A few years ago, I stood in a small classroom just outside of New York City, watching a high schooler named Serena Stevenson answer math questions. A teacher read out numbers — 74,470, 70,809, 98,402 — and Stevenson added them in her head. For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.
The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus (算盘). Stevenson used a practice called “mental abacus”, imagining the abacus in her mind and then using her fingers to work out the problems.
From watching Stevenson, I knew that gaining skill at the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads (珠子), so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills. I was one of the many who had some math doubts and I felt scared. My usual solution was escape, and if I had to calculate something like a percentage change, I would go online.
Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less scary. I didn’t become Euclid, the founder of geometry (几何学). But the practice brought my fears down. This is a time-tested power of the abacus. Confidence grows easily in the device (设备), and abacus students are less likely to be nervous about an upcoming math test. Part of the reason, it seems, is that practice and results appear to move in step.
My kids gained much as well. My youngest daughter could work out those difficult math problems, while my older child brought her abacus to school to show it to her classmates and teacher. These were just small successes for them, but that was how they finally believed in themselves.
4. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To prove the difficulty of math. B. To introduce the topic of the abacus.
C. To show the cleverness of Stevenson. D. To compare the author with Stevenson.
5. What do we know about the author from paragraph 3?
A. He was weak in math. B. He was good at computers.
C. He thought of math as useful. D. He had a close relationship with kids.
6. What does the author realize from his learning experience?
A. All roads lead to Rome. B. It’s never too late to learn.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. Faith can move mountains.
7. What did the author’s kids both gain from abacus learning?
A. Interest in abacus. B. Working skills.
C. Secrets to success. D. Self-confidence.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. D

Does studying philosophy (哲学) really make people better thinkers? To test this claim, as researchers, we looked at data from more than 600,000 US college graduates, compared philosophy students with those in every other field, and published our findings in the Journal of the American Philosophical Association.
The results were clear. By the end of their senior year, philosophy students did much better than all other students on tests of language and logical reasoning (逻辑推理). They also reported stronger virtues, including curiosity and open-mindedness.
Why does philosophy have such an effect? Different from many fields that focus on specific knowledge, philosophy is best understood as a method of research. It asks questions about human life and the universe and then tests possible answers. Doing philosophy means building logical reasoning, recognizing hidden assumptions (假设), and arriving at their often surprising conclusions. These habits of mind enable students to think more clearly and carefully from different aspects.
This benefit matters far beyond the classroom. At a time when public trust in higher education is at historic lows and AI is reshaping the workplace, the need for critical thinking has never been greater. AI can generate (生成) information quickly, but it cannot decide what is true or meaningful. If we humans don’t examine AI-generated information, our life is at risk.
Our research does not claim that philosophy alone guarantees wisdom or moral virtue. Intellectual (智力上的) skills can be used for selfish purposes as well as for justice. But the evidence showed that studying philosophy helps us develop habits of thought that are measurable and lasting. It gives students the tools to question assumptions, face uncertainty, and make thoughtful choices in an ever-changing world.
In short, philosophy is not beyond us — it is a necessity. It trains the mind, strengthens judgment, and prepares people to meet future challenges with courage.
8. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. By comparing data of graduates. B. By reviewing earlier studies.
C. By interviewing philosophy students. D. By analyzing graduates’ behavior.
9. What makes philosophy students better thinkers, according to Paragraph 3?
A. Their critical thinking skills. B. Their curiosity for mysteries.
C. Their anxiety for knowledge. D. Their language and logical training.
10. Why does philosophy matter in today’s world?
A. It is changing the workplace worldwide.
B. It helps rebuild public trust in higher education.
C. It provides us with wisdom and a sense of justice.
D. It helps us get better prepared for the challenging reality.
11. What can we infer from the text?
A. Philosophy matters more than AI in modern society.
B. Philosophy students are the smartest among graduates.
C. We need to study some philosophy to face the uncertain future.
D. Philosophy students adapt well to the ever-changing workplace.
【答案】8. A 9. A 10. D 11. C
【解析】
【导语】文章通过研究数据表明,学习哲学能提高人的语言和逻辑推理能力,培养批判性思维等思维习惯,这种能力在当今AI时代尤为重要。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“we looked at data from more than 600,000 US college graduates, compared philosophy students with those in every other field (我们查看了超过60万名美国大学毕业生的数据,将哲学专业学生与其他所有领域的学生进行了比较)”可知,研究人员通过比较毕业生的数据来开展研究。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Doing philosophy means building logical reasoning, recognizing hidden assumptions, and arriving at their often surprising conclusions. These habits of mind enable students to think more clearly and carefully from different aspects. (做哲学意味着建立逻辑推理,识别隐藏的假设,并得出往往令人惊讶的结论。这些思维习惯使学生能够从不同方面更清晰、更仔细地思考。)”可知,哲学学生成为更好思考者的原因是他们的批判性思维技能。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“At a time when public trust in higher education is at historic lows and AI is reshaping the workplace, the need for critical thinking has never been greater. AI can generate information quickly, but it cannot decide what is true or meaningful. If we humans don‘t examine AI-generated information, our life is at risk. (在公众对高等教育的信任处于历史低点、人工智能正在重塑工作场所的时候,对批判性思维的需求从未如此迫切。人工智能可以快速生成信息,但它无法决定什么是真实或有意义的。如果我们人类不检查人工智能生成的信息,我们的生活就处于危险之中。)”以及第六段中“It trains the mind, strengthens judgment, and prepares people to meet future challenges with courage. (它训练思维,增强判断力,并让人们准备好以勇气迎接未来的挑战。)”可知,哲学在当今世界很重要,因为它帮助我们更好地为充满挑战的现实做准备。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“In short, philosophy is not beyond us — it is a necessity. It trains the mind, strengthens judgment, and prepares people to meet future challenges with courage.( 简而言之,哲学并非遥不可及——它是必需品。它训练思维,增强判断力,并让人们准备好以勇气迎接未来的挑战。)”可知,哲学能培养思维、增强判断力,让人为未来的挑战做好准备,因此我们可以推断出需要学习一些哲学来面对不确定的未来。

