I took him in as a kitten of about six months. Before he joined my home he had been roaming outdoors with a few other young cats. Once I moved to a fourth-floor flat, he turned into a permanent indoor companion with a serious appetite. I generally call him Fat Phil. I care for him deeply, though he is essentially a furry loaf. The moment I knew things had gone too far was when he no longer fit his carrier and I had to buy one meant for a mid-sized dog. Determined to keep Phil around for many years, I knew his meals had to change — whether he approved or not. Slim Phil could not simply replace Fat Phil overnight, since losing weight too fast can harm a cat. Phil’s vet sent me to a website that works out how many calories a cat should eat daily to shed pounds safely. That was when I found you apparently need university-level maths to decode cat-food calories. Phil now eats a blend of raw, air-dried, and tinned food, starting his plan at 270 calories a day. Ever tried adding up the calories in the food brands your cat likes best? Some brands omit the figure from the packet; others squeeze it into print so small you need a magnifier, or state it in a way that demands algebra to untangle. I tell myself again and again that this is the healthiest plan a vet could prescribe. After well over a year, his daily allowance has finally fallen to 250 calories. Still, it is a constant battle. He is a committed thief of food. He starts demanding dinner around one in the afternoon, sometimes rising on his back legs to give my shoulder a tap with a front paw while I work at my laptop. If he could read a clock, he would already be nudging me toward the feeding hour. Shrugging off those pleading looks takes all the willpower I can muster, yet I hold firm. Any day now, my boy will shrink that dog-sized frame down to the size of an unusually large cat. 21. What does the author find difficult when calculating Jean-Philippe’s food intake? A. Phil refuses to eat raw, freeze-dried and canned food. B. Calorie information can’t be found on cat food labels. C. Phil’s doctor fails to give useful suggestions on his diet. D. The calorie information on cat food is unclear or hard to find. 22. What does the writer imply by “a constant battle” in the last paragraph? A. Keeping Phil on his diet remains difficult. B. The writer intends to stop the cat’s diet plan. C. Phil’s health keeps worsening over the year. D. Feeding Phil has become much boring now. 23. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude towards Jean-Philippe? A. Tolerant, the cat will remain huge. B. Generous, yet losing patience with Phil’s habits. C. Loving, yet determined to follow the health plan. D. Scientific, relying on complex calculations. B Roughly 2,700 years ago, a woman who herded animals in the dry lands of north-west China was laid to rest wearing a coat of animal skin, woollen trousers, and leather boots — dressed, that is, for riding, and buried beside her leather saddle. Recovered from the Yanghai graves near Turpan and dated between 700 and 400 B.C., this saddle is the earliest ever found, and it upsets long-held beliefs about who rode with such equipment and why. The discovery came as “a surprise,” says Patrick Wertmann of the University of Zurich, who led the study. Saddles survive so rarely because their natural materials rot away. Bridles and bits turn up more often, yet they do not prove a saddle was used. Before the Yanghai find, the earliest saddles scientists had on record came from the Pazyryk culture, around the Altai region of Kazakhstan and Russia, north of Turpan. Although specialists can only assign those Pazyryk pieces an indirect fifth-century B.C. date, Wertmann believes that culture had already developed saddle use centuries before. Saved by the area’s dry air, the Yanghai saddle reveals a great deal about early riding craft and the people who made it. Its two wing-like panels of hide, packed with a blend of straw, deer hair and camel hair, were stitched along the edges and left hollow in the middle — a design that spared the horse’s backbone. Such features show “a growing concern for the rider’s comfort and safety, and for the horse’s welfare,” Wertmann notes. Greater ease in the saddle allowed longer journeys and more contact between groups. “Unlike the later elite Scythian finds, this early saddle used cheap materials and belonged to an ordinary woman,” the study adds, “yet it shows the same skill.” The Yanghai saddle also overturns the idea that such gear was solely a man’s military tool. “Finding it in a woman’s tomb tells us women took part in the daily life of horse-herding peoples — herding and travelling included,” Wertmann says. 24. According to the passage, the owner of the world’s oldest known saddle was most likely a ________. A. male warrior from the Pazyryk culture B. female herdswoman from northwest China C. Scythian noblewoman D. horse-riding pioneer from Kazakhstan 25. What is the main significance of the Yanghai saddle discovery as emphasized in the passage? A. It proves that horseback riding originated in China. B. It reveals the high cost and elite status of its owner. C. It challenges previous assumptions about saddle users and purposes. D. It demonstrates the superior preservation techniques of the Yanghai people. 