We adopted Etti from a dog-rescue website. She’s not the dog we expected, but she’s the one we got. It hasn’t been easy, because although Etti is sweet and loving with us, she isn’t with anything else.
Thankfully, we’ve found an excellent trainer. She said, “You don’t get the dog you want; you get the dog you need.” I remember thinking, “Need? Do I need an anxious Dalmatian who doesn’t like other people — especially those who enter our home — or other dogs, especially during walks?” The last thing I needed was more stress!
But I’ve come to appreciate the wisdom of this expression. I, too, get anxious and struggle to manage. Ironically, I have a dog who’s similar and has helped me. At first, when walking Etti, I was tense and held her leash (拴狗绳) tightly, always looking out for “dangers” like the Corgi across the street. Gradually, I’ve learned to relax. I might be imagining it, but Etti seems calmer too.
Many believe dogs mirror our emotions. Just the other day, Etti was anxious after seeing many dogs, squirrels and scooters. When she barked at a pedestrian (行人), I realized I’d been tense and worried that day. Perhaps Etti was showing my mood, reminding me to be mindful of how my emotions affect those around me.
Etti easily changes from one mood to another. I doubt she thinks much about the past or worries about the future. She’s a rescue, so who knows what she faced before, but she doesn’t let it hold her back, unlike many humans.
Etti has taught me that every walk is a new walk, just like every day is a new day. We’re often told to seize the moment and treat each day as our last, but we rarely hear to treat each day as our first. I’ve started doing that too. The possibilities are endless, and it’s OK if yesterday didn’t go well because the present moment can be a new beginning.
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’m not a typical dog person, and I’m not sure I’ll ever be. Yet, being a dog owner may be exactly what some of us need to be the best humans we can be.
41. What do we know about Etti?
A. She needed constant attention. B. She required a special trainer.
C. She acted nervously toward others. D. She refused to follow directions.
42. Why did the trainer say, “You get the dog you need”?
A. She made life busier and fuller. B. She filled the author’s loneliness.
C. She forced the author to be patient. D. She helped the author face her anxiety.
43. What does the underlined word “Ironically” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Luckily B. Generally C. Hardly D. Sarcastically (讽刺地)
44. What lesson has the author learned from Etti?
A. Life is short, so act quickly. B. Each day offers a fresh start.
C. Live with no fear of endings. D. Avoid repeating old mistakes.
45. What idea does the author express in the last paragraph?
A. Dog ownership requires sacrifice. B. Unexpected roles can bring self-growth.
C. Love for animals can change personality. D. Humans should learn to depend on pets.

Officially: Iceland is no longer mosquito-free. On Oct 21, Iceland’s Natural Science Institute announced that three mosquitoes had been discovered near Reykjavik, the capital city. This marks “the first record of mosquitoes in the wild in Iceland,” Matthias Alfredson, a scientist at the institute, told CNN.
Mosquitoes are common insects with over 3,700 species worldwide, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Iceland, thanks to its cold, harsh climate, was once one of only two places on Earth without mosquitoes — the other being Antarctica.
However, climate change is changing that. This spring, Iceland saw record temperatures, 26. 6°C on May 15, with some areas reaching 10°C above average, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
Iceland isn’t alone: Hawaii lost its mosquito-free status in 1826, when mosquitoes “hitchhiked (搭便车)” there on European and American ships. They thrived in Hawaii’s warm climate, and in recent years, global warming has helped expand their range into the islands’ higher-elevation (更高海拔) forests that were once too cold for them.
Even in regions where mosquitoes are common, more species are appearing as the planet warms, The Guardian reported. For example in the UK, two non-native species, one of which is the Egyptian mosquito, were discovered this year. They can spread diseases like dengue fever (登革热), which affects 100 to 400 million people annually, according to the World Health Organization.
Mosquitoes depend heavily on temperature for survival: they are cold-blooded, poikilothermal (变温的), meaning their body temperature matches their environment, explained The Conversation. Mosquito larvae (幼虫) need temperatures between 7℃ and 16℃ to grow, and adults prefer temperatures over 27℃, hibernating when temperatures drop below 10℃. Besides temperature, climate change also aids mosquito spread by disrupting precipitation patterns (降水模式) — given that mosquitoes develop in stagnant, dirty water before maturing into adults, the Stanford Report noted. And floods create breeding pools for them, while droughts lead people to store water, increasing mosquito habitats, according to the World Mosquito Program, a non-profit organization run by Monash University in Australia.
While mosquitoes are thriving due to climate change, other animals are being forced to move farther north as a result of the same trend, World Atlas notes. This is particularly true for Arctic species like polar bears and snowy owl (雪鸮).
46. What is the focus of Paragraph 1?
A. The reason for Iceland’s mosquito-free history. B. The first discovery of mosquitoes in Iceland.
C. The climate feature of Iceland’s capital. D. A scientist working in Iceland’s institute.
47. What does the underlined word “thrived” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Grew rapidly. B. Survived hardly C. Disappeared suddenly. D. Changed completely.
48. What do we know about mosquitoes’ temperature preferences from Paragraph 6?
A. Adults hibernate when temperatures are above 27℃.
B. Young mosquitoes need temperatures below 7℃ to grow.
C. Adults thrive in temperatures higher than 27℃.
D. Their body temperature remains constant in cold environments.
49. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. More animals will enter Iceland in the future.
