Darren 93 January 2026 in Relationships
I’ve always got on well with my little brother. He’s two years younger than me, so I’ve always felt really protective towards him. Well, that was until a few weeks ago. The problem is that he now goes to the same middle school as me but he doesn’t seem to get that school is different from home. He and his friends seem to think it’s funny to follow me around and play jokes on me. At first, my friends thought it was quite funny, but now he’s really starting to get on their nerves. They’ve kind of shut me out. I’ve spoken to my parents and they had a word with him, but it’s made no difference. If anything, it’s made things worse. Honestly, I don’t know what to do next and I’m afraid I’ll say something to him that I might regret. What should I do?
Jenny
Just ignore him——that’s the key. Clearly, you’d like him to stop, but I suppose the more he sees his behaviors influencing you, the more he’ll do it on purpose. Just act like he isn’t there! Then he’ll get bored and realize it’s much more fun to hang out with people in his own year than to stick to his older brother.
Eric
Turn the tables on him. Follow him around and see how he likes it. Surely you know enough foolish things about him. If he still never changes, you could warn him you would share these secrets with others to make his life grey!

For two months White Fang had lived among the men of the camp, and in that time he had learned much. He had learned that the man-animals were masters, that their voices were law, and that their hands were to be feared when they were raised in anger. But he had also learned that one man-animal, the boy who called himself Weedon Scott, was different. This man did not strike him, did not shout at him, and even brought him meat from his own plate.
The other dogs of the camp hated White Fang with a bitter hatred. They were all half-wild curs, bred for fighting, and they saw in the lean, silent wolf-dog a rival who must be driven out or killed. Every day they gathered around him, snarling, snapping, daring him to fight. White Fang stood his ground, his lips drawn back over his white fangs, his eyes blazing with a cold, deadly light. He had fought too many fights in the wild to be cowed by a pack of yapping curs.
One afternoon, as Weedon Scott sat on the ground cleaning his rifle, the big mastiff Skagos, the fiercest dog in the camp, crept up behind him. Skagos had been bribed by the other dogs to attack the boy, to drive the strange wolf-dog away by killing his protector. With a low growl, the great dog sprang, his jaws wide open to fasten on the boy's throat.
White Fang was standing ten feet away, watching. In that instant, all the wild blood of his wolf-ancestors, all the cruel cunning of his mother Kiche, all the hard lessons of the wild, surged through him. He did not think, he did not hesitate. Like a bolt of gray lightning he launched himself across the space between them, his body striking Skagos in mid-leap. The two great beasts rolled over and over on the ground, snapping, tearing, growling. White Fang fought with a ferocity that none of the camp dogs had ever seen. He did not fight to drive his enemy away, but to kill. In less than a minute, he had seized Skagos by the throat and shaken him till his neck broke. The big mastiff lay still, and White Fang stood over him, his chest heaving, his fangs red with blood, looking at the boy who had fed him and been kind to him.
Weedon Scott did not run, did not shout. He only reached out his hand and laid it on White Fang’s head. “Good boy,” he said softly.
From that moment, a new thing came into White Fang’s life. For the first time in all his years, he knew what it meant to be loved. He curled up at the boy's feet that night, and for the first time he slept without one ear open, without listening for the sound of an enemy. He had found his master, and he would serve him, fight for him, die for him, all the days of his life.
12. Why does White Fang attack Skagos with all his strength?
A. Skagos has made White Fang angry, trying to get the position of camp leader.
B. Skagos is encouraged by other dogs to attack White Fang’s master Weedon Scott.
C. White Fang wants to kill Skagos to prove he is the strongest dog in the camp.
D. Skagos steals White Fang's food, and the two have long held the dislikes against each other.
13. Which of the following descriptions of Weedon Scott matches the passage?
A. He is the only person in the camp brave enough to train White Fang, and often beats him to make him obey orders.
B. Like other people in the camp, he thinks White Fang is a dangerous animal.
C. He shares meat from his own plate with White Fang instead of beating him.
D. He trains White Fang to take part in dog fighting matches, hoping to win prize money.
14. What is the final result of the fight between White Fang and Skagos?
A. The two fight to a draw, and Skagos escapes with injuries.
B. White Fang is bitten and injured by Skagos, and is finally saved only after Weedon Scott shoots Skagos.
C. In less than a minute, White Fang bites through Skagos’s throat and kills him.
D. Other camp dogs take advantage of the chaos to attack, and White Fang is beaten to death.
15. How does White Fang feel after the fight ends?
A. He hates all humans and plans to find a chance to run away from the camp.
B. For the first time, he experiences what it means to be loved.
C. He thinks he has become the new leader of the camp.
D. He begins to hate Weedon Scott for not stepping forward to help him drive Skagos away in time.
16. What role does the scene described in the passage play in the whole story of White Fang?
A. It is a memory of White Fang’s childhood, when he lived with his mother Kiche in the forest.
B. It’s the turning point where White Fang completely lets go of his wild nature and accepts human trust.
C. It is the part where White Fang takes part in his first dog fighting match.

