The Brush and I
When I was in Grade Seven, I hated writing. My characters were always too big or too small, and my teacher often asked me to write them again.
One winter holiday, my grandpa, a retired Chinese teacher, put an old brush in my hand. "Let's write together," he said. At first, I was impatient. I wanted to finish ten characters in a minute. Grandpa just smiled and wrote one stroke at a time. His characters were not fast, but they were beautiful.
Day after day, we sat at the same table. Grandpa taught me how to hold the brush and how to control my breath. Slowly, I began to enjoy the quiet time. I learned that writing is not a race. Every stroke needs patience, and so does every kind of learning.
When the holiday ended, I wrote a poem for my grandpa. He read it for a long time and said, "This is the best gift I have ever got."
Now I still practise calligraphy every evening. It has become a habit, like brushing my teeth. The brush has taught me something more important than good handwriting: if you take one small step at a time, you will go further than you think.
( ) 19. Why did the writer hate writing at first?
A. He had no time to practise. B. His teacher was too strict.

( ) 22. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to write good Chinese characters.
B. A lesson learned from practising calligraphy.
C. Why Grandpa was a good teacher.
D. How to choose a good brush.

My Best Mistake
Last term, I got 58 in my English exam — my worst score ever. I hid the paper in my desk and told nobody.
Two days later, Miss Wu asked me to stay after class. I thought she would be angry. Instead, she put my paper on the desk and said, "Let's find out what happened together." We read every wrong answer and wrote down the reason beside it. Some mistakes came from new words I had never learned; others came from my carelessness.
"Every mistake is a small map," Miss Wu said. "It shows you the way to your next step." Then she gave me a small notebook and said, "From today, keep a mistake notebook. Write down one mistake a day and try to use the right answer in a sentence."
I thought it was silly at first, but I tried. A month later, I found that I was making the same mistakes less often. When the next exam came, I got 82. I was not the top student, but I had climbed over a wall that I once thought was too high.
Now I know that a low score is not the end of the road. It is just a sign that says: there is still something new to learn.
( ) 23. How did the writer feel after getting 58?
A. Proud. B. Angry with the teacher.
C. Ashamed and upset. D. Happy and relaxed.
( ) 24. What does "Every mistake is a small map" mean?
A. Mistakes are easy to correct.
B. Maps are useful in learning.
C. We should avoid all mistakes.
D. Mistakes show us what to learn next.
( ) 25. What did the writer do with the mistake notebook?
A. She wrote down one mistake a day and practised the right answer.
B. She drew maps in it.
C. She copied the whole exam paper into it.
D. She gave it to her best friend.
( ) 26. Which of the following is the correct order of the events?

Want to Learn Better? Teach It!
Have you ever noticed that you understand something better after you explain it to a friend? If so, you have already met the "protégé effect (门徒效应)".
Scientists have studied this idea for years. In one experiment, two groups of students were asked to learn a short text. The first group was told that they would be tested on it. The second group was told that they would teach it to someone else. Later, the second group did better in the test — even though they had never actually met the person they were going to teach. Just preparing to teach made them learn more carefully.
Why does this happen? First, when you teach, you have to organize your ideas clearly. Second, you quickly find out what you do not really understand, because you cannot explain it. Third, explaining aloud helps you remember it longer.
But teaching does not have to be formal. You can try it in small ways. After a science class, tell your little brother what you learned. When you review for an exam, imagine that you are the teacher and explain the key points to an empty chair. Even a short explanation can make a big difference.
So the next time you want to learn something well, don't just read it over and over. Close the book, and try to teach it.
( ) 27. In the experiment, what were the second group told to do?
A. To take a test on the text.
B. To teach the text to others.
C. To write a story about the text.
D. To read the text twice.
( ) 28. Why did the second group do better?
A. Because preparing to teach made them learn more carefully.
B. Because they had more time.
C. Because they were cleverer than the first group.
D. Because the text was easier for them.
( ) 29. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a reason?
A. Teaching helps you organize your ideas.
B. Teaching shows what you don't really understand.
C. Teaching makes you more popular at school.
D. Explaining aloud helps you remember longer.
( ) 30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Make Friends at School
B. Want to Learn Better? Teach It!
C. The Story of a Great Scientist
D. Why Tests Are Important
How to Be an Active Learner
Becoming an active learner is not about studying longer. It is about studying in a smarter way. Here are some ideas.
First, ask questions. 31. When you don't understand something in class, don't just write it down and keep quiet. Raise your hand, or ask your teacher after class. Questions open the door to real understanding.
Second, set small goals. 32. For example, if you want to improve your English, start with ten new words a day instead of a hundred. A small goal is easier to reach, and reaching it gives you confidence to go on.
Third, review in time. 33. The things you learn today will slip away if you never look at them again. Spend five minutes before bed going over your notes, and you will remember much more.
Finally, learn from your mistakes. 34. Write them down, find out why, and try again. A mistake is not a failure; it is a free lesson.
Remember, being active does not mean being busy all the time. It means thinking about how you learn, and never being afraid to try.
A. Go over what you have learned before you forget it.
B. Every mistake can teach you something new.
C. Everyone has his or her own way of learning.
D. Don't be afraid to ask when something is unclear.
E. A goal that is too big may make you give up.
35. In your opinion, which learning habit is the most important? Why? (No more than 15 words)

Hua Luogeng was one of the greatest mathematicians in China. He was born in Jiangsu in 1910. His family was poor, so he had to leave school at the age of fifteen and work in his father's small shop.
But he never stopped learning. Every day, after the shop closed, he read maths books for hours and wrote down his ideas in a notebook.
In 1930, one of his articles appeared in a magazine. A professor at Tsinghua University read it and was surprised by the young man's talent, so he invited Hua to work there.
Hua Luogeng worked hard all his life. He once said that learning was like climbing a mountain — there was no short way, and only those who kept going could reach the top. Even when he was already a famous professor, he still spent hours reading every day.
His story tells us that we do not need to be born clever to learn well. What we really need is a good habit and the will to keep going.

How to Be a Smart Learner
Hello, everyone. I'm very glad to share my learning experience with you. I have two good learning habits. First, I keep a learning diary and write down five new words every day. Second, I review my notes for ten minutes before bed. I think that reviewing is the best way to remember.
Last term, I could not speak English well. I joined the English corner and practised with my classmates twice a week. Now I am much more confident.
I hope you will find your own way to learn. Remember: small steps lead to big progress. Thank you!
I think that reviewing is the best way to remember."
3. 语言亮点:keep a learning diary、practise with my classmates twice a week(具体频率)、small steps lead to big progress(呼应单元主题,非模板空话)。
4. 避免模板套话:用"英语角练习"这一具体经历替代 "I am a good learner."