Throughout history, trees have played an important role in keeping the balance of nature. They take in CO₂ and turn it into oxygen. But one problem with this traditional way is that the CO₂ stored in trees can be let out back into the air when the trees die.
However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to turn CO₂ into calcium oxalate (草酸钙). Then bacteria in the trees and the soil around them turn it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a main part of limestone (石灰岩)and chalk. The special process makes sure that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends. This finding was emphasized by Mike Rowley from the University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges remain. The main concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can transform throughout their lifetime. Without this reliable data, it is hard to judge the full effect of this method globally. Understanding the ecological balance and protecting biodiversity (生物多样性) are important before worldwide planting of these trees. Cooperative research efforts are needed to explore these aspects and develop a good strategy for using these trees as a natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the power of natural processes in dealing with environmental problems. While technological answers to climate change are significant, combining natural methods offers another way. The special ability of these trees gives us a hopeful method for exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is hard. As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we make the best of the power of nature to create a long-lasting future for generations to come?
12. What is special about the trees found in Kenya?
A. They help turn CO2 into solid state. B. They can take in more CO2.
C. They can let out oxygen quickly. D. They live peacefully with bacteria.
13. Why is the reliable data on CO2 transformation of the trees important?
A. To grow more trees in Kenya quickly.
B. To carry out more cooperative researches.
C. To measure the global effect of the CO2 transformation.
D. To keep the ecological balance and increase biodiversity.
14. What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs?
A. The method of green development. B. The future of scientific methods.
C. The danger of global climate change. D. The role of nature in climate solutions.
15. What does the passage tell us?
A. Fighting climate change is hard. B. Trees in Kenya store carbon naturally.
C. Scientists get new progress in CO₂ studies. D. Tree planting is a key to ecological balance.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. B

