What can trees tell us about climate (气候) change? Quite a lot!
Trees can keep a record of Earth’s climate for a very long time. In fact, trees can live for hundreds and sometimes even thousands of years!
If you see a stump (树桩), you may find that the top of the stump has many rings. These rings can tell us how old the tree is, and what the weather was like during each year of the tree’s life.
First year growth.
The light-colored rings are wood that grew in the spring and early summer, while the dark rings are wood that grew in the late summer and fall. One light ring and one dark ring make one year of the tree’s life.
Dry season.
Rainy season.
Tree rings usually grow wider in warm, wet years and are thinner in years when it is cold and dry. If the tree has experienced hard times, such as a drought (干旱), the tree might hardly grow at all in those years.
Scar (疤痕) from forest fire.
In most places, daily weather records have only been kept for the past 100 years to 150 years. So, scientists can use trees to learn about the climate hundreds to thousands of years ago.

Do you know many people sit for more than nine hours a day? Maybe you’re one of them! Whether you work at a desk, sit in a car, on a bus or on a train, or relax on the sofa watching TV, you spend more time sitting than your parents and grandparents did. But what does this mean for your body?
Well, the answer may make you anxious. A study carried out in the 1950s compared bus drivers with the conductors who walked around the bus selling tickets. It showed that drivers who spent many hours sitting at the wheel were twice as likely to have heart problems as the conductors.
Sitting for a long time has been connected to different health problems, even if you often exercise. When you sit all day, you burn fewer calories than someone with a more active job. Some people say it slows down your body’s ability to control blood sugar levels, which can increase the chance of getting diabetes (糖尿病).
One possible solution to this problem is for desk workers to use standing desks to spend at least part of their day on their feet. A small study showed that office workers who stood for three hours after lunch had smaller increases in their blood sugar levels. Another study suggested that standing for three or four hours a day—for a whole year—would burn as many calories as running ten marathons.
However, some experts question these numbers and say that standing all day can also cause problems like leg or back pain. They suggest gradually increasing the time spent standing if you want to use a standing desk. They also point out that there are many other choices besides standing. For example, walking burns far more calories than just standing around.
39. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By sharing advice. B. By listing numbers. C. By asking questions. D. By explaining reasons.
40. What does the underlined word “anxious” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. worried B. proud C. bored D. relaxed
41. What does the writer mainly want to tell us in Paragraph 3?
A. Driving a bus can be dangerous. B. It’s important to get an active job.
C. It’s time for us to control blood sugar levels. D. Sitting for long hours leads to health problems.
42. Which of the following may the experts in the last paragraph agree with?
A. Everybody should use a standing desk. B. Standing too long might cause back pain.
C. Walking is the best choice for desk workers. D. People should spend most of their time standing.
43. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The importance of standing and walking in the workplace.
B. The connection between sitting all day and health problems.
C. The dangers of sitting all day and solutions for desk workers.
D. The benefits of standing desks for office workers’ health.
【答案】39. C 40. A 41. D 42. B 43. C

【40题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“A study carried out in the 1950s compared bus drivers with the conductors who walked around the bus selling tickets. It showed that drivers who spent many hours sitting at the wheel were twice as likely to have heart problems as the conductors.”可知久坐的司机患心脏问题的可能性是售票员的两倍,这个结果会让人感到担忧,“anxious”意思是“担忧的”,即“worried”。故选A。
【41题详解】
主旨大意题。根据“Sitting for a long time has been connected to different health problems, even if you often exercise.”以及后文内容可知,本段主要想告诉我们久坐会导致健康问题。故选D。
【42题详解】
细节理解题。根据“However, some experts question these numbers and say that standing all day can also cause problems like leg or back pain.”
