B.Math. C.Medicine. 19.Why does the speaker mention“rocks in a bucket”? A.To explain an exam question.B.To point out what to focus on. C.To tell how to handle pressure. 20.What study method does the speaker like the best? A.Using mind maps. B.Teaching others. C.Drawing tables. 【答案】18.C 19.B 20.A 【原文】 A friend who studies architecture at a good college told me that her math grades are holding her back. She asked how I managed to pass so many tough exams and graduate even though I wasn't fond of medical school. Well, for that, I want to share with you 2 easy steps. Step one: know what the exam is really about. When you fill a bucket, always put in the big rocks first. The smaller rocks will then automatically fill the remaining spaces. Concentrate on the key areas the exam is testing and don't stress about obscure details. To do this, review past exam papers, organize them by topic, and study the main types of questions commonly tested in each. Step two: practice, practice, and practice. Possessing knowledge is one thing, but being able to apply it in an exam is another. The ability to recall knowledge is important. One effective study method is teaching somebody else. I also recommend drawing mind maps, which is my personal favorite. Additionally, using tables to compare elements helps you remember and hence recall knowledge better. A Want to do something meaningful? Those formed an enduring mark on my memory, making the lake an everlasting symbol of my pure and innocent childhood. Decades on, exhausted by the restlessness and noise of urban coastal life, I resolved to revisit this time-honored place with my son, hoping to reclaim those faint yet invaluable memories. On a refreshing early morning in August, the moment we set foot on the lakeside, the age-old scenery enveloped me in an intense atmosphere of timelessness. Woods encircled the lake, whose glassy surface remained tranquil, and the soft wind carried the identical mildness that had spread through my childhood summers. Every breath of fresh lake air seemed to bridge the gap between bygone days and the current moment. While wandering along the shore, I was overwhelmed by an illusion (幻觉). So peaceful and unaltered was the landscape that I could forget my identity, as if I straddled (横跨) two eras: the innocent boy of the past and the grown father of the present. The most fascinating sight unfolded on the water. A dragonfly landed gracefully on the tip of my fishing rod. The entire scene — delicate ripples lapping gently against the boat and the soft smell of wet soil filling the air — was exactly like the vintage pictures stored in my mind. I was not the only one absorbed in the moment. Much to my surprise, I found that my son, growing up in modern times, shared my feelings in the same simple summer joy I once treasured. Natural landscapes might stay true to their primitive form, yet time proceeds unstopped, creating a lasting spiritual connection that goes beyond different eras. 24.Why did the author revisit the lake with his son? A.He intended to get inspiration for his work. B.He desired to relive precious memories. C.He hoped to teach his son fishing skills. D.He planned to search for childhood photos. 25.What does the underlined word “tranquil” in paragraph 2 mean? A.Undisturbed. B.Rough. C.Frozen. D.Invisible. 26.How might the author feel when standing by the lake? A.Doubtful about how nature keeps its appeal. B.Envious of his son for enjoying summer. C.Regretful about leaving the lake when young. D.Confused by a mix of different identities. 27.Which best conveys the theme of the passage? A.People’s truth-seeking remains unchanged regardless of time. B.Urban life destroys people’s precious childhood memories. C.Nature serves as a spiritual bond linking the past and present. D.Modern society arouses children’s longing for nature. 根据第一段中“Decades on, exhausted by the restlessness and noise of urban coastal life, I resolved to revisit this time-honored place with my son, hoping to reclaim those faint yet invaluable memories. (几十年来,因厌倦了沿海城市生活的躁动与喧嚣,我决定带儿子重游这个历史悠久的地方,希望找回那些模糊却无比珍贵的记忆)”可知,作者带儿子重游湖畔是为了重温珍贵的童年记忆。 25.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Woods encircled the lake, whose glassy surface remained tranquil, and the soft wind carried the identical mildness that had spread through my childhood summers.