I could sing better than almost everyone else in my school. I was pretty sure that once I got to sixth grade, everyone would be surprised by me.
But actually, they weren’t.
When I arrived at my new class, I couldn’t wait to show everyone what I could do. However, there was always someone else who could do them better. My grades began to suffer. More talented (有天资的) girls often sang solo (独唱). I believed I wasn’t smart. I believed I wasn’t talented. I believed I was a failure.
Over the next two years, I had to work very hard. Every prize for the singing match was given to me for hard work and effort. Grades were still very low but improving little by little. I worked really hard. However, I was never the best at everything.
I didn’t realize until recently that I really don’t have to be the best at everything. I was too hard on myself. In fact, when I did badly in a test, my classmates never laughed at me.
No one is perfect. There will probably always be someone better than me at something. Anyway, there are about seven billion people in this world. I will never be the number one at everything, and that’s really okay.

Do you want to read more but always struggle to stick to it? Do you often start a book but never finish it? Here are some practical ways to help you build a good reading habit.
First, pick books that interest you. If you choose a book you don’t like, you’ll easily get bored and give up. You can try different kinds of books—storybooks, science books, or even travel diaries. The key is to find something that makes you eager to turn the next page.
Second, set small and clear goals. You don’t need to read a whole book in a day. Start with a small goal, like reading 10 pages or spending 15 minutes every day. For example, you can read while eating breakfast or before going to sleep. Small goals are easy to achieve, and each small success will encourage you to keep going.
Third, create a nice reading space. Find a quiet corner in your home—maybe a chair by the window or a desk in your bedroom. Keep your books, a lamp, and a cup of tea there. A comfortable space makes you more willing to sit down and read.
Fourth, keep a reading list. Write down the books you want to read. When you finish a book, cross it out and add a new one. This helps you stay organized and makes you excited to start the next book.
Finally, share your reading with others. Talk to your family or friends about the books you’ve read. You can tell them your favorite parts or what you learned from the book. Sharing not only makes reading more fun but also helps you remember the book better.
9.What is the first way to build a good reading habit?
A.Set big goals. B.Pick interesting books.
C.Create a reading space. D.Share with others.
10.Why should we set small reading goals?
A.Because small goals are easy to achieve. B.Because we have no time for big goals.
C.Because small goals are more interesting. D.Because big goals are too difficult.
11.What can a reading list help us do?
A.Read faster. B.Stay organized.
C.Choose cheaper books. D.Remember more words.
12.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Reading with friends. B.Setting small goals.
C.Buying more books. D.Keeping a reading list.
【答案】9.B 10.A 11.B 12.C

11.第5段“This helps you stay organized and makes you excited to start the next book.”表明,阅读清单能帮助保持有条理。
12.第3段“set small and clear goals.”、第5段“keep a reading list.”及第6段“Share your reading with others.”分别提到了设定目标、列清单和分享阅读,未提及买更多书。

White Fang was the lead dog of the pack (群) that pulled the sled (雪橇). He stopped running when he was told to stop and started when he was told to start. The other dogs had to follow him. If they didn’t, Gray Beaver would hit them. The dogs hated White Fang, but the only way they could show their anger was by fighting him in a pack. White Fang was so strong that a dog on his own had no chance to win.
There came a time when Gray Beaver decided to visit Fort Yukon, a place where there were many white men. This was the time of the Gold Rush in Fort Yukon. White men came from all over North America to look for gold. They came first by boat on the Yukon River, and then walked with their dogs to the gold fields. Gray Beaver stayed there and sold local things like shoes and clothing made of animal skin to them. He soon became rich.
These white men’s dogs were not like the dogs of the Native (本地的) Americans. They were smaller and weaker. They were not as brave. They did not fight in packs. White Fang and Gray Beaver’s other dogs attacked and killed many of them. One white man had a gun. He killed six of Gray Beaver’s dogs. White Fang was clever enough to escape (逃跑). The white men quickly learned that White Fang was not like the other dogs. They could see that there was a wolf in him. They didn’t try to touch him the way they touched their own dogs.
No one loved White Fang. He obeyed (服从) Gray Beaver because Gray Beaver was a “god” to him, not because he liked White Fang. White Fang had no friends. He was the enemy of everything and everyone. There was also no kindness or gentleness in White Fang.

