Are you trying very hard to memorize new words? Are you looking for easier ways to do it? The key to improving your English vocabulary is to keep studying.
Whether you’re looking to improve your vocabulary for educational purposes or personal growth, learning how to build your vocabulary is the first step. Improving what you have learned is what makes the difference. Your journey towards vocabulary development can be challenging. But lucky for you, we’ve put together five amazing tips that will help you build your vocabulary.
■ Don’t just learn new words.
For example, don’t just learn the word “mind”. Learn the phrase “change your mind”. Look at this example:
— I thought you were going out!
— No, I’ve changed my mind!
■ When you learn a new word, learn its synonyms and opposites, too.
Synonyms: This food in Chongqing is so hot! It’s really spicy!
Opposites: In Chongqing, it is hot in summer and it’s cold in winter.
■ A good way to grow your vocabulary is by adding prefixes and suffixes.
■ When you learn a new word or phrase, learn the formal and informal expressions.
Formal: Would you like a cup of tea?
Informal: Fancy a cup?
■ Use more adjectives (形容词) instead of using “very”.
very hungry = ravenous
I haven’t eaten anything for a day. I’m ravenous!
very small = minuscule

①Living in a mess — cookies in my trousers, and some old magazines or apple seeds in my bed — it’s hard to know where to look for my keys. After two weeks of searching, I finally found them in the toilet. I can’t say I was surprised. But I was surprised when I was diagnosed (诊断) with ADHD (注意缺陷多动障碍) .
②According to a new study, 11% of school-age children have the problem of ADHD, 16% increase since 2007. Some kids may improve with age, but that’s not always the case. ▲ They often feel restless, start many things at once but finish few, pick easy tasks over challenging ones, and have trouble sticking to something for hours. Even small noises or movements can take their attention away and keeping their desk, bag, or homework in order is difficult for them.
③When it comes to what causes ADHD in kids, researchers say there are some factors mixed together. It has something to do with the brain areas responsible for attention and behavior control. And if parents or relatives have ADHD, their children are more likely to have it too.
④Some believe ADHD is caused by poor parenting, sugar, or video games, but science disagrees. Although these may worsen symptoms (症状), they don’t lead to ADHD. More importantly, it’s not the child’s fault. Their brain simply works in a different way.
⑤To better help ADHD children, scientists have made great research efforts. A recent U. S. research has found that ADHD children whose living conditions have more natural views showed an improvement of 19%. Those who have no nice natural view improved just 4%.
⑥A 2023 review of 106 studies showed exercise greatly improves control, attention, and task-changing in young people with ADHD. In another study, 10 minutes of exercise improved control in 82 adults with ADHD.
⑦Creating clear, simple and positive rules — like saying “Homework before video games” instead of “Don’t forget our homework” also works. For better focus and organization, break tasks into small steps, use timers (work for 15 minutes, then take a 5-minute break) and develop habits like studying in the same position daily to avoid distractions (分心).
⑧Although the ideas above can help some kids with ADHD, no single way works for all. More systematic and scientific methods must be developed to meet the needs of worried parents and troubled children.
56. How does the writer lead into the topic of ADHD?
A. By introducing the background. B. By using some famous sayings.
C. By telling a story about himself. D. By describing a picture.
57. Which sentence can be put in the ▲ ?
A. The problems make it impossible for them to perform well at school.
B. Those who are still troubled show clear signs of difficulty.
C. Children who take ADHD medicine often improve more.
D. Parents and teachers play a key role in dealing with their case.
58. According to the passage, which child with ADHD is most likely (可能的) to improve?
A. Tom, who lives with his parents in the city center.
B. Jack, who divides his project into four parts to complete.
C. Lily, whose parents always ask her not to mess her room.
D. Emily, who is used to doing homework in different places.
59. Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage?
A. B.
C. D.

In the early 2000s, LEGO, one of the world’s most beloved toy companies, nearly went out of business. To save itself, it chose a new way: teamwork. Employees from different departments worked closely to improve production, and fans were invited to share their ideas through the LEGO Ideas platform. This platform gave birth to some of LEGO’s most successful products, like sets based on popular movies. The teamwork spirit within and outside the company breathed new life into LEGO, making it a strong and successful brand once again.
In 1970, an oxygen tank exploded (爆炸) on the Apollo 13, turning the routine mission to the moon into a fight for survival. The lives of the three astronauts were in great danger. With the world watching, NASA engineers worked day and night, racing to find solutions to save the astronauts. As systems failed and danger increased, different teams of experts were invited to NASA. They pooled their knowledge to deal with each emergency when it appeared. Up in space, the astronauts also pulled together by supporting each other, following instructions perfectly as well as overcoming challenges together. In the end, the astronauts returned to Earth safely. This mission later became known as a “successful failure.”
At the turn of the 20th century, Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright made the human dream of flight a reality. Their journey to invent the first successful airplane was not the work of one talented person. Wilbur and Orville worked as a team. Wilbur had a wide knowledge of flight theory, while Orville was good at practical engineering. This perfect partnership enabled them not only to experiment but also to improve their designs quickly. With strong will and trust in each other, the Wright brothers made the first controlled, powered flight in 1903, totally changing the future of transportation.

Brain Sport
How good is your memory? How many words can you memorize in 15 minutes? Well, some people can memorize 335 words. Some people are even more amazing. For example, someone once memorized the order of 2,530 playing cards in just one hour!
Just as there are sports competitions using our bodies, there are also sports competitions using our minds, such as the World Memory Championships. These were held in Wuhan, China, in 2019. There were many different events. For instance, the “brain athletes” had to remember as many names and faces as they could or as many words as possible in 15 minutes.
While you might think that these competitors were all born with a strong memory, this is often not true. For example, one champion has an average memory, but he makes full use of memory techniques. So, if he wants to remember the names of the Great Lakes in the US, he thinks of HOMES, because each letter in HOMES stands for a different lake.
Many competitors use what is called a “memory palace” to remember things. While most people are terrible at remembering lists, they are quite good at remembering where things are. Think about your bedroom. You can probably picture in your mind where everything in your bedroom is. Now, picture in your mind the things on the list in different places in your bedroom. Later, if you want to remember the words, all you need to do is to remember the picture.
Memory competitions are not for everyone, and not everyone is a brain athlete. On the other hand, some of their memory techniques may be useful for you in your studies. You should give them a try!
Brain Sport
Memory can be trained and used in different ways. Some people can memorize a large number of words or playing cards in a short time. There are also memory competitions, such as the World Memory Championships.
Being a successful “brain athlete” does not always mean having a naturally strong memory. Some competitors have an average memory but become champions by 73. __________. Another useful method is called a “memory palace,” which helps people remember things by connecting them with 74. __________. If they want to remember the words later, 75. __________.
Memory competitions are not for everyone, but their techniques may help students. 76. ____________.
