An international team of physicists is making remarkable progress in understanding
how black holes attract surrounding material and release enormous amounts of energy into
space.Using a unique balloon-borne telescope called XL-Calibur,scientists recently
observed Cygnus X-1,a stellar-mass black hole located approximately 7,000 light-years away
in our galaxy. This system consists of a black hole orbiting a massive blue super-giant star,
with the black hole's powerful gravity steadily pulling material from its companion.
XL-Calibur specializes in measuring the polarization (of X-ray light,a property
that describes the specific direction of light waves as they travel through space."Polariza-
tion is particularly useful for learning about the processes occurring around black holes
when direct imaging isn't possible from Earth, explained Ephraim Gau,a graduate
student researcher involved in the project.By analyzing how light becomes polarized,
researchers can obtain crucial information about the geometry and behavior of the superhea-
ted gas and debris spinning around black holes at nearly light speed.
The team's latest findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal, represent the
most accurate measurement to date of hard X-ray polarization from Cygnus X-1.These
results were gathered during XL-Calibur's successful July 2024 balloon flight from Sweden
to Canada, which also collected valuable data from the Crab pulsar, one of the brightest X-
ray sources in the sky.The mission established several technical milestones, demonstrating
the telescope's design and capabilities.
Looking ahead, researchers plan to launch XL-Calibur again from Antarctica in 2027
to study additional black holes and neutron stars."Combined with data from NASA
satellites such as IXPE,we may soon have sufficient information to solve longstanding
questions about black hole physics within the next few years, said Henri C.Krawczynski,
the project's primary investigator. This ambitious research program represents a significant
step toward comprehending how matter behaves under the most extreme gravitational
conditions in the universe.
英语试题(十一)第3页(共8页)
The XL-Calibur collaboration brings together institutions from the United States,
Japan, and Sweden, including Washington University, the University of New Hampshire,
Osaka University, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, supported by NASA funding
and additional research organizations.

25.Polarization helps scientists understand
A.the age of the black hole
B.the weight of the black hole
C.the distance of the black hole
D.the material around the black hole
26.What is the team's future plan?
A.To launch a larger telescope.
B.To analyze data from the Crab pulsar.
C.To conduct flights from Sweden again.D.To observe more black holes and stars.
27.What is key to solving black hole questions?
A.The 2024 balloon flight's success.

