Are you curious about how healthy your classmates' daily habits really are? A school survey can give you the answer, and it is easier to carry out than you might think. The process itself can also teach you a lot about your classmates. 1________ With a little planning, even a small group of students can collect useful information.
The first step is to decide exactly what you want to find out. A clear question, such as 'How much exercise do students get each week?', is much easier to answer than a broad topic like 'health'. If your question is too broad, you will not know what to do with the answers. A focused question also makes your results much easier to explain later. 2________
Next, design your questionnaire. Keep it short, and use simple language that everyone can understand. Long questionnaires often make readers lose interest before they finish. A questionnaire that takes ten minutes to complete is far more likely to be returned than one that takes an hour. Remember that simple wording saves everyone time and reduces confusion. 3________
Once the answers are collected, you need to organise them. Put the numbers into a chart so that patterns become visible at a glance. A simple bar chart is usually enough for a school project. Colour is helpful, but a clear label matters even more than decoration. 4________
Finally, present your findings and draw a conclusion. Share what you have learned with your class, using a poster or a short talk. 5________ It is also honest to mention the limits of your study. Remember that a survey describes what people do; it does not prove that one habit causes a particular result. A short, honest report is far more useful than an impressive but empty one.
A. This helps you turn a list of numbers into a clear picture.
B. Write only questions that are directly related to your topic.
C. It is better to ask too many questions than too few.
D. A good survey, however, needs careful preparation.
E. If your results surprise you, you may have made a mistake.
F. Most importantly, explain clearly what the results suggest.
G. Ask a few friends to read it first and point out anything unclear.
五、阅读理解
(一)
A recent survey of 500 middle school students looked at how they spend their time and how much they exercise. The results, published in the school magazine, offer a clear picture of teenage daily habits.
According to the data, the average student sleeps about seven hours on a school night. Nearly half of those surveyed said they go to bed after eleven o'clock, usually because they are using their phones. Only one student in five reported getting the eight to nine hours that doctors generally recommend for this age group.
Exercise habits were also mixed. About 60 percent of the students said they took part in some form of sport every week, but fewer than 30 percent exercised for more than an hour each time. The most common activity was walking, followed by running and ball games. Students who exercised regularly were more likely to describe themselves as relaxed and energetic.
When asked what stopped them from being more active, the students gave several answers. The most frequent reason was lack of time, mentioned by 45 percent. Others pointed to heavy homework, the weather, or simply not knowing where to start. Interestingly, fewer than 10 percent said that they disliked exercise itself.
The survey team drew a simple conclusion: most students would like to be healthier, but they need better routines rather than more willpower. The team recommended small, realistic changes, such as going to bed thirty minutes earlier or taking a short walk during a break. These steps, they noted, are easier to keep than sudden, dramatic ones.
1.What does the survey mainly show?
A. Students dislike all forms of exercise.
B. Students' sleeping and exercise habits.
C. How to design a questionnaire.
D. Why doctors recommend eight hours of sleep.
2.According to paragraph 2, why do many students go to bed late?
A. They are busy with homework.
B. They cannot fall asleep early.
C. They are using their phones.
D. They are exercising at night.
3.What do we learn about students' exercise in paragraph 3?
A. Most exercise for more than an hour each time.
B. Fewer than 30 percent exercise over an hour each time.
C. Walking was the least popular activity of all.
D. All of them take part in ball games.
4.What was the most common reason for not being more active?
A. Not having enough time.
B. Disliking exercise itself.
C. The bad weather.
D. Not having a partner.
5.What did the survey team recommend?
A. More willpower and stricter rules.
B. Giving up ball games completely.
C. Sleeping after midnight every day.
D. Small, realistic changes in daily routines.
(二)
Last term our English teacher gave us a project: work in groups and create a poster about healthy living. At first, I thought it would be simple. I soon discovered that a good poster needs much more than colourful paper and neat handwriting.
Our group of four met after school to plan. We spent the first meeting arguing about the topic. One member wanted to focus on food, another on exercise, and I wanted to write about sleep. In the end we chose 'Move More, Sit Less', because it allowed us to include a little of everything.
The next challenge was the design. We decided on a slogan that was short and easy to remember, then divided the poster into three parts: a title, a chart showing how much students exercised, and a few practical tips. Making the chart took longer than we expected, because we had to check our numbers twice.
On presentation day, each group explained their poster to the class. I was nervous, but our chart caught people's attention, and several classmates asked where we had found the data. Our teacher praised the clear layout, though she suggested we use fewer words next time.
Looking back, I learned more from this project than from any textbook. I now understand how to collect information, work with others and present an idea clearly. More importantly, I have started walking to school instead of taking the bus — a small change, but one that came directly from our own poster.
6.What was the project the teacher gave the class?
A. To write a report about exercise.
B. To make a poster about healthy living.
C. To interview doctors about sleep.
D. To design a new school magazine.
7.Why did the group choose the topic 'Move More, Sit Less'?
A. It was the teacher's suggestion.
B. It was the shortest topic they could find.
C. It allowed them to include several ideas.
D. It was the only topic everyone disliked.
8.What took longer than expected?
A. Choosing the slogan.
B. Writing the title.
C. Printing the poster.
D. Making the chart.
9.How did the writer feel on presentation day?
A. Nervous but pleased with the result.
B. Angry with the other group members.
C. Confident from the very beginning.
D. Bored by the other groups' posters.
10.What did the writer do after the project?
A. Started taking the bus to school.
B. Gave up walking completely.
C. Began walking to school.
D. Joined a new English class.
