2026时文阅读 9.21 Day 1 Scientific studies reveal that it's still worthwhile to learn languages AI时代,还要学外语吗? 词数  370  阅读时间  5分钟 AI tools from OpenAI, Google and many other companies now offer almost instant translation across dozens of languages, and they keep improving. This raises an important question. Is it still worth spending years learning another language? The argument against language learning may seem convincing, as humans have always developed tools to help them perform mental tasks: Writing reduced the demands on memory, while calculators made it less necessary to do math in our heads. However, there is a major difference between using a tool to strengthen your abilities and using it to avoid developing them altogether. Effort plays a central role in how we learn. Some challenges may not seem helpful at first, but they can lead to stronger long-term memory and deeper understanding. Scientists call these challenges "desirable difficulties". Struggling with grammar, searching for the right word and trying to express your ideas in another language all fall into this category. These activities engage brain networks involved in memory, attention and mental flexibility, helping you build knowledge more deeply. Using multiple languages may also help the brain maintain certain abilities as we age. The brain must manage competition between languages, monitor the situation and adapt quickly. These are no small tasks, and simply depending on translation tools might not provide the same mental exercise. Our recent study looks at these benefits in greater detail. While previous research has often presented a general "bilingual advantage", we found that the effects of language learning may be more specific. We studied 94 adults aged 18 to 83, including 24 monolinguals and 70 multilinguals. To compare how they processed visuospatial information, meaning what they saw or mentally mapped in space, with how they processed sounds, we asked them to complete tasks such as remembering sounds and focusing on visual patterns. The participants achieved similar scores on most tasks. However, those who spoke more languages, especially the older participants, performed much better on tests of visuospatial working memory. This suggests that being multilingual does not strengthen every aspect of cognition equally, but may help preserve specific functions. Moreover, translation is not the same as participation. Learning a language involves understanding how people think, what they value and how history shapes meaning. This kind of cultural understanding develops through genuine interaction, for which we can't fully rely on AI systems that translate on demand. 词汇积累 1. desirable adj. 值得拥有的,值得做的 同根词:desire vt. 想要;n. 愿望 The house has many desirable features. Day 2 Languages build magical connections 语言的魔力在于连接彼此 词数 380  阅读时间  5分钟 Estais listos? That was our Spanish teacher's opening question on our first day of night school. We stared blankly at him until he translated it into English: "Are you ready?" We all nodded and replied, "Si, estamos listos" (We're ready). The guy next to me tried to introduce himself. "Estoy enamorado", he said, meaning "I'm in love". Everyone laughed, and we began to relax. As for me, I was intimidated. I kept hoping the teacher would not ask me anything because I had no vocabulary, and translation apps were not allowed. I began to wonder whether Beginner Spanish was right for me. Languages have always been my strength and my passion. I speak French, know German and can get by in Italian. That is why I decided to learn Spanish. During the first six weeks of class, I worked hard to build my vocabulary. I felt proud that I could take in new knowledge so quickly. But Spanish eventually challenged me in a way I did not expect. Three years later, I enrolled in an Intermediate Spanish Conversation class. There were no more grammar exercises or memorization drills. I took on a much bigger challenge. Conversation classes required us to interact with others naturally. For perfectionists like me, that was scary. For our second class, we had to give a short presentation about a book we had read and then answer questions without preparation. I chose Cher's memoir and felt confident about speaking freely. With my notes in front of me, everything began well. But during the question-and-answer session, things went wrong. I struggled to find the right words, my mind went blank, and I started using French instead of Spanish. Anxiety set in as I realized that I sounded like a 2-year-old. Then something magical happened. I asked for help. My classmates supplied the words I needed, and the teacher guided me back. I have realized that I do not need to speak perfectly to connect with others. Before, I saw learning Spanish as a way to challenge my mind. Now, I see it as something more like improv. You have to be willing to look foolish, think creatively and keep the conversation going. In the end, connecting with others matters more than being perfect. 词汇积累 1. passion   n. 热爱,酷爱 用法:have a passion for sth 酷爱...... 同根词:passionate adj. 