Last September, my best friend Daniel and I had the worst quarrel of our lives. We had been like brothers since primary school, but a small thing — I forgot to return his basketball before his game — exploded into a bitter argument. "You never take our friendship seriously," he said, and then he walked away.
For two weeks, we said nothing to each other. Sitting beside him in class became so awkward that I began to hate going to school. I tried to explain, but every time I opened my mouth, words failed me. I suffered a lot, wondering whether a friendship of ten years could end over a basketball.
Then one evening, my mother found me staring at Daniel's old photo and said, "Friendship, like a garden, needs water. Saying sorry is not losing — it is watering." Her words struck me. So I sat down and wrote Daniel a long, frank letter, describing exactly how I felt, without blaming anyone.
The next morning, I put the letter in his desk. At lunchtime, he came up to me with the basketball in his hands and said with an awkward smile, "I'm in the wrong, too. I judged you too quickly." We both laughed, and after that day, our friendship grew even stronger.
24.What caused the quarrel between the writer and Daniel?
A.The writer broke Daniel's basketball.
B.The writer forgot to return Daniel's basketball.
C.Daniel lost the basketball game.
D.The writer refused to play basketball with Daniel.
25.How did the writer feel during the two weeks?
A.Relaxed and free.
B.Angry and confident.
C.Awkward and painful.
D.Excited and hopeful.
26.What did the writer's mother mean by "watering" a friendship?
A.Friendship needs care and effort.
B.A garden is more important than a friend.
C.Saying sorry means losing.
D.Time alone can solve all problems.
27.What can we learn from the story?
A.Daniel apologized first.
B.Writing a letter helped mend their friendship.
C.The two boys never spoke again.
D.The basketball was never given back.

How many hours does it take to turn a stranger into a friend? A study by Professor Jeffrey Hall of the University of Kansas tried to answer the question. After interviewing more than 300 people, he found that it takes about 50 hours of time together to move from a casual (泛泛的) acquaintance to a real friend, more than 90 hours to become a close friend, and over 200 hours to become a best friend.
Hall also found that what really matters is not the amount of time but the way it is spent. Long hours spent watching TV together, he says, do not build much friendship; hours spent talking, joking or having deep conversations do. "You cannot simply put two people in the same room and expect them to become friends," he explains. "Friendship grows out of sharing — sharing feelings, opinions and experiences."
The study has a special message for teenagers. Many of them today have hundreds of "friends" on social media but few people they can turn to when they are in trouble. Experts call such friendships "shallow". According to Hall, online contact, however convenient, is no substitute (替代品) for face-to-face time.
Hall's advice is simple: choose the people you care about, put down your phone, and spend real time with them. "Friendship is not made of hours on a screen," he says. "It is made of moments when you are truly together."
28.How many hours does it take to become a best friend?
A.About 50. B.About 90.
C.More than 200. D.Over 300.
29.According to Hall, what matters most in building a friendship?
A.The amount of time spent together.
B.The way the time is spent.
C.The number of friends you have.
D.The ages of the two people.
30.Why are many teenagers' online friendships called "shallow"?
A.They take up too much of their time.
B.They are usually begun by strangers.
C.They cannot take the place of face-to-face time.
D.They make teenagers feel tired and lonely.
31.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Making Friends: It Takes Time and Attention
B.Social Media: A New Way to Make Friends
C.Why Teenagers Need More Friends Online
D.How to Choose a Best Friend at School
D
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain, is often described as "the great American novel". But for many readers, its most unforgettable part is the friendship between Huck, a homeless white boy, and Jim, a black slave who runs away to seek freedom.
The two meet on a small island in the Mississippi River. Both are escaping — Huck from a violent father, Jim from being sold to another owner. Together they build a raft and begin their journey down the river. During the long days on the water, an unlikely friendship takes shape: Huck learns to respect Jim as a kind, honest and caring man, and Jim treats the boy like his own son.
The novel reaches its high point when Huck faces a hard choice. In the society of his time, helping a slave escape was considered wrong; returning Jim to his owner would be "the right thing". Huck thinks about it, and finally decides to help his friend even if it means being punished. "All right, then, I'll go to hell," he says — and chooses friendship over the rules of his world.
Through thick and thin, the two stay together. Their journey speaks volumes about the theme of the book: real friendship has nothing to do with skin colour, wealth or social position. It is built on trust and shared suffering.
32.What do Huck and Jim have in common?
A.They are both slaves.
B.They are both escaping from something.
C.They come from the same family.
D.They are both from big cities.
33.What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A.How the two met and became friends.
B.Why the river was dangerous.
C.Where the island was.
D.How Huck's father treated him.
34.What does Huck's decision at the high point show?
A.He cared more about the rules than his friend.
B.He valued friendship above society's rules.
C.He wanted to be punished by others.
D.He was afraid of losing his raft.
35.What is the theme of the book according to the passage?
A.Slavery in American history.
B.Travelling down the Mississippi River.
C.Friendship built on trust rather than social position.
D.The adventures of a runaway boy.

