A 10-year-old girl Callie lived with her parents and older brother, Ben, on a quiet farm. Though she was small and thin, she loved helping with housework, especially feeding the horses in their big barn (畜棚). One side of the barn housed the horse stalls (马厩), while the other side was piled with hay bales (干草) for feeding.
One afternoon, Callie went into the barn to feed the horses. As she walked towards the tall stacks of hay. She suddenly stopped. A tiny, weak sound came through the dusty air. Meow... meow...
Her heart jumped. A kitten must be trapped in the hay! Breathing hard, she ran back to find Ben and her father. “Dad! Ben! Come quick! A kitten is stuck in the hay!” she called urgently. Ben sighed, putting down his tools. Her father looked doubtful. “Probably just the wind, Callie,” he said gently. But they followed her to the barn.
They stood quietly near the hay stacks, listening. The barn was silent. “Hear anything?” Ben asked. Their father shook his head. “Nothing, sweetheart. Maybe it was just a mouse. Don’t worry about it.” Disappointed, Callie watched them leave.
After dinner, Callie slipped back to the barn. She stood still, listening attentively. And there it was again! Meow... meow... Weaker now, but clear. She raced back to the house. Her father was watching TV. “Dad, please!” she begged. “I heard it again! It is a kitten! Please, just come and check one more time?” He looked unwilling but saw the real worry in her eyes. “Alright, one last look.” He returned a few minutes later, “Callie, I listened hard. All I heard was an owl outside. No kitten. Try not to worry.” He gave her a tired smile. “Thanks for checking, Dad.” Callie whispered, though she still felt uneasy.
That night, Callie woke up suddenly. The weak cries filled her mind. She couldn’t rest. Quietly, she put on her coat, took a flashlight and slipped out. Inside the barn, near the hay stacks, Callie held her breath, listening with full attention. Then, it came: Meow... meow... Her flashlight beam swept across the bales. There! Click for a Friend?
How would you feel if moving to a new town meant losing track of your friends? What if the only way of getting news from faraway friends was writing letters? This was how things worked not so very long ago. Thanks to advances in technology, how we make friends and communicate with them has changed significantly.
Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with the people that we want to remain friends with. Social media tools let us see what our friends are up to and maintain friendships without missing a beat.
The digital age also enables us to find people who share our interests, such as collecting model cars or playing an unusual instrument. Whatever our hobbies, the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the other side of the world.
But when you “friend” people online, does this mean that they really are your friends?
It depends.
If people always exchange true personal information online, then yes, these friendships can be real and meaningful. But we need to keep in mind that what we see on social media is often not the whole truth about a person.
On social media sites, people tend to post only good things that make them appear happy and friendly. But smiling photos can hide real problems. Remember the saying: on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog. A young person could be old; a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing our information with criminals.
But this doesn’t mean we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Although technology has changed the way we are connected, the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends remain the same. As Aristotle said, no one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all other goods.

On a bright and sunny day, Ariel Rojas set off on her exciting adventure of hiking and bird-watching at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York. Little did she know that she would run into something completely unusual the day.
Just a mile into her walk, her eyes were drawn to a sight near the water’s edge. There lay a magnificent female mute swan. Rojas, who has experience working at the Wild Bird Fund rehab center in Manhattan, was well aware that mute swans could be quite aggressive. However, this particular swan was different. It remained still and made no move or attempt to attack as she drew closer. It was clear to her that there was something wrong with the swan and that it was in need of medical help.
Rojas took immediate action. She slowly and tenderly covered the swan’s head with her jacket, hoping to keep it calm. Then, with utmost care, she picked the heavy bird up, holding it softly in her arms. The next challenge was discouraging. The rehab center was across the East River, on the other side of town. How could she carry such a huge swan out of here on her own? The thought alone almost made her desperate.
Just when hope seemed to grow weaker, a man cycling by appeared at the end of the road and got nearer and nearer. There on the back seat of his bike was fixed a big-sized backpack. Rojas made two steps forward with efforts, “Help!” After several good glances at Rojas, the man stopped in front of her. (25-26高一上·四川成都列五中学·期中)I had always been careful around Max. He was the quiet kid in our class and he hardly spoke to anyone. When he did, his words were rudely brief and often misunderstood. Rumors (谣言) about him spread like wildfire — some said he got into fights after school, others claimed he had once stolen a teacher’s wallet. I didn’t know if any of them was true, but I stayed away, just like everyone else.
Then one Friday morning, Max didn’t show up to class. Rumors about his absence started flying. “He got suspended (停课),” whispered a girl next to me. “I heard he struck a guy outside the library.” I wasn’t surprised, and nodded in agreement.
Later that day, I went to enjoy the first warm day of spring at the park where I saw Max sitting alone on the swings. His usual defensive expression was gone, and replaced by something I hadn’t expected: sadness. I walked over with curiosity, noticing a wrinkled piece of paper in his hand.
“What’s that? ” I asked. At first, he seemed unsure. Then, he handed it to me. It was a hospital form and the name on it was his younger sister’s. I looked at him, confused.
“She’s been sick for months, ” Max explained, his voice barely heard. “Yesterday was bad. My mom couldn’t leave work, so I stayed at the hospital and looked after her all night. ”
It hit me then how wrong we had all been about Max. The tough outward appearance, the distance—he wasn’t trying to push people away. He was carrying a weight none of us understood.

