Unit 4 Helping in the community
Part A Let’s spell 第三课 (教学设计)
I. Teaching Objectives
1. Students can read the four ph-words — phone, photo, Philip, elephant — and say the sound /f/.
2. Students can listen, number the words, and write the missing words in two sentences.
3. Students can pick out the ph-words in a short chant and read the chant with the right sound.
II. Key Points and Difficult Points
Key Points
The letters ph make the sound /f/, as in phone, photo and elephant. Read and write these four words.
Difficult Points
Remember that ph says /f/, not "p + h". Keep the words apart: photo (a picture) and phone (to call) look alike.
III. Teaching Tools
Word cards (phone, photo, Philip, elephant), a real phone, one printed photo, the chant audio, and a small mirror.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins)
Hold up a phone: "phone, phone, /f/ /f/ phone." Show a photo: "photo, /f/." Take a handful of quick answers about things at home that start with /f/, and give no correction at this stage.
[Purpose] Put the /f/ sound in the air first, so the ph rule has somewhere to land.
Step 2 Listen, repeat and chant (8 mins)
Play the chant twice — first just listen, then clap on every ph-word. Read line by line: Philip has a phone. / He takes photos with his phone. / This is a photo of some elephants. / It's a photo from his phone! Circle the ph-words: Philip, phone, photos, photo, elephants.
[Purpose] The chant carries the sound, and the clap makes them hear exactly where ph sits.
Step 3 Read, listen and number (7 mins)
Read the four cards aloud: elephant, Philip, phone, photo. Let each pair use the mirror to feel /f/ on the lip. Play the audio, students number, then check by pointing at the card — not by translating.
[Purpose] Train the ear to pick ph out of four words that all look a bit alike.
Step 4 Look, listen and write (8 mins)
Read the two frames: There are some ______. / There are three ______ in the photo. Play the audio and write elephants and photos. Remind them: after some and three we need the -s. Walk around and praise one clean full word rather than a vague good job.
[Purpose] Move from hearing the sound to spelling it, and keep the plural -s in place.
Step 5 The ph sound game (5 mins)
Put word cards on the board in two piles: a ph-word / not a ph-word. Call the words fast — fan, fish, phone, cat, photo, duck — and clap once on every ph-word. Check by watching the clap, not by translating.
[Purpose] Fix the trap. ph says /f/, so it belongs with fish and fan, not with pig.
Step 6 Homework
Read the chant to a family member three times. Find two more ph-words at home or in a book (for example dolphin) and write them down.
[Purpose] Carry the /f/ sound past the bell.
V. Board Design
Center box: ph = /f/
Left word cards: phone photo Philip elephant
Right: the chant, with every ph underlined
Trap box at the bottom: fish = fan ≠ pig (ph says /f/)
Two frames: There are some elephants. / There are three photos in the photo.
