Only one area in the study is thought to have more than 5,000 koalas. Some areas are believed to have as few as five or ten.(该组织估计,今年考拉的数量已从2018年的逾8万只降至不足5.8万只。

Dear Tom,
I totally understand your anxiety when having to choose between the two of your favourite summer camps. I’d like to give you some suggestions.
Here are some small suggestions. First, think about your hobbies. If you love sports, pick the camp with more outdoor activities like hiking. Second, ask yourself which camp helps your study more. For example, if you want to improve Chinese, the one with Chinese classes is better.
No matter what you choose, it will be a great experience. Don’t worry too much.
Yours,

You’ll gain real-world experience and support communities in need at the same time. It’s an exciting and different way to start the next chapter of your life after high school. If you are looking to do something this autumn or winter, we recommend our Gap Projects:
Gap Project 1: Peru & the Galapagos(8 weeks)

We have options for students who’ve put off their university acceptance, and for those who don’t feel they’re ready for further education just yet.
There’s a lot you can get involved in by volunteering abroad on your gap year. You can protect endangered ecosystems and wild animals on a Conservation Project. Or, give children the educational support they desperately need on a Childcare Project. If you’re eager to be more independent, we recommend joining Flexi Trips to personalize your gap year programme.
All of our programmes focus on providing long-term, sustainable solutions. We don’t believe in quick fixes. So no matter how short or long your gap year abroad is, you’ll be part of ongoing efforts to make a real difference.

Following your passion (热爱) in life might not always be the popular choice but it is the best choice. This is a belief that David Marnah has instilled (逐渐灌输) in his three sons: Jesse, Francis, and Lord. Living in Ghana, most young boys their ages choose to play football if interested in sports. For these three teens, however, swimming is the best.
David, a football coach, often gets asked why he didn’t encourage his boys to follow his sport of choice. But for this loving father, this choice was an easy one to make — and it all originates from a sincere wish for his children to be themselves.
Having full support from their parents, these 14, 13-, and 11-year-old boys have become quite impressive swimmers. The three of them train as part of the swimming club called GH Dolphins.
While they each love the sport itself, they also have their own reasons for being as passionate as they are about it. Jesse, the oldest, is driven by the idea of making swimming a more popular choice for others in Ghana. Francis, the middle child, dreams of one day traveling to compete with athletes in other countries. For the youngest child, Lord, his love comes from watching his brothers fall in love with the sport.
“I train with the boys every time, and you should see how determined they are,” Bernard Morrison, their swim coach, said, “The boys are talented and have unique individual strengths. They have it in them to succeed, and I am excited to be part of their beginning.”
David is more than happy to cheer them on every step of the way. In fact, he doesn’t hesitate (犹豫) to change his plans in order to make sure he never misses any of their national competitions or training classes. David said, “If they see my presence and know I’m supporting them — I believe it helps them greatly to get over challenges and come out on top.”
24. What does the underlined part “this choice’ in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. David’s sons’ choice to take up a sport. B. David’s sons’ choice to follow in his steps.
C. David’s choice to become a football coach. D. David’s choice to support his sons’ passion.
25. What is the reason behind Jesse’s passion for swimming?
A. To popularize swimming in Ghana. B. To achieve personal recognition.
C. To compete internationally. D. To impress his brothers.
26. How did Bernard sound in paragraph 5?
A. Humorous. B. Confused. C. Positive. D. Curious.
27. How does David show his support for his boys?
A. He shares in their troubles. B. He plans for their training.
C. He records their competitions. D. He shows up for their activities.
C
Online games are very popular among people. They make a large amount of money and have a large user base, including lots of teenagers. But now, new rules on online games have been introduced, which are aimed at fighting against addiction (成瘾) among underage players.
Adult players need to spend most of their time paying attention to work and family, and cannot play games as often as they want. However, underage players have more spare time, but less responsibility and self-control. Children without a clear purpose in life, where there is less family education and school management, might easily become addicted to all kinds of online games and online novels.
The most direct impact of an addiction to online games among underage players is on their psychological (心理) health. According to psychologists, people seriously addicted to games can become anxious, bad tempered, and avoid responsibility.
However, Chinese parents are more worried that their children will lack interest in studying if they become addicted to online games, as academic success is important for students. Additionally, when their children become addicted to such games, most parents do not know how to deal with the situation.
To carry out the new rules to the best effect, more specific issues need to be solved, such as managing foreign online games, ensuring that facial recognition technologies used by games companies have the wanted effect or making sure online game providers can only offer one-hour services to underage players on Saturdays and Sundays. While there are always loopholes (漏洞) in new rules, authorities should act quickly to close them.
There is no doubt that online games have harmful effects on young people. It is not acceptable for a large number of teenagers or those even younger, to become addicted to these games.
28. What’s the purpose of the new rules on online games?
A. To raise awareness of Internet safety. B. To bring in new computer programs.
C. To reduce the grown-up user base. D. To prevent the teenagers’ addiction.
29. Why are underage players addicted to online games more easily?
A. They can learn more knowledge on the Internet.
B. They have more free time and less self-control.
C. They have purposes in life but lack higher education.
D. They maintain a sense of curiosity about the Internet.
30. What problem has to be solved to ensure the effect of the new rules?
A. How to reduce parents’ anxiety about kids’ study.
B. How to find loopholes in the popular online games.
C. How to control the service time of online game providers.
D. How to invent a facial recognition game for young players.
31. What is the author’s attitude to the new rules ?
A. Confused. B. Negative.
C. Supportive. D. Uninterested.
D
The Australian Koala Foundation says Australia has lost about 30 percent of its koalas over the past three years. The non-profit group says drought (干旱), wildfires and development projects played a part in the drop in the koala population. They are strongly advising the government to do more to protect the animal’s environment.
The group guesses the koala population has dropped to less than 58,000 this year from more than 80,000 in 2018. The biggest decrease is in the state of New South Wales, where the numbers have dropped by 41 percent. Deborah Tabart leads the Australian Koala Foundation. She called the drop “quite dramatic”. Only one area in the study is thought to have more than 5,000 koalas. Some areas are believed to have as few as five or ten.
Tabart said the country needs a koala protection law. She added, “What we’re concerned about is places like western New South Wales where the drought over the last ten years has just added to this effect-river systems completely dry for years, river red gum trees, which are the lifeblood of koalas, dead.”
The loss in New South Wales likely sped up after large forest areas were destroyed by wildfires in late 2019 and early 2020. But some of those areas already had no koalas. Land clearing by building developers and road builders has also destroyed the koala’s environment.
“I think everyone gets it, and we’ve got to change. But if those building-machines keep working, then I really fear for the koalas,” Tabart said.
32. How does the author introduce koalas’ situation in paragraph 2?
A. By listing problems. B. By comparing facts.
C. By presenting data. D. By analyzing reasons.
33. What does the underlined word “dramatic” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Surprising. B. Satisfying. C. Confusing. D. Relaxing.
34. Which of the following is Tabart’s advice to protect koalas?
A. Increasing forest areas. B. Making protection laws.
C. Improving river systems. D. Planting river red gum trees.
35. What did Tabart think of people’s action of protecting koalas?
A. It was successful. B. It was promising.
C. It was unchangeable. D. It was far from enough.