Although it is a business not many are aware of,sidewalk robots are set to become an
industry with annual sales of 1bn within a decade, reckons IDTechEx,a British firm of
analysts.These four-or six-wheeled autonomous machines,usually the size of a suitcase,
are already delivering groceries and other goods in America,China and Europe.
That puts them ahead of many driverless cars, vans and lorries being developed.
Those bigger vehicles are held back not by technology but regulation, says Zehao Li of
IDTechEx.So having a "safety driver"on board ready to take over if there is a problem,
which is hardly labor-saving.
For these larger contraptions regulators want to see safety systems thoroughly
proved.But there are legal hurdles,too.In January Britain's Law Commission,which
reviews legislation, recommended that it should not be the person in the driver's seat who
faces prosecution if a vehicle in autonomous mode crashes, but the manufacturer or body
that sought approval for its use.
Meanwhile, sidewalk robots are getting on with the job.Among them,Starship Tech-
nologies, based in San Francisco, reckons it has already clocked up more than 2,500,000
deliveries with bots in a number of cities, university campuses and business parks in
Europe and America.Amazon is carrying out trials with a similar sort of machine it calls
Scout.Kiwibot,a Colombian startup,is making sidewalk deliveries in California.
Typically, these robots carry a few bags of groceries using a variety of sensors,inclu-
ding cameras, radar and GPS to navigate and avoid obstacles and people.Their progress
can be monitored on a phone app, which also unlocks them for goods to be retrieved. As
they are small move slowly(Starship's bots might reach a heady 6kph)and are "telemoni-
tored"by people in a control room who can take over, authorities seem more willing to give
them a green light.
Such robots are also becoming more autonomous. In January Serve Robotics, another
San Franciscan firm whose backers include Uber,a ride-hailing giant, said it had deployed
a new sidewalk bot with "level 4"autonomy,which means it can operate without telemoni-
toring in some predesignated areas.
Robotic versions which operate on roads but have no driver's cab are also appearing.
Nuro,a Silicon Valley firm, makes one about the size of a small car that can carry 24 bags
of groceries. It has chilled and heated compartments for food and drinks.Further along the
road in earning their keep, these delivery bots are helping to pave the way for the time
when bigger autonomous vehicles can join them.
英语试题(十一)第4页(共8页)
28.What can we learn from Paragraph One?
A.Sidewalk robots are portable like a suitcase.
B.In the past decade,1bn dollars have been invested into industry.
C.The delivery industries of the US,China and Europe are dependent on sidewalk
robots.
D.The industry of sidewalk robot is expanding unknowingly.
29.According to the passage, who should be responsible for automatic driving car acci-
dents?
A.Safety drivers seated in the driver's seat.
B.Every passenger except the driver.
C.Organizations supportive of autonomous mode.
D.Manufacturers and bodies seeking approval for using safety drivers.
30.What does the underlined phrase "clocked up"in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Reached.
B.Designed.
C.Bought.
D.Invented.
31.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Amazon is using Scout to deliver groceries for people.
B.If groceries are wrongly delivered, robots can take them back.
C.Some robots may deliver groceries with no one telemonitoring them.
D.Both cold and hot food can be preserved inside a sidewalk robot developed by Nuro.

For anyone trying to lose weight, there's a truth we can all universally acknowledge
that better health is often positioned as a numbers game.Hit the right number, and all
your health problems will magically resolve,so the logic goes.Yet increasingly, science is
revealing that losing weight may not be a silver bullet after all.In a mouse study published
in the journal Science, looking specifically at an inflammatory()eye condition linked
to obesity called macular degeneration(黄斑退化),researchers found the struggle for
better health doesn't necessarily begin and end with weight loss.
Researchers conducted experiments on mice that were fed a high-fat diet for 11 weeks,
making them gain weight. The mice were then put on a diet of low-fat food for 9 weeks,
making them lose weight.Another group of mice only ate the low-fat diet as a control.
Researchers shot lasers into the eyes of both the yo-yo dieter mice and the control mice to
encourage atypical blood vessel(非典型性血管)growth,a mark of macular degeneration.
Among the mice that had gained and then lost weight, there was about 40 percent
more atypical blood vessel growth than their stable diet peers.Driving the growth appeared
to be macrophages(巨噬细胞).In the yo-yo dieter mice, these cells had been repro
grammed to cause inflammation.Taken together, these cells appeared to have an outsize
role in atypical blood vessel growth in the eyes.Meanwhile,in the mice fed only a low-fat
diet, inflammatory changes were absent. The results suggest that eating a high-fat diet
that causes weight gain, even if followed by weight loss, leaves an inflammatory mark on
mouse macrophages.
The research comes during a period of renewed interest in anti-obesity drugs. But
medicines that help people shed pounds do not treat inflammation linked to a history of
weight gain."How to engage these findings with medicine interventions is a challenge,"
says Bapat,head of the research.
32.Which of the following best explains "a silver bullet"underlined in Paragraph 1?
A.A workable solution.
B.A tough choice.
C.An ultimate objective.
D.A major challenge.
33.How do researchers carry out the experiment?
A.By making comparison.
B.By listing examples.
C.By controlling test methods.
D.By analyzing diet components.
英语试题(十一)第5页(共8页)
34.What can we learn about the research results?
A.Stable dieting drives the growth of macrophages.
B.Reprogrammed cells are to blame for weight gain.
C.Inflammatory changes are caused by the low-fat diet.
D.Losing weight doesn't resolve the inflammation tied to weight gain.
35.What will the research focus on next?
A.Exploring ways of losing weight.
B.Tracking the history of weight loss.
C.Treating obesity-linked inflammation.D.Boosting interest in anti-obesity drugs.

