He is a professor who just transferred here last semester, but he is popular among students for his creative teaching methods. There is an extensive range of learning approaches mentioned in the book, including approaches for team research, which might be helpful to you.
W: You mean dividing the students into groups to do research? It’s interesting.
M: I really love this book. Through it you will know how to increase cooperation between students and help them develop their own voice and perspective. That’s what this book focuses on.

18. How many subjects were involved in the study?
A. 40. B. 20. C. 10.
19. What does Dr. Zee suggest people do?
A. Reduce the use of sleep medicine.
B. Sleep with lights off.
C. Sleep with open curtains.
20. What is the talk mainly about?
A. The influence of light on sleep.
B. The benefits of good sleep.
C. The effects of lack of sleep.
B 19. B 20. A
W: A new report says sleeping with the light on could be bad for our health. Researchers said around 40 percent of people sleep with some sort of artificial light. They said even light from a television or an alarm clock could affect our health. Sleeping without any light is more difficult for people who live in cities, where there is a lot of outdoor light at night. The researchers are from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, U.S.A. The lead researcher, Dr. Phyllis Zee, is an expert in sleep medicine. Her team conducted a study of the blood sugar levels of 20 people after nights of sleep. The people who slept with a light on had higher blood sugar levels the next morning compared to those who slept in total darkness. Dr. Zee said this is because light stimulates brain activity, which raises blood sugar levels. She said there are three things we can do to reduce the risk of illness; turn off the lights, use a light-blocking curtain and wear an eye mask.

Working in Southeast Asia for a European company comes with plenty of cross-border differences and challenges. Time zones and public holidays are obvious mismatches. But it’s email that causes the real headache.
Living in Bangkok, I jump between Line, a popular instant communication application, and Gmail, an email service platform, and sometimes get tangled up in the middle, missing emails considered urgent in one timezone and sending emails considered unnecessary in the other. I arrived at a meeting in the Thai capital recently to find that the email I had sent from the taxi to excuse my traffic-related lateness had become a point of discussion around the water cooler. “He sent an email to explain that he was going to be five minutes late? How sweet.” Embarrassment aside, it was a useful reminder of Southeast Asian norms and expectations. Pretty much everyone is late for meetings in Bangkok, so only serious delays require a message-and email is reserved for emergency cancellations.
When my colleagues from London came to visit, I had to explain communication preferences to them. “You need to download Line from Application Store.” Over here, email feels awkward and business-like and more formal: the modern equivalent of a dusty Post Office box that gets checked and cleared into the dustbin every now and again. But Line suits this part of the world, where communication is personal, relationship-based.
There are drawbacks of course. Line IDs are often nicknames or emojis so finding old contacts can demand either a sharp memory or a lot of scrolling. There is no real system for saving messages either, which means the HR and legal teams in London and Paris are often concerned.
However, relying less on email does not mean we abandon a rules-based system. Changing status “On holiday” works just like a regular out-of-office email and formal things are done in person with a paper record.
The world might feel smaller thanks to technology, but cultural differences in communication continue to exist, serving as a constant source of freshness and moments of insight for those who venture abroad. It’s part of what makes travelling and working abroad so rewarding.
24. What does the author find the most challenging?
A. Traveling between time zones. B. Arranging proper holidays.
C. Sending work emails. D. Downloading Line.
25. Why did the author’s email become a point of discussion?
A. It was sent to the wrong person. B. It was considered needless by people.
C. It contained embarrassing information. D. It was canceled at the last minute.
26. Why does the author mention the “dusty Post Office box”?
A. To illustrate email is too official and rarely-used. B. To describe the charm of traditional mail service.
C. To emphasize the trouble of checking dusty mails. D. To explain the development of communication tools.
27. What’s the author’s attitude towards cultural differences in communication?
A. Critical and worried. B. Indifferent and neutral.
C. Positive and appreciative. D. Confused and frustrated.
C 25. B 26. A 27. C

