根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Travelling to a place where the customs are new can be both exciting and uncomfortable. You step off the plane full of curiosity, and yet within hours something as simple as a greeting may leave you unsure of what to do next. 1________ Learning something about local customs before you go is one of the easiest ways to avoid trouble.
The first thing visitors often notice is the way people greet each other. In some countries a handshake is expected; in others people bow, or press their hands together and say a short prayer-like phrase. 2________ Nobody will laugh at a traveller who tries; what causes discomfort is usually looking nervous and doing nothing at all.
Clothing can be a more serious matter than many people expect. A sleeveless shirt may be perfectly normal at a beach, but the same shirt can be considered rude in a temple or a small village. 3________ It is a quiet way of showing that you have noticed the difference and respect it.
Then comes food, which is often the part travellers remember longest. You may be handed a dish that you cannot name, served with the fingers of your right hand, or asked three times before you accept a second helping. 4________ In many cultures refusing everything the host offers is taken far more rudely than eating slowly and leaving a little.
None of this means you must pretend to be somebody else. Locals generally do not expect a visitor to behave exactly as they do. 5________ A little preparation, an open mind and the courage to ask "Is it all right if I do this?" will take you further than any guidebook.
A. What they do expect is that you show respect for their way of life.
B. Try a little of everything, even if you are not sure what it is.
C. It also helps to carry a large amount of cash in small notes.
D. Following the local style of dress is usually the safest choice.
E. These differences are exactly what makes travelling worthwhile.
F. Most markets there close early, so buy what you need in the morning.
G. Copying what you see around you is perfectly acceptable.
五、阅读理解
(一)
Alex had been in India for less than a week when Rani, a colleague he had met in Delhi, invited him to her cousin's wedding. "You must come," she said. "It will be unlike anything you have ever seen." Alex accepted at once, though he had no idea what to expect, and spent the next morning looking for a suitable jacket.
When he arrived at the house, the courtyard had already been decorated with strings of yellow flowers, and a small band was playing in the corner. Nearly a hundred guests were seated on carpets under a bright cloth roof. Nobody seemed to mind that the ceremony had not started two hours after the time printed on the invitation.
The bride arrived surrounded by her female relatives, her hands painted with delicate brown patterns. The groom came later on a white horse, followed by more musicians. For Alex, the most difficult part was the food: several dishes were placed in front of him at once, and each time he finished one, somebody immediately filled it again.
"Eat slowly," Rani whispered. "If you leave it, they think you dislike it." Alex smiled and tried everything, including a sweet he could not name. By the end of the evening his hands were stained with colour and his shoes were covered in dust, but nobody appeared to care.
On the train back to Delhi he wrote in his notebook: "I have never been anywhere I understood less and enjoyed more." Months later, when friends asked which country he would visit again, he answered without hesitation, and he still keeps the flower string Rani's mother tied around his wrist.

(二)
It was late afternoon when Maria arrived in the coastal city, and the streets were already full of people in silver and blue. She had read about the festival in a magazine, but nothing had prepared her for the noise: drums from one direction, singing from another, and somewhere out of sight a whistle blowing again and again.
She found a place on the pavement beside an old woman who was selling cold drinks from a bucket. "First time?" the woman asked. Maria nodded. "Then stay close to the wall," she said. "When the big groups come past, you do not want to be in the middle of the road." Maria bought a drink and did as she was told.
The first dancers appeared twenty minutes later. Each group wore a different colour, and the costumes were far heavier and more elaborate than they looked on television. Some dancers were clearly tired, yet they kept the same fixed smile as they moved past. A small girl at the front waved at Maria, and Maria waved back.
For two hours the street belonged to the dancers. Afterwards, people simply picked up their bags and went home, leaving paper streamers on the ground. By midnight sweepers had arrived, and by six in the morning the road looked almost as ordinary as it had the week before.
Years later Maria still tells people the one thing the old woman taught her: in a strange city, ask a person who is standing still. It is advice she has never forgotten, and it has kept her out of trouble more than once in the years since.
6.What surprised Maria most when she arrived?
A. The high price of cold drinks.
B. The loud noise all around her.
C. The empty streets.
D. The cold weather.
7.Why did the old woman tell Maria to stay close to the wall?
A. Because the pavement was very narrow.
D. Because police had closed the road.
C. Because it was about to rain.
B. Because large groups of dancers were passing.
8.What does the writer say about the dancers' costumes?
A. They were made of paper.
B. They were heavier and more elaborate than they appear on TV.
C. They were all exactly the same colour.
D. They were borrowed from tourists.
9.What happened after the dancers had passed?
A. The street was cleaned before morning.
B. The festival continued for several days.
C. Nobody stayed to watch the end.
D. The old woman closed her shop.
10.Which of the following best describes Maria's feeling about the trip?
A. Disappointed.
B. Frightened.
C. Grateful.
D. Bored.