Memory Marvels
When you’re learning a new language, there are a lot of things to remember: spelling rules, grammar rules, punctuation rules...the list is endless. But there’s something that can help you: mnemonics (记忆术).
Mnemonics are techniques to help you remember things. There are a variety of them, including rhymes, spelling acronyms and sentence mnemonics.
Rhymes are a great way to remember things. The sounds, unusual words, and rhythm of them help you recall ideas. Do you know when Columbus sailed to America? There’s a rhyme to help you which goes like this, “In fourteen-hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” Most people who’ve heard that never forget it!
Spelling acronyms involve creating a sentence based on the letters of a target word. For example, the following sentence can help you with the spelling of the word “because”, “Big elephants can always understand small elephants”. Notice how the first letter of each word in the sentence spells out the word “because”. This one is designed to remind you to include the “h” in the word “which”, “Which house is Cath’s house?” To spell Mississippi, a rhythm mnemonic is combined with a spelling one: “miss iss ippi”. And if you can’t remember the spelling of the word “mnemonics”, use this one “Mike never eats meat or nuts in case he’s sick”!
Sentence mnemonics are also useful. The following can help you with the difference between the words “principal” and “principle”, “A principal is your pal at school, and a principle is a belief or rule.” Or this one to help you remember the difference in spelling between “deserts” (such as the Sahara) and “desserts” (such as Tiramisu), “A dessert has two sugars so it’s sweeter, but a desert only has one.” The two “sugars” mentioned in the sentence refer to the two s’s in the word “dessert”. Or this one to clear up the confusion between “stationery” and “stationary”, “The car is stationary. An envelope is stationery.”
Mnemonics can help a lot with language learning. Why not try inventing a few of your own!
41.What are the three types of mnemonics in the passage?
42.Why does the sentence “Big elephants can always understand small elephants” can help memorize “because”?
43.How to memorize “deserts” and “desserts” correctly using mnemonics?
44.Do you think mnemonics are helpful to your English learning? Of the three, which one do you like best and how will you use it? Please give one example.
【答案】41.Rhymes, spelling acronyms and sentence mnemonics. 42.Because the first letter of each word in the sentence spells out the word “because”. 43.By remembering a dessert has two “s” but a desert only has one “s”. 44.Yes, I think mnemonics are helpful to my English learning. I didn’t realize until recently that I really don’t have to be the best at everything. I was too hard on myself. In fact, when I did badly in a test, my classmates never laughed at me. No one is perfect. There will probably always be someone better than me at something. Anyway, there are about seven billion people in this world. A.When I Wasn’t Perfect B.My Past Life as a Young Girl C.Hard Work Doesn’t Work D.What to Do When You’re Not Perfect C Do you want to read more but always struggle to stick to it? D White Fang was the lead dog of the pack (群) that pulled the sled (雪橇). He stopped running when he was told to stop and started when he was told to start. The other dogs had to follow him. If they didn’t, Gray Beaver would hit them. The dogs hated White Fang, but the only way they could show their anger was by fighting him in a pack. This was the time of the Gold Rush in Fort Yukon. White men came from all over North America to look for gold. They came first by boat on the Yukon River, and then walked with their dogs to the gold fields. Gray Beaver stayed there and sold local things like shoes and clothing made of animal skin to them. No one loved White Fang. He obeyed (服从) Gray Beaver because Gray Beaver was a “god” to him, not because he liked White Fang. White Fang had no friends. He was the enemy of everything and everyone. An envelope is stationery.” Mnemonics can help a lot with language learning.