In the fast-paced 2026 workplace, multitasking has become a vital skill for all professionals.
With remote and hybrid work widely popular, people need to handle various duties at the
same time to improve overall productivity. However, human brains cannot truly perform
several tasks at once.36,which may cause low efficiency and more mistakes.
Therefore,it is necessary to master practical methods to manage multiple tasks wisely.
Make a clear work plan
Before starting daily work, make a clear to-do list and rank tasks by importance and
urgency.Always deal with high-priority tasks first.A reasonable plan stops you from
feeling overwhelmed and guides your work in an organized way.37.It can lead to
messy work and endless pressure.
Categorize similar tasks
Switching between different types of tasks increases cognitive pressure and wastes
mental energy.38.For example, finish all email replies at one time or deal with data
entry work in a single period. This simple practice cuts down unnecessary mental shifts
and greatly smooths your daily workflow.
Reduce interruptions effectively
39.You had better set a fixed "do not disturb"period and tell your colleagues
about your working schedule.Meanwhile, keep away from unnecessary social media and
meaningless messages. When distractions are well controlled, you can always keep focused
and guarantee work quality.
40
Many people push themselves to work non-stop to finish more tasks, which finally
leads to burnout.Knowing your limits is essential for long-term career development.
Besides, short and regular breaks can refresh your mind.Simple skills like the Pomodoro tech-
nique can help you balance work and rest, keeping your performance steady all day long.
A.Recognize your own boundaries
B.Prioritize regular breaks between tasks
C.Instead,they merely shift attention quickly
D.Multitasking has long been considered unfavorable
E.To stay efficient, group comparable tasks together
F.A lack of proper arrangements for multitasking has consequences

That night, after a couple of restless hours,Dora woke up suddenly at midnight. She
went to her bathroom.Stepping on the carpet she noticed it was damp.Looking out,she
found that muddy water was inching up the wood-paneled walls! She ran to her father's
bedside."Daddy,Daddy,"she cried,shaking him violently."Wake up.There's water in
the house!”
Barefoot and wearing only shorts,Dykstra walked to the entrance and opened the
door. What he saw shook him wide-awake.Duchess,their dog,was standing just outside
the door, her feet in six inches of water. That meant the roadway, their only means of
escape, was flooded. He hid his anxiety. They climbed up the ladder-like stairs to a loft(
above the living room. From there they could hear the water filling the room below,
creeping(缓慢地行进)toward them.Suddenly the whole house trembled as if struck by an
earthquake. The next instant they found themselves floating, and the wooden house being
做
swept along the river!Terrified that the cabin would sink and take them down with it,
Dykstra decided that they would have to get out.Wrapping his arms tightly round his
daughter,he plunged(猛冲)into the icy water..
The house was behind them now, chasing them through the darkness. Before he could
get out of its path, the house-pushed by the tremendous()power of the water-
pinned him at the trunk. His ribs()were crushed. His left leg was broken. He lost
consciousness. Then the house shifted, releasing him.Dora found herself drifting down-
烯
stream,her unconscious father beside her."Don't die,Daddy!"she cried."Please!"
Perhaps it was the cry of the little girl that stirred Dykstra to consciousness. In the
pale moonlight,Dykstra spotted an island formed by some rubbish that had got caught in
some treetops.Fighting against the current and his pain,he swam toward it.Dora climbed
onto the small pile of timbers()and pulled her father, who was fighting for breath,
from the rushing water onto the timbers. Now,Dora realized,it was up to her to help him.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Just then she was astonished to see a figure appear out of nowhere.
Suddenly a voice from somewhere on the distant hillside broke the darkness.
