Bi Sheng was a common printer in the Song Dynasty. About a thousand years ago books were printed from whole wooden blocks. Carving (雕刻) one block took weeks, and a single mistake could ruin (毁掉) the whole block. Bi Sheng wanted a faster and cheaper way.

Around 1041 he came up with a new idea. He cut single Chinese characters on small pieces of clay (黏土), so each character became a small block. The blocks were baked hard in a fire. When a page was to be printed, the blocks were set in an iron frame and pressed flat. After printing, the blocks were taken apart and could be used again.

Bi Sheng's movable type (活字) was one of the greatest inventions in Chinese history. His idea later travelled to other countries. Today, although we print with machines and computers, the idea behind movable type is still the same: make one piece for one character, then use the pieces again and again.

( )28. Why was movable type better than whole blocks?

B

Orville and Wilbur Wright ran a small bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio. They were not scientists and they never went to university, but they loved machines and they read everything they could find about flight.

On 17 December 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, their plane, the Flyer, was lifted into the cold wind. The first flight lasted only twelve seconds and covered about 120 feet — shorter than a modern plane is long. But it was the first time in history that a machine carrying a man had flown under its own power.

The brothers did not stop there. By 1905 they had built an airplane that could fly for more than half an hour. Their success was built on hundreds of tests, careful notes and one simple idea: try, fail, learn, and try again.

( )31. What did the Wright brothers do before they built planes?

A. They were teachers. B. They ran a bicycle shop. C. They worked in a factory. D. They were doctors.

( )32. When did the first flight take place?

( )33. How long did the first flight last?

A. Twelve minutes. B. Half an hour. C. One hour. D. Twelve seconds.

( )34. What was the brothers' success built on?

A. Luck. B. Money. C. Hundreds of tests and careful notes. D. Help from scientists.

( )35. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The Wright brothers went to university. B. The first flight lasted half an hour. C. The Flyer was heavier than modern planes. D. By 1905 their plane could fly over half an hour.
