B On a cold winter day in Denver, I waited in line to see my hero, Jack Canfield, the co-author of the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series and the author of The Success Principles. What Jack had become was a version of what I wanted to be. During his talk, Jack took out his wallet, pulled out a hundred-dollar bill, and said, “Who wants this?” Hands shot up in the audience; people leaned forward to see whom Jack would choose. But I ran up the stairs to the stage and grabbed the bill from his hand. He turned to me and said, “Yes, that’s it! Instead of waiting around for opportunities, simply take the initiative and create what we want!” After this week, I asked for his personal e-mail address and sent him e-mail sharing my views and dreams. He kindly e-mailed back simple encouragement such as “Keep thinking and playing bigger; it’s much more fun that way. Love, Jack.” Then I got occupied with other things in life and I stopped e-mail Jack. A year later, my dream gradually faded. I had this idea if I got back in touch with Jack. I e-mailed him again and again but got no response. As I sat down at my computer to check my e-mail for the fifth time in 15 minutes, an inspiration came like lighting: What was I doing? Was I waiting for the prize of life? I knew I needed to do something about all this waiting. I was going to write a book, which I would call “Waiting for Jack”! It all sounded good, but then reality hit. Some nights I cried and wanted to give up. I wrote and rewrote. Even though I could feel the fear, I did it anyway. Fortunately, three years later, Waiting for Jack turns out a best-seller on Amazon! We all have a “Jack” for whom we wait — whether it’s a person, a place or a thing. Now I would like to ask you: what are you waiting for? 41. From the first paragraph we can learn that the author _________. A. wanted Jack to autograph her book B. wanted to be as successful as Jack C. wanted to make friends with Jack D. wanted to get help from Jack 42. It can be inferred from the passage that Jack Canfield is probably a person who _________. A. welcomes challenges in life B. enjoys playing a lot C. likes showing off his wealth D. seldom takes risks 43. How did the author lose contact with Jack? A. She and Jack had an argument. B. She had no time to contact Jack. C. Jack was too proud to get along with. D. She was too upset with her broken dream. 44. Which of the following statements is NOT True according to the passage? A. The author considered Jack Canfield as her idol. B. The author was not very satisfied with Jack’s response at first. C. It was the author’s sudden desire to write a book called Waiting for Jack. D. The author spent three years writing Waiting for Jack, so it became a best seller. 45. What might be the theme of the book Waiting for Jack? A. The disappointment of waiting for her hero, Jack. B. The need to keep waiting for the prize of our life. C. The importance of taking action to achieve a goal. D. The harm of blindly worshipping others as heroes. C It’s become accepted that exposure to blue light — the type produced by electronic device’s screens is bad for sleep. Researchers have understood that your body is controlled by its circadian rhythms (生理时钟), which are a set of repeated physical, mental, and behavioral changes. The clearest circadian rhythm is the one that makes you tired at night and watchful during the day. This process is directed by melatonin, a chemical produced by your body when it’s dark outside. Nighttime light exposure can put this process into disorder, stopping melatonin production and keeping you awake longer. Many studies have suggested blue light is an especially powerful melatonin suppressant (抑制剂). That thinking about blue light has led to inventions meant to stop the like “night mode” settings on your iPads or phones and glasses that people believe decrease blue light. But a paper by a group of researchers at the University of Manchester in the U.K. printed in Current Biology challenges that belief. After exposing mice to lights that were different in color but of the same brightness and watching their following activity, the team said that yellow light actually seems to stop sleeping more than blue. Warm light, they believed, could make the body think it’s daytime, while cooler blue light more closely copies evening. Animal studies should be accepted with a certain degree of care, as they often do not translate directly to human behavior, says Dr. Cathy Goldstein. She is a sleep expert at Michigan Medicine. Though mice are frequently used in sleep research, Goldstein notes since they are active at night, they may behave differently to light than humans do. Goldstein agrees research on how light from electronics influences sleep hasn’t been conclusive. But she says there’s no reason not to use night mode on electronics. Just remember to turn down the brightness, she says. 46. What will happen when there is more melatonin in your body? A. You’ll feel sleepy. B. You’ll feel unhappy. C. You’ll want to get up. D. You’ll want more food. 47. What did the study printed in Current Biology find? A. Brightness influences sleep more than color. B. Blue light does very little harm to your health. C. Your body could be influenced by circadian rhythms. D. Yellow light may be worse for sleep than blue light. 48. What does Goldstein think of the study mentioned in Paragraph 3? A. Its research method is very creative. B. It will have a big influence on electronics. C. Its results may only be true to some degree. D. It may deepen our thinking about blue light. 49. What is the best title for the text? A. Is yellow light a melatonin suppressant? B. Should I use night mode on my phone? C. Should animals be used in sleep research? D. Is blue light more useful than yellow light? 