Every English learner needs to know how to ask for something in English. There are a number of ways to do this.
If you know someone has something, you can ask for it with a polite question. If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask for something with a yes or no question. Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don’t say “Give me that”, but ask kindly as the following examples, “Do you have a pen I could borrow?” “Is there any wine?” “Did you buy any bread?”
If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with “could”, “may” or “might”. It’s also possible to use “can” in some special situations. In the past, “can” was not used when people asked for something, but meant ability. In the UK, people mainly use “Can you lend me…?” or “Can I have…?” In the US, this is still considered to be wrong and “May I have…?” is preferred (更喜欢).
It’s common to use “Could you lend/hand/give…?” You can also use “May/Can I borrow…?” “Could/Can you lend me…?” “May I have…?” Do not begin a sentence with “please”, but you can add “please” at the end of the sentence to be polite.
36.English learners only have one way to ask for something in English.
37.When asking for something, it’s polite to use direct expressions like “Give me that”.
38.If you don’t know whether someone has something, you can ask a yes or no question.
39.In the past, “can” was used to ask for something.

Youdian Village, which is hundreds of years old, is a beautiful tourist attraction in Jiangxi Province. Visitors can see amazing ancient houses dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Nearby, a clear blue lake offers fantastic views, and visitors can enjoy different lakeside activities on the hillside.
▲ Fallen trees blocked the roads, old houses were in poor condition, and the lake area was just an abandoned open-pit (露天开采的) mine. No plants grew there because of too much mining. “The soil was so poor that even small trees could not grow well,” said Mi Xiulan, a local official.
Things began to change when China started focusing on rural revitalization (乡村振兴). In 2018, a programme saved over 1,000 ancient buildings here. Villager Hu Liang’s ancestral home (祖居) was fixed for free. He now rents (出租) it to a company for 2,000 yuan a year. Since 2023, the local government has been turning the old mine sites into a beautiful lake. Plants are growing around the lake.
The village now has new attractions: meals in ancient houses, an underwater book house, a lakeside cafe, and a traditional Chinese medicine experience centre. Better environment and fun activities had brought over 100,000 tourists by October, 2025.
Now, young people like Hu Liang are returning home. He came back from Xiamen and started working as a village baker, making about 6,000 yuan per month. “I plan to set up my own business here,” he said. The village has a bright future ahead.

Ⅴ. 读写题(本题共分两节,共计15分)
第一节(每空一词,每题1分,共6分)
When I was a kid, my mum liked to make breakfast food for dinner sometimes.
I still remember one night when my mum put a plate of badly burnt (烧焦) bread in front of my dad. I waited to see if anyone would notice it. To my surprise, my dad just took his bread, smiled at my mum and then turned to ask me how my day at school had been. I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him put some butter on that bread. He ate it up as usual, every single bit (小块).
After dinner, my mum said sorry to my dad for burning the bread. And I never forget what he said, “I love burnt bread, dear. It doesn’t matter at all.” Later that night, I asked him if he really liked his bread burnt. He held me in his arms and said, “Lily, your mum worked very hard all day. She’s really tired. And you see a bit of burnt food never hurt anyone!”
Now I know that nobody is perfect. But I’ve learned the importance of understanding each other. This is the key to a happy life. So, don’t get angry about the burnt bread. Just be kind to those around you.

40.In the US, people prefer using “May I have…?” instead of “Can I have…?” when asking for something.

Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds contain healthy fats and vitamin E, which keep your brain healthy as you age. A small handful of them is a great daily snack.
Eggs
Eggs are full of choline (胆碱), which helps your brain make necessary chemicals for memory. They also have B vitamins that are good for your brain.

Fatty Fish
Fatty fish is an excellent source of omega-3 fats, which help brain cells (细胞) communicate better. Research shows that people who eat fatty fish regularly have a lower risk of memory problems.
Blueberries
These small and sweet fruits are rich in antioxidants (抗氧化物). They help protect your brain from damage. Studies suggest blueberries can help you remember things longer.