Zhang Peidong, a professor from the Ocean University of China, has been diving for 16 years, exploring the underwater “grasslands” covered with seagrass. These seagrass beds are essential habitats for sea life. However, human activities and changes in the environment have caused a big drop in seagrass beds around the world. In 2008, Zhang and his colleague Li Wentao found a worrying situation in Rongcheng Bay, a key area for seagrass beds in China. The number of overwintering swans had dropped sharply because of the loss of seagrass, a main food source.
Faced with this ecological crisis, Zhang and Li changed their research focus from aquaculture (水产养殖) to seagrass bed restoration, an area that had received little attention at the time. Their efforts were supported by a Weihai-based company, which provided free workshops, office space, housing, and workers for the research team. The company’s general manager noted that many employees, being children of fishermen, were eager to contribute to the restoration efforts.
After years of hard work, the research team developed a way to grow eelgrass seedlings artificially. By understanding the growth patterns and the best seed collection times, they managed to reduce the growing period from nearly three months to just 10 days. The team also created several sets of equipment with independent intellectual property rights to improve planting efficiency.
Over the past 16 years, the research team has taken part in more than 10 seagrass bed restoration projects in China, covering over 1,333 hectares in the Yellow and Bohai Seas. Their efforts have led to the recovery of more than 40% of the seagrass beds in Swan Lake, attracting more swans to the area. The restoration technology has also been used in other provinces, such as Hebei and Liaoning, significantly improving local water quality and biodiversity.
The team’s commitment to seagrass bed restoration has brought new life to underwater ecosystems and set a positive example for ecological conservation efforts globally. Their work highlights the importance of protecting marine habitats and the potential for joint efforts between academia and industry to address environmental challenges.
28. What led to the decline of the overwintering swans?
A. Loss of food sources like seagrass.
B. habitat loss due to human activities.
C. Increased hunting and lead poisoning.
D. Climate change and warmer winters.
29. How did the team help restore the underwater grassland?
A. By protecting existing seagrass beds.
B. By creating new equipment for planting.
C. By shortening the growth period of eelgrass.
D. By developing artificial cultivation technology.
30. Why are the statistics used in Paragraph 4?
A. To show the effectiveness of the restoration efforts.
B. To stress the importance of protecting seagrass beds.
C. To highlight the challenges faced by the researchers.
D. To compare the success of different restoration projects.
31. What does the last paragraph imply?
A. Seagrass restoration is the only solution.
B. The team’s efforts are globally recognized.
C. Cooperation aids environmental protection.
D. Underwater ecosystem remains vital to humans.
A 29. D 30. A 31. C

Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way. The ideals for most philosophical writing are precision, clarity, and the sort of conceptual analysis that leaves no hair un-split.
There is nothing wrong with clarity, precision, and the like-but this isn’t the only way to do philosophy. Outside academic journals, abstract philosophical ideas are often expressed through literature, cinema, and song. There’s nothing that grabs attention like a good story, and there are some great philosophical stories that delight and engage, rather than putting the reader to sleep.
One of the great things about this is that, unlike formal philosophy, which tries to be very clear, stories don’t wear their meanings on their sleeve— they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for the reader to wrestle with.
Consider what philosophers call the metaphysics (形而上学) of race—an area of philosophy that explores the question of whether or not race is real. There are three main positions that you can take on these questions. You might think that a person’s race is written in their genes (a position known as “biological realism”). Or you might think of race as socially real, like days of the week or currencies (“social constructionism”). Finally, you might think that races are unreal— that they’re more like leprechauns (一种魔法精灵) than they are like Thursdays or dollars (“anti-realism”).
A great example of a story taking on race is George S. Schuyler’s novel Black No More. In the book, a Black scientist named Crookman invents a procedure that makes Black people visually indistinguishable from Whites. Thousands of African Americans flock to Crookman’s Black No More clinics and pay him their hard-earned cash to undergo the procedure. White racists can no longer distinguish those people who are “really” White from those who merely appear to be White. In a final episode, Crookman discovers that new Whites are actually a whiter shade of pale than those who were born that way, which kicks off a trend of sunbathing to darken one’s skin— darkening it so as to look more White.
Philosophically rich stories like this bring more technical works to life. They are stories to think with.
32 What is the impression formal philosophy leaves on people according to Paragraph 1?
A. Dull. B. Engaging.
C. Thought-provoking. D. Depressing.
33. Which is the distinction of philosophical stories?
A. They give precise conceptual analysis.
B. They interpret ideas formally and clearly.
C. They seldom express conflicting ideas.
D. They stimulate interest and critical thinking.
34. Which category might “Black No More” in Paragraph 5 fall into?
A. Racial issues caused by skin colors.
B. A society view on race and self-image.
C. Black people accepted by the white society.
D. The origin of sunbathing among white people.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Stories Made Easy B. Positions in Philosophy
C. Stories to Think with D. Nature of Philosophical Writing
A 33. D 34. B 35. C

