Gliding (滑行) down the Tambopata River in the Peruvian Amazon, I understand the luxury of being on a boat at night in the jungle. The air is thick with 35℃ heat and 99 percent humidity (湿度). The constant breeze generated by our moving boat offers much-needed escape from the heat, while also keeping the endless mosquitoes at bay.
I am part of a team of five, led by Chris Ketola from Fauna Forever, a conservation NGO (non-governmental organization). We’re here at night, when caimans (凯门鳄) are most active, to record any sighting and to catch one for crucial data such as body measurements. This will help us to learn more about caiman biology and assess population health to aid in the species’ conservation.
A massive shape appears in the current ahead. Our driver Pipi, blind from his back position, reacts instantly to Chris’s torch signals. The boat turns sharply, missing the log by inches. I let out a sigh of relief but everyone acts as if the near miss is simply part of the night’s routine. Moments later, the reflective eyes of a caiman catch Chris’s torchlight. We change our course, approaching slowly and quietly.
My love for the Amazon began during my 2017 visit to Tambopata, where I dreamed of documenting its unparalleled biodiversity. Now, with Fauna Forever, I’m living that dream.
Pipi cuts the engine and glides alongside a caiman, stopping about an arm’s length away. He slowly extends his hand above the reptile, pauses, and then plunges his hand into the water. Securing a hold on the animal, he pulls it out. “A juvenile white caiman,” he states, “about a year old”.
This is my first close-up look at a wild caiman and I’m in awe: its eyes, tiny white teeth and tough skin are beautiful and detailed. These animals reached evolutionary perfection millions of years ago and their unchanged shape since the time of dinosaurs reflects this.
24. Why does the author consider the boat trip in the jungle a luxury?
A. The jungle tour reveals precious species.
B. He enjoys the great facilities on the boat.
C. It provides a rare relief in the harsh jungle.
D. The boat is the only way to reach caimans.
25. How do the others of the team react to nearly hitting the log in the water?
A. They treat it calmly without surprise.
B. They remind Pipi of potential threats.
C. They briefly pause for damage check.
D. They panic and suspend their journey.
26. Why does the author mention his 2017 visit to Tambopata?
A. To highlight the engaging biodiversity there.
B. To popularize Tambopata’s tourism industry.
C. To emphasize his role change over the years.
D. To show the motivation for his current work.
27. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. A Researcher’s Unforgettable Jungle Adventure.
B. To Study Caimans for Conservation, Catch One First!
C. Nighttime Encounter: A Thrilling Battle with Caimans!
D. Living Fossils: The Caiman’s Evolutionary Importance.
C
I was in a meeting, and my phone lit up with endless notifications (消息提示). “Is it urgent news? A friend’s engagement? A crisis?” The fear of missing out or otherwise appearing irresponsible in work tore me apart... You must have been there too.
A Stylist research reveals 50% of British adults struggle to keep up with rapid group chats, with the average person involved in 83 of them. It’s a clear sign that our lives are more connected than ever, yet often feel emotionally empty. But why exactly do they have the potential to fuel such negative emotions?
For most, even if they choose to go against the pressure to stay online all the time, skipping chats means facing a great number of unread messages later, which only poses greater stress to catch up.
Besides, there’s a lack of real connection. “Group chats can make us feel like we’re surrounded by people, yet still somehow on the outside,” says psychologist Abby Rawlinson. If everyone’s chatting and you’re not part of the flow — or your message gets no replies — it can stir up that quiet ache of invisibility. Scientists have found that social rejection, even in digital form, activates the same brain regions as physical pain does, thus causing stress and despair.
“The emotional aspect of group interactions is subtle and often unspoken, which shapes how we feel we are seen, included and valued,” says Rawlinson. Over time, these patterns start to mirror real-life social hierarchy (等级制度) — even if no one’s doing it consciously.
This all rings true. But instead of falling into a rabbit hole where my message goes unanswered in a group chat and I wonder if I’m the problem, blaming myself for it, I mentally put myself in others’ shoes and think: If I don’t respond for a while, will they be mad? Probably not. I remind myself that group chats are just a tool that helps us stay in touch.
28. Why does the author mention her meeting experience?
A. To present a common dilemma. B. To highlight her popularity.
C. To warn against improper use of phones. D. To indicate her responsibility for work.
29. What is a negative effect of unanswered messages?
A. They mean more unread messages. B. They lead to a feeling of being ignored.
C. They result in unfair social ranks. D. They remind people of physical pain.
30. What does the underlined phrase “a rabbit hole” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. The tendency for self-criticism. B. The pressure to stay constantly online.
