B
Visiting my parents for the weekend, a traditional practice plays out. Sitting on the sofa after Sunday lunch, I reach towards the photo albums (相册) in the bookcase.
Opening one, selected at random, I feel as if I’m being wrapped in a comfortable blanket, carried back more than 40 years into my childhood. Here, in a white dress, is me aged four, face alive with joy as I was reaching my Christmas gifts.
There’s my brother in a blue shirt, playing with his toy planes. My 10-year-old daughter Clemmie sits beside me, pointing at pictures, asking questions about the cute babies (my cousins) and that youthful man carving the turkey (my dad).
She’s excited to see her family history rolled out. But after leafing through the final page, she turns to me, “Where are the pictures of my Christmases?” To which my shameful answer is, “I’m not sure.” Because, unlike my parents, I have no mass of albums recording Clemmie’s early life.
Clemmie and her 12-year-old sister Sasha are set to become part of what the Professional Photographers of America calls the “lost generation”— an era of people, currently fairly young, who risk losing these magical images of their childhood and with it, a strong sense of their history.
On the one hand, our children are the most photographed in history, with more than 400 million shots (快照) uploaded on social media platforms every day. Yet many are rarely looked at again. And an estimated 631 million photographs each year will remain forever on accounts to which we’ve forgotten the passwords, making them inaccessible to us and future generations.
This is a shame, not only for personal interest, but for something deeper. “Looking at family photos helps children create a sense of identity and gives them the gift of the past,” explains Dana Denis Smith, whose recent TED talk is about the importance of preserving our memories.

Is it true that our brain alone is responsible for human cognition(认知)? What about our body? Is it possible for thought and behavior to originate from somewhere other than our brain? Psychologists who study Embodied Cognition(EC) ask similar questions. The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure.
If you think about it for a moment, it makes total sense. When you smell something good or hear amusing sounds, certain emotions are awakened. Think about how newborns use their senses to understand the world around them. They don’t have emotions so much as needs—they don’t feel sad, they’re just hungry and need food. Even unborn babies can feel their mothers’ heartbeats and this has a calming effect. In the real world, they cry when they’re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to as-sociate being warm with being loved.
Understandably, theorists have been arguing for years and still disagree on whether the brain is the nerve centre that operates the rest of the body. Older Western philosophers and mainstream language researchers believe this is fact, while EC theorises that the brain and body are working together as an organic supercomputer, processing everything and forming your reactions.
Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction. In one experiment, test subjects(实验对象) were asked to judge people after being handed a hot or a cold drink. They all made warm evaluations when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than coolness. And it works the other way too; in another study, subjects’ fingertip temperatures were measured after being“included” in or “rejected” from a group task. Those who were included felt physically warmer.
For further proof, we can look at the metaphors(比喻说法) that we use without even thinking. A kind and sympathetic person is frequently referred to as one with a soft heart and someone who is very strong and calm in difficult situations is often described as solid as a rock. And this kind of metaphorical use is common across languages.
Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it? If you’re having a bad day,a warm cup of tea will give you a flash of pleasure. If you know you’re physically cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions.
46. According to the author, the significance of the EC theory lies in ________.
A. facilitating our understanding of the origin of psychology
B. revealing the major role of the mind in human cognition
C. offering a clearer picture of the shape of human brain
D. bringing us closer to the truth in human cognition
47. Where does the new borns’ understanding of their surroundings start from?
A. Their personal looks.
B. Their mental needs.
C. Their inner emotions.
D. Their physical feelings.
48. The experiments mentioned in Paragraph 4 further prove________.
A. environment impacts how we judge others
B. how body temperature is related to health
C. the mind and the body influence each other
D. how humans interact with their surroundings
49. What does the author intend to prove by citing the metaphors in Paragraph 5?
A. Human speech is alive with metaphors.
B. Human senses have effects on thinking.
C. Human language is shaped by visual images.
D. Human emotions are often compared to natural materials.
50. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To share with the reader ways to release their emotions.
B. To guide the reader onto the path to career success.
C. To encourage the reader to put EC into practice.
D. To deepen the reader’s understanding of EC.
D 47. D 48. C 49. B 50. C