根据第一段“Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way.(哲学家们向来以表达方式枯燥乏味而饱受诟病。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段“There’s nothing that grabs attention like a good story, and there are some great philosophical stories that delight and engage, rather than putting the reader to sleep.没有什么比一个精彩的故事更能吸引人的注意力了,而且有一些很棒的哲学故事能够令人愉悦并引起共鸣,而不是让读者昏昏欲睡。)”提到哲学故事能吸引注意并令人愉悦且参与其中;第三段“One of the great things about this is that, unlike formal philosophy, which tries to be very clear, stories don't wear their meanings on their sleeve—they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for the reader to wrestle with.(这其中最重要的一点是,与形式哲学不同的是,故事并不会把自己的意思挂在明面上——它们需要解释,而且常常表达出相互矛盾的观点,让读者纠结。)”
通过阅读第五段内容对于“Black No More”的概述,结合关键句“In the book, a Black scientist named Crookman invents a procedure that makes Black people visually indistinguishable from Whites. Thousands of African Americans flock to Crookman’s Black No More clinics ... White racists can no longer distinguish those people who are ‘really’ White from those who merely appear to be White… which kicks off a trend of sunbathing to darken one's skin—darkening it so as to look more White.(在这本书中,一位名叫Crookman的黑人科学家发明了一种能让黑人从外表上看不出与白人区别的手术。

I love thinking about teams. I love thinking about how to create an environment that will make a group of people want to be on the team. I love considering the best ways to build a great team.
Here is one of my favorite team concepts: the sign of a great team is not the absence of conflict. Rather, the sign of a great team is the ability to resolve conflict. ____36____ But our ability to consistently resolve that conflict impacts the kind of team we have more than any other variable. If we learn how to resolve the conflict, the team will be together for very long.
Now, the “how” is the hardest part of conflict resolution. ____37____ But in my experience, the key aspect of consistent conflict resolution comes down to listening and respect. When we listen to each other and respect the opposing perspective (视角), we can have reasonable dialogue. ____38____
That we listen to and respect other perspectives does not mean we always have to agree. ____39____ That's fine. But simple listening skills and demonstrations of respect are at the heart of consistent and reasonable conflict resolution.
Great teams are not on the same page all the time. ____40____ So when you are trying to build a great team or when you think you have one and want to keep it great, spend some time thinking about how you will handle those difficult moments when the team is not on the same page.