B. Arctic species suffer most from climate change.
C. Mosquitoes will continue to expand their range.
D. Climate change affects animal movements differently.
50. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Climate change increases mosquitoes’ impact on health.
B. Climate change provides conditions for mosquito survival.
C. Climate change spreads mosquitoes and affects other species.
D. Climate change makes Iceland and Hawaii lose mosquito-free status.
D
Whether it’s music, literature or cinema, we all seek emotional comfort in some form of art from time to time. However, the power of art acts not only on our minds, but also on our bodies.
For the first time, a UK study has found that art positively affects the immune (免疫的), endocrine (内分泌的) and nervous systems all at once, reported The Guardian. The experiment involved 50 healthy adults aged 18 to 40. Half looked at original artworks at the Courtauld Gallery in London, while the other half looked at copies of the same paintings in a non-gallery setting.
The health sensors they wore recorded a 22 percent reduction of stress hormones in the gallery-goers and 8 percent for the other group, reported Art Fund, the UK’s national charity for art. Inflammatory markers (炎症标志物), which are signs of health issues like heart disease and anxiety, also dropped by about 30 percent for the gallery group. Meanwhile, signs of excitement, like a higher heart rate, were observed, indicating that art can both calm and energize our bodies. Moreover, these benefits seemed consistent regardless of the volunteers’ art knowledge.
It’s not just visual arts that have such effects. For example, a 2021 Swiss study said that dance, with its non-verbal nature, reduces stress by releasing tension and improving self-perception and movement control.
What makes art so powerful? Scientists have different theories. One, developed by Edward Vessel at the City College of New York, looks to our brain’s default (默认的) mode network, which is widely believed to play a key role in creativity. This network usually quiets down when we engage with the outside world. However, when we enjoy art, it becomes active along with other focus-related parts of the brain. This could be why art experiences can feel very intense.
Even though we are still learning how this works, the power of art has been applied in therapy since the mid-20th century. It was first developed to help traumatized (心理受创的) World War I soldiers express themselves, as the traumas often affected their brain’s speech centers, limiting traditional talk therapy, according to American Scientist. Since then, art therapy has benefited over 650 million people worldwide.
Studies like the recent one in the UK can help make art therapy more available. “We need more research that shows the outcomes in a very quantitative (定量的) way, in a scientific way, in a broad, systematic way,” said Marygrace Berberian, a professor at New York University. She explained that policymakers and insurance companies rely on this data to make decisions about coverage, according to a New York University press release in September.
51. How was the study conducted?
A. Through historical data analysis. B. Through random observations.
C. Through general population surveys. D. Through condition-based comparisons.
52. What was one result of the experiment?
A. Viewing copies raised inflammation levels. B. Gallery visits caused more calm than excitement.
C. Gallery visitors showed a larger stress drop. D. Art learners benefited more from art than others.
53. What does Vessel’s theory suggest about art?
A. It activates multiple brain parts. B. It reduces attention to the outside.
C It weakens the brain’s default activity. D. It boosts creative abilities and memory.
54. What can be inferred about art therapy?
A. It is not yet widely recognized. B. It mainly treats speech disorders.
C. Its expansion relies on more data. D. Its effectiveness remains unproven.
55. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Art’s power to heal B. The impact of artworks on people’s health
C. Why is art so useful? D. Art can calm our bodies

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a small village in the heart of a big forest. Surrounded by the majestic mountains, the villagers were accustomed to their daily routines, and none of them had any desire to learn or try something new — except for a girl named Hannah.
Hannah was an adventurous spirit with an imagination far beyond her time. She loved to explore and would spend hours in the woods searching for new discoveries. She loved to create stories in her head and often imagined herself as one of the characters in them.
One afternoon, while setting out on one of her adventurous quests, Hannah found a deserted cottage.
As she opened the door, she was shocked: Before her was a room filled with books! Books, shining in the dust and basking in the warm sunlight, were just waiting to be explored. Hannah picked two books and decided to read them at home.
On her way back, she encountered her friends and enthusiastically shared her find, but what greeted her was roars of laughter!
Despite feeling confused and slightly hurt, she didn’t abandon her books.
That evening, she immersed (沉浸) herself in the adventurous tales hidden within the covers. The following day, she hurriedly finished her breakfast and made her way back to the cottage.
Hannah read the books eagerly. They were incredibly captivating, filled with narratives about diverse creatures. Each page was just an adventure waiting to be undertaken. Hannah’s imagination transported her to a world of talking animals, mystical creatures and adventurous nights. 【61题答案】
【答案】A Message to My Alma Mater
Recently, nearly 300 Senior Three students voted on the video themes for “A Message to My Alma Mater”. The pie chart shows that “Conveying thanks and blessings to teachers and classmates” takes the largest share (68.2%), followed by “Recording a memorable class activity” (23.4%). “Campus scenery” (5.1%) and “Daily school life” (3.3%) account for smaller proportions. This reflects that students prioritize emotional connections with people in their high school years.
For my video, I’ll choose “Recording a memorable class activity” — our 2024 sports meeting relay race. Back then, our class was far behind at first, but everyone cheered loudly and our last runner sprinted to the finish line. I plan to interview classmates about their feelings that day and show old photos of us hugging and crying with joy. It’s a perfect symbol of our class spirit.
Could you tell me how to sign up for this activity? Is there a deadline for video submission? I’m eager to join in.