根据文章第一段“The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure.(EC 理论表明,我们的身体也负责思考或解决问题。更准确地说,思维塑造身体,身体同等程度地塑造思维。)”可知,EC理论认为我们身体就像大脑一样塑造我们的认知,因此推断EC理论的意义在于让我们更接近人类认知的真理。故选D项。
【47题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“They don’t have emotions so much as needs—they don’t feel sad, they’re just hungry and need food. Even unborn babies can feel their mothers’ heartbeats and this has a calming effect. In the real world, they cry when they’re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to as-sociate being warm with being loved.(他们没有如同需要那么多的情感——他们不会感到悲伤,他们只是饿,需要食物。即使是未出生的婴儿也能感觉到母亲的心跳,这具有镇静作用。在现实世界中,他们冷了就哭,然后被拥抱。这样,他们开始将温暖与被爱联系起来。)”可知,新生儿对周围环境的理解依靠的是身体感觉。故选D项。
【48题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段首句“Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction.(进一步的研究支持了思想与身体的相互作用。)”接下来列举了两个实验“In one experiment, test subjects(实验对象) were asked to judge people after being handed a hot or a cold drink. They all made warm evaluations when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than coolness. (在一项实验中,测试对象被要求在递给热饮或冷饮后判断人。当他们的指尖感知到温暖而不是凉爽时,他们都做出了温暖的评价。)”表明,身体会影响到思想,以及“And it works the other way too;in another study, subjects’ fingertip temperatures were measured after being “included” in or “rejected” from a group task. Those who were included felt physically warmer.(相反,也是如此;在另一项研究中,受试者的指尖温度是在被“纳入”或“拒绝”小组任务后测量的。那些被纳入在内的人感到身体温暖。)”表明身体会受到思想的影响,因此推断实验进一步证明了身体与思想间的相互作用。故选C项。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段中的主题句“For further proof, we can look at the metaphors(比喻说法) that we use without even thinking.(为了进一步证明,我们可以看看我们不假思索就使用的比喻说法)。)”以及下文的陈述“A kind and sympathetic person is frequently referred to as one with a soft heart and someone who is very strong and calm in difficult situations is often described as solid as a rock.(一个善良和富有同情心的人经常被称为心软的人,而在困难的情况下非常坚强和冷静的人通常被描述为坚如磐石。)”
根据最后一段“Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it?(既然您已经掌握了身心互动的知识,为什么不使用它呢?)”以及下文中列举的两种现实生活中的情况“If you’re having a bad day, a warm cup of tea will give you a flash of pleasure. If you know you’re physically cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions.(如果你今天过得很糟糕,一杯温暖的茶会给你带来一瞬间的快乐。如果你知道自己身体很冷,在做出任何人际关系决定之前先热身。)”可知,理论知识已经知道,且在现实生活中有一定的运用价值,所以作者最后一段是在鼓励读者把EC理论运用于现实生活中。故选C项。
D
Failure is probably the most exhausting experience a person ever has. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding.
We experience this tiredness in two ways: as start-up fatigue(疲惫) and performance fatigue. In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it has either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel.
Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first.
Years ago, I was asked to write 102 essays on the great ideas of some famous authors. Applying my own rule, I determined to write them in alphabetical(按字母顺序), never letting myself leave out a tough idea. And I always started the day’s work with the difficult task of essay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works.
Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle. Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that, however hard we work, we fail again and again. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can-then let the unconscious take over.
When planning Encyclopaedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its articles. Nothing like this had ever been done before, and day after day I kept coming up with solutions, but none of them worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable.
One day, mentally exhausted, I wrote down all the reasons why this problem could not be solved. I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. Relived, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep.
An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution clearly in mind. In the weeks that followed, the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind proved correct at every step. Though I worked as hard as before, I felt no fatigue. Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing.
Human beings, I believe must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired.
51. People with start-up fatigue are most likely to ________.
A. delay tasks B. work hard
C. seek help D. accept failure
52. What does the author recommend doing to prevent start-up fatigue?
A. Writing essays in strict order.
B. Building up physical strength.
C. Leaving out the toughest ideas.
D. Dealing with the hardest task first.
53. On what occasion does a person probably suffer from performance fatigue?
A. Before starting a difficult task.
B. When all the solutions fail.
C. If the job is rather boring.
D. After finding a way out.
54. According to the author, the unconscious mind may help us ________.
A. ignore mental problems B. get some nice sleep
C. gain complete relief D. find the right solution
55. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Success Is Built upon Failure
B. How to Handle Performance Fatigue
C. Getting over Fatigue: A Way to Success
D. Fatigue: An Early Sign of Health Problems
A 52. D 53. B 54. D 55. C