C. The fear of missing out in group chats. D. The urge to endlessly check notifications.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The popularity of group chats. B. Ways to improve group chats.
C. The emotional cost of group chats. D. Social inequality revealed in group chats.
D
There has been growing concern about “digital dementia” — the idea that excessive reliance on smartphones and the internet harms cognitive (认知的) abilities. However, recent research suggests that for adults over 50, these technologies may actually have the opposite effect. A comprehensive analysis of nearly 60 studies involving 410,000 older adults found that those who frequently used smartphones, computers, and the internet were less likely to experience cognitive decline compared to those who used them less.
Jared Benge and his colleague Michael Scullin at Baylor University in Texas searched the literature for studies involving the use of digital technologies in people over 50. The team focused on daily experience of dealing with digital technologies, and excluded ones focusing on gaming or brain training. This left 57 studies, most of which were done in Europe or North America, but there were papers from all around the world, says Benge. “And the effects seem to be fairly consistent.”
Three key mechanisms that explain this effect, says Benge. First, digital activities are more cognitively engaging than passive ones like watching TV. Second, digital technology facilitates social connections, for instance, video calls. Third, digital tools like GPS navigation help older adults maintain independence for longer, ensuring they don’t get lost even if their way-finding abilities decline, for example.
The main weakness is that the studies in the analysis relied on people self-reporting how much they used smartphones, computers or the internet. In the future, technologies such as screen-time monitoring could provide objective measures. Benge also points out that the people in these studies didn’t have smartphones or internet access as children. “Does this play out for digital natives? This is a snapshot that’s encouraging, but the story is not done being told.”
That said, while the results of the meta-analysis are inconclusive, they suggest that long-term technology use can be beneficial for the brain and cognition, says neuroscientist Dean Burnett. “This clearly challenges the common quick judgment that ‘technology equals bad’ in terms of brain and mental health.”
32. What is the main finding of the recent research?
A. Smartphone use leads to memory loss in seniors.
B. Internet browsing prevents all forms of dementia.
C. Regular tech use shows cognitive benefits for the elderly.
D. Video games are better than social media for brain health.
33. What was the main focus of the studies included in the research?
A. Social media habits in teenagers. B. Daily use of digital technologies.
C. Digital programs for brain training. D. Digital activities in western countries.
34.How might digital technology help older adults stay independent according to Benge?
A. By encouraging more self reporting. B. By giving directions and locations.
C. By discouraging social interactions. D. By doing all their daily tasks automatically.
35. What is Dean Burnett’s attitude toward the research findings?
A. Dismissive. B. Uncertain. C. Supportive. D. Critical.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
My dad, Sam Donald, only had a junior high school education. He was a man of few words, a quiet observer navigating my world of textbooks and school events, never quite grasping their rules. From a very young age, he started working on construction sites and sent most of what he earned back home to help pay family expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a construction worker, and I thought that I would surpass anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
The summer after graduation, I spent my days playing basketball, swimming, or playing video games with friends. In the evenings, I scrolled through social media or practiced my guitar.
When a family friend who managed a construction site offered me temporary work that summer, I took it. He explained our basic task — sorting materials and cleaning up debris. The machinery roared to life and we began, moving through the site looking for scraps to clear away. After a short while, the foreman (领班) stopped and pointed at some tangled rebar (钢筋) we had missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but I soon learned to identify different materials: reinforcing bars, electrical wires, PVC pipes, and the most stubborn of all, the concrete chunks that needed breaking up. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would be.
At home, my dad simply remarked, “Working means you’re starting to grow up. It’s good that you can help out at home now.” His calm statement suddenly made me aware that the money I earned might not be entirely for my own use.
My job lasted roughly two weeks. When the foreman mentioned there could be more work ahead, I declined without hesitation. In my mind, it just didn’t seem right that the money I worked for wasn’t completely mine to decide how to spend.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;