Do your eyes feel uncomfortable or dry? If so, you might have dry eye syndrome (综合征). ____36___ It can affect the enjoyment of social activities and your ability to focus on your studies. But solutions for dry eyes do exist, so read on.
In the past, dry eye syndrome was mainly a condition experienced by older adults, but it now affects many young people as well. Dry eye often results from overuse of computers or smartphones, which causes the user to blink (眨眼) less. Since blinking helps keep our eyes wet, a lack (缺少) of it can lead to dry eye. ____37___ As a result, those who spend a lot of time indoors are particularly at risk. Finally, wearing a medical mask can cause dry eye, since breathing with a mask on can force air out through the top of the mask and into our eyes.
____38__ The first step toward prevention is cleanliness. When you wash your face, clean your eyes with a mild soap. Then, cover your eyes with a warm, wet cloth. Preventing dry eye also means avoiding tiredness in the eyes, so take frequent breaks when using your computer. While you’re on a computer break, focus on blinking, making sure that you close your eyes fully on each blink. __39__ Another way to prevent dry eye is to drink more water. For good overall health, experts advise drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water per day, which will increase tear production.
If you suffer from dry eye syndrome, these steps can go a long way toward making your eyes feel better. However, if the problem doesn’t go away, then it’s time to see a doctor. ____40__
A. After all, your health is worth keeping an eye on.
B. Blinking can help protect the surface of your eyes.
C. This happens when you don’t produce enough tears.
D. Air-conditioning and fans also contribute to dry eye.
E. Limit screen time and take breaks from staring at screens.
F. Treatments for dry eyes can include eye exercises and eye drops.
G. All it takes is a few lifestyle changes to prevent and treat dry eye syndrome.