热情的,热爱的(be passionate about 对……有热情) She had a passion for gardening. Day 3 Could you imagine eating cookies made from plastic waste? “垃圾”食品:科学家用废弃塑料制成饼干  词数 370  阅读时间 5分钟 Soil, insects, cow dung- these are just a few of the unexpected ingredients that have found their way into cookies, challenging people's expectations. Now, pushing the limits even further, a team of US scientists has made cookies from plastic and agricultural waste. As the world struggles with growing plastic pollution and increasing concerns about food security, researchers are looking for ways to turn one problem into a means of solving the other. "We were trying to develop technologies for plastic upcycling to make more valuable products," Lahiru Jayakody from the team told the American Chemical Society. "We thought, why not focus on making food? Because plastic is [made of] carbon and food is carbon." One common plastic is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), often used to make water bottles. PET contains molecules that can be transformed into something like protein, supporting the researchers' innovative idea. While this can be done using chemical reactions and solvents in a lab, it's easier and greener to let microbes handle the process. The researchers have programmed different yeasts, including baker's yeast, to enable them to change the molecules in plastic and agricultural waste. To break down PET plastic and agricultural waste like corn stalks and leaves, the researchers used hot water and oxygen under high pressure. This process broke the materials into smaller pieces, which were then fed to yeast that transformed them into new food ingredients like proteins and fats. Finally, the researchers added other ingredients like fiber and sweeteners, and used a 3D printer to create protein-rich cookies. Currently, the team is still waiting for approval for human trials of the cookies. Although no one has tasted them yet, scientists report that they have an appealing smell. Notably, the study is not limited to cookies, as the food ingredients can also be used to produce other food items, Jayakody told ScienceAlert. More importantly, the cookie-making system is a portable, self-contained device capable of producing food whenever and wherever it is needed. This technology is ideal for turning carbon waste into food in challenging environments like deserts and the Arctic. It could potentially be used on Mars or the moon, according to Jayakody. 词汇积累 1. ingredient   n. 成分,原料 用法:ingredient作名词还可表示“(成功的)要素” The food is home-cooked using fresh ingredients. Pre-reading When traveling, which do you prefer: following a detailed plan or going with the flow? Why? II. Reading There are certain things you're supposed to do in Italy: eat pasta, drink espresso and visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I'd seen photos of tourists posing creatively with the iconic tower, and it all seemed charming and effortless. On the day we arrived, we had timed tickets. No line. No waiting. Just a simple plan: see the tower, move on. Instead, I found myself worrying about the heat and how it could become a medical emergency. I wondered, if I collapsed, what was the Italian number for 911? The thought of becoming a headline - Canadian tourist dies trying to have the perfect day in Pisa - felt both ridiculous and possible. We'd prepared for almost everything, but nothing prepared me for the overwhelming heat and crowds of people each trying to "hold up" the tower. Excitement turned to apprehension. Buildings aren't supposed to lean, and this one looked like it was falling. My kids pulled toward the staircase while I wondered if my legs could handle the climb. The staircase wound upward in a tight spiral, each step worn smooth by centuries of visitors. The cool stone wall was a relief from the heat. But everything leaned, and my body struggled to adjust. Dizzy yet determined, I climbed on. At the top, the city unfolded below us. Terracotta rooftops stretched to the horizon, and a breeze provided relief from the heat. For the first time, I felt okay. Below, life continued as normal. Nothing about the scene had changed. Only the way I was looking at it. I'd brought expectations - photos, views, memories - but hadn't planned for how it would feel to be there. The day didn't go as imagined, but those unplanned moments are what I remember. By the time we descended, I'd let go of my perfect day vision. The kids had given up posing, more interested in shade and water. They weren't thinking about the itinerary; they were just enjoying each moment. As we reached the bottom, they were already arguing about gelato. 阅读理解 1. What did the author expect from the Pisa visit beforehand? A. A taste of local food culture. B. A creative photo with the tower. C. A headline about her perfect day. D. An easy and pleasant experience. 2. What does the underlined word "apprehension" in paragraph 5 most probably mean? A. Anxiety. B. Relief. C. Confusion. D. Amazement. 3. What can we learn about the author's climb up the tower? A. Her kids led her all the way up. B. The smooth steps slowed her down. C. She pushed through her discomfort. D. She regretted deciding to climb the tower. 4. Which statement would the author most probably agree with? A. Perfect trips are born of loose plans. B. Famous sights rarely live up to photos. C.
