For years, my idea of cooking was pressing the button of the microwave. That changed last winter, when my parents left on a business trip and Grandma came to stay with us.
On the first evening, Grandma announced that we would make dumplings from scratch. I watched as her experienced hands turned flour and water into a smooth dough. Then she handed me a small rolling pin. My first wrapper came out thick on one side and thin on the other, and when I tried to wrap it, the filling escaped from the edge. "Don't hurry," Grandma said gently. "Dumplings are like life — they need patience."
By the tenth try, my dumplings could at least stand on the plate. By the twentieth, some even looked like Grandma's — plump and proud. While we worked, Grandma told stories of her childhood: how her mother had saved eggs for months to make a single New Year meal. I learned more about my family that night than in all my years before.
When the dumplings were finally boiled and served, they were not the prettiest ones on the table, but they were, without doubt, the most delicious. Grandma was right: the secret ingredient of any dish is the love and patience you put into it.
24.What did the writer use to think of cooking?
A.Something requiring patience. B.Something quick and simple.
C.Something only for the elderly. D.Something of little value.
25.What was wrong with the writer's first dumpling?
A.It was burnt in the pot. B.It was too big to cook.
C.It fell to the floor. D.Its wrapper broke and the filling escaped.
26.What did Grandma mean by "Dumplings are like life — they need patience"?
A.Making dumplings requires special talent. B.Good results come from patient effort. C.Life without dumplings is incomplete. D.Speed matters more than quality.
27.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.A Winter Business Trip B.Grandma's Secret Recipe
C.More Than a Plate of Dumplings D.The Art of Boiling Dumplings
C
Have you ever bitten into a chilli and felt as if your mouth were on fire? Interestingly, the burning feeling is not really a taste at all — it is a trick played on your brain.
Chillies contain a chemical called capsaicin(辣椒素). When you eat a chilli, capsaicin touches special receptors(感受器)on your tongue that normally warn the body of real heat. Your brain is fooled into thinking your mouth is burning, and it responds by making you sweat and even cry.
So how can you put out the "fire"? Many people reach for a glass of water, but this actually makes things worse, because capsaicin does not dissolve in water. Milk is a much better choice: it contains fat and protein(蛋白质)that wash the capsaicin away.
Why, then, do so many people love this painful experience? Scientists have found that when the brain senses the "burn", it produces endorphins — natural chemicals that make us feel happy and less stressed. In a way, eating hot food gives us a safe adventure: our body screams "danger", while our mind enjoys the excitement.
This may also explain the popularity of Sichuan pepper, which creates a strange numb(麻木的)feeling on the tongue. Eaten together with chillies, it turns a simple meal into a "fireworks show" for the senses.
28.What happens when we eat a chilli?
A.Our tongue is really burnt. B.Our brain mistakes capsaicin for heat.
C.We lose our sense of taste. D.Our body produces real fire.
29.Why is water useless against the burning feeling?
A.Capsaicin cannot dissolve in it. B.It is too cold for the tongue.
C.It makes the body sweat more. D.It weakens the receptors.
30.Why do some people enjoy eating hot food?
A.It helps them fall asleep quickly. B.It trains their brains to ignore danger.
C.It makes them feel happy and less stressed. D.It gives them a chance to show courage.
31.What does the writer think of eating hot food?
A.It is dangerous to health. B.It is an exciting but safe enjoyment.
C.It is a trick played by chefs. D.It is a tasteless experience.
D
When people feel sad or stressed, many of them turn to so-called "comfort food" — ice cream, chocolate, chicken soup, or the dishes their mothers used to make. Comfort food is not defined by its ingredients; it is defined by the feelings it carries.
Psychologists believe that the power of comfort food lies in association. A certain taste or smell can link directly to happy moments in the past. In one study, people who ate chicken soup reported that it reminded them of family ties and made them feel more connected to others. In other words, comfort food feeds the heart as well as the stomach.
Interestingly, comfort food varies from culture to culture. For Americans, it may be apple pie or mac and cheese; for Chinese people, a bowl of hot dumplings or a plate of fried rice with egg may work the same magic. Researchers explain that these differences come from our individual childhood experiences rather than from the food itself.
However, comfort food also has a dark side. Most comfort foods are high in calories, fat or salt. Eating them too often may lead to weight problems and other health risks. Experts therefore suggest a smarter way: enjoy your comfort food now and then, but also learn to find comfort in a phone call home, an evening walk, or a heart-to-heart talk with a friend.
32.What determines whether a dish is comfort food?
A.Its ingredients. B.Its price.
C.The way it is cooked. D.The feelings linked to it.
33.The chicken soup example is used to show ______.
A.the power of association B.the harm of stress
C.the popularity of soup D.the value of family meals
34.Why does comfort food differ across cultures?
A.The climates are different. B.Childhood experiences differ.
C.Cooking skills vary. D.Food prices vary.
35.What do experts advise people to do?
A.Give up comfort food completely.
B.Choose comfort food with fewer calories.
C.Enjoy comfort food in moderation and seek comfort elsewhere too.
D.Replace daily meals with comfort food.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Healthy eating does not mean giving up all the food you love. With a few small changes in your daily habits, you can enjoy your meals and stay in shape at the same time.
