W: I bought these hiking boots from your shop, but the bottoms cracked during a hike. Can I return them?
M: Absolutely, if they haven’t been used. However, if they’ve been worn outdoors, we’ll need your receipt and to see the damage.
W: The receipt is here. The trail I hiked was listed as “beginner-friendly” on your website. Does that make a difference?
M: It does, but only if the damage occurred within the first three days of purchase. Since these were bought 10 days ago. It doesn’t apply.
W: What are my choices then?
M: We can repair them for free or offer a 50% discount toward a new pair.
W: I’d prefer a refund. The tag says “30-day return policy.”
M: I’m afraid that policy is for items returned in new condition. Since the boots are damaged, our repair policy applies.

11. Why was the building’s recycling rejected last winter?
A. Food stains on cardboard. B. No cardboard included. C. Plastic mixed with bottles.
12. Where is a colored wine bottle recycled?
A. At the regular green bins. B. At the downtown center. C. At the Maple Street site.
13. What is the rule for dealing with broken mirrors?
A. Place them in green bins. B. Put them with regular trash. C. Take them to a special site.
C 12. B 13. C
M: This new recycling guide is confusing. Why can’t we put pizza boxes in the paper bin? They’re made of cardboard!
W: Because of oil stains. Even a little food left on them means the whole lot can’t be recycled. Remember what happened last winter?
M: You mean when the collection truck refused our building’s bins? But that was plastic bags mixed with bottles!
W: It’s the same kind of problem. Now, for glass — only clear bottles go in green bins. Colored glass must go to the downtown center.
M: That’s a 40-minute drive! What if I clean wine bottles very carefully?
W: I’m afraid not. Colored glass needs a different recycling process. No exceptions.
M: What about broken mirrors? The guide doesn’t say.
W: Those are harmful waste. Wrap them in old newspaper and take them to the special collection point on Maple Street.
M: This new system is much more complicated than the one in our old town.

A. Find TechHub contact. B. Practice her presentation. C. Request company data
A 15. C 16. B 17. B
W: I wouldn’t have applied for this job if I knew it required past experience with data. My training only taught me basic Excel skills.
M: Don’t worry. The HR team called you for an interview, so they believe you have potential.
W: Maybe a little, but I’m really nervous about the computer test tomorrow. What if I can’t complete the task?
M: Then focus on what you’re good at. The report you wrote for Professor Lee’s project was excellent. Use its structure as an example — we can use public datasets and adjust them.
W: That might work. Thank you. Let’s meet at the library at 7. By the way, does your roommate still work at TechHub? He might know what kind of test it is.
M: He left last month, but I’ll ask around. For now, practice presenting — being confident is more important than being perfect.
W: You’re right. I’ll practice by myself later. I hope all this hard work will be worth it.

18. What will be built first?
A. Wider walking areas. B. New market stands. C. More bike paths.
19. How much must the locals raise for the bike path?
A. $300,000. B. $400,000. C. $500,000.

A 19. C 20. A
W: Good evening! This is City Update. The city council has approved the Riverside Project and has even added $2 million to protect the old markets in the downtown area. Work will begin next month. The first steps will include making wider walking areas and installing solar-powered street lights. However, there are still some problems. Although the money will cover 80% of the costs, local stores are worried that long-term road work will keep customers away. To help these businesses, the city will set up temporary market stands in nearby parks and provide free bus service during rush hours. Environmental groups are not satisfied because the plan didn’t add more bike paths. But in a surprise move, yesterday’s updated plan added a 5-kilometer bike path along the river — on the condition that local people can raise $500,000 by October. This special condition has led to strong opinions and lively discussions at recent public meetings. On the positive side, the project will create more than 300 jobs, especially for people with experience in construction. Training programs will start next week at the local training school. Anyone who is interested can register online or go to the community center before Friday. Stay tuned for more news!