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The Happy Person’s Retreat (退让) Principle
Many people regard giving in to conflicts as weakness. Yet psychologists put forward a meaningful concept: the Happy Person’s Retreat Principle. ____16____ It is a wise and smart choice rather than timidity(怯懦).
The main idea behind this principle is simple. People who live a stable and happy life have many good things to protect: a warm family, a healthy body, a steady job, and inner peace. ____17____ But people who are stuck in a bad life have little to lose, so they usually fight hard over small things and put everything at risk to win.
____18____ Imagine you meet a rude fight on the street one day. If you choose to fight back angrily, you may get into a heated argument or even get hurt. The short feeling of winning will cost you your good mood, your time and even your safety. However, if you step back calmly, you can avoid unnecessary trouble right away.
This rule does not mean we should accept every unfair thing. ____19____ When your basic rights, your personal safety, or your moral line is seriously harmed, you have every reason to stand up for yourself. Stepping back only works when the fight has no value for your life.
Learning to use this rule brings long-lasting good to you. It keeps you from endless emotional costs and helps you keep your inner peace. ____20____ True happiness lies in guarding your happy life, not in winning every small fight.
A. Here is a common daily example that shows this rule clearly.
B. It finally allows you to focus energy on what truly matters to you.
C. Many people get the wrong idea about what true happiness means.
D. Taking part in fights will make them lose more important happiness.
E. It explains why happy people prefer to step back from meaningless fights.
F. Just giving in without thinking will only make others act badly toward you.
G. We should never give up what we believe in just to avoid short-term conflicts.
【答案】16. E 17. D 18. A 19. G 20. B

【答案】
Dear Ms. Lee,
I’m writing to voice my preference for Plan A — Walk This Way.
Rather than listening to descriptions passively, freshmen can explore our campus on foot. While wandering, they can feast their eyes on various facilities and soak in the unique campus atmosphere. Casual talks during the tour can ease their anxiety and build a close connection between seniors and newcomers.
I’m eager to serve as a guide. I will introduce the campus layout and share my experience of adapting to high school life. Hopefully, this activity can not only offer them a warm start but also leave fond memories of our school in their hearts.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For two years, I had waited for my father to come home after a car accident. Dad worked as a mail carrier, rising before dawn and returning at dusk enthusiastically. On weekends, he coached a Little League team, patiently teaching kids how to hold a bat and position their feet. He would often show them how to swing hard to hit the ball, then dash around the bases to score. He used to say, “Baseball never gives up on you, and you shouldn’t give up on it either.”
The accident happened on a rainy evening. He survived, but his right arm was crushed beyond repair. When he got home from hospital, he often sat on his bed, staring out the window and barely speaking. If I mentioned baseball, he would wave me off.
One evening, I lay reading the sports page. Sunday was my birthday, and the Yankees were playing against the St. Louis Browns. In past years, Dad would have taken me. It hurt to read about baseball, until I spotted an article on a new outfielder named Pete Gray, who was dominating the game. Then I knew I had to get my father to that game.
At dinner, Mom asked about my birthday. I said, “I want Dad to take me to the ballpark.” Dad just shook his head. I reminded him how he used to teach me to watch the fielders. He cut me off: “Go with a friend, or go alone.”
After dinner, I handed Mom the article about Gray who was excelling in the major games. Her face lighting up, she promised to urge Dad until he gave in.
Sunday morning, Dad, clean-shaven and wearing a jacket with his empty sleeve stuffed into the pocket, walked with me to the bus. He was silent, his face blank. At the stadium, I had chosen seats where we could see Gray up close.
When Pete Gray stepped out, Dad leaned forward. Gray was tall and strong, but his right sleeve hung empty. “Can he play?” Dad asked, inching forward on his seat.

1.写作词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】参考范文
With Dad’s eyes fixed on Gray’s empty sleeve, I saw a flicker of hope in his eyes. He straightened up and kept his gaze on Gray throughout the game. When Gray succeeded in a difficult play, Dad let out a quiet sigh, almost of relief. I gripped his good hand and whispered, “Dad, look! He’s doing everything you taught me. He never gave up, and neither should you. You still have your left hand, your sharp eyes, and all your baseball wisdom.” Dad’s jaw trembled, and for a long moment he stared at Gray, then, slowly but surely, his hand squeezing mine back.
When the game finally ended, I knew something inside Dad had shifted. He rose from his seat, his face softer. He started talking about Gray’s techniques, his voice hesitant but alive. I seized the chance: “Let’s practice tomorrow; you can still show me everything.” He looked at his empty sleeve, then at me, nodding firmly. I tossed him a soft ball; he caught it cleanly with his left hand. For the first time in two years, he smiled and I realized my hope had become his, and baseball had given us back not just a game, but each other.

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
1.写作词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With Dad’s eyes fixed on Gray’s empty sleeve, I saw a flicker of hope in his eyes.