Never skip breakfast
Some students get up so late that they rush to school without breakfast. 36 A good breakfast gives you the energy to focus in class and stops you from overeating at lunch.
Eat slowly and mindfully
It takes your brain about twenty minutes to realize that your stomach is full. 37 Put down your fork between bites, and give yourself time to enjoy the flavour of the food.
Choose your snacks wisely
Chips, sweets and sugary drinks are high in calories but low in nutrition. 38 Nuts, fruit and yogurt can satisfy your appetite without harming your health.
Cook more at home
Home-cooked dishes are usually fresher and cleaner than restaurant food. 39 Besides, cooking together with your family is a wonderful way to strengthen family bonds.
Keep a balance, not a ban
40 If you eat a slice of cake at a birthday party, don't feel guilty — just balance it with lighter meals and more exercise afterwards.
A.You'd better cook three dishes for every meal.
B.So slow down when you eat.
C.In fact, skipping meals is a common cause of poor concentration.
D.You don't have to give up your favourite desserts completely.
E.Also, you can control exactly what goes into your dishes.
F.Drinking enough water also helps control your appetite.
G.Instead, keep some healthy snacks within reach.

【参考范文】
Dear Chris,
I'm delighted to hear that you are coming to China soon. Here are some tips that may help you enjoy Chinese food.
Chinese cuisine varies greatly from region to region — Sichuan food is hot and spicy, while Cantonese dishes are mild and delicate. When you eat out, don't miss dim sum, whose thin wrappers and fresh fillings are truly out of this world. Besides, I'd love to invite you to my home, where my grandma will teach you to make dumplings by hand.
Looking forward to your arrival!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
【听力原文】
【Text 1】
M: Good evening. Are you ready to order?
W: Yes. I'll have the fish and a green salad, please.
M: Would you like any dessert? We have a lovely cheesecake today.
W: No, thanks. I'm trying to eat less sugar.
【Text 2】
W: A table for four at seven this evening, please.
M: I'm sorry, madam. We're fully booked at seven. Would half past seven be all right?
W: Fine. We'll take it.
【Text 3】
M: This chocolate cake is simply out of this world!
W: Believe it or not, I baked it myself following a video. It was my first try.
M: Well, you certainly have a gift for baking.
【Text 4】
W: Tom, why have you hardly touched your fried rice?
M: I'm full, Mom. I had two hamburgers and a large cola with Mike at the newly opened fast-food restaurant just now.
【Text 5】
M: We're boiling dumplings tonight — my grandma made the filling herself. Can you come over?
W: I'd love to, but I promised to help my sister with her science project tonight.
M: That's a pity. Maybe next time.
【Text 6】
W: Dad's birthday is this Saturday. Let's cook dinner for him instead of eating out this year.
M: Great idea! What shall we make? Steak is Dad's favourite.
W: True, but Mom usually cooks the steak, and she's away on business this week. How about spaghetti? It's simple.
M: Good. We need beef, tomatoes, onions and cheese. I checked the fridge — we have everything except cheese.
W: I'll buy some on my way home from school.
M: And I'll bake a birthday cake. I've learned how in the cooking club.
W: You did? Dad will be so impressed!
【Text 7】
W: Hi, Kevin! Are you taking part in the school's International Food Festival next Friday?
M: Of course. It's held every year to raise money for children in the mountain areas.
W: What will your class sell this time?
M: We'll make Chinese dumplings and spring rolls — my mother will teach us how to wrap the dumplings properly.
W: Sounds great! Our class has decided on Japanese sushi. I'm learning to roll it at home now.
M: Then see you next Friday, and may the best class win!
【Text 8】
M: You look a bit pale, Lucy. Are you all right?
W: I feel weak and can't focus in class. This morning I got up so late that I rushed to school without breakfast again.
M: That explains it. Breakfast is essential for students — it gives you energy for the whole morning.
W: You're right. But I'd rather stay in bed for a few more minutes.
M: Why not go to bed a little earlier and get up on time? A proper breakfast only takes ten minutes.
W: OK. I'll start tomorrow.
【Text 9】
W: Mike, you've been studying in Guangzhou for a term. How do you like Cantonese food?
M: I love it, especially the morning tea culture. People there "drink tea" for hours with tiny dishes called dim sum.
W: I hear some dim sum is quite delicate. Which one is your favourite?
M: The shrimp dumplings, without doubt. The wrapper is so thin that you can almost see the pink shrimp inside.
W: My mouth is watering! I'm visiting my uncle in Guangzhou next weekend.
M: Perfect! Then I'll take you to a traditional tea house and you can try them yourself.
【Text 10】
Attention, please, everyone. Good news for all food lovers in our school! To help us learn more about food culture, the Students' Union will hold a Food Culture Week from November 3rd to 7th. On Monday afternoon, a famous chef from the Grand Hotel will give a talk on the history of traditional Chinese dishes in the school hall. On Wednesday, the long-awaited cooking competition will take place in the dining hall, and twenty teams have already signed up. Finally, an exhibition of food from around the world will be open in the library all week. Everyone is welcome. Don't miss it!