Payday finally arrived.

【原文】W: My guest today is the potter Mark Phillips, whose first exhibition opens in the Karlah Gallery on Friday. I understand you’ve only been a potter for four years?
M: Yes, this is something fairly new for me. Actually, pottery runs in the family. My mother is a potter, and when I was younger, I used to watch her in her studio. I just remember thinking, how on earth could I ever reach that standard?
W: So what made you take up pottery?
M: I was 40 years old with my own computer company that I’d set up when I left school, and I was feeling a bit tired of the same routine. And I reasoned with myself that the artistic side of me had been buried for quite long enough.
W: So you became a student again?
M: I did. My brain was still working, obviously, but it was my body that was being exercised. That was a challenge for me after sitting at a computer for years. Other young students might be surprised to see this older man full of enthusiasm.
W: What will you be doing after this exhibition?
M: I’m eager to make more pots. Big pots are what I want to make. Also, the gallery tells me pots in bright colors are welcomed. But that’s more my mother’s thing because it’s complicated.

【原文】 M: Well, now let me tell you how I came to be a book blogger. To support my wife’s career, in 2014 I decided to leave my job and become a stay-at-home dad. That same year, I launched my writing blog to record my journey into fiction writing.
My introduction to book blogging came through Kelly Lacey of Love Books Group, who organized a blog tour for my first novel. This was a lovely experience where people who were passionate about reading read and talked about my novel! It seemed like such a lovely community that I wanted to be part of it. In early 2020, I joined Anne Cater’s book connectors group.
On my blog, I focus on two types of posts: in-depth reflections on the nature of writing and honest book reviews. I try to be positive but will also point out some concerns or questions about the book — no matter who the writer is — because I feel the review is more useful this way. If I really don’t like the book, I won’t publish a review.
Ever since I started book blogging, I’ve been reading much more. Also, book blogging has helped deepen my appreciation of literature, doubling the joy of reading while sharpening my writing skills.

A Moment of Happiness
During the winter vacation, my happiest moment came on a quiet evening when my whole family gathered to make dumplings together. My mother prepared the dough, my father mixed the filling, and I clumsily tried to wrap the dumplings. Laughter filled the kitchen as my dumplings turned out in all sorts of funny shapes. Finally, when we sat down to enjoy our homemade dumplings, the warmth from the steaming bowls seemed to melt away the cold outside.
This simple moment made me realize that happiness does not lie in grand events or expensive gifts. It exists in ordinary moments spent with loved ones, in shared laughter, and in the warmth of home. Even the most imperfect dumplings tasted perfect because they were made together. That evening, I understood that the truest happiness is often found in life’s simplest and quietest moments.

Payday finally arrived. Although the job was very tiring, I was very happy in my heart for I got something from my work. The toil of labor was forgotten for the time being. I thought I should have my own money and planned how to spend it. “How much money have you earned?” Dad asked. I was surprised, reluctant to say my income. The next morning, my dad’s livestock truck started running. I saw my father’s hard-working figure and thought of his words “A job’s a big step to growing up”.
I understood immediately what my parents were worried about. They were worried that I was too selfish to give. I realized that my labor was very hard, but my growth and our whole family had been depending on the hard work of my parents! Dad never complained about unfairness! He even seemed to think that was fair. I thought, “I’ve only worked for two weeks, but how many years my father has worked!” In the evening, Dad came back. I proudly took out my own money and handed it to Dad.