Djukic is a biology and chemistry student at John Carroll University. She never thought that one day she would be in a classroom where an English teacher asked her to play a board game in order to learn about climate change.
Debra Rosenthal is the professor of the class. At first, Djukic said she was uncertain about Rosenthal’s board game idea. “I was just like: ‘this is interesting, but how much are we actually going to take away from it?”
Rosenthal thought her students would gain a greater understanding about how their own ideas and experiences affect climate change. Students do not compete against each other. They work together to choose the best plan of action. The game is different from board games such as Monopoly, where the goal is to win. Rosenthal said she hoped the games would give students a chance to talk about climate change in a new way.
“By playing the games, it’s a way to be social, to engage in conversation. There has to be a lot of energy around the table. It’s very collaborative. And in the game that I chose to play, they really were able to work together and try to come up with a solution so that the planet was not destroyed.”
During the class, she said, students laughed, disagreed and had to call for votes as a way to decide how to move forward in the game. Djukic said it was a “way to have fun...while also learning about such a serious subject.”
The games are global, Djukic said. That is because she and her classmates said they were able to see how one player’s decision about agriculture affected another player on the other side of the world.
She said the games showed her that “in the game of climate change and the climate crisis, no individual wins.” “It’s either we all suffer from this, or we all somehow collaborate to work our way out of this and turn the clock back on climate change.”
24. What is the purpose of Rosenthal’s class arrangement?
A. To inspire the competition among students.
B. To entertain the students with the board game.
C. To stress the damage caused by climate change.
D. To encourage student’s viewpoints about climate change.
25. Which best describes the board game according to paragraph 4?
A. Cooperative. B. Competitive. C. Creative. D. Exclusive.
26. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Agriculture is of vital importance to the world.
B. The world is a community of shared future.
C. Man with strong will can conquer nature.
D. Climate change is a tough problem to solve.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

China on Monday successfully launched the Tianzhou-10 cargo spacecraft (货运飞船) from the Wenchang Space Launch Site, carrying not only supplies for the Chinese space station, but also a pioneering study on the development of “artificial embryos (胚胎)” in space. The mission marks the world’s first attempt to investigate how embryo-like structures develop under real microgravity and universal radiation conditions.
Tianzhou-10 carried 67 scientific items weighing more than 768 kilograms to support 41 space science experiments. These projects include life sciences, biotechnology, microgravity physics, astronomy, and Earth science. Among them, the embryo experiment has drawn particular attention.
Yu Leqian, the artificial embryo project’s manager, explained that real human embryos are extremely difficult to obtain for large-scale scientific research. Artificial embryos are structures constructed from stem cells that closely look like real embryos. They are not true embryos and cannot develop into an individual human being, but they help study early human embryonic development.
According to Yu, the embryo models used in the experiment correspond roughly to a crucial stage of human development between days 14 and 21 after fertilization (受精). It is an extremely important developmental window. Within just a few days, the early forms of all organs begin to develop. Many early development-related diseases, such as deformities and born heart disease, are closely associated with this period. The goal of the research is to understand how gravity shapes life itself and what effects space conditions may have on this critical process.
During the mission, the artificial embryos will develop for five days aboard the station under the monitoring of Chinese astronauts. Automated systems will replace nutrient solutions daily. Samples will be frozen in orbit and later returned to Earth for detailed laboratory analysis.
“This is our first attempt to answer whether humans can survive and reproduce in space. I hope the answer will be yes,” Yu said.
28. Why has the artificial embryo project attracted particular attention?
A. It covers five major research fields. B. It helps explore the origin of embryos.
C. It aims to cure humans of genetic diseases. D. It is the first artificial embryo research in space.
29. What do we know about artificial embryos from Yu Leqian?
A. They are made from human embryos. B. They are widely used in space research.
C. They are an alternative to real embryos. D. They are able to grow into human beings.
30. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A. Gravity can be ignored in the embryo experiment.
B. Space conditions may affect early organs’ forming.
C. Artificial embryos will be put into mass production.
D. Artificial embryos may be free from human diseases.
31. What is Yu’s attitude to artificial embryos research in space?
A. Critical. B. Positive. C. Unconcerned. D. Worried.
D 29. C 30. B 31. B