上文“Here is one of my favorite team concepts: the sign of a great team is not the absence of conflict. Rather, the sign of a great team is the ability to resolve conflict. (这是我最喜欢的一个团队理念:优秀团队的标志并非是没有冲突,而是具备解决冲突的能力。)”提出了关于优秀团队与冲突关系的核心观点,下文“But our ability to consistently resolve that conflict impacts the kind of team we have more than any other variable. (但相比其他任何因素,我们持续解决冲突的能力对团队的影响都更大。)”强调了解决冲突能力的重要性。G项“这是因为即使是最优秀的团队也不可避免地会产生冲突。”承上启下,“this”指代上文“优秀团队需具备解决冲突能力”的观点,解释了该观点的原因——冲突无法避免,从而自然衔接下文对“解决冲突能力”重要性的论述,逻辑连贯。故选G。
【37题详解】
上文“Now, the ‘how’ is the hardest part of conflict resolution. (如今,如何解决冲突是冲突处理中最难的部分。)”点明了冲突解决的难点在于具体方法,下文“But in my experience, the key aspect of consistent conflict resolution comes down to listening and respect. (但以我的经验来看,持续解决冲突的核心在于倾听和尊重。)”通过转折给出了冲突解决的关键要素。D项“它往往很复杂,通常需要多个步骤。”承接上文,“it”指代“conflict resolution”,进一步说明冲突解决的难度——复杂且步骤多,为下文转折引出核心解决方法做铺垫,符合语境。故选D。
【38题详解】
上文“When we listen to each other and respect the opposing perspective (视角), we can have reasonable dialogue. (当我们彼此倾听、尊重对立的视角时,就能进行理性的对话。)”指出了倾听和尊重能带来理性对话的结果,E项“那么我们就有可能朝着最终解决冲突的方向迈进。”承接上文,“then”承接前文“进行理性对话”的前提,说明该前提能推动冲突走向解决,形成逻辑上的递进,贴合段落关于冲突解决的论述。故选E。
【39题详解】
上文“That we listen to and respect other perspectives does not mean we always have to agree. (倾听并尊重他人的观点,并不意味着我们必须始终达成一致。)”表明了“倾听尊重”与“意见一致”的关系,下文“That's fine. But simple listening skills and demonstrations of respect are at the heart of consistent and reasonable conflict resolution. (这没关系。但简单的倾听技巧和尊重的表现,是持续且理性解决冲突的核心。)”说明意见不一致也不影响冲突解决。A项“我们仍然可以求同存异。”承接上文,对“不必始终达成一致”进行具体阐释,即可以保留不同意见,同时衔接下文“这没关系”的表述,逻辑通顺。故选A。
上文“Great teams are not on the same page all the time. (优秀的团队并非始终意见一致。)”指出优秀团队也会存在分歧,下文“So when you are trying to build a great team or when you think you have one and want to keep it great, spend some time thinking about how you will handle those difficult moments when the team is not on the same page. (因此,当你试图打造一支优秀团队,或者你认为自己已经拥有一支优秀团队并想保持其优秀时,花些时间思考如何处理团队意见不一致的艰难时刻。)”强调了处理分歧的重要性。B项“但优秀的团队知道如何达成共识。”承接上文,通过“but”转折,在承认团队会有分歧的基础上,点明优秀团队的核心能力——懂得如何达成共识,为下文提出“处理分歧”的建议做铺垫,符合文章主旨。故选B。

【答案】例文①
My views on filming short videos on campus
Good morning, everyone!
Today, I’d like to share my thoughts on filming short videos on campus. I believe it has both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, it’s a great way to record beautiful moments and express creativity. On the other hand, it may distract students from their studies and invade others’ privacy, which has a seriously bad influence on students.
Therefore, I suggest we use phones responsibly. Avoid disturbing others, choose appropriate times and places, and always respect privacy. Let’s make our campus a harmonious and inspiring environment.
Thank you!
例文②
My views on filming short videos on campus
Good afternoon, everyone. Recently, I have observed an increasing trend among students who are passionately engaged in filming short videos on campus with smartphones. While it is convenient for us to record our campus life and share amusing moments with creative short videos, excessive addiction to them will undoubtedly distract us from academic tasks, disrupt others’ normal life and even invade personal privacy potentially.
To avoid these problems, I suggest shooting at the right time and place and we should follow school rules and respect others’ feelings. Furthermore, it is recommended that we students should make our videos creatively and responsibly to preserve precious memories and spread positive energy. Most importantly, it is crucial for us to strike a balance between filming short videos and managing our study efficiently, limiting our screen time and prioritizing our own learning and growth.
To sum up, filming short videos on campus is more than creativity and entertainment--it is a golden chance to gain self-improvement and personal growth! Thanks for your listening.
例文③
My views on filming short videos on campus
Good morning, dear classmates!
Today, I’d like to share my thoughts on the phenomenon of filming short videos on campus. While I acknowledge that short videos can be a creative way to record campus life and share memorable moments, there are also some concerns worth addressing.
On one hand, filming short videos allows us to capture beautiful scenes, such as the sunset over the campus lake or the lively atmosphere of sports events. It can also help us relieve stress and express our creativity. However, on the other hand, some students film videos during class or study time, which not only distracts themselves but also affects others’ learning. Moreover, filming without permission may invade others’ privacy.
To balance creativity and responsibility, I have a few suggestions. First, let’s designate specific areas and times for filming, such as the school garden during breaks. Second, always ask for consent before filming others. Finally, respect the learning environment and avoid filming during class.
In conclusion, short videos can be a positive tool if used appropriately. Let’s be responsible creators and enjoy the beauty of campus life while focusing on our studies. Thank you!

