Chester Greenwood was 15 years old. All he wanted to do was ice skate. However, the freezing cold of winter in Farmington, the USA, made his ears hurt. He tried to cover them with gloved hands, but that made it difficult to skate. After that, he tried to wear a scarf around his head, but the wool was rough and uncomfortable.
Searching for a way to solve it, Chester shaped two pieces of thin metal (金属) into circles to cover his ears. He then connected (连接) them with a longer piece to make a headband (头带). His grandmother sewed (缝) soft cloth to the inside and fur to the outside of the circles. This design kept out the winter air. Chester was happy with what he had made. The earmuffs (耳罩) with lightweight, hands-free, soft ear protectors became a hit. They were so popular that many kids asked him to make more.
Three years later in 1877, Chester protected his invention of the earmuffs by getting a patent (专利). This was a special government license that prevented anybody from copying Chester’s idea. At the time it was granted, he was only 18. By 1883, his Farmington factory produced 30,000 earmuffs a year, climbing to 400,000 by his death in 1937.
Although Chester became famous for his earmuffs, they were not the only thing he invented. He came up with many good ideas for new products during his lifetime. Video calls are common now. But have you ever imagined touching the person on the other end of the line? Scientists are making this possible.
To create this faraway touch, researchers have invented a device called SSD.It can feel touch on the skin. Scientists put the SSD into a thin glove. Inside the glove, there are soft artificial “muscles”. They really feel like humans’ real ones. These “muscles” move an actuator (触器), and the actuator pulls your skin lightly in three directions. One small pull can tell you lots of information, such as how strong, what direction, how powerful and even the shape of the touch. In this way, the glove sends clear 3D touch messages to your skin, without the help of pictures or sounds.
How does it work? Suppose you make a video call with a friend. Both of you wear the special SSD gloves. When your friend picks up a thing, his glove gets soft pressure (压力) on his finger. It sends it to your glove. Your glove copies the same pressure, so you feel the thing just as your friend does.
________ However, in the near future, they will be useful in many fields. We can feel hugs from family far away. Doctors can use them to check faraway patients. Students may “feel” lab tools in online science classes.
Soon, video calls will not only let us see each other. We can even feel handshakes through the screen!
1.What can the SSD do according to Paragraph 2?
A.It can send pictures and sounds quickly.
B.It can feel touch and send touch information.
C.It can help people speak to friends for free.
D.It can help with people’s skin problems.

3.What does your glove do after it receives the pressure?
A.It picks up the thing. B.It copies the same pressure.
C.It makes a video call. D.It sends pictures.
4.Which sentence can be put in ________ in paragraph 4?

Table tennis has been played for many years and it’s popular around the world. The sport is beginner-friendly. However, it’s almost impossible for people with poor vision (视力) or complete blindness to experience the joy of this sport.
Phoebe Peng, an engineering student in Australia, invented a new system (系统) to help the blind play table tennis using sound. In one study, she installed (安装) cameras and loudspeakers (扬声器) along the sides of a traditional ping-pong table. As the cameras tracked (追踪) the movement of the ball, a computer program turned the information into sound and then the sound came out of the loudspeakers. The blind players could use the sound to know where the ball was and then they could return the ball fast and properly.
“The small size of the ball and the movement of the ball in 3D space make table tennis difficult to play for those with poor vision or complete blindness,” said Peng. “The cameras I used were special. They were good at tracking small objects like table tennis balls.”
Although the study worked well, Peng said more experiments (试验) would be needed before the system could be ready for actual play. “Different people perceive (感知) sound differently. 三、阅读理解
One was for the design of a metal rake that is still used today to collect fallen leaves every autumn. Chester was an inventor for ordinary people. He would look at everyday jobs that needed effort and then try to find a way to do them more easily.

2.What does the underlined word “artificial” probably mean?
A.Man-made. B.Natural. C.Weak. D.True.
3.What does your glove do after it receives the pressure?
A.It picks up the thing. B.It copies the same pressure.
C.It makes a video call. D.It sends pictures.
4.Which sentence can be put in ________ in paragraph 4?
A.The gloves are ready in the market for us now.
B.People can use it in many areas at the moment.
C.The gloves are still in the lab now.
D.The gloves can work without any signals.
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The history and development of video calls.
B.The introduction to a special touch glove with SSD.
C.Different kinds of high-tech gloves in the market.
D.Advice on how to communicate with friends.
What kind of sound should we use in the system? Should we play the sound without stopping? These are the problems we are facing now, but I am sure we can solve them in the near future.”
1.What can we know about Phoebe Peng?
A.She is a student from Australia.
B.She is blind but likes playing ping-pong.
C.She wants to help blind people at school.
D.She has taken part in many table tennis competitions.
2.How did the blind players know where the table tennis ball was in the study?
A.By imagining the movement of the ball.
B.By listening to the sound from the loudspeakers.
C.By communicating with other players who can see.
D.By following the orders from the computer.
3.Which of the following would Phoebe Peng probably agree with?
A.The best sport for blind people is table tennis.
B.It is not necessary for blind people to do sports.
C.People should invent more new sports for blind people.
D.People can't use the system in practice for now.
4.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.A system that can help the blind see things.
B.A ping-pong player with excellent skills.
C.A sport that is very popular all over the world.
D.A system that is to help the blind play ping-pong.