Melissa Gillespie, the mom of three, earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Southern New Hampshire University on Mother’s Day, 17 years after she started working on it.
Gillespie, 37, began to earn a bachelor’s degree when she was the mom of one baby and her husband, Quinton — serving in the Navy — was stationed (驻扎) in Washington. Three moves, two more children, one long separation and much deployment (部署) later, she never packed in pursuing her goal. Taking classes part-time while mothering a child who had only learnt to walk and later a baby was difficult, but she was committed to the effort. Then her husband moved to New York, and Gillespie and their two small children went with him. In New York, Gillespie had their third baby, and for four years, she wasn’t able to work on her degree at all. She focused on parenting her three children, two of whom were diagnosed with autism (自闭症).
Then the family moved back to Washington, where Gillespie started over. She had to re-take every class because the credits (学分) from the classes she had already completed had expired (过期), but she stuck with it.
When her husband received orders to move to Virginia, the couple had to make a hard decision. If she left again, Gillespie would not be able to complete her degree in nursing that she had worked so hard for already. So she chose to stay in Washington. For 19 months, Gillespie studied nursing and raised their three children.
When Gillespie passed the exam and earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing, her mom and children were able to attend the ceremony, but not Quinton. “It was so hard, and so hard on the kids. But I think that period of time showed them that it’s not easy to reach your goals, but if you push forward to do what you have to do, you can,” said Gillespie.
56. What does the underlined phrase “packed in” in Paragraph 2 mean? (no more than 2 words)

根据第五段“When Gillespie passed the exam and earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing, her mom and children were able to attend the ceremony, but not Quinton. (当Gillespie通过考试取得护理学士学位时,她的母亲和孩子们参加了仪式,Quinton却没能到场。)”可知,Gillespie的母亲和孩子们参加了她取得护理学士学位的仪式。

My old Canon camera still works fine. So this Christmas, I’m making a change. Because when my daughters are adults, I want them to be able to sit with their children and point (and laugh) at my terrible hairstyles and fashions.
41. Which describes the author’s feeling when viewing old photo albums?
A. Sadness about lost records. B. Fondness for past memories.
C. Regret about old technology. D. Joy at uncovering secrets.
42. Why are modern children called the “lost generation”?
A. They may care little about family history. B. They spend much time on social media.
C. They prefer digitally perfected pictures. D. They may lose their childhood memories.
43. What is one reason many photos today are rarely seen again?
A. They are printed in low quality.
B. People store them on devices but rarely organize them.
C. They’re stuck in social media accounts we can’t access.
D. They are all deleted after uploading.
44. What does Dana emphasize about the role of family photos?
A. Waking up multiple emotions. B. Recording past fashions and styles.
C. Strengthening children’s self-identity. D. Contributing to parent-child relationships.
45. What does the author plan to do this Christmas?
A. Improve her hairstyle. B. Create physical albums.
C. Organize a family gathering. D. Invest in photography equipment.

A. environment impacts how we judge others
B. how body temperature is related to health
C. the mind and the body influence each other
D. how humans interact with their surroundings