“Just wait and see!” A big smile spread across his face.

根据第一段第二句话“She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.
根据第一段第三句话“She couldn’t help weeping (哭泣) sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother.
根据第一段第四句“Jenny wandered aimlessly in the street for hours and she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her.
根据第一段第四句“Jenny wandered aimlessly in the street for hours and she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her.
根据第一段第四句“Jenny wandered aimlessly in the street for hours and she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her.
根据原文“‘That’s nothing. I’ll treat you, ’ said the man.
根据倒数第二段第一句“‘Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness! ’ said Jenny as she wiped her tears.
根据倒数第二段第一句“‘Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness! ’ said Jenny as she wiped her tears.
根据倒数第二段最后两句话“She showed no care for me. She is so merciless (无情的) compared to a stranger!
根据倒数第二段最后两句话“She showed no care for me. She is so merciless (无情的) compared to a stranger! 故填care about。

根据第一段第二句和第三句话“She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping (哭泣) sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother. Jenny felt angry and sorrowful because she quarreled with her mother.
根据最后一段最后三句“ But it is your mother who has raised you since you were baby. Can you remember the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her? Jenny would come back home, make an apology to her mother for her impulsion to leave home and try to compromise. Jenny would understand her mother better and try to deal with family conflicts in a better way.

There! Near the bottom of a tall stack, she spotted a tiny movement between two big bales. She rushed over and pushed the bales again, but they wouldn’t move. “I have no choice but to get help!” Callie thought to herself.

根据文中第二段“One afternoon, Callie went into the barn to feed the horses. As she walked towards the tall stacks of hay. She suddenly stopped. A tiny, weak sound came through the dusty air.
Ben! Come quick! A kitten is stuck in the hay!” she called urgently.(“爸爸!
“I heard it again! It is a kitten! Please, just come and check one more time?”(“爸爸,求你了!”

根据文中第五段“He returned a few minutes later, “Callie, I listened hard. All I heard was an owl outside. No kitten.
Callie whispered, though she still felt uneasy.(“谢谢你去检查,爸爸。”

根据文中第六段““I have no choice but to get help!” Callie thought to herself.(“我别无选择,只能去求助!”

She was determined, persistent, kind, careful, or an animal lover.

With a concerned expression shifted from a confused one he asked “What’s wrong with the swan?” Rojas made a brief explanation as soon as she could, while the man listened attentively, his eyes fixed on the swan in her arms.

根据第一段中“On a bright and sunny day, Ariel Rojas set off on her exciting adventure of hiking and bird-watching at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York.
根据第一段中“Little did she know that this day would be filled with an extraordinary encounter.
根据第二段中“It remained still and made no move or attempt to attack as she drew closer. 故填approached/was approaching。
根据第二段中“It was clear to her that there was something wrong with the swan and that it was in need of medical help.
根据第三段中“Then, with utmost care, she picked the heavy bird up, holding it softly in her arms.
根据第三段中“How could she carry such a huge swan out of here on her own? The thought alone seemed almost impossible.
根据第四段“Just when hope seemed to grow weaker, a man cycling by appeared at the end of the road and got nearer and nearer.(就在希望似乎愈发渺茫之时,一个骑着自行车经过的人出现在了路的尽头,并且越走越近了)”可知,罗哈斯向刚刚路过的一位骑自行车的人求助,并向他详细说明了情况。
根据第四段中“After several good glances at Rojas, the cyclist stopped in front of her, his expression having shifted from confusion to concern, “What’s wrong with the swan?”(仔细看了Rojas几眼后,骑行者停在了她面前,他的表情从困惑变成了担心:“天鹅怎么了?”)”
根据第三段中“The next challenge was discouraging. The rehab center was across the East River, on the other side of town. How could she carry such a huge swan out of here on her own? She decided to send the mute swan to the rehab center for medical help, but it was too heavy for her to carry.
根据第四段中“Just when hope seemed to grow weak, a cyclist appeared at the end of the road and got nearer and nearer. There on the back seat of his bike was fixed a big-sized backpack. He would give his bike/backpack to Rojas for her to transport the swan. /He would accompany Rojas to the rehab center with his bike carrying the mute swan.
根据第四段中“Rojas made a brief explanation as soon as she could, while the cyclist listened attentively, his eyes fixed on the swan in her arms. Rojas would set the mute swan free after it got medical treatment in time and came back to life soon.