(树木环抱着湖面,湖水如镜般tranquil,微风轻拂,带来与我童年夏日相同的温柔气息)”可知,湖面平静如镜,与“glassy (如玻璃般的)”和“soft wind (微风)”等描写相呼应,tranquil意为“宁静的、未受打扰的”。 26. 根据第三段中“So peaceful and unaltered was the landscape that I could forget my identity, as if I straddled (横跨) two eras: the innocent boy of the past and the grown father of the present. (景色如此宁静而未变,以至于我几乎忘记了自己的身份,仿佛横跨了两个时代:过去那个天真的男孩和现在已为人父的自己)”可知,作者站在湖边时被一种幻觉所笼罩,感到身份的混淆与交织。 27.主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“Natural landscapes might stay true to their primitive form, yet time proceeds unstopped, creating a lasting spiritual connection that goes beyond different eras. (自然景观或许保持着原始的形态,但时间不停流逝,创造出一种超越不同时代的持久精神联系)”可知,全文的主题是自然作为精神纽带,将过去与现在连接起来。 C Food markets have experienced considerable instability in recent years. Global warming is causing droughts, soil desertification and extreme weather. Yet the fundamentals of food production were last transformed in the mid-20th century. Fortunately, global investments in agricultural innovation are on the rise. Funds for agritech companies reached $16.2 billion in 2025. Of this, $9 billion went to new research into boosting farm yields, up from $2.5 billion in 2016. The focus of sustainability efforts is switching from preventing climate change to dealing with it and finding solutions. Scientists are developing alternatives to the pesticides and fertilisers that have dominated modern agriculture since the Green Revolution of the mid-20th century, based on a better understanding of plants themselves. B-COS, a team from Ghent University, is genetically engineering bacteria to produce a special kind of molecule (分子). Tomato and potato plants sprayed (喷洒) with the molecules are tricked into believing they are under attack and activate their natural defenses against infection. B-COS is applying this approach to two new products: one to improve growth and drought tolerance, and another which it claims can reduce disease incidence by 40-50%. Naturally, there are also companies exploring the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. The general idea of this combination is called “precision agriculture”, which is to help farmers connect everything from the environmental conditions of individual fields to the genetic sequences (序列) of the bacteria present in the soil, and those of the plants themselves. This is then run through AI models that make predictions about the best conditions and treatments to achieve the highest yields or produce the highest-quality crops. “It is going to show us what’s going on in each square metre of the fields, such as temperature, water and carbon absorption,” says Mr. Anders, a managing partner of an agritech company. There is still a long way to go. In 2024, agricultural tech companies attracted just 1.3% of global early-stage venture-capital funding despite agriculture accounting for about 4% of global GDP. But if high-tech innovations still make their way, and the funds keep flowing, a new age of precision agriculture is coming. 28.What is highlighted concerning agricultural investment in paragraph 1? A.Its instability. B.Its source. C.Its influence. D.Its shift. 29.Why did the B-COS team spray the molecules on tomato and potato plants? A.To evaluate disease tolerance. B.To eliminate harmful substances. C.To boost natural resistance. D.To protect healthy plants. 30.What does “precision agriculture” contribute to? A.Accurate market forecasting. B.Efficient harvesting techniques. C.Sufficient genetic information. D.Reasonable agricultural planning. 31.What is the author’s purpose in presenting the data in the last paragraph? A.To call for greater investment. B.To warn of potential risks. C.To cast light on the achievements. D.To give credit to the companies. 根据第一段“The focus of sustainability efforts is switching from preventing climate change to dealing with it and finding solutions.(可持续发展努力的重点正在从防止气候变化转向应对气候变化并寻找解决方案。)” 根据第二段“Tomato and potato plants sprayed with the molecules are tricked into believing they are under attack and activate their natural defenses against infection.(喷洒了这种分子的番茄和马铃薯植株会被欺骗,以为自己正受到攻击,从而激活其抵御感染的自然防御。)” 根据第三段“This is then run through AI models that make predictions about the best conditions and treatments to achieve the highest yields or produce the highest-quality crops.