In 1887, a young American journalist did something that few women of her time would dare to do. Her name was Elizabeth Cochrane, but readers across the country knew her better by her pen name — Nellie Bly.
At twenty-three, Bly got a job at a major newspaper in New York. One day, she read reports about a mental hospital on an island, where patients were said to be treated badly. Few people believed the stories, because no journalist had ever been allowed inside. Bly decided to find out the truth herself. After weeks of preparation, she pretended to be mentally ill and was sent into the hospital as a patient.
Inside, she kept her eyes and ears open all the time. She secretly recorded what she saw and heard: cold baths in the middle of the night, locked rooms, and patients treated like prisoners. Some of them, she discovered, were not ill at all. After ten days, she was released and wrote a long report based on her notes. The report, later published as a book, shocked the whole country. Doctors and officials were accused of their cruel treatment, and the hospital was forced to improve the way it cared for its patients.
Bly's report became a classic example of investigative journalism. It proved that news should not simply repeat what officials say; a good journalist must check the facts, wherever they lead. Bly herself remained committed to this principle all her life. In 1889, she travelled around the world in seventy-two days, breaking the world record and turning her name into a symbol of brave and truthful reporting.
More than a century has passed, yet Bly's courage still inspires young journalists today: bring the truth to light, however difficult the task may be.

Why do you still remember "Just do it", but forget yesterday's English words? The answer lies in the psychology of advertising. Modern advertising is not simply about showing a product; it is about getting a message across to your heart.
Advertisers know that our decisions are often made by feelings rather than by facts. So instead of listing what a product can do, many advertisements tell a story: a runner crosses the finishing line first, a family laughs around a dinner table, a child offers her tired mother a cup of tea. The product is hardly mentioned, yet the warm feeling is firmly connected to the brand in our minds. Next time we stand in a shop, that quiet feeling speaks louder than reason.
Slogans are another powerful tool. A memorable slogan usually contains few words, a clear rhythm and a clever repetition of sounds. "Buy one, get one free" sounds simple, but it makes the discount seem bigger than it really is. Psychologists call this the "framing effect": the same fact looks different when it is presented in different ways.
Brand ambassadors work in a similar way. When a famous athlete holds a bottle of drink in front of the camera, we are not really watching an advertisement — we are watching someone we admire "recommending" it. Studies show that people are more likely to purchase a product when it is connected with a face they trust.
None of this means advertising is evil. Nevertheless, understanding how advertisements work helps us become smarter purchasers. The next time an advertisement makes your heart beat fast, pause and ask yourself: do I really need the product, or do I just want the feeling?
28.According to the passage, in story-style advertisements, the warm feeling is connected to ________.
A.the price of the product

C.the shop where we buy it
D.the package of the product

29.What is the "framing effect"?
A.People forget advertisements quickly.
B.Stories are more interesting than pictures.
C.Famous faces make products more trustworthy.
D.The same fact seems different when presented in different ways.
【答案】D
词义猜测题。由第三段“the same fact looks different when it is presented in different ways”可知,“框架效应”指同一事实以不同方式呈现时看起来不一样。故选D。
30.Why do companies choose famous athletes as brand ambassadors?
A.Athletes know the products best.
B.Athletes charge less money.
C.People tend to trust products connected with faces they admire.
D.Athletes appear on TV every day.
【答案】C
细节理解题。由第四段“people are more likely to purchase a product when it is connected with a face they trust”可知,名人大使让产品与受人信任的面孔联系起来,人们更愿意购买。故选C。

D.Follow your heart when shopping.
【答案】A

A hundred years ago, people in small Chinese towns learned about the outside world in a very different way. A town crier would walk through the streets with a gong, shouting the latest news at every corner. Then came newspapers, radio and television, and each new medium changed both the speed of news and the way we receive it.
Radio brought news into ordinary homes in the 1920s. For the first time in history, people could hear an event described by a reporter's voice just hours after it happened. Television went one step further. In the 1970s, millions of Chinese families gathered around a small screen at seven o'clock every evening to watch the news. For many children of that time, the opening music of the news programme meant that the whole family was together.
The real revolution, however, has come from the Internet and smartphones. News now reaches us within seconds, and everyone with a phone can record an event and broadcast it to the world. This is often called "citizen journalism". It has brought us many touching moments that professional cameras happened to miss, but it has also created new problems: false stories spring up and spread quickly, because nobody checks them before they are released.
Ironically, the faster news travels, the more carefully we must read it. A story that is accurate but slightly late is far more valuable than one that is fast but false. That is why, in this age of instant information, the traditional virtues of journalism — checking, questioning and confirming — matter more than ever. The medium keeps changing, but the search for truth never ends.
32.What did a town crier do a hundred years ago?

