Unit3 Healthy Life
Part A Let's talk 第一课(教案)
I. Teaching Objectives
1. By the end of the period, most students are able to listen to, speak and use the key expressions have a bad cold, runny nose, head hurts, feel ill, see a doctor and go to hospital to describe how a person feels.
2. Students can catch the main information in the phone conversation between Mike and Binbin and finish the True/False tasks in Let's try, and tell the class which sentence gives the answer.
3. Students can offer simple health advice with should in pairs, and begin to reflect on what a healthy lifestyle really means to them.
II. Key Points and Difficult Points
Key points: the illness vocabulary (ill, feel, cold, runny nose, hurt, hospital, doctor) and the two core sentences — How do you feel? / I feel ill. I have a runny nose and my head hurts.
Key points: giving advice with You should + verb, for example You should see a doctor / drink some water / have a rest.
Difficult point: the third-person form hurts in my head hurts, and choosing advice that actually fits a problem when talking on the phone.
III. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Warm-up and Lead-in (about 5 mins)
1. Greet the class, then show the three pictures on the unit opener (boys playing basketball, a plate of healthy food, children playing a parachute game). Ask: What makes a healthy life? Let pairs brainstorm and write their ideas on the board.
2. Write the big question What is a healthy lifestyle? on the blackboard, then narrow it down to today's sub-question: How do we know we are ill?
[Purpose] To bring back topic words and background knowledge, and to move the class from the unit theme to today's lesson in a natural way.
Step 2 Pre-listening — Let's try (about 5 mins)
1. Show the picture of Mike on the phone and ask: Is Mike OK? How does he look? Let students guess what the phone call will be about.
2. Play the recording. Students judge T/F: 1) Mike has a runny nose. 2) Mike should go home. Check the answers and ask which line gives the clue.
[Purpose] To train prediction and listening for key information, so that the main dialogue is not too hard for the students to follow.
Step 3 While-listening — Let's talk (about 10 mins)
1. First listening: students follow the text and circle every word about illness (cold, runny nose, head hurts, hospital).
2. Second listening: students answer two questions — How does Mike feel? and What should Mike do?
3. Read after the recording. Notice the worried tone in Binbin's voice and the short rising Hello? that people use when they pick up the phone.
[Purpose] To help students understand the whole dialogue through the guiding questions and to imitate authentic tone and rhythm.
Step 4 Language Focus (about 8 mins)
1. Sort the sentences on the board into two groups — Symptoms (I feel ill. My head hurts. I have a runny nose.) and Advice (You should see a doctor / drink some water / have a rest.)
2. Drill should + base verb: the teacher states a small problem, and students answer with a piece of advice.
3. Point out the third-person -s in my head hurts, then read the two groups aloud together.
[Purpose] Language is only internalised when it is used. This step changes the input from the dialogue into short, controlled practice for the whole class.
Step 5 Production — Pair Work (about 9 mins)
1. Look at the FEEL word web (happy, sad, cold, hungry, plus words the students add themselves). In pairs, build a new phone call, for example: How do you feel? — I'm not feeling well. I feel cold and I have a runny nose. — You should drink some water and have a rest.
2. Each pair acts out its dialogue in front of the class; the audience gives one compliment and one suggestion.
[Purpose] To give students a real chance to use the target language freely, to talk about feelings and to give advice to the people around them.
Step 6 Summary and Homework (about 3 mins)
1. Students finish the sentence Today I can talk about ____ and give advice with ____. Remind them that rest, water and exercise are all part of a healthy life.
2. Homework: (1) read the dialogue aloud three times and record yourself; (2) write two or three sentences about someone who is not feeling well and the advice you would give them.