26. The underlined word “wing-like” in the description of the saddle (paragraph 5) most likely refers to the hides being ________. A. shaped like wings to help the horse run faster B. sewn together without any stuffing in the middle C. filled with a mixture of different animal hairs D. shaped to curve upwards on either side of the horse’s spine 27. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. The Yanghai saddle is made of expensive materials, indicating the high status of its owner. B. The Pazyryk saddles are now confirmed to be older than the Yanghai saddle. C. The design of the Yanghai saddle shows consideration for the horse’s well-being. D. Before this discovery it was assumed that saddles were first used by women for herding. C Whether the objects are enemy tanks in wartime, wild animals, or spoons in a busy cafeteria, totalling things that keep moving is no easy task. Fortunately, a method exists that estimates a whole population without counting every last item. The capture-recapture approach begins with a sample: wait for some creatures to wander past, catch a few, mark them distinctly, then let them rejoin the group. After a while, you capture another batch and see how many already bear your mark. Suppose you first caught and marked 50 animals; on the second round, if half of those you catch are marked, that ratio suggests half the entire population carries a mark — meaning roughly 100 individuals in all. In the 1940s, researchers hoped to estimate how many tanks Germany was building. Those tanks were not sent back once seized, yet each carried a serial number, so the team logged every number they saw, assuming the tanks were numbered in fixed order and mixed at random. With the largest recorded number L and the count of captured tanks n, one estimate of total production is L + L/n — the famous “German tank problem.” A favourite counting tale of mine comes from a teacher friend who asked her class to work out how many forks the school cafeteria held — a figure one could never tally by hand, since some were in use and some in the wash at any moment. Her students “captured” a batch of forks, dotted each with a dab of nail polish, and released them. A week later they caught another sample and used it to estimate the total. About twenty years ago researchers ran a similar stunt to nudge lab staff into returning borrowed items: after too many teaspoons went missing, they marked a set, tracked where they went, and published the results — proof that science works best when its findings are shared. 28. According to the passage, the capture-recapture method works by ________. A. counting every individual in a population one by one B. estimating a total population from the marked proportion in a later sample C. recording serial numbers of all captured objects D. marking objects and keeping them permanently in a lab 29. In order to estimate the production of German tanks, statisticians need to know the ________. A. fixed order in which German tanks were numbered B. smallest and largest serial numbers of captured tanks C. average of the serial numbers of all the tanks in a battle D. total of the captured tanks and their largest serial number 30. What can you infer about the final result of the teaspoon experiment? A. The missing teaspoons were equal to the released teaspoons. B. Scientists proposed an effective technique to count numbers. C. Missing teaspoons were sheepishly returned by spoon stealers. D. Researchers worked out the total of the missing forks in the lab. 31. What is the passage mainly about? A. Mysteries solved by capturing animals. B. The origin of a mathematical technique. C. A trick helping you count moving objects. D. Distinct occasions adding to difficulty in life. D When a fire at a supplier's factory forced a temporary shutdown at the plant of a large European manufacturer of consumer goods, Tim Schweisfurth and his colleagues at the Technical University of Munich found a surprising upside: The idleness (闲散) led to an outpouring of ideas for improvements. The conclusion: Unexpected Interruptions Can Boost Creativity. We discovered this when we looked at the online system the company used to collect plant workers' ideas and suggestions. People could enter submissions whenever they were on-site. Some proposed small changes, like replacing worn tools; others, major ones, such as a new paint-ordering system that saved the firm €280,000 a year. The 8,500 employees in the part of the plant that shut down were sent home for four days. In the three weeks after they returned to work, they produced 58% more ideas than uninterrupted employees did. In addition, their ideas were higher quality: Managers rated the accepted submissions and determined that those