(然后,这些数据会通过人工智能模型运行,预测实现最高产量或生产最高质量作物的最佳条件和处理方法。)” 根据最后一段“In 2024, agricultural tech companies attracted just 1.3% of global early-stage venture-capital funding despite agriculture accounting for about 4% of global GDP. But if high-tech innovations still make their way, and the funds keep flowing, a new age of precision agriculture is coming.(2024年,农业科技公司仅吸引了全球早期风险投资的1.3%,尽管农业约占全球GDP的4%。但如果高科技创新继续推进,资金持续流入,精准农业的新时代即将到来。)”可知,作者呈现这些数据是为了说明农业科技投资仍然不足,呼吁更多投资。 D Yellow fever mosquitoes exposed to the insect repellent (驱虫剂) DEET can learn to associate the off-putting chemical with food, researchers report. The finding suggests that mosquitoes can link unpleasant smells with rewards — turning a negative experience into a positive one. Clément Vinauger, a neuroethologist at Virginia Tech, and his colleagues housed mosquitoes in a central container connected to two bottles: One contained clean air, and the other contained DEET. The team allowed the mosquitoes to feed on blood from an artificial feeder while exposed to only clean air for 10 seconds. The researchers then increased the proportion of DEET, aiming to train the mosquitoes to associate the repellent with a meal. To test the association, the researchers put trained and untrained mosquitoes in narrow tubes. A team member held an untreated hand a few centimeters from one end of the tube and a hand treated with a DEET-containing repellent at the other end. Trained mosquitoes attempted to bite the repellent-treated hand, while untrained mosquitoes stayed clear. Anandasankar Ray, a neuroscientist, who was not involved in the work, notes that although the findings suggest mosquitoes are smelling DEET and that the chemical is not masking our scent (气味), mosquitoes also smell with their legs. The mosquitoes couldn’t land on the repellent-treated hand in the experiments. “They’d be getting the smell of DEET being paired with a bitter touch contact,” Ray says. “It would be a punishment for them rather than a reward.” Vinauger suspects that mosquitoes could learn to associate DEET with a meal when its repellent effects have largely worn off, perhaps hours after people apply it to their skin. “There might still be some traces of DEET on the skin, but maybe not enough to create that repellency effect,” Vinauger says. “Mosquitoes might still land, drink some blood and not be repelled.” If they manage to get blood, the insects may learn to link the smell with the meal and begin hunting for a combination of human smell and DEET. The results certainly don’t suggest that people shouldn’t use DEET, Vinauger says. “It’s still the gold standard in terms of protection.” But the chemical is sold by different brands at varying concentrations, and each product may come with unique instructions. “Reading the label,” he says, “is important.” 32.How did the researchers train the mosquitoes to associate DEET with a meal? A.By placing a treated hand next to a feeder. B.By removing their ability to smell. C.By extending pre-feeding DEET exposure. D.By increasing DEET during blood feeding. 33.According to Ray, what is the punishment for the mosquitoes? A.Painful touch with DEET. B.Death from starvation. C.Reduced desire for blood. D.Decreased sense of smell. 34.What does Vinauger suggest people do? A.Apply the repellent more than it is recommended. B.Choose products with low DEET concentration. C.Follow the products’ instructions accordingly. D.Stop using DEET immediately. 35.What is the best title for the text? A.Why does DEET still work? B.Why is DEET the best choice? C.Can DEET attract mosquitoes? D.Can mosquitoes survive DEET? 根据第二段中的“The team allowed the mosquitoes to feed on blood from an artificial feeder while exposed to only clean air for 10 seconds. The researchers then increased the proportion of DEET, aiming to train the mosquitoes to associate the repellent with a meal.(研究团队先让蚊子在仅接触洁净空气的环境中,从人工喂食器吸食血液10秒。随后研究人员增加避蚊胺的比例,旨在训练蚊子将这种驱虫剂与进食关联起来)”可知,研究人员通过在蚊子吸血过程中增加避蚊胺的浓度,训练蚊子建立二者的关联。 33.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The mosquitoes couldn’t land on the repellent-treated hand in the experiments. “They’d be getting the smell of DEET being paired with a bitter touch contact,” Ray says. “It would be a punishment for them rather than a reward.”(实验中蚊子无法落在涂抹了驱虫剂的手上。Ray表示:“它们会闻到避蚊胺的气味,同时伴随不适的触感接触,这对它们而言是一种惩罚,而非奖赏。”)”