Some friendships last a lifetime, while others end quietly. 36 Here is some advice from an expert on teenage friendship.

Never laugh at your friend's secret. If a friend shares something private with you, keep it to yourself. 39
Say sorry when you are in the wrong. 40 A true friend values honesty more than pride.
Finally, be patient. Everyone has bad days. Give your friend time, and the friendship will grow stronger.
A.What a friend usually needs is a pair of listening ears.
B.Many friendships are broken simply because neither side speaks.
C.But do not send too many messages or call at midnight.
D.A sincere apology can smooth out even a serious quarrel.

第二节(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Friendship is one of the most valuable things in life. Yet 81 (maintain) a good friendship is not always easy. Like a garden, it needs care, water and patience, 82 it will slowly dry up.
The 83 (important) quality of a good friend is honesty. A friend who always tells the truth, even when the truth is uncomfortable, is far 84 (value) than one who says only pleasant words. Besides honesty, listening matters. When a friend shares his troubles, 85 (offer) advice too quickly may do more harm than good. Sometimes what he needs most is simply someone 86 will listen quietly.
87 (be) a good friend also means learning to say sorry. Many friendships 88 (break) simply because neither side is willing to admit his mistake. A sincere apology, 89 simple it may be, can smooth out even a serious quarrel.
Finally, remember that friendship grows 90 sharing. The hours we spend talking, laughing and even quarrelling together are the very moments that make a friendship strong.

细节理解题。由第二段“what really matters is not the amount of time but the way it is spent”可知,重要的是时间如何度过。故选B。
30.Why are many teenagers' online friendships called "shallow"?
A.They take up too much of their time.
B.They are usually begun by strangers.
C.They cannot take the place of face-to-face time.
D.They make teenagers feel tired and lonely.
【答案】C
细节理解题。由第三段“online contact, however convenient, is no substitute for face-to-face time”可知,网络友谊无法替代面对面的相处,故被称作“肤浅”。故选C。

Friendship is one of the most valuable things in life. Yet 81 (maintain) a good friendship is not always easy. Like a garden, it needs care, water and patience, 82 it will slowly dry up.

Dear Chris,
I'm sorry to hear that you and your best friend have fallen out over something small. I know how painful it feels when a good friendship is on the rocks.
Here are my suggestions. First, do not let pride stand in the way — a short message or a frank talk can smooth out most misunderstandings. Second, invite him to do something you both enjoy, such as playing basketball or watching a film, and apologize sincerely if you are in the wrong.
I'm sure your friendship will recover soon. Write to me if you need a listening ear.
Yours,
Li Hua

【Text 1】
M: Would you like to go to the new café with me this afternoon, Anna?
W: I'd love to, but I have to say sorry to my best friend. We had a quarrel yesterday, and she is really angry with me.
【Text 2】
W: You look unhappy, Jack. What's the matter?
M: I had a big argument with my roommate. Now we don't talk to each other. It feels so awkward when we meet in the room.
【Text 3】
M: Have you contacted Lucy since she moved away?
W: Yes. We chat online every weekend, and I write to her blog. True friendship never dies, does it?
【Text 4】
W: My brother said something horrible to me yesterday and refused to apologize.
M: Don't judge him too quickly. Maybe he was just too tired to think clearly.
【Text 5】
M: I'm afraid my friendship with Peter is on the rocks. He seems to ignore me now.
W: Why not invite him to play basketball this Saturday? Doing something together may help you two recover your friendship.
【Text 6】
W: Tony, you look terrible. What's going on?
M: I had a misunderstanding with my best friend Mike. He thought I broke his camera on purpose, but it was an accident.
W: Did you explain it to him?
M: I tried, but he exploded with anger and walked away.
W: You know, a person in the wrong is usually the one who is angriest. Give him a couple of days.
M: But I'm afraid of losing him as a friend.
W: Then write him a frank note explaining what really happened. Most friends value honesty more than anything else.
M: You're right. I'll put it in his school bag tonight.
【Text 7】
M: Hi, Mary. Are you free this Saturday? We're planning a surprise party for Emma.
W: A surprise party? Great! She's been a bit unhappy since her best friend moved away.
M: Right. So we want to cheer her up. Could you bring some snacks and drinks?
W: Sure. What about a gift?
M: Let's each write a card and collect them in a big box — something money can't buy.
W: Lovely idea. Where will the party be held?
M: In my flat, at six in the evening. Don't tell Emma anything!
【Text 8】
W: Excuse me, I'm looking for a book about friendship for my friend's birthday.
M: This one is popular among teenagers. It tells the story of two boys travelling down a river on a raft.
W: That's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, isn't it? My friend loves adventure stories. How much is it?
M: Forty yuan, and we'll give you a nice card for free.
W: Great, I'll take it.
【Text 9】
W: Grandpa, you and Mr. Li have been friends for over fifty years. What's the secret?
M: Through thick and thin, my dear. We've shared the good times and the bad ones.
W: Didn't you two ever quarrel?
M: Of course. But when you respect each other, an apology is never difficult.
W: I see. I'll remember that when my best friend and I disagree.
