四、阅读理解

For years, the small town of Calcata in Italy was slowly dying. Its houses were falling down and young people were leaving for the cities. Then, in the 1960s, artists began to move in, attracted by the low rents and the quiet streets. Today Calcata is famous — and that has become its newest problem.

On a sunny Saturday in summer, the town’s single street can hold more than 4,000 visitors. Calcata itself has fewer than 900 residents. The narrow lanes were built for donkeys, not for crowds, and the ancient walls were never designed to carry the weight of thousands of people leaning on them every week.

In 2022 the town council decided to act. Visitors must now book in advance and pay a small fee of 3 euros. The number of people allowed in at any one time is limited to 1,500, and the money collected is spent on repairing the walls and cleaning the streets.

The decision was not popular at first. Shop owners worried that fewer visitors would mean less business. After the first year, however, the numbers told a different story: total visitor numbers fell by only 8 per cent, while the money each visitor spent went up by more than 20 per cent.page number 1

“People who pay to come in stay longer and buy more,” says Maria Rossi, who runs a small bookshop near the gate. “Before, they walked through in fifteen minutes and bought nothing. Now they sit in the café and ask about the history of the town.”

Other historic towns in Italy are watching Calcata closely. The idea that a place can be protected by limiting access rather than by opening it to everyone is still unusual, but it is spreading. “We are not a museum,” says the mayor. “We are a town where people live.”