C.He sold radios from door to door.
D.He broadcast news on television.
【答案】B

【答案】D
细节理解题。由第二段“In the 1970s, millions of Chinese families gathered around a small screen at seven o'clock every evening to watch the news”可知,晚上七点看新闻联播成为全民习惯。故选D。
34.What problem does citizen journalism bring?
A.News travels too slowly.
B.Professional cameras cost too much.
C.False stories spread quickly before being checked.
D.People have given up watching TV.
【答案】C
细节理解题。由第三段“false stories spring up and spread quickly, because nobody checks them before they are released”可知,公民新闻带来的问题是假消息未经核实便迅速传播。A 项与“News now reaches us within seconds”相反。故选C。
35.What is the author's main point in the last paragraph?
A.Checking, questioning and confirming matter more than ever.
B.Speed matters more than truth.
C.Traditional journalism will soon disappear.
D.Smartphones should not be used to record news.
【答案】A
观点态度题。由末段“the traditional virtues of journalism — checking, questioning and confirming — matter more than ever”可知,核实、质疑与求证比以往任何时候都更重要。故选A。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Smartphones bring us news at any moment of the day, but not everything that looks like news is true. So how can you protect yourself from false information? Here are some tips for the critical news reader in the digital age.
36 Headlines are written to catch your eye, and sometimes they exaggerate what really happened. A story may turn out to be quite different from what its headline promises, so read the whole story before you make up your mind.
37 Dates matter more than you think. An old story about a storm is sometimes reposted as if it had just happened, causing unnecessary fear among readers.
Separate facts from opinions. Words like "maybe", "probably" and "in my view" tell you that the writer is guessing rather than reporting. Ask yourself whether a sentence can be checked, or is just what someone believes. 38 .
Compare several sources. If only one website is talking about a "shocking" event, be careful. 39 When reliable media all report the same facts, the story is more likely to be true.
Finally, slow down before you share. A false story can spread across the country within minutes, because thousands of people pass it on without thinking. 40 By checking first, you help stop the spread of false news.
A.True stories are usually reported by more than one news organization.
B.Never judge a piece of news by its headline alone.
C.Take a moment to question a story before you share it with others.
D.Check when and where the story was first published.

When I was fifteen, our town took pride in its clear river. Fish swam below, and children often swam there in summer. Life along the river was full of 41 .
One Saturday morning, I noticed something strange by the river. Dead fish covered the bank, and the water gave off a terrible smell. I stood there, 42 . Who had done this? Nearby, a pipe ran from the chemical factory straight into the river, and grey, dirty 43 was being released day and night.
My friends told me to forget it. "We are just students," they said. "Nobody will listen to us." But I could not get the dying fish out of my 44 . I filled two bottles with the polluted water and wrote to the local newspaper, 45 what I had seen.
Three days later, a journalist called me. She had 46 the water in her lab, and the results confirmed my story. "Would you like to be my witness?" she asked. I agreed, 47 I knew my name would appear in the paper.
The report was published the next week, with photos of the pipe. It soon caused a heated 48 across the town. At first, the factory owner denied everything and even 49 me of spreading rumours. But the facts were clear, and the factory was finally 50 to stop production until it cleaned up its waste.
Months later, the river slowly recovered. Last summer, I saw children playing in the water again, their laughter 51 along the bank. The editor later told me that mine had been the first letter about the factory; several adults had noticed the smell but had chosen to remain 52 . I kept those two bottles for years.
That experience taught me a lesson I have never forgotten: 53 does not come from being old or powerful. It belongs to those who care and refuse to stay silent. I am still 54 to that principle today. Whenever I see something wrong, I pick up my pen, for the truth, sooner or later, will come to 55 .

I'm sorry to hear that short videos are taking up so much of your time. Don't worry — a few small changes can help.
These videos are designed to absorb all your attention, so willpower alone is not enough. I suggest you set a maximum of half an hour a day and let an app remind you. Meanwhile, take up a hobby that brightens up your free time, such as basketball or reading. Once you are committed to it, you will naturally spend less time on the screen.
I believe you can make it. Looking forward to your good news.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

B.the brand in our minds
C.the shop where we buy it
D.the package of the product
29.What is the "framing effect"?
A.People forget advertisements quickly.
B.Stories are more interesting than pictures.
C.Famous faces make products more trustworthy.
D.The same fact seems different when presented in different ways.
30.Why do companies choose famous athletes as brand ambassadors?
A.Athletes know the products best.
B.Athletes charge less money.
C.People tend to trust products connected with faces they admire.
D.Athletes appear on TV every day.
31.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Ask yourself whether you really need the product.
B.Never buy anything advertised.
C.Advertising should be strictly limited.
D.Follow your heart when shopping.

A.He printed the local newspaper.
B.He shouted the latest news in the streets.
C.He sold radios from door to door.
D.He broadcast news on television.
33.What became a national habit in the 1970s?
A.Listening to the radio at noon.
B.Reading the evening paper.
C.Recording TV programmes.
D.Watching the seven o'clock TV news.
34.What problem does citizen journalism bring?
A.News travels too slowly.
B.Professional cameras cost too much.
C.False stories spread quickly before being checked.
D.People have given up watching TV.
35.What is the author's main point in the last paragraph?
A.Checking, questioning and confirming matter more than ever.
B.Speed matters more than truth.
C.Traditional journalism will soon disappear.
D.Smartphones should not be used to record news.

E.Learning to notice such words will keep you from taking opinions as facts.
F.Fake news writers often use famous people's photos to draw attention.
G.Reading printed newspapers is good for your eyes.
