He has sold over 97 million copies worldwide, with over 65 million of them within the United States alone. He lives with his family in North Carolina. He is also considered to be very generous with his money. In 2011, he created the Nicholas Sparks Foundation to make more opportunities available to children from poor families. His foundation, which he started with his wife, creates scholarships for children from low-income families in rural communities. Sparks has had a very successful career, and he owes that to education. “The education I received prepared me for the world I would be facing in the future,” he said. Even though he is worth an estimated 75 million dollars or so, Sparks seems to live the values he presents in his books.

What a day! I started at my new school this morning and had the best time. I made lots of new friends and really liked my teachers. I was nervous the night before, but I had no reason to be. Everyone was so friendly and polite. They made me feel at ease. It was like I’d been at the school for a hundred years!
The day started very early at 7:00 a.m.. I had my breakfast downstairs with my mom. She could tell that I was very nervous. Mom kept asking me what was wrong. Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources.
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who’d done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test fear and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
28. What do the students start worrying about before an exam according to Paragraph 1?
A. What other students do during the test.
B. Whether they can pass the exam.
C. Whether they have remembered the materials.
D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
29. What is the solution developed by researchers?
A. Making the students focused on the test.
B. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
C. Having the students write about their worries about the test.
D. Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test.
30. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test ______.
A. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
B. became less nervous before the test
C. were better at controlling their feelings
D. did better than those who wrote about their feelings
31. What’s the writer’s attitude to the solution developed by researchers?
A. Opposed. B. Worried.
C. Doubtful. D. Unknown.
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. A 31. D

Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork — everything from taking tests to researching a paper. But unfortunately, most schools don’t have classes that teach you how to take notes. So here are some tips.
Write down key facts. If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that’s good. You can copy them down. If not, write down the most important points from class. Does your history teacher mention the date of a key Civil War battle? Does your English teacher give examples of Shakespeare’s use of irony (讽刺)? Write them down.
Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may mention lots of dates and facts in class but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat a certain date or a piece of information. After a while, you’ll get to know a teacher’s style.
Don’t overdo it. Don’t go crazy taking notes. You’ll be frantic (慌乱的) if you try to write down every word that’s said in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you might miss important points. Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class.
Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to repeat something you miss. If the teacher is going too fast, your classmates will also be happy to hear the information again. If you don’t want to ask in class, see your teacher afterwards. It’s much easier than wondering if you got the notes right as you study.
Compare. Keep your notes handy when you’re doing your reading homework. Compare what you wrote with what the reading says — you may even want to add to your notes as you read.
32. What’s an advantage of note-taking according to the writer?
A. It’s a basic skill in researching a paper. B. It helps focus your mind on what the teacher says.
C. It helps you to get good marks in tests. D. It gives you a better understanding of key facts.
33. Why is Shakespeare mentioned in the passage?
A. To introduce the topic of note-taking. B. To explain what a key fact is in a teacher’s class.
C. To give an example of forming good habits. D. To compare writing styles in different times.
34. What is suggested in the third paragraph?
A. A teacher’s style should be considered when taking notes.
B. It’s helpful for teachers to learn from each other in styles.
C. It’s not always possible to note down all information in class.
D. Teachers encourage their students to be active in class.
35. What’s the writer’s opinion according to the passage?
A. Students must not ask questions while having a class.
B. Students must try to take correct and detailed notes in class.
C. Students should put down key points while listening carefully.
D. Students should put down as much information as possible in class.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. C

I like... reading and... listening to music.” Her voice was low, but she finished. Then something surprising happened. The whole class clapped. No one laughed at her. Mr. Li said, “Great job, Wang Lin! Your pronunciation is clear. Keep practicing.” Wang Lin could not believe it. She sat down and felt warm inside. For the first time, she thought maybe English was not so scary.
After class, Wang Lin felt much better. She walked to Mr. Li’s desk and said in a small voice, “Thank you, Mr. Li.” Mr. Li smiled and said, “You did well today. Remember, everyone makes mistakes. The important thing is to try.” Wang Lin nodded. On her way home, she thought about the class. She remembered the clapping and Mr. Li’s warm words. She decided to practice English every day. She would read aloud at home and listen to English songs. Maybe one day, she could speak English confidently. That night, she wrote in her diary: “Today I was brave. Tomorrow I will be even braver.”

Everyone was so friendly and polite. They made me feel at ease. It was like I’d been at the school for a hundred years!
The day started very early at 7:00 a.m.. I had my breakfast downstairs with my mom. She could tell that I was very nervous. Mom kept asking me what was wrong. She told me I had nothing to worry about and that everyone was going to love me. If they didn’t love me, Mom said to send them her way for a good talking to. I couldn’t stop laughing.
My mom dropped me off at the school gates about five minutes before the bell. A little blonde (金发的) girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving (招手) at me. She ran over and told me her name was Abigail. She was very nice and we became close straight away. We spent all morning together and began to talk to another girl called Stacey. The three of us sat together in class all day and we even made our way home together! It went so quickly. Our teacher told us that tomorrow we would really start learning and developing new skills.

A. Opposed. B. Worried.
C. Doubtful. D. Unknown.
