How do you learn best? For many students, sitting in a classroom and listening to lessons is not the most effective way. More and more teachers believe that “hands-on” activities, where students learn by doing things themselves, can make learning more interesting and meaningful.
Last week, our school held a “Science and Technology Week”. Instead of having normal classes, we took part in various hands-on projects. My group decided to build a model bridge using only straws and tape. At first, we thought it would be easy. We quickly made a simple bridge, but it collapsed as soon as we put a small book on it. We failed.
Our teacher, Mr. Li, didn’t give us the answer. Instead, he encouraged us to observe real bridge pictures and think about the structure. We learned about the importance of a strong base and triangular supports. Then, we went back to work. We redesigned our bridge, adding more supports to make it stronger. This time, when we carefully placed a heavy dictionary on it, the bridge stood firm! We all cheered. We didn’t just learn about physics from a textbook; we felt it and understood it through our own effort.
Another group grew beans in different conditions to learn about what plants need to survive. Some planted beans in the dark, some with no water, and some in the sunlight with enough water. Through this hands-on experiment, they saw with their own eyes how important sunlight and water are for plants.
These activities take more time than just reading, but the knowledge we gain is deeper and lasts longer. When we do things ourselves, we not only remember the facts better, but we also learn how to solve problems, work in teams, and never give up. Hands-on experience turns learning from something we have to do into something we want to do.
29. What happened when the writer’s group first built the bridge?
A. It was very strong and held a dictionary. B. It broke easily under a small weight.
C. Mr. Li built it for them. D. They used wood and glue.
30. How did the writer’s group finally succeed in building the bridge?

D. They used stronger materials.
31. What does the underlined word “collapsed” most probably mean in Chinese?
A. 融化 B. 摔坏 C. 坍塌 D. 跌倒
32. What did the other group’s bean experiment show?
A. Beans can grow everywhere. B. Hands-on experiments are a waste of time.
C. Plants need sunlight and water to live well. D. Growing beans is very easy.

A. Listening to lectures is the best way to learn.
B. Hands-on activities make learning more effective and fun.
C. Building a model bridge is very difficult for students.
D. Science and Technology Week is the most important school event.

Benjamin Franklin was one of the most famous founding fathers of the United States, but he was much more than that. He was a man whose curiosity and “hands-on” spirit led him to achievements in science, invention, and public service.
Born in 1706, Franklin only received two years of formal education. At the age of 12, he started working as an apprentice in his brother’s printing shop. He was a keen reader and taught himself by reading every book he could get. When he was 17, he ran away to Philadelphia and later set up his own printing business, through which he became successful.
Franklin was deeply interested in science. His most famous experiment was the kite experiment. In 1752, he flew a kite with a metal key during a thunderstorm. He wanted to prove that lightning was a form of electricity.
When he saw sparks fly from the key, he understood that he was right. This dangerous experiment led to his invention of the lightning rod, which protects buildings from lightning strikes.
But his curiosity didn’t stop there. He also invented bifocal glasses (so he could see both far and near without changing glasses), the Franklin stove (which heated rooms more efficiently), and he created the first public library, the first fire department, and a university in Philadelphia.
He believed in self-improvement and made a list of 13 virtues, such as honesty, hard work, and simplicity, trying to practice them in his daily life. Franklin’s life story shows us the power of curiosity, self-education, and the desire to make practical contributions to society.
34. What was the main purpose of Franklin’s kite experiment?
A. To invent a new kind of kite for children. B. To prove that lightning is a form of electricity.
C. To enjoy himself during a storm. D. To send a message to a friend.
35. How did Franklin mainly educate himself after his early schooling?
A. By attending a famous university. B. By traveling around the world.
C. By working as a scientist in a lab. D. By reading books widely.
36. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as Franklin’s invention or creation?
A. The lightning rod. B. The telephone.
C. Bifocal glasses. D. The first public library.
37. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. To tell a funny story about Benjamin Franklin’s childhood.
B. To explain how Franklin became the President of the United States.
C. To introduce Franklin’s wide range of achievements and his spirit.
D. To describe only Franklin’s scientific discoveries.