from sidelined employees were roughly three percentage points better than those from other workers. We also studied an unexpected interruption at the plant that didn't lead to idle time: a flood that required employees to clean up the damage. That incident lowered creative performance because workers had to switch their attention to the new task. A similar thing happens when your focus immediately shifts after a social media app beeps to signal a new post. There are many good reasons to take a vacation, but our research doesn't suggest it will improve your creativity at work, because it wouldn't be an unexpected interruption. When we looked at a third kind of interruption — extended weekends — we found no increase in suggestions after people returned. We think the reason has to do with so-called attention residue: the sweet spot for creativity. It's when our minds keep thinking over something important even after we've moved on to another activity. When we do something that lets us totally disengage, such as a long vacation, we don't experience the same attention residue, so we don't get the same breakthroughs. 32. What was discovered about workers who went through a four-day plant closure? A. Their creative output dropped sharply. B. They mainly handed in small tool-related proposals. C. The majority of their proposals won managerial approval. D. They generated more and higher-quality ideas upon return. 33 What conclusion regarding unforeseen disruptions can be drawn from the research? A. Having spare time harms the birth of new ideas. B. Whether creativity appears hinges on how much focus lingers on the prior task. C. Creativity is fixed by a person's level of concentration. D. Workers become more inventive when confronting a difficulty. 34. The phrase "attention residue" in the final paragraph is closest in meaning to _________. A. ongoing mental involvement B. an essential inner foundation C. short-term mental relaxation D. a regular pattern of jumping between tasks 35. Which of the following circumstances is most likely to enhance creativity? A. A long weekend spent at home. B. A five-day prearranged tour to a beauty spot. C. A brief, unplanned pause during work. D. An unanticipated job-related task. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Why Stuffed Animals Are So Beloved Stuffed animals, or plush toys, are a cherished part of childhood for many. Yet their appeal extends far beyond the early years. Whether it’s a soft lion or a cuddly bunny, these comforting companions have a unique place in the hearts of millions. 36________ One of the primary reasons stuffed animals are so beloved is the comfort they provide. For children, these soft, huggable toys often serve as a source of emotional security. The act of cuddling a stuffed animal can provide reassurance and a sense of calm. 37________ The tactile sensation of soft fabric and the comforting weight of a plush toy can act like a physical comfort object, similar to a security blanket. Besides, stuffed animals often become loyal companions, offering emotional support. 38________ The attachment they develop to their stuffed animals is not just a passing phase. It often carries lasting emotional significance well into adulthood. 39________ Children might “care” for their toys in ways they see adults caring for them, developing empathy and nurturing skills. This kind of play helps children understand complex emotions like love, concern, and responsibility. This allows them to build emotional intelligence from an early age. Beyond emotional comfort, stuffed animals have been used as tools in therapy. In child psychology, therapists often incorporate stuffed animals to help children express their emotions, fears, and wishes in a non-threatening way. When a child has difficulty verbalizing complex feelings, a stuffed animal can serve as a “voice” for those emotions. 40________ Many find comfort in hugging or holding a plush toy as a way to alleviate stress, anxiety, or even physical pain. A growing body of research suggests hugging a stuffed animal can reduce stress hormones, and trigger the release of oxytocin, which promotes feelings of well-being and relaxation. A. Why do they hold such a special place in seeking comfort? B. Many children treat them as real friends or family members. C. But what makes stuffed animals more than just simple toys? D. Stuffed animals are also often used as a form of role-playing. E. It can help children feel safe, especially during times of stress. F. Cuddling stuffed animals in therapy can keep adults in high spirits. G. Adults too can benefit from the therapeutic aspects of stuffed animals. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Nearly everyone fails now and then to live by the words they say — a fair description of hypocrisy. We are 41________ to notice this gap in other people, yet we struggle to see it in ourselves. Studies even find that the folks we most enjoy calling hypocrites are our rivals, and those we feel are unlike us. We have reason to paint others as hypocrites when it wins a debate, but we usually 42________ our own contradictions. Their hypocrisy irritates us because it feels 43________ — as if they are 44________ suggesting they are finer than they truly are. No one enjoys being a hypocrite. Still, 45________ nobody can behave perfectly consistently, since different moments call for different choices. Consider parenting: you might rightly warn your teen against heavy drinking, though you did the same in college. One vegetarian student who loves animals confessed she occasionally wore “cute” 46________ shoes. If we can so readily detect hypocrisy in others, how do we get better at noticing and 47________ it in ourselves? First, we can 48________ that occasional inconsistency is simply human. Bear in mind, too, that hypocrisy is merely one 49________ for such conduct. Daniel Effron, a scholar of the subject, 50________ sticking the hypocrite label on others. “It can keep you from 51________ what their argument actually says,” he warns. Spotting our own hypocrisy also demands a little 52________. Ask: “Does my conduct match the beliefs I 53________?” Should you conclude you are being hypocritical, own it. Research shows that when people are 54________ their own hypocrisy, others are more likely to forgive the inconsistency. The good news: those who catch their own hypocrisy often feel pushed to change, because the 55________ of preaching one thing while doing another sits uneasily with them. Instead of shrinking from our hypocrisy, we should treat it as a chance to improve next time. 41. A. foolish B. quick C. good D. unwilling 42. A. show B. hide C. better D. defend 43. As a delivery rider, he had just finished a few smooth orders, his hands warm from the hot milk tea cups he’d been carrying, and his spirits fairly good. Stepping out of a milk tea shop, he found the spot where his second-hand electric bike had been parked now empty. In an instant, his heart sank, and a wave of hopelessness swept over him, turning his calm evening into a nightmare. That bike was far more than just a vehicle; it was his lifeline, the only way for him to earn daily income and cover his living expenses. Panic set in as he remembered the undelivered orders — especially a cup of hot milk tea for Ms. White, a regular customer. His hand trembled as he pressed the voice button, his words laced with sorrow and anxiety as he apologized repeatedly, offering to pay for the undelivered drink. To his great surprise, Ms. White did not respond with anger or complaint, but with gentle kindness. Ms. White told him not to worry and to take his time finding his bike. Her understanding words calmed him, but also deepened his sense of responsibility. “She is so kind. I cannot let her down,” he thought. For nearly two hours, he searched every nearby street, but there was no sign of his bike. As night grew darker and the wind bit harder, Jack clenched his fists and made a firm decision. He took out his poor savings, bought a bag of fresh apples and a new cup of hot milk tea, then set off on foot to Ms. White’s apartment, several kilometers away. The wind bit into his thin jacket, and his old shoes grew heavy with mud, but the thought of keeping his promise and maintaining his integrity kept him moving forward through the dimly lit urban landscape. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Finally, breathless, Jack reached Ms. White’s doorstep and rang the bell. ______________ _____________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Deeply moved by Jack’s action, Ms. White decided to share the story online that night. (41—55):41-45 B B D A C 46-50 A D B C D 51-55 A C D C C 语法填空(56—65):56. official 57. diversity 58. businesses 59. grown 60. with 61. a 62. celebrated 63. and 64. remarkably 65. to shine 二、阅读理解 解析 A篇(21—23) (人与宠物) 21. His clothes were dusty, but the gifts in his hands were held with care. “Ms. White, these are for you,” he grinned, offering the apples and milk tea. “Wishing you happiness and good health. I am truly sorry about the delay.” Tears welled up in Ms. White’s eyes. “Oh, Jack! You shouldn’t have walked such a long way just for this!” she said, her voice soft with emotion for his unshakable honesty, even amid his own misfortune! Deeply moved by Jack’s action, Ms. White decided to share the story online that night. She posted a video describing what happened, writing, “Even when caught in his own storm, he still reached out to warm others.” The post quickly went viral, receiving millions of likes and shares. Strangers were touched by the ordinary man’s extraordinary act. The wave of kindness soon reached his delivery company. They promptly responded, providing Jack with a brand-new e-bike and a cash reward to support his honest work. Even more wonderfully, with the help of numerous alert eyes online, his original bike was located and returned. 现在分词作状语;whose 引导定语从句;even when caught in his own storm 时间状语从句省略。 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