One night in May 2023, a group of people from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) gathered around a computer monitor on a rooftop. The monitor was linked to equipment that could receive transmissions from a satellite. Around 10 pm, they got a signal. On their monitor, the scientists watched as their equipment turned solar energy into electrical power.
The experiment was a success. But it’s just a first step. Eventually, the scientists hope to gather the sun’s energy in giant satellites orbiting Earth and beam it down to the power grid (网格). Solar panels in space would produce a constant stream of power.
The idea of solar space stations isn’t new. Science fiction writers thought of it years ago. The problem is getting these power stations into space. The glass solar panels would have to be huge. The cost of launching the parts into orbit would be tremendous. So the Caltech scientists are creating a new kind of solar panel. This one is made out of lightweight materials. And they’re replacing large antennas with tiny ones.
Caltech is not the only organization that’s interested in solar power stations. China is planning a mission in 2028 to test its technology. And the European Space Agency is looking to build gigantic solar space stations. For now, the Caltech scientists will continue with their experiments. Their satellite managed to send some energy to Earth. But other parts didn’t work.
However, the recent experiment proved that the technology works in space. With more research, it could reach commercial use in the coming decades.
The biggest obstacle to building solar power stations in space is not the technology. Launching the materials is too expensive. And that’s changing. The aerospace company SpaceX has been testing reusable rockets. Reusing rockets will bring down the cost of a launch. The cost of gathering solar energy and sending it to Earth will be less. And that will make it more practical.
32. What did the Caltech scientists successfully do in the May 2023 experiment?
A. They built a system to charge a laptop from space.
B. They unfolded the frame for solar panels in space.
C. They transmitted solar energy from space to Earth’s power grid.
D. They transformed space-collected sunlight into usable electricity.
33. Why does the author mention China and the European Space Agency’s plans?
A. To praise Caltech’s advanced technology.
B. To compare their technologies with Caltech’s.
C. To show global interest in space solar power.
D. To predict the commercial use of solar stations.
34. What contributes to the future use of space solar power?
A. The faster progress of technology. B. The lighter weight of solar panels.
C. The lower cost of launching materials. D. The greater support from the government.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The breakthrough of SpaceX rockets. B. An experiment on space solar energy.
C. Global efforts to build space power stations. D. A successful space exploration by scientists.
D 33. C 34. C 35. B