Scientists have found a new way of identifying (识别) animals in an area—by testing DNA in the air. The researchers believe their new method could help scientists keep track of animals that are hard to notice, including endangered animals.
Two teams of scientists—one in Denmark and one in the United Kingdom—thought of the same question at about the same time: Could they identify the animals in an area from DNA that was simply floating in the air?
Every living thing has DNA that can be used to identify it. They leave bits of DNA behind them wherever they go. DNA left behind like this is called “environmental” DNA. or eDNA. Scientists can use it to tell what kinds of animals are in a certain place.
Testing for eDNA isn’t a new idea. But most of the time, scientists look for eDNA in water. Neither team knew that the other group was working on a similar experiment. One collected samples (样本) from different locations at Denmark’s Copenhagen Zoo, and the other at Hamerton Zoo Park in the UK. The scientists used slightly (稍微) different methods to collect their samples. But basically, both teams used vacuums (真空吸尘器) and fans to collect tiny bits of DNA.
In the laboratory, by comparing their samples with examples of DNA from different animals, the scientists were able to identify many different animals at the zoos.
The scientists chose to test in zoos because they had rare animals not naturally found in the area. Each team only discovered about the other experiment after they had written a paper about their own results. The two decided to combine (合并) their results and publish a paper together.
Both teams are excited about the ways this new method could be used in the wild. The researchers believe the method could help scientists a lot. Scientists have been looking for better ways to track endangered animals without interfering (干扰) with them. If researchers know where the animals live, they can do a better job of protecting them. The next step is to work out how to take this method into nature.
17. What is the primary purpose of using eDNA according to the article?
A. To prevent DNA of animals from floating in the air.
B. To attract rare animals to zoos for better protection.
C. To identify animals by testing DNA found in the air.
D. To save endangered animals away from all the diseases.
18. Which of the following is TRUE about the two teams of scientists?
A. They knew each other very well before.
B. They found more rare animals for zoos.
C. They worked together to publish a paper.
D. They used quite different methods to collect DNA.
19. What does the underlined phrase “keep track of” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. protect B. follow C. discover D. feed
20. What is the article mainly about?
A. Proper ways of studying rare animals. B. Differences between DNA and eDNA.
C. Challenges of protecting endangered animals. D. The eDNA Testing for Animal Identification.

How many times have you heard—or said—“I’ll do it tomorrow”—when the dishes are waiting or your room looks like a storm has passed through? For many teenagers, housework feels like a small mountain standing between them and their free time. Yet a growing number of researchers say those little jobs are worth far more than they look.
A long-term study followed young teenagers for many years and found something interesting. Those who regularly did chores—setting the table, folding clothes, walking the dog—were more likely to grow into confident and helpful adults. “Everyday tasks give children a feeling: I am part of this family, and my work matters,” one researcher explained. “That feeling of being useful”, she adds, “is a powerful fuel for growing up”.
Chores also teach skills that no test can measure. Cooking a simple meal, finding the best price at the corner shop, or fixing a broken lamp teaches planning, patience and the art of solving problems step by step. One boy proudly makes noodles for the family when his parents come home late. “It’s not just about the noodles,” says his mother. “He sees what we do, and he joins in.”
Some parents, however, worry that chores will eat into study time. Most experts see it differently. Studies in several countries have found no sign that proper housework hurts grades. In fact, when students are stuck on homework, a ten-minute break spent tidying up or walking the dog often helps them return with a clearer head.
So the kitchen need not be the enemy of the desk. Young people who learn to serve at home, experts say, grow into adults who can stand on their own—and who care about the world beyond their own rooms.

【答案】17. C 18. C 19. B 20. D

In the first two months, Wang Na played for less than ten minutes in total. Every time the coach looked towards the bench, her heart rose—but the coach always called someone ____22____. Those words stayed with Wang Na. From then on, she trained with a new ____25____. She arrived early, shot five hundred free throws a week, and kept a small notebook of her mistakes. “Being twelfth is not an ____26____,” she wrote on the first page. “It is a position.”

六、阅读表达 (本大题共 5 小题,每小题2分,共10分)
阅读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题,每小题答案不超过8个单词。