可知,对蚊子来说,带有避蚊胺的不适感触觉是一种惩罚。 34.细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“But the chemical is sold by different brands at varying concentrations, and each product may come with unique instructions. “Reading the label,” he says, “is important.”(但这种化学驱虫剂有不同品牌、不同浓度的售卖版本,且每种产品可能都有专属使用说明。他表示:“阅读产品标签十分重要。”)”可知,Vinauger建议人们遵照产品说明书使用驱虫剂。 35.主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“Yellow fever mosquitoes exposed the insect repellent (驱虫剂) DEET can learn to associate the off-putting chemical with food, researchers report. The finding suggests that mosquitoes can link unpleasant smells with rewards — turning a negative experience into a positive one.(研究人员称,接触过驱虫剂避蚊胺的埃及伊蚊能够学会将这种令人不适的化学物质与食物关联起来。 Why Do We Love Fall So Much? The autumn equinox (秋分) marks the first official day of fall. Some parts of the country are welcoming the most striking symbols of the season: colorful leaves, sweater weather, and pumpkin spice in everything. Fall stimulates our senses. Every season has its own positive associations, but fall happens to be an especially rich sensory experience — think golden sunlight hitting the maple leaves, the sound of leaves crunching underfoot, or even the scents of damp soil in the air. “ 36 They make us feel cozy, calm, and nostalgic (怀旧的),” says Dr Albers, a Cleveland Clinic psychologist. Fall is short. Because fall is a transitional time between summer and winter, we also view it as more transitory. Thanks to the “rarity effect”, we tend to place higher value on things we can’t have all the time. 37 Fall provides stability and routine. For families with children, returning to school in the fall also provides a sense of predictability and routine. Dr Albers says that during the fall, kids tend to return to their set schedules. 38 Fall weather makes it easier to get outdoors. A blazing summer sun may keep people indoors. 39 “The outdoor activity raises the oxygen level in our brains, which helps us to think clearer and feel calmer,” Dr Albers says. 40 Cooler temperatures and an earlier sunset may promote a more comfortable room and a more reliable bedtime routine — increasing our odds of getting the seven to nine hours of sleep we need. In the front row, dispirited and untidy, sat Teddy Stoddard. She had observed him the previous year: he rarely played with others, his clothes were always soiled, and he often smelled. Worse, he was bad-tempered. She had even taken delight in scrawling large red F’s across his papers. Later, school policy required reviewing each child’s records. She postponed Teddy’s, but when she finally read it, her jaw dropped. His first-grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is bright and joyful, a pleasure to teach.” Second grade: “Excellent student, well-liked, but his mother is terminally ill.” Third grade: “His mother’s death has crushed him; his father is uninvolved.” Fourth grade: “Withdrawn, sleeps in class, few friends.” Mrs. Thompson was deeply ashamed. At Christmas, presents arrived wrapped in ribbons and shiny paper — except Teddy’s, which was clumsily covered in brown grocery bag paper. She intentionally opened it in front of everyone. Inside lay a cheap rhinestone bracelet (手镯) with several stones missing and a bottle one-quarter full of perfume (香水). Some children giggled, but she silenced them by putting on the bracelet and dabbing the perfume, exclaiming how lovely they were. After school, Teddy hesitated to say, “Today you smelled just like my mom used to.” She cried for an hour. That day, she decided to stop teaching subjects and start teaching children. She paid special attention to Teddy, encouraging him constantly. His mind flourished; by June, he was one of the brightest, and despite her earlier lie, he became her favorite. A year later, a note appeared under her door: “You’re the best teacher I ever had.” Six years later, he wrote he had finished high school third in his class. Four years after that, he wrote he would graduate college with highest honors. Then another four years, a letter signed “Theodore F. Stoddard, MD.” Finally, a spring letter said he was getting married, his father had died, and he asked her to sit in the mother-of-the-groom (新郎)’s place. She agreed. Paragraph 1: On the wedding day, Mrs. Thompson wore that bracelet and the perfume. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Mrs. Thompson, tears streaming, shook her head gently. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】      On the wedding day, Mrs. Thompson wore that bracelet and the perfume. Standing at the back of the church, she watched Teddy, now a confident young man, walk down the aisle. With his bride smiling beside him, he caught sight of Mrs. Thompson and paused. “This is the teacher who saved my life,” he announced, his voice trembling. Not only did she accept the seat reserved for his mother, but she also felt unexpected warmth. Time seeming to stand still, memories flooded back — that soiled boy and the cheap bracelet. It was her simple act of kindness that had changed everything. Mrs. Thompson, tears streaming, shook her head gently. “Teddy,” she whispered, “it was you who taught me the true meaning of teaching.” Only when she looked into his grateful eyes did she realize how deeply their bond had grown. What she had given him was nothing but a little attention, yet what he had given her was a lifetime of purpose. Were it not for that Christmas gift, she might never have understood that every child deserves love. “Thank you for letting me be part of your life,” she said, her heart overflowing with pride. 词汇激活 行为类: ①停顿:pause/halt ②宣布:announce/declare/proclaim ③低语:whisper/murmur/mutter 情绪类: ①自信的:confident/self-assured ②感激:grateful/appreciative/obliged/indebted 【点睛】【高分句型1】With his bride smiling beside him, he caught sight of Mrs.(运用了with复合结构with+宾语+宾补作状语) 【高分句型2】Time seeming to stand still, memories flooded back — that soiled boy and the cheap bracelet. SHE asked how I manage to pass so many tough exams and graduate, even though I wasn't fond of medical school. Well, for that, I want to share with you two easy steps. Step one, know what the exam is really about. When you fill a bucket, always put in the big rocks first. The smaller rocks will then automatically filled the remaining spaces, concentrate on the key areas the exam is testing, and don't stress about obscure details. To do this, review past exam papers, organize them by topic and study the main types of questions commonly tested in each step to practice, practice and practice. C Food markets have experienced considerable instability in recent years. D Yellow fever mosquitoes exposed to the insect repellent (驱虫剂) DEET can learn to associate the off-putting chemical with food, researchers report. Why Do We Love Fall So Much? A.Fall also helps us sleep better. B.That may make us feel even more attached to it. C.Fall also provides suitable environment for planting. D.We can buy more seasonal products during this period. E.These sights and sounds help the brain release dopamine. F.And all of us tend to grow better with a little extra structure in our lives. G.But fall’s milder temperatures lend themselves to spending time outside. We began the bus trips when I was seven years old. But how did acupuncture transition from a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) technique to a widely 58 (practise) medical treatment? Acupuncture dates back more than 2,000 years, with its origins in ancient China. Early forms of acupuncture 59 (root) in the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which views the body as 60 interconnected system of energy channels or meridians (经络). These meridians carry the body’s life force, known as Qi (pronounced “chee”), 61 are believed to govern not only physical health but also emotional and 62 (spirit) well-being. While acupuncture is grounded in ancient TCM theory, modern research has helped us understand the science behind 63 it works. Studies suggest that acupuncture stimulates the body’s nervous system, promoting the release of endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers) and activating circulation (循环). Today, acupuncture has firmly established 64 (it) as part of the modern health movement. It’s no longer viewed 65 just a form of alternative medicine. Rather, it’s a complementary therapy (补充疗法) that works alongside traditional medical treatments. Dear schoolmates, _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Students’ Union On the first day of fifth grade, Mrs. Thompson faced her new class and declared she loved them all equally — a lie she immediately recognized.
