Spencer Silver wanted to make a strong glue. Instead, he made one that stuck only lightly. Paper joined with it could easily come apart. It did not meet his original goal, but Silver kept telling other scientists about it.
Art Fry, one of his colleagues, had a small problem. Paper bookmarks kept falling out of his songbook. He needed a temporary bookmark. It should stay in place while he sang, then come off without hurting the page.
Fry remembered Silver's glue. The two worked together to put it on paper. The new bookmark worked. Then, as people at their company wrote messages on the little pieces of paper and passed them around, they discovered another use. The pieces could carry notes as well as mark pages.
The product did not immediately sell well everywhere. Later, when people received samples and tried them, many understood its value. These small notes became known as Post-it Notes. Their story shows why a discovery can wait for years before becoming useful: someone needs to connect it with the right problem.
