Unit 3 Work and play
Part A Let’s spell 第三课(教学设计)
I. Teaching Objectives
1、By the end of the lesson, students can hear, say and read the new words with "ie" and "igh": night, light, right, tight, high, pie, tie, lie.
2、Students can find out that "ie" and "igh" both make the /aɪ/ sound, and can sort words by this sound.
3、Students can listen and write the key words in sentences, and write one sentence using words with "ie" or "igh".
II. Key Points and Difficult Points
1、Key point: the /aɪ/ sound of the letter combinations "ie" and "igh", and the reading and spelling of night, light, right, tight, high, pie, tie and lie.
2、Difficult point: the two spellings share one sound. Students often mix up when to write "ie" and when to write "igh", and miss letters when spelling these words.
III. Teaching Tools
Word cards, pictures (a baker, some pies, the moon at night), the recording, PowerPoint slides, a worksheet and a soft ball for the chant.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warm-up and lead-in (5 mins)
1、I say some old words with /aɪ/ (I, my, sky, hi, five) and students clap once on each word they can hear the /aɪ/ in.
2、I write light and night on the board, ask what they can see, and lead in today's two spellings: "ie" and "igh".
[Purpose] Wake up the old /aɪ/ sound so the new spellings have something to hang on.
Step 2: Listen, repeat and chant (10 mins)
1、Students listen to the baker chant twice. The first time they just listen, the second time they hum along.
2、Students read the chant and circle every word with "ie" or "igh" (night, pies, lie, light, tight, right).
3、We clap the beat and read it aloud together, once slowly, once fast, once in a funny voice.
[Purpose] The rhythm helps students feel the /aɪ/ sound inside real words before we name the rule.
Step 3: Read and say, then listen and tick (8 mins)
1、In pairs, students read the four groups of words aloud: high/right, pie/tie, lie/light, light/night.
2、They listen and tick the word they hear in each group, then check in pairs.
[Purpose] Train the ear to pick a word by its sound, not just by its shape.
Step 4: Listen, write and say (8 mins)
1、Students listen and complete the three sentences on the worksheet (I like eating pies. / I eat them every night. / It's not right to eat too many pies.).
2、They read the filled sentences back to their partner.
[Purpose] Move from hearing the sound to writing the right letters.
Step 5: Write a sentence (6 mins)
Students write one sentence using some words with "ie" or "igh", then read it to the class.
[Purpose] Let students use the sound in their own words.
Step 6: Homework
1、Read the chant to your family three times.
2、Find two more words with "ie" or "igh" and write them down.
V. Board Design
Center: ie /aɪ/ igh (same sound, two spellings)
Left: night light right tight high | Right: pie tie lie
Bottom: One night, a baker makes some pies. He doesn't lie down and works till light.
