Transitioning from junior high to senior high is a real challenge for him, and the first week was somewhat confusing. First, he had to carefully decide on his courses. With the school adviser’s help, he chose maths, English, chemistry, world history, and Chinese. He knows Chinese is tough but hopes to be fluent by graduation. His adviser also recommended he signs up for advanced literature since he loves and excels at English. Then, he needed to pick extra-curricular activities. He tried to join the school football team, but the coach said he didn’t play well enough. Though unhappy, he won’t quit and plans to improve on his own to make the team next year. Instead, he joined a volunteer club. Every Wednesday, they work at a soup kitchen, handing out food to homeless people in the community. Adam realizes he must study harder as a senior high student and get used to more duties. He’s a bit anxious about keeping up with classmates in advanced courses and adapting to all the homework. Still, he’s happy to be there. He knows studying hard isn’t always fun, but it will prepare him well for university or whatever comes in the future. 24. What did the school adviser help Adam do? C Instant noodles are a favorite quick meal when people don’t want to cook. Picture eating them while watching TV on a stormy night — pure comfort! But many believe they’re just junk food that harms health. The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how you prepare them. The main issue isn’t the noodles themselves, but the common way people make them: pouring boiling water over dried noodles and adding all the salty seasoning packets. These flavor packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives (人工添加剂), making this version unbalanced and unhealthy. Actually, plain instant noodles aren’t terrible. They’re fried during production (which adds some oil and calories), but they fill you up well and provide quick energy when you’re hungry. To make them healthier, cook them properly: boil the noodles first, drain excess starchy (含有淀粉的) water, then use fresh water or broth (肉汤). Crucially, use only half the seasoning packet to reduce salt. Add vegetables like spinach or carrots and protein like an egg or tofu while cooking. This boosts vitamins and protein while cutting sodium (钠). This transforms them into a balanced meal! So, are instant noodles junk food? If prepared lazily with all the seasoning and no extras, yes. But when cooked with less seasoning plus veggies and protein, they become a decent occasional meal. Remember: the secret is variety. Enjoy them once or twice a week as part of a diverse diet, and they won’t harm your health. They’re far less scary than people think — just upgrade your cooking method! 28.What determines if instant noodles are unhealthy? A.Their quick cooking time. B.The preparation method C.The time of eating. D.The junk food label. 29.What is the major cause of unhealthy instant noodles? A.The dried noodles. B.Using boiling water. C.The flavor packets. D.People avoiding cooking. 30.What is the main purpose of the third paragraph? A.Warn about health dangers. B.Give cooking instructions. C.Argue noodles are harmless. D.List harmful additives. 31.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.Instant Noodles are hard to cook. B.Instant Noodles are a perfect meal. C.The less instant noodles, the healthier. D.Instant Noodles are not all waste. D With an increasing demand and numerous challenges concerning traditional coffee agriculture, there is a pressing need for alternative ways of producing coffee. Due to the high demand for coffee, more land is required, leading to deforestation (滥伐森林) — particularly in sensitive areas of rainforest. VTT is developing coffee production through plant cells in its laboratory in Finland. “This project has been part of our overall job to look for the environmentally friendly biotechnological solutions to daily foods that are conventionally produced by agriculture. For this, we use many different hosts, such as microbes (微生物) and plant cells,” says research team leader, Dr Heiko Rischer from VTT. The work started by initiating (创立) coffee cell cultures and establishing respective cell lines. In terms of smell and taste, the trained sensory panel and analytical examination found nothing divergent when comparing the lab’s coffee to ordinary coffee. “Our coffee is so real that it is hard to tell it from the conventional one. Coffee making is an art and involves many processes. Our work provides the basis for such work,” says Rischer. The experience of drinking the very first cup was exciting. Rischer estimates expanding their production is still years away. Growing plant cells requires specific expertise when it is time to improve the process. And the coffee produced in lab conditions should first be approved as Novel Food by the European Commission(委员会) before being marketed. “Therefore, that’s what we need to devote ourselves to next in the project,” says Rischer. “That said, we have proved that coffee produced in our lab can be real.” The true impact of the project will happen through companies that are willing to rethink food material production and start driving commercial applications. VTT supports large enterprises and small companies in adopting opportunities in their product development. 32. What is the mission of VTT? A. Finding alternatives to coffee. B. Developing biotechnology in agriculture. C. Achieving sustainable food production. D . Protecting the areas of rainforest. 33. What does the underlined word “divergent” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Remarkable. B. Different. C. Original. D. Unpleasant. 34. What may the project focus on in the following stage? A. Gaining official approval. B. Improving the flavour. C. Increasing the production. D. Cooperating with companies. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Agriculture Is Undergoing a Transformation B. Lab-grown Coffee Became a Reality C. Coffee Production Is Facing Challenges D. The park had been forgotten for years — its grass covered in plastic bottles, food wrappers, and tall, wild weeds. Excited to help, I arrived early with gloves and a trash picker, ready to work. The morning was bright and warm, but the day soon became a lesson in life. By midday, our team had collected bags of trash, and the park looked slightly better. But dark clouds began to fill the sky. Moments later, heavy rain started pouring down. The dirt paths turned into slippery mud, and my trash bag suddenly broke, spilling all the garbage I had picked up. Cold water soaked through my shoes, and the wind blew so hard that I could barely keep my eyes open. I felt angry and disappointed, thinking all my hard work was ruined. Seeking shelter under a tree, I watched other volunteers hurry to nearby buildings. My hands hurt from holding the picker, and my wet clothes felt heavy and uncomfortable. The happy energy I felt earlier was gone. “Why did I choose to do this?” I whispered to myself, wiping rainwater off my face. The park now looked worse than before — muddy, flooded, and full of scattered trash. It seemed impossible to fix. Just then, I noticed an elderly man standing far across the field. He was alone in the rain, carefully tying his broken trash bag with a piece of rope. His movements were slow but steady. Instead of giving up, he kept picking up litter, one piece at a time. Even from a distance, I could see his determination. The wind howled, and rain continued to fall, but the old man didn’t move from his spot. He bent down again and again, filling his bag with soggy paper and plastic. finish      steady      excite      disappoint      shelter      ruin happy      determine      tear      sudden      sign      comfortable I 66 Green Earth environmental activity last summer.