Giving and receiving positive feedback
Your manager called you and said she would want to discuss your performance in recent projects. ____36____. On Monday morning, when you walked into her office, she first praised your excellent work, and you immediately got ready — is this a common setting for the frightening “feedback sandwich”? You are very familiar with this pattern: starting with praise, offering genuine criticism, and ending with more praise.
____37____. However, when feedback follows this predictable formula, employees begin to see praise as a filler for criticism, depriving it of its true meaning. Positive feedback is better than being downgraded to a buffer (缓冲) responsibility. It should be used independently as a tool for motivation. Below are three tips to help you make positive feedback count.
● Separate positive from negative feedback
When praise always comes before criticism, it loses its power. ____38____. Let it be offered without a shadow — no comparison, no subtle correction. Just the simple, honest act of appreciation.
● ____39____
Psychologist Carol Dweck emphasized our brain’s adaptability and our capacity to develop new abilities. Rather than praising fixed traits like “you have a natural eye for detail,” focus on the process — celebrating effort, creative approaches, and problem-solving persistence.
● Create a culture of offering positive feedback
Integrate positive feedback into daily interactions, not just formal reviews. Offer casual appreciation during hallway conversations or coffee breaks. Encourage team members to recognize each other’s contributions. ____40____.
Transforming a workplace skeptical of positive feedback takes patience, but the rewards extend beyond improved performance to a genuinely enriched professional life.
A. Praise a creative mindset
B. Develop a growth mindset
C. She began criticizing without hesitation
D. Ensure that praise sometimes exists independently
E. Such habits create an environment where praise flows in all directions
F. You spend the entire weekend anxious and question what you did wrong
G. Many managers use this technique, wrapping negative feedback between two positives
F 37. G 38. D 39. B 40. E
上文“Your manager called you and said she would want to discuss your performance in recent projects.( 你的经理打电话给你,说她想和你谈谈你近期项目的表现。)” 下文“On Monday morning, when you walked into her office…(周一早上,当你走进她的办公室时…)” F选项“You spend the entire weekend anxious and question what you did wrong.(你整个周末都很焦虑,怀疑自己是不是哪里做错了。)”
上文“You are very familiar with this pattern: starting with praise, offering genuine criticism, and ending with more praise.( 你对这种模式非常熟悉:先以赞扬开始,接着给出真诚的批评,最后再以更多的赞扬结束。)” 下文“However, when feedback follows this predictable formula, employees begin to see praise as a filler for criticism, depriving it of its true meaning.( 然而,如果反馈遵循这种可预测的模式,员工就会将赞扬视为批评的填充物,从而剥夺了其真正的意义。)” G选项“Many managers use this technique, wrapping negative feedback between two positives.(许多管理者使用这种技巧,把负面反馈夹在两段正面评价之间。)”
上文“When praise always comes before criticism, it loses its power. (当赞扬总是先于批评出现时,它就会失去效力。)”提到赞美总是放在批评前面就会失去力量。下文“Let it be offered without a shadow — no comparison, no subtle correction.( 让它自然地呈现出来——不要比较,不要微妙的纠正。)”
下文“Rather than praising fixed traits like “you have a natural eye for detail,” focus on the process — celebrating effort, creative approaches, and problem-solving persistence.( 与其称赞诸如“你天生就善于关注细节”这类固定特质,不如关注过程——赞美努力、创新的方法以及解决问题的毅力。)”
段落主旨“Create a culture of offering positive feedback(营造积极反馈的文化。)”上文“Integrate positive feedback into daily interactions, not just formal reviews. Offer casual appreciation during hallway conversations or coffee breaks. Encourage team members to recognize each other’s contributions.( 将积极反馈融入日常交流中,而不仅仅是形式上的评估。在走廊交谈或咖啡休息时间里给予随意的赞赏。鼓励团队成员相互认可彼此的贡献。)”提到把赞美融入日常交流、走廊闲聊、鼓励同事互相认可。E选项“Such habits create an environment where praise flows in all directions.(这些习惯会营造出赞美四处流动的环境。)”

