could not fully understand her sentence, but I could see its shadow in her life.
Nearly a year later, I was signed up for my first competition. On the morning of the event, as she helped me straighten my collar, she said, “Remember, participation is competition, but more than competition.”
I nodded, though the words felt distant, like something I was supposed to understand someday, but not yet.
The competition hall was larger than I expected. Rows of tables stretched out under bright lights, each one holding a board that seemed suddenly more serious than the ones I had practiced on. When the game began, my hands could not move. I made moves too quickly, then hesitated, then tried to correct myself. My opponent remained calm, almost indifferent.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

I lost the game. I dragged myself out of the competition hall, my cheeks burning with embarrassment and my eyes blurred by tears. All the long afternoons spent memorizing openings, practicing moves, and correcting mistakes felt useless. I walked slowly, kicking at the stones on the road, and even thought about quitting chess for good — I couldn’t bear the disappointment of failing after so much effort, nor could I face the thought of letting my mother down.
That evening, my mother came into my room without asking the result. She sat quietly beside me, gently patting my back, and handed me a cup of warm milk. She said softly that losing was not a failure, but a chance to learn — to calm down, think carefully about my mistakes, and grow stronger. Her words slowly lifted my spirits. I finally understood her earlier words: chess is about perseverance, not just winning. I wiped my tears and decided to keep practicing, determined to do better next time.

IT happened kind of by accident, actually. really how so well my . old neighbor was moving away. And SHE couldn't take all her potted plants with her. So he asked if I wanted them. That was nice of her. Yeah, I wasn't really interested at first. Back then, I was only ten. All I wanted was a small animal, a little fox, or maybe a dog. Even a rabbit would have been exciting. Plants must have seen pretty boring then they did. But once I started taking care of them, I really grew to like IT. It's very calm. Some of these look pretty unusual, like these over here. Oh, those are desert plants. They're harder to keep, but I think they're worth IT. Do you buy them locally sometimes?

E.Solitude allows you to feel part of the human race.
F.But you may be surprised at the gains from solitude.
G.This boost in original thinking and productivity is widespread.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I lost the game.

At one time, the American Chestnut (was among the most common and largest trees in the eastern
United States. The wood was used to cover the walls of homes and schools. The leaves helped add nutrients to the
soil. And men on street corners sold chestnuts cooked on open fire.
However,in the late 19th century, some East Asian varieties of chestnut trees brought to the U.S.carried a
fungus (that killed almost all American chestnuts.
The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF)is a non-profit organization based in the eastern state of North
Carolina. It has been working with researchers for over 30 years to bring the trees back to eastern U.S.forests.
American chestnuts now exist mostly as huge root systems that grow into small trees. The fungus harms
them when the small trees start to develop fully.East Asian varieties, like those that brought the fungus in the first
place,are resistant to the fungus.
Researchers have tried to save American chestnuts by cross-breeding them with one kind of Chinese
chestnut that can fight off the fungus.Progress has been slow, however. The trees the researchers have grown
could not resist the fungus well enough to become large and healthy trees.
That is why scientists are now trying to combine two methods:cross-breeding and genetically changing the
genes of American chestnut trees. They hope this will improve the tree's ability to resist attack from the fungus.
A changing climate and warmer temperatures may also make restoring the chestnut difficult in some areas.
A team at Virginia Tech University published a study this summer about this issue. They looked at projected future

Psychologically, the halo effect refers to the tendency for people to let one positive trait or overall
impression of a person influence their perceptions of that person's other characteristics.First described by
psychologist Edward Thorndike in the early twentieth century, the halo effect demonstrates how initial judgments,
such as physical attractiveness or confidence, can affect how we evaluate unrelated qualities like intelligence,
trustworthiness,or competence. This cognitive bias (is not limited to personal interactions;it also
shapes how we perceive celebrities, politicians, teachers, and even products or brands.
The mechanism behind the halo effect is rooted in human cognition,as individuals often rely on mental
shortcuts,or heuristics ()to make quick decisions about people and situations. When we notice something
positive about a person-such as a friendly smile or a neat appearance-we are more likely to assume that they
possess additional desirable traits, sometimes without sufficient evidence. This process can lead to errors in
judgment,as our overall impression may overshadow objective evaluation of specific skills or behaviors.
The halo effect has significant implications in various areas of life, including education, the workplace, and
the judicial system ()For example, teachers may unconsciously grade students more favorably if they
appear enthusiastic or well-behaved,regardless of their actual academic performance. In hiring or promotion
decisions, employers might overlook a candidate's weaknesses if their first impression is particularly strong.Even

in courtrooms, research has shown that physically attractive defendants are sometimes treated more kindly than

others accused of similar offenses.
Understanding the halo effect is important because it highlights the need for critical thinking and objective
assessment in our daily lives.By being aware of this bias, individuals can make more balanced and fair decisions,
whether judging others'abilities,evaluating products,or interpreting media representations.In conclusion,the

I was eleven when my mother first took me to a small chess club at the corner of our street.I remember
standing at the door, unwilling to step in,while my mother gently placed her hand on my shoulder and pushed me
forward.
The chess pieces were not exciting as I had hoped;instead, they sat there, silent and demanding.I spent

Some days,I dragged my feet on the way to class, wondering why I had to keep going.

"Why do you insist on this?"I finally asked one evening, frustration spilling out of me.My mother looked
up from the book she was reading.A small smile rested on her face, the kind that never rushed to explain itself.
She didn't answer directly.Instead,she said quietly,"Playing chess determines who I am."I wondered what a
journey she had taken.
She was not a person of many words, but there was something in the way she lived that made people listen
when she did speak. She never hurried, even when time pressed. When problems came, she did not complain;she

E.Solitude allows you to feel part of the human race.
F.But you may be surprised at the gains from solitude.
G.This boost in original thinking and productivity is widespread.

Eco-tourism, a Green Travel Choice
Nowadays, eco-tourism is increasingly popular among travelers as a new green travel style. It is of great significance, for it not only enables us to get close to nature and appreciate its beauty, but also helps protect the ecosystem and promote sustainable tourism development.
To be a responsible eco-traveler, we should choose low-carbon transport like walking or cycling. Meanwhile, we must protect wildlife and landscapes, never littering or picking plants. Besides, we should behave politely and follow tourist rules.
Let’s take eco-tourism as our first choice. Small actions can make a big difference. Together, we enjoy trips while protecting our beloved planet.