50. Which column of the magazine does the text probably come from? A. Health. B. Sports. C. Education. D. Lifestyle. D These days, it's not unusual to see middle-aged men collecting Star Wars action figures, office workers wearing Hello Kitty accessories, or celebrities like David Beckham playing with Lego bricks. It's becoming more and more common to see adults taking an interest in toys, comic books and the activities that are traditionally associated with children. This phenomenon has given rise to a new word: kidult. What lies behind the phenomenon? One is about adults' nostalgia (怀旧之情)for the carefree days of childhood, and this is especially true with today's fast-paced, stressful lifestyles. Another is about a societal change in recent decades where people are starting families later. As a result, they have more time and money to spend on themselves. Some adults could only window-shop for their dream toys when they were kids, but now they can afford that radio controlled car or high-priced doll they have always wanted. Businesses have been quick to exploit the kidult trend, and the number of toy stores that target adults has risen. Companies are repackaging products from past decades and also bringing out new ones for adults. Lego, for example, has brought out an architectural series featuring landmarks from around the world. Society traditionally disapproves of adults who refuse to put aside childhood interests, viewing the refusal as a sign of social immaturity and irresponsibility. Those who agree with this view sometimes claim that kidults are suffering from the pop-psychology concept known as Peter Pan Syndrome, an anomaly (异常)that people remain emotionally at the level of teenagers. On a grander scale, these kidult opponents (对手)argue that such delayed adulthood causes couples to marry later and have fewer children. This in turn can lead to shrinking national economies, for there needs to be a generational replenishment (补充)of the workforce. From the standpoint of kidults, though, this phenomenon is seen as nothing but harmless fun. Kidults insist that having youthful interests keeps them young, happy and creative, and their refusal to conform to society's acceptable tastes shows independent thinking. Besides, they argue that being part of the social trend of delayed adulthood is not purely a personal choice. The real causes include expensive housing, increased educational requirements for employment and poor work opportunities. Whether the kidult phenomenon will continue to grow or prove to be a passing trend is anyone's guess. As the debate about it continues, remember that there is nothing wrong with being young at heart. 51. What does the kidult phenomenon refer to? A. Adults act like children. B. Adults have child-like tastes. C. Adults go in for collecting toys. D. Adults like playing with children. 52. Which of the following might cause the emergence of kidults? A. Different living conditions. B. More choices about toys. C. High pressure of modern life. D. Good memories of childhood. 53. What does the underlined word “exploit” probably mean? A. Get used to. B. Look forward to. C. Take advantage of. D. Make way for. 54. How does the text deal with the debate about kidults? A. By strongly opposing kidult opponents. B. By convincing readers to accept kidults. C. By refusing to take a stand on the issue. D. By presenting both sides of the argument. 55. What can we infer about the author's attitude towards the phenomenon from the last paragraph? A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Disapproving. D. Uncaring. 第II卷 主观题(共35分) 第四部分: 写作(共两节, 满分35分) 第一节阅读表达(共5小题: 每小题2分, 满分10分) 阅读下面短文,并根据题目要求用英语回答问题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。 “Mom, look at this LEGO Star Wars set,” my eight-year-old son Nathan said. “Can I get it for my birthday?” I looked at the LEGO set in question. “Nathan, this isn’t just a regular LEGO set. It’s an Advent calendar(降临历).” Seeing his questioning look, I explained, “An Advent calendar counts down the days until Christmas. Starting on December 1st, you open one box each day, and each box contains one small LEGO toy.” “I want this really badly, Mom. Can I get it for my birthday?” “Yes, but here’s the problem with that. It’s August right now, and your birthday is in September. If we bought this for your birthday, you couldn’t start opening the toys until December 1st. That would be a long time for you before playing with a new toy. Are you sure you want it?” He thought for a minute and said, “Yes, Mom, I really want that Advent calendar.” So we bought the calendar. On Nathan’s birthday in mid-September, he received many presents, including the Advent calendar. He seemed as surprised and pleased with it as he did with other gifts that were actually a surprise. And then he started to open it. “Remember that’s an Advent calendar. So we can’t open it yet.” His shoulders slumped(垂下来). “Oh, yeah, that’s right,” he said unwillingly. We put the box in his closet. I hoped he’d forget about it, but that was wishful thinking. “How many more days should I wait until I can start opening the toys in the calendar?” he asked the day after his birthday. I gave him a pocket calendar, and we counted how many days there were until December 1st. After waiting for so long, it was December 1st finally. Nathan’s hands were practically shaking as he opened that first box. “I’m so glad I waited, Mom,” he told me. People say that Christmas starts earlier and earlier every year. I know these complaints are about the over-commercialization of the holiday, and I see their point. But this year, Christmas came to our house very early, and it was so much fun. 56. What is an Advent calendar used to do? (no more than 10 words) ________________ 57. Why was the author unwilling to buy the Advent calendar for Nathan at first? (no more than 12 words) ________________ 58. How can we understand the underlined sentence in Paragraph 7? (no more than 8 words) ________________ 59. Why do people say Christmas starts earlier and earlier? (no more than 10 words) ________________ 60. What do you think of Nathan’s birthday present? Why? (no more than 20 words) ________________ 第二节: 书面表达(满分25分) 61. 参考词汇:生活质量: the quality of life 高中生: senior school students 学习任务重: the burden of study 做……是浪费时间: It’s a waste of time to do... However, many senior school students argue that it’s a waste of time to do physical exercise due to the heavy burden of study. In my experience, sports and study actually complement each other. Regular exercise boosts energy levels, allowing us to concentrate better during study sessions. Moreover, physical activities like running or playing basketball effectively relieve stress accumulated from academic pressure. To balance both, I suggest that we should set aside 30 minutes daily for moderate exercise. Simple actions like stretching between study breaks or cycling to school can make a difference. Remember, a healthy body is the foundation of efficient learning. By maintaining this balance, we can achieve both academic success and physical well-being. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