bring… to life为固定短语,意为“使……栩栩如生,使……活跃起来”。故填to。
故填what。
故填most revolutionary。
require… to do… 故填to generate。
故填a。
·Plan A: Invite international students to cook their traditional dishes
·Plan B: Hold a Chinese calligraphy workshop for foreign visitors
(1)写作词数应为100个左右;
Dear Chairman,
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Chairman,
Regarding the cultural exchange event for the Open Day next month, I’d like to recommend Plan A — the cooking workshop.
Food breaks down linguistic barriers, enabling international students to share their family traditions while visitors explore exotic flavors. Unlike calligraphy, which primarily appeals to visual appreciation, cooking engages multiple senses, promising higher participation. Additionally, the hands-on process naturally promotes cross-cultural communication.
My concrete suggestion is to reserve the school kitchen from 14:30 to 16:00, and prepare fresh ingredients, disposable plates, and cups for approximately 30 participants, ensuring both safety and enjoyment.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Chairman,
With the annual campus Open Day approaching, I firmly believe Plan B — the calligraphy workshop — offers the most rewarding experience for our cross-cultural event.
Calligraphy serves as a window into traditional Chinese philosophy, offering foreign visitors an authentic cultural immersion. Compared with cooking, it demands no fire or complex equipment, making it safer and simpler to organize. Moreover, participants can take home their creations, transforming a brief activity into a lasting souvenir.
For practical arrangement, I suggest holding it in the art room from 10:00 to 12:00, with brushes, ink and paper prepared in advance.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Colt, a 26-year-old electrician on vacation in central Arizona, set out to hike a remote trail in the Superstition Mountains by himself. He parked his car by the trailhead near Canyon Lake and started hiking. Accustomed to hiking the shaded, cooler trails near his home, Colt was undone by the intense heat of Arizona’s exposed sun. After five hours, he found himself lost and out of water. Lightheaded, he texted his wife, “I need help. ”
But his text didn’t go through; his phone had no service. Colt ate his soft fruit candies bite by bite, fearing they would be his last meal. He thought of his wife and their daughter, hoping that he would get to see them again. Desperate, he fired for help from the signal gun he carried to scare off bears — a final call for help.
The sound carried across the rocks to Zeto, a 57-year-old retired firefighter, enjoying his new hobby — hiking mountain trails in Arizona. He knew target practice was banned there, so he thought the pair of shots might be someone shooting at an animal. But when he heard another pair about half an hour later, Zeto’s instincts (本能) , polished over 30 years responding to calls for help, told him the repeated shots must be a signal for help.
On previous hikes, Zeto had come across other hikers in need. There was a man who fell and bloodied his head, a woman who broke her leg. As a result, he’d started carrying extra supplies in case others needed help. He hiked in the direction of the shots, and about 45 minutes later, climbing over a hill, he came across Colt, lying on his side. He could tell that Colt was confused, lost and in rough shape.
注意:
Zeto knew he must take action quickly.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After almost three tiring hours, they finally made it to Colt’s car.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Zeto knew he must take action quickly. Zeto gave Colt some water and food he’d packed along. In his confused state, Colt mumbled something between ragged breaths, “car...parked...by the lake” , which gave Zeto a fixed destination to aim for: Canyon Lake. Colt was dizzy but could put one foot ahead of the other. Zeto knew the situation was urgent and wanted to take advantage of what strength the younger man had while it lasted. They got moving. But still, Colt grew weaker and weaker. Soon, Zeto had to support Colt so he wouldn’t fall. It made for slow going. They took several short breaks in the shade of the rocks. Zeto was tired from the effort but remained standing. Exhausted as he was, Zeto was determined to get them both to safety.
After almost three tiring hours, they finally made it to Colt’s car. As Colt slipped in and out of consciousness, Zeto found his car keys, pushed him inside and drove to the closest town. Zeto then helped Colt out of the car and into an air-conditioned convenience shop. They sat down and poured some sports drinks down their throats. After a spell, Colt began to feel more like himself: His voice was more distinct, his words no longer nonsense. Eventually, the two drove back to the trailhead where their cars were parked. Zeto assured Colt was well enough to drive back to his family. Then they parted ways in their respective cars. Zeto checked in periodically by phone to make sure Colt arrived safely. It wasn’t the last time the two men spoke. They’ve stayed in touch ever since and became friends.

The city council has approved the river side project, has even added two million dollars to protect the old markets in the downtown area. Work will begin next month. The first steps will include making wider walking areas and installing solar power street lights. However, there are still some problems. Although the money will cover eighty percent of the costs, local stores are worried that long term roadwork will keep customers away. To help these businesses, the city will set up temporary market stands in nearby parks and provide free bus service during rush hours. Environmental groups are not satisfied because the plan didn't add more bike paths, but in a surprise move, yesterday's updated plan added a five kilometre bike path along the river on the condition that local people can raise five hundred thousand dollars by october. This special condition has LED to strong opinions and lively discussions at recent public meetings. On the positive side, the project will create more than three hundred jobs, especially for people with experience in construction. Training programs will start next week at the local training school.
A. Climate change calls for teamwork.
B. Climate change leads to global impact.
C. A board game helps students understand climate issues.
D. A good teacher gives students lifelong benefits.

D. Worried.
