Unit 5 The weather and us Part B Read and write 第六课 (教学设计） I. Teaching Objectives 1. Students can read Dad’s letter and find the weather in Sydney and what people do there. 2. Students can answer the two questions and match the weather words with the right activities. 3. Students can write a short postcard from John to Dad using “It’s … here. I can …”. II. Key Points and Difficult Points Key Points Read the letter for the weather and the activities, and use “It’s … and …” and “I can …”. Difficult Points Pick the right weather word (sunny / windy / snowy …) and the right activity in the postcard; keep the be verb after “It’s” and use can + base verb. III. Teaching Tools The letter and postcard pictures, weather and activity word cards, PPT, and the textbook. IV. Teaching Procedures Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins) Show the two big pictures (a park in Sydney and a postcard). Ask “Where is Dad? What’s the weather like?” Take a few quick answers and give no correction at this stage. [Purpose] Wake up the weather and activity words the students already know and set the reading task. Step 2 Read for the gist (8 mins) Let students read the letter twice. Find how the weather is in Sydney (hot and sunny) and what people do there (play basketball, the children swim in the pool). Check by pointing at the line, not by translating. [Purpose] Train students to get the key information from a real letter. Step 3 Read and answer (7 mins) Answer the two questions in full sentences: It’s hot and sunny in Sydney. He can play basketball there. Clap once on “It’s” and once on the weather word. [Purpose] Move from understanding to speaking in complete sentences. Step 4 Choose and write (10 mins) Show the word bank (cloudy / rainy / snowy / sunny / windy; fly a kite, make a snowman, play basketball, read books, see a film). Students fill the postcard: “It’s … here. I can …” Praise one correct full sentence rather than a vague “good job”. [Purpose] Put the words and the sentence pattern to use in writing. Step 5 Say and share (5 mins) Pair work: each student reads his or her postcard to the partner. Two or three read aloud to the class. [Purpose] Give students a chance to show their writing and learn from each other. Step 6 Homework Read the postcard to your family. Then write one more sentence about what you can do tomorrow. V.