Recently, a sad news story about “blood cats” has made many people in China worried and think deeply.
Some stray cats were caught and forced to give large amounts of their blood. This blood was then sold to pet hospitals for blood transfusions (输血). People call these poor cats “blood cats”.
This is not the right way to treat animals. Cats, like all living creatures, should be treated with kindness. A cat can only safely give a small amount of blood once in a while. But these “blood cats” had far too much blood taken, which is very dangerous and cruel.
This problem shows us a bigger issue: we need to learn how to live in peace with all animals on Earth, both pets and wild animals.
Our Wild Friends Need Help Too
Many wild animals, like pandas, tigers, and elephants, are also in danger. They face serious problems. Their homes are destroyed when forests are cut down. They sometimes can’t find enough food or clean water. Also,
some people hunt them for their fur or other body parts.
What Can We Do?
It is important to remember that animals are our friends. To protect them is to protect ourselves. Here are some things we can do:
·Protect the environment. We can help by keeping their habitats clean and safe.
·Support nature reserves. Governments and groups can build more nature reserves where animals can live safely.
·Stop hunting. There should be laws to stop people from killing endangered animals.
·Be kind to all animals. We should treat pets and stray animals with care and report any bad behavior towards them.
If everyone makes a little contribution, it will make a big difference. Let’s learn to live in peace with all animals.
38. According to the passage, what are “blood cats”?
A. Cats that like the smell of blood.
B. Cats that are sick and need blood transfusions.
C. Stray cats forced to give too much blood for sale.
D. Cats that live in pet hospitals.
39. What is one reason why wild animals are in danger?
A. They don’t have enough friends. B. They are always hungry.
C. Their habitats are being destroyed. D. They are forced to give blood.
40. What does the passage suggest we should do to protect animals?
A. Take all wild animals to zoos. B. Build more nature reserves and stop hunting.
C. Only take care of pet animals. D. Sell stray cats to pet hospitals.
41. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell an interesting story about a pet cat.
B. To explain how to take care of a pet.
C. To discuss animal cruelty and the importance of protecting animals.
D. To describe the different kinds of wild animals in the world.
E
All day long the little boy worked hard, in the field and the barn (畜棚) and the shed. But at sunset there came an hour that was all his own, for his father had given it to him. Then the boy would go to the top of a hill and look across at another hill some distance away. On this far hill stood a house with windows of clear gold and diamonds (钻石). They shone and blazed (发亮光) so much that the boy had to blink (眨眼) as he looked at them.
One day, the boy’s father called him and said, “You’ve been a good boy, and have earned a holiday. Take this day for your own, but remember how hard you have worked for it, and try to learn something good.” The boy thanked his father and kissed his mother. He put a piece of bread in his pocket and started off to find the house with the golden windows. Coming up to the house, he could have wept (哭), for the windows were of clear glass. There was no gold anywhere about them.
A woman came to the door and looked kindly at the boy. She asked him what he wanted. Then the woman shook her head, laughed and called her daughter, a child of his age, and nodded kindly at the two before going back to her work.
“You have come quite the wrong way!” she said. “Come with me, and I’ll show you the house with the golden windows. Then you’ll see for yourself.” When they reached the top of the knoll (小圆丘), the girl turned and pointed. There, on a hill far away, stood a house with windows of clear gold and diamonds, just as he had seen them. But the boy saw that it was his own home!
When he came home, his mother came to kiss him, his little sister ran to throw her arms about his neck, and his father looked up and smiled from his seat by the fire.
“Have you had a good day?” asked his mother. The boy said yes. "And have you learned anything?” asked his father. “Yes!” said the boy. “I have learned that our house has windows of gold and diamonds.”

③ After a while, the people in the house seemed to close them, and then it looked like any common farmhouse.
A. ①②③ B. ①③② C. ③②① D. ③①②
43. What might the boy say to the woman when the woman asked him what he wanted?
A. I saw your golden windows from our hilltop, but now they are only glass.
B. I saw there’s lots of gold from our hilltop, but now I only see glass.
C. I saw lots of diamonds from our hilltop, but now I only see glass.
D. I saw shining diamonds from our hilltop, but now they are only glass.

B. Because his own house could also shine and blaze whenever he saw it.
C. Because his home also had windows of clear gold and diamonds at sunset.
D. Because the girl told him his house had windows of clear gold and diamonds.
45. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A kind girl B. The golden windows
C. The shining diamonds D. A happy family

吹糖人金牌手艺人—熊传发
When Xiong Chuanfa blows a lifelike tiger out of sugar in just minutes, kids look at him in surprise, thinking he is a magician.
Xiong has been blowing sugar figurines (吹糖人) for over twenty years. Blowing sugar figurines is a kind of traditional Chinese folk art with a history of over 600 years.
Every morning, Xiong prepares the sugar and drives to Wanshou Palace in Nanchang to start his “magic show”. He heats (加热) the sugar, pulls off a little to make a ball with a hollow (中空的) centre, pinches (捏紧) the edges together and stretches it into a tube. He then blows air into the tube and makes it into different shapes—a rabbit, a monkey, and so on.
People, especially little kids, are interested in his skills. Among them, Simon, a foreign student, was attracted by the art and couldn’t help having a try. Though it looked easy, he felt that it was difficult to make sugar figurines. With Xiong’s help, Simon finally saw a horse slowly taking shape.
Simon was deeply moved after learning about the art. “I just can’t believe the traditional folk art can be kept so well here. I love it. Chinese culture should be spread around the world,” he said.
This art has been passed down for four generations in Xiong’s family. His little son often blows sugar balloons, just like what he used to do as a child.
“We will pass down the intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产),” said Xiong.

A. They asked another group for help.
B. Mr. Li told them the exact steps.
C. They observed pictures and learned about strong structures.

A. Take all wild animals to zoos. B. Build more nature reserves and stop hunting.

A. To tell an interesting story about a pet cat.

There was no gold anywhere about them.”
根据第四段“When they reached the top of the knoll (小圆丘), the girl turned and pointed. There...stood a house with windows of clear gold and diamonds...But the boy saw that it was his own home!”和最后一段“I have learned that our house has windows of gold and diamonds.”

Next, listen for the main ideas. If you want to catch every little piece of information, you’ll feel tired and bored.
____48____. Not only does this show love to the teacher, it also helps prevent your mind from wandering.
____49____, or it might just be someone talking to their neighbours who shouldn’t be. It can even be some birds outside the classroom window, or a group of kids who are talking loudly as they pass the door to your room.
Finally, you need to take notes because you will not remember everything the teacher said. You’ll have to take down the notes so that you can study them after class.____50____.