Yesterday, my friend Alex and I noticed our next-door neighbor, Mrs. Thompson, looking unusually stressed as she walked in and out of her house. Her car was parked messily in the driveway, and she seemed to be in a hurry.
We decided to ask if she needed any help. As we walked over, she was struggling to carry a large box. I offered to take it from her, and she gratefully handed it to me. She explained that she was moving some of her late(已故的) husband’s things to a storage unit. Her voice trembled as she mentioned her husband, and I could see the pain in her eyes.
Over the next few hours, Alex and I helped her load more boxes into her car. We listened as she shared stories full of love about her husband and the life they had together. It was clear that this was a very emotional time for her. Mrs. Thompson thanked us for the timely help, and for a moment, her face seemed to relax a bit.
However, later in the day, things took a turn. As we were about to leave, we overheard Mrs. Thompson on the phone. She was arguing with someone about money. It seemed that there were some unexpected bills related to the storage unit, and she was worried about how she would pay them.
Alex immediately suggested that we pool our savings to help her, but I hesitated. I had been saving up for a new pair of sneakers(运动鞋) for a long time, and I wasn’t sure if I was ready to give that up. The sneakers were limited edition, and I had been eyeing them for months.

I really wanted those sneakers, yet I knew Mrs. Thompson was in a tough spot. Alex kept looking at me with begging eyes. I felt so torn, my mind full of a mix of guilt and longing. The picture of the cool sneakers kept appearing in my head, but so did Mrs. Thompson’s sad expression. After what seemed like a really long time of struggling inside myself, I took a deep breath and nodded at Alex. We quickly figured out how much money we could give without using up all our savings.
With hearts beating fast, we walked up to Mrs. Thompson with some savings. When we held out the money to her, her eyes opened wide in shock. We told her it was the least we could do and we hoped she could soon go through the hard time. Her thankfulness was really strong, and she gave us both a big hug. In that moment, I realized that the happiness of helping her was much greater than the short-lived excitement of getting those sneakers. The experience taught me that real value isn’t in things we own but in the relationships we make and the kindness we show.

There are drawbacks, of course.
C Positive and appreciative. D. Confused and frustrated.

32. What is the impression formal philosophy leaves on people according to Paragraph 1?
A. Dull. B. Engaging.
C. Thought-provoking. D. Depressing.
33. Which is the distinction of philosophical stories?
A. They give precise conceptual analysis.
B They interpret ideas formally and clearly.
C. They seldom express conflicting ideas.
D. They stimulate interest and critical thinking.
34. Which category might “Black No More” in Paragraph 5 fall into?
A. Racial issues caused by skin colors.
B. A society view on race and self-image.
C. Black people accepted by the white society.
D The origin of sunbathing among white people.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Stories Made Easy B. Positions in Philosophy
C. Stories to Think with D. Nature of Philosophical Writing

A. We can still agree to disagree.
B. But great teams know how to get there.
C. The best relationships take time and effort.
D. It is always complex and often requires multiple steps.
E. Then we are likely to be on our way to eventual resolution.
F. People on a team often work together towards a common goal.
G. That is because even the best teams unavoidable have conflict.