The next Monday, Max returned, but rumors remained. Someone even started calling him “Mad Max”. I couldn’t stand it anymore.

There were two neighbors living next to each other. One of them was a retired (退休的) teacher and the other was an insurance agent (保险代理人) who had a lot of interest in technology. Both of them had planted different plants in their gardens. The retired teacher was giving a small amount of water to his plants and didn’t always give full attention to them, while the other neighbor interested in technology, had given a lot of water to his plants and looked after them too well.
The retired teacher’s plants were simple but looked good. The insurance agent’s plants were much fuller and greener. One day, during the night, there was a heavy rain and a wind due to a minor storm. Next morning, both of the neighbors came out to see the loss to their gardens. The neighbor who was an insurance agent saw that his plants came off from the roots (根) and were totally destroyed. But, the retired teacher’s plants were not harmed at all and were standing strongly.
The insurance agent neighbor was surprised to see it and he went to the retired teacher and asked, “We both grew the same plants together, I actually looked after my plants better than you did for yours, and even gave them more water. Still, my plants came off from the roots, while yours didn’t. How is that possible?”
The retired teacher smiled and said, “You gave your plants more attention and water, but because of that they didn’t need to work themselves for it. You made it easy for them. While I gave them just an adequate amount of water and let their roots search for more. And, because of that, their roots went deeper and that made their position stronger. That is why my plants lived”.

根据首段首句“There were two neighbors living next to each other.”
根据首段“Both of them had planted different plants in their gardens.”
根据首段“The retired teacher was giving a small amount of water to his plants and didn’t always give full attention to them, while the other neighbor... had given a lot of water to his plants and looked after them too well.”
根据第二段对两人植物的对比“The retired teacher’s plants were simple but looked good. The insurance agent’s plants were much fuller and greener.”
根据第二段“there was a heavy rain and a wind due to a minor storm”可知,此处指“暴风雨”,应用名词storm。
根据第二段“his plants came off from the roots (根) and were totally destroyed”可知,植物是“被从土里拔出来”,应用pull的被动语态be pulled,结合时态(一般过去时)和主语 plants(复数),故填were pulled。
根据第二段“the retired teacher’s plants were not harmed at all and were standing strongly”可知,老师的植物的“坚韧的、完好的”,应用形容词strong,与sound(健康的)构成并列结构。
根据第三段代理人的提问“We both grew the same plants together... How is that possible?”
根据第四段老师的解释 “You gave your plants more attention and water”可知,这是老师的“推测、假定”,应用名词assumption,空前有定冠词the,用单数形式。
根据文章首段核心对比信息 “The retired teacher was giving a small amount of water to his plants and didn’t always give full attention to them, while the other neighbor interested in technology, had given a lot of water to his plants and looked after them too well. The retired teacher gave his plants less water and care, while the insurance agent gave his plants too much water and attention.
通读全文,尤其最后一段“The retired teacher smiled and said, “You gave your plants more attention and water, but because of that they didn’t need to work themselves for it. You made it easy for them. While I gave them just an adequate amount of water and let their roots search for more. And, because of that, their roots went deeper and that made their position stronger. That is why my plants lived”. Too much help can make one weak. It’s better to let people (or plants) grow stronger by facing challenges themselves.

In the town of Willowbrook, young Sarah was in a state of great excitement. Her school was putting on its annual play, and she had been offered a principal role. The school hall had been abuzz for weeks with rehearsals (彩排), prop preparations, and the students practicing their lines. Sarah had spent countless hours rehearsing, wanting to get every word and movement absolutely right.
However, her expectation was a growing sadness. Sarah’s dad, Mr. Thompson, worked as an engineer in a big city, and his job often kept him away from home for a long time, which meant he frequently missed out on most of the special moments in Sarah’s life. This play seemed to be another addition to that growing list. He had a vital business meeting on the same day, and Sarah, although understanding, couldn’t help feeling disappointed. Her classmates talked excitedly about their families coming to watch, increasing her sense of loss.
It was bright and sunny on the day of the play. The school’s hall was noisy with students. Students in costumes rushed about, teachers gave last-minute instructions, and the air was thick with anticipation. Sarah peeped (偷看) out from behind the curtains and saw the hall filling up with eager parents, siblings, and friends. Every seat was taken, except one — her dad’s.
The play started on time with Sarah and her classmates’ performance being the first. Sarah played her part with a mix of excitement and longing, wishing her dad could see her shine.
Halfway through, the host called for a surprise guest to enter. He described him as a “mysterious stranger” whose brief appearance would provide a turning point in the plot.
