四、阅读理解

In 1985, a stone head was stolen from a temple in a small village in Cambodia. For the next thirty-eight years it travelled through the art markets of three continents, appearing in private collections in Europe and finally in a museum in the United States.

It was found almost by accident. A researcher looking through an online catalogue noticed that the object’s description did not match its photographs: the style was Cambodian, not Indian, and the break at the neck looked fresh rather than ancient. She reported it to the authorities.

What followed took two years. Experts compared the head with old photographs of the temple taken by French researchers in the 1920s. Village elders were interviewed, and a piece of the statue that had never left Cambodia was matched to the break. Finally, the museum agreed to return the object.

The head arrived home in March 2023. It was carried through the village on the shoulders of local men, and more than 2,000 people came to watch. For many of them it was the first time in their lives that the temple had been complete.page number 1

The case is one of thousands. Since 2000, more than 160 countries have worked together to return over 5,000 stolen objects to their countries of origin. Progress is slow, and many objects are still missing, but the direction has changed: museums that once bought such pieces without question now investigate where they came from.

For the village, however, the meaning is simpler. “We never stopped believing it would come back,” said an eighty-year-old resident. “My grandmother prayed in front of that statue. Now my grandchildren can too.”
