四、阅读理解

When engineers began work on a new reservoir in Zhejiang Province in 2018, they discovered a problem. In the middle of the area that would soon be under water stood Qinglong Bridge, a 300-year-old stone bridge that local people had crossed every day for generations.

The first plan was simple: let the water cover it. But residents protested. For them the bridge was not only a way across the river; it was where they had said goodbye to soldiers in 1949, where children had learned to swim, and where the whole village had gathered for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The local government turned to experts from a nearby university. After months of research, they made an unusual proposal: instead of leaving the bridge or building a wall around it, they would move it — all 480 tons of it — to higher ground two kilometres away.

The work took fourteen months. Every stone was numbered, photographed and taken down piece by piece. The most difficult part was not the size of the bridge but its shape: the arch depended on the weight of each stone pressing against the next, so the order in which the stones were put back had to be exactly right.page number 1

In September 2020 the bridge was reopened. It now stands in a small park beside the new road, and the stones fit together so well that visitors can hardly see where the old structure was repaired. “We did not save a bridge,” said one engineer. “We saved the memory of a village.”

The project cost far more than knocking the bridge down would have. It was, however, warmly welcomed by the public, and the site has since become a popular place for local schools to hold history lessons. Similar projects are now being discussed in three other provinces.
