Unit 4 Helping in the community
Part B Let’s talk 第四课 (教学设计)
I. Teaching Objectives
1. Students can listen, point and say the four action phrases: making the bed, singing old songs, telling funny stories and cleaning the room.
2. Students can use "be + V-ing" to say what people are doing in the community, e.g. "Chen Jie is making the bed."
3. Students can talk about how young people help their community and feel proud to give a hand.
II. Key Points and Difficult Points
1. Key points: the four phrases (making the bed / singing old songs / telling funny stories / cleaning the room) and the structure "is/are + V-ing".
2. Difficult points: choosing is for one person and are for many; keeping the -ing after be. Students often drop the -ing or mix is/are.
III. Teaching Tools
Flashcards of the four actions, a big picture of an old people’s home, the textbook recording, and a soft ball for the guessing game.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead-in (5 mins)
Show the picture of students working in an old people’s home. Ask "What are they doing?" and take a handful of quick answers with no correction at this stage.
[Purpose] Wake up the topic and get everyone talking before they fear mistakes.
Step 2: Listen and match (8 mins)
Play the dialogue twice. First listen: who is busy? Second listen: match each person to the action — Chen Jie is making the bed, Zhang Peng is singing old songs, Binbin and John are telling funny stories. Check by pointing at the picture, not by translating.
[Purpose] Move from gist to detail, and let the pictures carry the meaning.
Step 3: Read and clap (7 mins)
Read the lines in two voices, then clap once on "is" and twice on "are" while pointing to one face or many faces, so they feel is for one and are for more.
[Purpose] Put the is/are rule in the body before it reaches the pen.
Step 4: Look and say (7 mins)
Return to the big picture and ask "What are the students doing for their community?" Pairs drill full sentences: "Chen Jie is making the bed." / "Some are cleaning the room."
[Purpose] Turn the story into their own speaking, one full sentence at a time.
Step 5: Act and guess (6 mins)
One student acts an action; the class guesses with a full sentence, "You are cleaning the room!" Praise one good guess rather than a vague good job.
[Purpose] Let shy students speak through a game instead of a spotlight.
Step 6: Homework
Read the dialogue to the family. Draw one thing you are doing at home and write one sentence, e.g. "I am making the bed."
V. Board Design
Centre: What are they doing?
Left — making the bed / singing old songs / telling funny stories / cleaning the room
Right — is → one person | are → many people (be + V-ing)
Bottom — Young people can help their community!
教学反思
用"老人在老人之家笑"这张大图开场,加上拍手区分 is/are,后排平时不开口的孩子也能跟着拍、跟着说,课堂气氛比预想的好。Act and guess 环节让害羞的学生靠动作先接住话题,整句 "You are cleaning the room" 出得比我预期的齐。
不足是 -ing 还是丢得多,写"我 am make the bed"这类错误集中出现,下节课要把 be 和 -ing 拆成两步先口头拼再动笔。另外 Act and guess 玩得太投入,挤掉了 Look and say 的展示,下次先卡好时间,把展示留够。
